  • Our Oriental Heritage (Volume 1): Will Durant opens his massive survey of civilized history with a sweeping look at the Orient: the Egyptians, who perfected monumental architecture, medicine and mummification; the Babylonians, who developed astronomy and physics; the Judeans, who preserved their culture in the immortal books of the Old Testament; and the Persians, who ruled the largest empire in recorded history before Rome.

I’m so happy that this is on RUclips. 👍
it’s such a daunting read, so listening to it makes it seem more doable.
the full 12 volumes are like 10,000 pages. and as much as I love to read, I would be lying if I said that it wasn’t an intimidating prospect.

The evolution of the state in developing internal civility underpins civilisation. Tension will inevitably arise due to individuals seeking freedom which is fine, but not the extent that we undermine the security of our civilisation.

And who decides what security is or isn't? Some members of the community may feel they are completely comfortable taking upon themselves the responsibility of their personal security in order to secure greater freedom, while others may feel they want absolutely no conflict in their lives, and willing to surrender greater amounts of their freedoms.
Who decides how much personal freedom one may have before the civilizations security has been undermined?
It's an interesting conversation we don't have in the general commons enough, if at all.
