Here are the stats: It took our team around 5 hours on the streets to get 21 peoples' opinions. Out of the 21 people, 15 were for reunification and 6 were against it. Obviously, this is not a big enough sample size to accurately represent all of South Korea and their thoughts on the issue, but our goal here is not to conduct mass surveys. We want everyone to voice their opinions, listen to different perspectives, and engage in conversation. It's your turn now. What's your take on this issue? Should the two Koreas reunify? Discuss.

Asian Boss Absolutely!! I'm not so sure about there being problems with when Germany reunited. Then again I haven't been interested in studying that. From what I see *ANY POSSIBLE* problems with North Korea and South Korea reunitifying can be overcome {by the people of both Koreas debating & coming together to solve their own problems with their own unique perspective. I feel reunification will be a *BOOM BUSINESS* for South Korea. Instead of poor North Koreans coming down over the border to find employment and food. South Koreans could be employed as humanitarians giving aid to the poor villages in the North. It will *NOT ONLY* be a tourism boost for South Korea as local South Koreans will want to book tours there {even as a train trip on the way to China}. South Koreans could be employed to mentor North Koreans in how to speak English fluently to be tour guides for western tourists visiting the region. It could boost money making of the South Korean building industry by them building more infrastructure such as restaurants, foreign language schools, university's and supermarkets in North Korea {also from what I've seen in photos in other videos of North Korea they don't have any public toilets}. Good Luck with Everything both Koreas. May there be peace between *ALL* countries around the world.

*Hoping you'll read this, Asian Boss:* As a European I'm very impressed by how well developed these opinions are. It really seems like everyone has thought it through and has a true argument behind their opinions. What is the reason for this? Does the close proximity to the hostile state North Korea motivate people to think about the issue more, or could South Korean media be more educational and less biased than in the west? Maybe I'm overestimating them? Would be interesting to get an inside perspective on this. :)

I think there are many possibilities to develope North Korea.
South korea and China have many millionaires who could open companies in NK .
These investments would be private investments and would not burden tax payers or the SK budget itself.
Wages of 100 USD monthly would make it even more sexy for them.
Also the costs of construction material must be low as hell in NK.
      Good luck guys .

I am from Germany. The cost of unification was described as "one of the most expensive land purchases of all time". And although it has been nearly 30 years since "Wiedervereinigung" there are slight differences. So yea there are/were huge burdens in regards of money. BUT in my opinion the benefits outweight by far the downsides. Germany is in all aspects stronger than before. And most important: peaceful.

Honestly I think that Korea is running out of time for reunification. The people who were around before the divide are fewer and fewer and the cultural differences due to the economic systems and propaganda are growing with each new generation. If Korea doesn't reunify within the next 30 years max then the 2 countries will be too fundamentally different to ever be one again without military conquering and bloodshed followed by extreme propaganda to force acculturation. Not good or feasible.

  • @livlauryn
    @livlauryn 6 лет назад +1613

From a Psychological perspective, I am worried about discrimination resulting from reunification, especially once the older generation dies and there are fewer emotional connections to North Korea. From what i know, North Korean defectors do experience some discrimination and if the South Korean economy suffers because of reunification, it could cause a lot of resentment I believe. Furthermore, with the competitive job market in South Korea, it is possible that it could end up where South Koreans taking up the majority of higher paid jobs and North Koreans doing lower wage and manual labour. Therefore maintaining cultural and economic differences which increases the chances of discrimination similar to Japan's 'Burakumin'. I believe that if reunification is to happen, it needs to happen very slowly... and I mean 50 years minimum. Probably start with limited travel between countries and slowly increase and build financial stability but not put pressure on both sides to change completely and so quickly.

    • @Supergecko8
      @Supergecko8 6 лет назад +154

The job market would be so big that it would not be possible, just rebuilding the north would create so much wealth, rebulding a nation creates more economy and jobs than you think. Also north Koreans would be way more competitive, trust me, nothing gives you more motivation and discipline than remembering starvation in your family... I would be more afraid for south Koreans lol

Olivia Barrett You're right. I could totally see something similar to Japan's Burakumin. And I could see your idea of graduated steps in reunification. First of all, all the landmines have to be cleared from the border. Then I could see some sort of a park/memorial area replace it. Then open up sections of the border so folks could travel back and forth.
But as you mentioned before, too many years has passed where culturally, there is going to be problems between the North and South Korean people.

This is fascinating! As someone born and in East Germany, I find it interesting that South Koreans use Germany as an example for all the problems reunification can cause. I would suggest looking at all the positive aspects it has brought. I don't think many if any Germans regret it and Germany as a whole has profited in many ways. We have a strong economy and a lot of stability in our country. Sure, there are still difference and problems, but they are all minor in comparison. For many West German companies a new market was opened, demand for western products was high in the east, labour was cheaper (and still is), military expenses were extremely reduced and families united. I'm not blind to the problems we still have, but living standards are high in all parts of Germany and not only in spite of reunification, but also because of it. I'm not saying that things in Korea would turn out the same, I doubt it in fact, but it's still interesting that it's used as a example for all the negative consequences...

As a german born after the reunification i understand why so many young koreans are against it. They are born in a rich economy and a culture that is as different as it could be from the society their northern neighbors grew up in.
The south would have to pay a lot of money - probably more than they could handle - on infrastructure and welfare and as soon as that hits people they will be very unhappy with it. The northerners might be thankful for a generation but after that they will demand an equal standard of living. And private property will likely bought by people and corporations from the south.
I guess a transitional period with a capitalist and democratic government with financial support and a slow and careful integration into the southern economy over at least two decades will be the best option.

China and America are going to war and South Korea will be the battlefield. Doesn't matter if it's a troops on the ground war or a cold war, the current South Korea situation is unviable, they will not maintain their economy nor their life quality much longer.
But they have the opportunity to reunify with North Korea, becaming a nuclear powerhouse with a gigantic army and hundreds of submarines.
Powerful enough to be let alone by China, US and Japan.

In the same time, North korea have a bad economy, but a powerful army ; they are a nuclear power, and they don't need china or russia assistance today to defend themself. So if both korea are reunited today, it will be a powerful country with strong economy just like Germany today, and a strong army with nuclear power.

I really agree with the man showing off the argument of the reunion of Germany. In my opinion, N.Korea and S.Korea are seperated too long already. Thats why it MUST be worse than Germany. The man is right, there are still problems existing in Germany between East and West, but if Korea was reunited that would be worse in case of language, culture and society. People have to get used to that and that might cost a whole generation. As the one guy said, seeing this as a long-term act it might work, but for the first generation of that (maybe up to 30 years after reunion) this will be a pain, or at least it wont be the same as before.

I’m not German but have been traveling there all my life (a few times each year) and my closest friends are German. I know there was a problem when Germany first reunited but I haven’t heard of it these days. More that the Southern area of Bavaria wants to break free (but that’s a completely different issue). On the other hand Germany has become one of the strongest economies in the whole world and are generally looked up to as a country as a whole. Therefore I think it would definitely benefit Korea infinitely (in my eyes they work harder than the Germans, from my experience of living here for almost 2 years) to reunite.

Reunification will be best achieved (totally removing the Kim Regime from the equation) if the process is slow and the north can open up its economy to international markets to slowly improve their living standards. Dark PePe it is kind of a similar situation in an unfortunate way, but in this case the CCP is NK and Taiwan is SK despite the slightly different course of history and geography that lead to their current situations being so different. Taiwan doesn't want reunification, China wants Taiwan like they want almost everything else. SK and NK are both using reunification as a political motivator, so there's no real aggressor. CCP is taking away quality of life that exists in HK, Macau, and it hopes Taiwan whereas SK couldn't possibly make NK quality of life worse.

As wonderful as reunification may sound, in the current state of affairs, it's impossible. In order to have a progressive unification, the Kim Dynasty and his regime must be completely wiped out, the citizens need to be rewired and deprogrammed, the infrastructure, rebuilding, reteaching all of these have to be done. Stats show that this will take at least a few decades (but who knows Koreans are tenacious. We built the current civilization in less than 50 years) but the product outcome will be so helpful to our economy, society, and the country in general.
I don't mean to be offensive but because Korea was built so quickly and with no little time for self-reflection and societal evolution/progression, it's hard for them to see beyond their current state of affairs, so I do understand their desire to not unite because it will be fiscally tight for the next decade or so but again, the productive outcome is so much greater than what we could have envisioned. We live in a global economy which it means that the government doesn't have to take too much action to the develop of a country, but rather companies.

I had to do a project in my korean class talking about unification.. since I am not from Korea it was hard to me to pic up a side hehe I had to study and think a lot!
But the families who got separated in the war and the fact that people are starving to death in North korea made me think that South Koreans would want the unification.. but it is super interesting to see that a lot of them are ok the way it is and it’s totally understandable that North Korea feels like strangers and that the money the South would had to apply is huge!!
The generation gap and different mindsets is interesting and curious to see.. thanks for the amazing video as always, Asian Boss❣️

You can’t really compare the situation in Korea with west Germany and the GDR. North Korea and South Korea is a whole different ballgame. It is highly unlikely that the two countries will ever get unified. The economic consequences for Seoul would be absolutely crass, the influx from refugees the what is now South Korea would also be totally insane. But again, the reunification will never happen as long as North Korea feudal military regime is still in power. They would never resign and let SK take over. Also, the social problems that would arise..

I wonder if those South koreans who are against the reunification realize that many of them still have blood relatives in the North. Brothers, sisters, cousins, grandparents, and yet they would sacrifice them for their own well-being. So much for family ties and korean values. Perhaps this would also explain why elderly people are treated like outcast in South korea.

I read a lot about this topic, not only because I hope that someday I could study here, but because I want the best for this country, called South Korea. I saw in some news that both North and South Korea could follow different paths/ economical models in this reunion. One example, which in my mind it does not sound so bad, is the European Union model. In this case, slowly, the Korean Union will be "moving towards more free movement of labour, of capital, or goods and services across the DMZ (which would remain in place, a reminder of the dangers of a return to the past and a lucrative tourist attraction). ", as the news says.
Following this path and seeing the bigger picture of the future, things will get better. Families can visit each other and the trade will feel the fragrance of a wider freedom. North and South could keep their own nationality simbols (flag, hymn, etc), culture and traditions. The Leaders from both countries could keep their role in society.
It looks like North is changing. Hoping in a good way and also hoping that is a change made for good, not just for now, because they are desperate, like someone in the video pointed.
People are fearing thinking about the past and how it could be brought back. They don't know much about the other place, so that's why it will be good for them to be informed about pros and cons. They also need to know that time will puts together all the pieces from the puzzle, even if there exist understanding, respect, patience and communication.

I agree with some South Koreans who were interviewed by Asian Boss that there is a need to educate them on the advantages and disadvantages of the reunification. Not only that, most of South Koreans, according to the interviews conducted by Asian Boss, don't know much about North Koreans aside from the fact that they are poor. Information campaign by the South Korean government is very important, most especially among the young generation, for this kind of concern so they will be able to come up with ways on how they could address some of the problems that may arise during the reunification process of their countries..

As a German citizen, German unity has always been close to my heart. I sincerely hope that we will one day in the not too distant future see a reunited Korea. I think a lot needs to be done to prepare for this day. Not only allow inter-Korean communication at the senior level but at the people level to get to know each other better, and visit each other. No more war on Korean soil. Instill political detente like former western German Chancellor Willy Brandt did during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Korea is now more divided politically and economically than Germany ever was prior to reunification in 1990. Both sides are strangers. There were be a huge cost to Korean reunification for South Koreans, which would be somewhat offset by the cuts in military spending. To bring north Koreans to the standards of the south will take some time. The Wall will be in the minds of Koreans for generations.

I have mixed thoughts towards the idea of reunification. Should this take place, we need to consider the social, political, and economic consequences that will impact the country, as the interviewees in the video who opposed reunification stated. However, on a positive note, the idea of a unified Korea is a beautiful thing, considering that the people living on either side of the border both share the same language, the same culture, the same customs, and the same blood. It's heartbreaking to see them divided by a single boundary that splits the peninsula in half. If reunification were to take place, I just hope that everything will go well.

Actually I can understand newer generations. If I were South Korean, I wouldn’t want reunification either. South Korea has very stable and developed economy and they are one of the leading countries on earth in terms of technology. If reunification happens, a lot of spending needed to increase standards in North Korea (infrastructure, education, healthcare etc.). Also South and North Koreans are not culturally associated anymore. South Korea has influenced a lot from Western culture while North Korea is isolated from world for decades. Even their language is different from South. Unfortunately if reunification happens North Korean people will be a burden to South Koreans. So unification is not sustainable for a long period and that’s why most of the people don’t want to reunify.

  • @zhijiang7853

Reunification of Korea is always good for Koreans in long run, but the long run is very long (dozens of years at least). The difference between two Koreas is much more tremendous than that between two Germans in 1990s. Then after reunification, the new Korea will experience numerous challenges, including economic recessions. However, if I was Korean, either from North or South, I would like unification, even though there is going to be a huge cost. After solving these problems, however, everything will become great.

As a german, I really understand the cautiousness of southkoreans and why they are not sure about the reunion. After all these years germany still has different troubles - f.e. the loans are different or the philosophical/political thinking (that's why west germans and east germans tend to not like each other that much)
Even nowadays there are germans that wish the old divided country back.
Southkorea is gonna be to have a lot of troubles to find a solution for what to do with all these different kinds of north korean people. It's really not easy...But I just wish the suffering in northkorea would end.

      North Korea reasons:
-Big chance that the supreme leader and his cronies won’t have much position of power after reunification.
      -Losing their nukes
      -Losing their international attention
-Large chance that a lot of the officials will be tried for human right crimes
-No more lush life for the top leaders
-The world won’t be kind to their ex-leaders after the whole situation of NK is uncovered
-No more Chinese political and military backing for their projects
      South Korea reasons:
-They will need trillions of dollars to reeducate and supply NK population and also properly build NK to be self-sufficient instead of sucking tons of money every year from the South
-They now have to share border with China
      -They will gain literally nothing
I think none would be in a hurry to reunite

How about not reunifying and just having N. Korea 1. Sign a peace treaty. 2. Set up and actual democratic gov't. 3. Allow their economy to grow by opening it's doors to foreign investers.
South Koreans aren't selfish for wanting their economy to strive. They shouldn't have to struggle for the next 20 30 40 years because of reunification. In fact, they already had to do it during the last 60 years after the korean war. Reunification isn't the only solution to fixing this problem.

Naturally this didn't really raise the standard of living in East Germany to the level people expected. Best plan would be to let North Korea be free for 20-30 years, modernize and allow investment and then check back at that time.

Reunification is an ambitious undertaking. I believe that before even thinking of that, seeking a peaceful coexistence in this moment would be a more appropriate goal, though not in the least easy. Unfortunately North Korea is not very inclined towards this, so until we see a change in there, there is little hope of improvement. Nonetheless it's great to see president Moon's stance, and I hope South Korea can keep this attitude in the wait for a change in North Korea.

Young generations might feel uncomfortable because they would keep paying the huge costs for the reunification even though they haven't had any decent oppotunity in the society so far. The households debt in South Korea is huge, and even old generations are undergoing the problem, while the corporations have saved a lot, and the gap between them has became a lot bigger since the late 90s asia finantial crisis. Also, the rich companies would invest in the northern part asking the government to coorperate, by paying the cost for the infrastructures, using the taxes. There were so many cases that the citizens pay the costs and the corporations take the profits.

I think that reunification is much too strong of a thought at this point given the tension. It’s a big step and should be taken slow. Instead just focus on improving relationships between the two countries by opening borders to people, free to travel back and forth. And improving trade. It’s a slightly smaller step that would require a lot of negotiating on both sides. But it’s possible.

In my opinion the most rational solution would be SK to help NK open to the world step by step but remain as two separate countries for a couple of more decades until NK is stable enough and closer to the economical prosperity of SK. Reunification that is made too fast will be harmful to both countries.

As an outsider, all these interviews perplex me due to the lack of any information either presented or asked about NK's dictatorship and how it would affect terms of reunification. Kim Jong-Un does not seem like the type to give up the throne and SK's population will (presumably) not yield to a dictatorial government. Subsequent to opening up travel between the countries, what motivation would majority of the starving NK's population have to not permanently move to SK. Consequently, what would Kim's regime have to gain from losing human capital and influence over their own current subjugated people? And this doesn't even begin to answer the question of how it'll play out on a global scale given an unified Korea will not be seen a "stable" Korea as long as Kim is holding on to Nuclear weapons and is in charge.

Even if we disregard chasm of cultural differences between the two nations and what their colliding would entail, the financial and economic burden felt by SK would be felt harshly for the better part of a generation, and it would be the YOUNG generation, not the old, to suffer for it. It's easy for YOU to say because YOU wouldn't be the one paying that price. The young people of SK don't want to pay the price for their mistakes people made generations ago and I don't blame them.

I think many people don't realise how difficult it will actually be to reunite both Koreas. Let's just say the NK government gave up their weapons and everything else. That's great.. but the amount of time, energy and money it will take to introduce North Koreans into South Korean society is beyond huge. There are programs that help NK defectors integrate into SK society and this can take months and months. It's not going to be easy, but I hope all Koreans are able to live as one and in peace eventually.

Hayley 헤일리 what are the actual chances of north Korea giving up their weapons and Kim jong un giving up his power. I personally feel like that would never happen

Why does the North need to give up nuclear weapons to reunify? Once Korea is united, those nuclear weapons belong to everyone in Korea.

This is how I picture the reunification: While some North Koreans will move to the south, the vast majority will just stay in the north, and in the meantime some South Koreans will move to the north to help them rebuild the economy. The reunification should be a process that introduces and integrates BOTH sides to each other. So reunification may even be more difficult than you think.

Defectors made a choice to be free from that place because they had the mental capacity to do so.
Not all who have been brainwashed have the willpower or mental strenght to unlearn what their lives once revolved around. A re-integration program will not work for everyone.

Currently, the government supports 8,400 USD and homes for one North Korean defector with South Korean taxes.
If reunified, South Korea's national coffers could run out due to the huge economic differences between South and North Korea.
Tax increases will also be a burden to South Koreans.
There is also a very wide gap in living standards between North and South Korea and their perception of each other."
Of course, the benefits of reunification will be great,
but I hope that unification will not happen to our generation right away.

The more the years go by, the less chance there is of reunification. Even Korean language is starting to be uncomprehensible each other both South and North 😢

They share such a long history, for me they are one people. One is influenced a lot by western culture while other remained same or less influenced, Would love to see them reunify , but i don't think i will be seeing it happen during my lifetime

Idealistically, reunification would be fantastic. Logistically, it would be extremely difficult. Reunification would see multiple problems-mass immigration from the North to the South, huge economic destabilisation, and not to mention the huge cultural differences.
East Germany is still poorer than the West till this day, and the differences between the two economies weren’t anywhere close to being as large as the North and South Korean economies...

    @Asian Boss
The problem with unifying is that they would have to get rid of the North Korean government and then integrate the population into the South Korean government and culture.
If they do unify, the North needs to be totally rebuilt as the country as is, is still stuck in the 1950s in terms of technology, infrastructure, etc.
Heck, even setting up Internet infrastructure is going to take a long time.
Educating people is going to be a immense job as well.
But unifying won't matter as long as the Kim family is still in power, keeps making these threats, keeps up with their nuclear program, keeps up with their crimes against humanity, keeps taking people hostage, etc.
    Oh and another thing...
If they do unify, everyone in the North is going to have to integrated and given ID and be put into the system as citizens. Also, what would happen to the people of South Korea? Would they all receive a new ID card as simply "Korea" and none of this Republic of Korea/South Korea and DPRK/North Korea?
So besides the issues originating from the government side of things between the South and North, there's also issues of integrating people, educating people, building infrastructure, feeding all of these people, etc. It's going to take *a lot* of resources to the people of South Korea and of course they'll resent the North due to the strain on all of these people. Tax dollars will be spent, and probably taxes will drastically increase for the people of South.
Even the logistics and finances will be crazy to manage and implement.

One thing I really don't understand is that how people talked about how it would benefit or disbenefit them, but never crossed their mind of the humanity part that a reunify would do to save those millions of lives in NK. It's surprising that there was no one saying that they are pro-reunification just because it could save the people in NK and that's what it matters.

The main thing Asian Boss has taught me is that Koreans for the most part have similar mannerisms and perspectives as Americans or anyone else. I really thought people had wildly different mindsets in different countries but Im wrong. Obviously there are some differences but the average Korean seems to answer all these questions the way an average American would I feel like

I am an Indian and we do have the similar issue with Pakistan and Bangladesh. I think more people to people contact and less political influence on the matter is the key to reduce resentments, preoccupied notions and prejudices between the citizens across the border.
The more they will feel they are similar in many ways the more they will have the reason to unite.
