What would they say about “our time”? Would they recognize that the divide is driven by massive technological changes more profound than the impact of the printing press that brought 100 years of war?
What a legacy. Thousands of important stories that teach us an important lesson. The story of the Zealots, for instance. Shows us how religion can make us crazy.
A few pages of the Durants a day, read in quiet contemplation-- the perfect antidote to the mind numbing junk food coming across our device screens via social media. To be able to sit with the Durants at a dinner table for an evening of conversation-- what an elevation of the soul that would bring!
I took care of patients in a mental facility named Harmony House in the corners of Rosecrans and Normandie, Gardena California, back in the 90s. The place was shut down by California Department of Health and the patients were moved to other facilities. Many of them left books behind, which were heading to the trash 🗑 can. I spotted one which called my attention: The Age of Faith by Will Durant. I still have it and is part of my book collection.
Still my favorite series of all time, sometimes I find myself wanting a updated version to recent history. Then I realize this would just sadden me and cause a loss of faith in humanity lol. Miss you Will and Ariel, glad you didn’t have to see what those cultures that seemed so bright and promising and optimistic at the end of the series have become in modern times
I learned about philosophy by getting caught in a rainstorm ~LOL~, truly. I was about 20 years old at the time and was walking down a busy boulevard when the skies opened up and a torrential rain began to fall. I ducked into the first store I could and hoped to wait out the storm and it turned out to be a bookstore. Being a book lover anyway I began to peruse the stacks and just happened to see _The Story Of Philosophy_ by Will smiling out at me. It occurred to me that I knew little more about philosophy than the standard Socrates, Plato, Aristotle stuff I was forced to learn in high school so, out of a passing interest, I started to read the book. Well, long story short - I wound up buying the book and it served to launch my own journey into this fascinating subject. I will go further than that: It changed my life. I have since purchased and read other books by Will and Ariel (just love that name - _ARIEL_ ). I now own two entire sets of _The Story Of Civilization_ , one of them in mint condition with jackets and signed which no one is allowed to touch, and the other which is my "working copy".

"I don't apologize for my enjoyment of the flesh." "I wish you were as happy as I am." "I've been reasonably faithful to you, don't you think?" "You have to be 86 to know what love is." "These days, they think of love solely in terms of the body.... The soul doesn't have to be agitated, the body comes at a very low price." "We too had bodies that were desirous and longing." "It may be envy that makes the old think that the young know nothing." "I've met so many fine people that I've almost lost my faith in the wickedness of mankind." "If we gave in to all our secret instincts we'd still be savages and barbarians." "I'm controlling myself at this moment. Let's go home." Heaven would include Sunday afternoon picnics with these two.

I have all the works on kindle and Audible..plus a handful of actual hard covers from old book stores....this is a great little contemporary doc on their life in the late 70s, great stuff!
