Before and After Installing a K&N Cold Air Intake

- Video of my 5.3L 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT showing the difference in acceleration as well as the engine, exhaust and drive by sounds. This is the K&N 77 series cold air intake. The performance and fuel mileage gains are very minuscule from my experience. It just made the truck sound awesome under hard acceleration. Plus I'll never have to buy a new air filter again. Sorry about the poor quality of the video. I now have a better editing program and all my new videos are in HD.

I see a lot of people bashing because the truck is too loud..... I don't get that.... with a cold air intake, the only time there is a significant change in tone is under heavy throttle... which is loud anyways. it's not so much louder as much as throatier. there is barely a difference under normal loads.
Exactly! I'm glad you understand. But hey, anything that's even 1 decibel louder than stock is considered immature and a nuisance to everyone around you these days..
@@mncarguy which is why it's time to put a Corsa exhaust on my xjs v12
@Suns Out Guns Out have you blown anyone's ears out yet? Lol that's sweet
youre right. ordered one simply for the 3 mpg difference i get now (with a lifted sierra on 35s ill take all the mpg i can get lol). the throatier sound and better throttle response under load is just an added bonus.
@@mncarguyyour truck isn’t even loud. Shes’s just got a good tone. I don’t see why people are bashing you.
Honestly one of the more solid video examples. Straight to the point
will be getting one because of this video.
Indeed along I believe it’s called a magma flow exhaust
Me to
@@thealaskanhusky9614 I honestly suggest flowmaster
Thanks for showing the different comparisons. Love it! I'm gonna do this as my first upgrade to my 2016 Silverado.
No problem, glad I could help! Good luck with getting yours upgraded.
me too!!!

no... get the afe momentum gt.. dyno proven 36 h.p for the 6.2
Just watching this clip, convinced me to put the cold air intake back to work.
A cold air intake without a shield isn’t really “cold”.
Atleast it has the sides lol. It has rubber around it so it might fit to the hood
With the rubber seal on top once you close the hood it makes a box
@@2jzfrank thank you that’s what I was tryna get out lol
it has a shield.
@@Schwifty1055 Its got the shield , bottom is right off the front, top seats to the hood, Got one on my 2018
Great video sitting in my truck at oreillys, thought I'd do a search for a k&n thanks
Thanks, glad I could help!
Love the video we got the point on this one😁
K & N does make a difference in sound. I would only assume it would give more power since it pulls in more fresh cold air. Mine sounds great.
Mine makes it sound different in sound, guess it depends
Is there a certain intake that can make your car louder?
Agreed I installed one on my 2015 Camaro yesterday and it’s way louder and the response time is oddly better
The differences I noticed were with the filter the RPM's shot up a lot more than without it, and the you could definately hear a difference when revving it
thanks for your effort man i really liked your video!!!!
Perfect video all around. Thank you, exactly all I wanted to see and hear.
The next step to get full benefits from a cold air intake is a larger throttle body which also involves a larger intake manifold 😊 then exhaust then a cam which inevitably leads to a bigger displacement motor...😅
You need a programmer to change your shift points.Mine shifts at 6200 rpm instead of your 5400 rpm.If you really like to go fast. And an exhaust system that flows.Plug and play stuff....
matt schenden what motor do you have? Not worried about that being a little high for the motor? Really close to valve float I think for the Ls 5.3
@@LWNDmax valve float? Lol ok. You can turn that motor 7k with no problems.
randy schmidt there's no way with stock springs dude
@@LWNDmax you are right but I think dude is confused about valve float
How tf do i do that with my car lmao?
Seems like it sounds and performs great. I will be getting one for my 96 Silverado here soon
Best intake video out there thanks for making it!
You're welcome
@@Jalisco38 you’re sexy.
That sound never gets old
If I have a flowmaster super 10 series on my truck, would a cold air intake make it sound better?
It'd make your truck sound better both coming and going. You can hear the roar of the engine much more with the cold air intake.
It definitely made a difference for a big body truck 👍👍
This is insane. The transformation is out of this world. Getting one ASAP
Dylan Mason did you get one? Do you have to reprogram anything or just bolt it on?
Abdullah Al-Shimri you just bolt it on
Awesome video. I'm about to buy one of these for my Chevy and I'm glad I saw this. What were the major changes, as far as mileage and acceleration? Again, thank you for them demonstration!
+Kevin Martinez Thanks for watching! I didn't notice much of a difference except for gaining maybe 1 mpg and one hell of a badass sound coming from under the hood. I've put around 17k miles on it since installing it and nothing has come loose or anything like that. It's definitely paying for itself. Hope yours turns out how you want.
i have the same intake in my 2011 chevy silverado 1500. i love it!
not much changed
lol
+Thorodin Solutions smell my shit
I put one in my 2010 Ford 4.6 24V and improved the sound but not the performance. Actually lowered MPG.
wtf that would outrun my hellcat by 8 miles hax0r
use decent headphones phone speakers don't really portray the lower note you get from cai
Great video this is exactly what us cant deciders look for 👍🏿
i did like my old one thinking on getting another ;)
U can tell u hate your truck
Where did u buy it
Love it simple, no talking, all action.
Can anyone tell me if by installing this mod if I will get any check engine codes popping up on me . I've heard of this happening before and don't wanna waste money if there's even a chance. I live in Massachusetts and they're stupid strict on inspection bullshit.thanks!
I beg to differ. I put a K & N cold filter on my 2015 Silverado with a 4.3 V 6. I'm getting 21mpg highway. My city mileage is around 17 mpg up from 14 mpg. Now I also run dura lube in my oil pan, by advise of my buddy who is a pro mechanic. I run Castrol synthetic. Also I beg to differ on sound, its not that loud even when accelerating. It is however way more responsive, thus faster and quicker. Having a steady foot on the gas pedal or using cruise control helps as well. In my own opinion, I am very happy with my results.
I just got my KNN today UPS. Thanks for the video, your truck sounds aggressive. War Eagle
Probably one of the better cold air intake videos!
Seems like all cai extend how long a vehicle holds revs. I love that sound. God, it sounds sooo much more throaty, too. Damn, I love these fuckin things.
Really?
Sounds identical to me when I play 1:00 and 1:20 back to back.
It sounds good ! I was looking at a TRD intake for my 2016 Tundra, watched both here, had K&N CAI on my last 3 Fords, I'm gonna stick with them for the Tundra. I just think they're better, definitely sound better ! PS, 2008 F-150 4X4 still runs great, wife drives it, 200,000 miles ! With Castrol synthetic & K&N. Gonna be pretty tough to beat that record. All I've done to it besides K&N CAI is brakes, tires ! Excellent Trucks !
Good results, I put one in my Jeep and I definitely hear the air getting sucked into the intake in the higher rpm’s, I love it
What are your thoughts putting the k & n intake on a 2007 yukon denali xl? Im more interested in increasing gas mileage, but after watching your video, i wouldnt mind even more growl and quicker pick up before 3rd gear.
Wow, so much time and effort making this video. Well done.
Shit! Sounds awesome.
Thanks man!
My 2006 F150 is 11 yrs old..I put this intake in 07....my truck now has 140k miles and still going strong....I clean the filter every 6 months and clean my throttle body every year. No problem with my old truck.
Los Critics Supreme
It's real simple..the quicker you can get air and gas into the engine the more H.P. The K&N intake is much less restrictive air flow and it sounds Grrrreat.
OK NOW PUT YOUR STOCK AIR BOX BACK ON AND ACTUALLY SEE IF IT MADE A DIFFERENCE SO YOU CAN QUALIFY IT.
Alex McGovern I think you meant to say quantify. If you're going to try sounding smart at least use the proper terminology. Besides, reinstalling the air box would be a huge waste of my time. Especially since I already sold it.
mncarguy , what else would you recommend that would make it sound and perform better? I’m 16 and have a 04 GMC Sierra sle with a 5.3 V8. I included my age in hope that you won’t tell me a easier way to kill my self.
I added a K&N drop in air filter to my 09 f150 4.6l v8 3v and a high performance exhaust. It did help the power and the mileage ... It just depends. Also I plan to possible have it tuned as well.
I prefer the drop in filters that use your stock system since this type of air filter can actually suck in more hot air than cool because of its shape! But this is a good video
No animals hurt in the making of this video, but 5 gallons of gas were
amazing comparison video...thank you
+ExS Turned On No problem. Thanks for watching!
I tell you what, them oil bath filters are MESSY! I need to get me one of these!
This vid actually helped me
Glad to hear!
mncarguy what did it cost yu?
Around $250.. It sounds good and I'll never have to replace it's pretty overpriced.
For anyome asking or commenting on noticeable differences. The only noticeable difference an aftermarket intake is ever going to make is sound. That's going to be it %99.99 of the time. If by chance you end up getting better gas mileage it will be negligible. As far as acceleration is concerned, especially on an otherwise stock vehicle you might actually notice it being slower. This was actually true for me once, a few years ago on a BMW 335i. I had ordered a mountain of parts all at once. I was planning on doing some of the installs myself and started with new brakes and the cold air intake. I shit you not there was a noticeable difference in acceleration from a stand still. It was slower. Not long after I had full exhaust (not headers) and tune done. After all of that I had a pretty sizeable hp increase and better acceleration as well as sounding awesome. You can find people all over RUclips doing actual dyno runs and tests with just a CAI and sadly the results show that the majority of us have been taken, bamboozled, conned (u get the picture) for years. Albeit, adding an intake will typically sound pretty good. Oh, and to the owner of the truck, that's definitely a nice good looking truck, and sounds great man. Honestly that change in sound with just the intake is pretty impressive. That's definitely a cheaper route to get some sound out of it than an exhaust system. I guess, depending on how loud you want to be.
Chris Brewer i agree with you, i was eager to get this gear as a truck guy but honestly all it does is to change the sound. just look and hear cool
+dide quen "hear" ?? You mean "sound" ??
So you're contention is that the hundreds (maybe thousands?) of independently-made videos showing dyno tests of 10-15hp increases are all fake? I literally have yet to find even one single video of a dyno test that shows there's no or negligible difference after installing a cold air intake system.
* Waste, you idiot
DARK OVERLORD depends... stock air boxes are restrictive due to manufacturers & that depends on the vehicle as well. But if people want better performance you can go cold or short ram but you only gain performance if you have cooler air reaching the engine. Best thing to do is wrap the air intake tubing with a reflective heat sheet or wrap and an build your own heat resistant air box. The metal and plastic pieces of crap some manufacturers sell don’t really reflect he they are for looks & the further you can move you air intake from the engine the better. Air intakes do add performance! But only if done right!
I don’t think they address the issue of life of engine decline due to added stresses
It sounds a lot better with k&n.
Thanks for a great comparison video.Got one for Christmas, putting it on my Silverado tonight.Should sound nice paired with my flowmaster 40.
Yeah buddy! I had a super 40 on mine too and it sounded great with the CAI!
I just got rid of the resonator in my 2006 Colorado 5,3 and I’ve noticed more torque
True. But don't ever remove the catalytic converters; you'll lose all torque.
My 2012 nissan march is faster than that lol
Thank you for sharing this. I'm a female and wasn't sure what the difference would sound like and if I'd like it in my new truck. This was perfect and definitely what I needed to see. Thanks again! 💯

Super good video. Helps out a lot on when deciding on wether I should buy it
Nice video man. Besides the K&N do you have anything else installed. Like a flowmaster for example.
Yup, I have a true dual Flowmaster exhaust system with shorty Pacesetter headers. It was installed after this video so you can hear and see it here:

Nice truck, I love the interior on the 19 gmc’s!!! Oh wait sorry dude looks just like an 19
How was the performance between stock and modified?
10 to 13 horsepower gain.
Did you also get a dyno tube?
Well I see I’m a lil late to the party, 7 yes looking at the date but better late than never.
Really appreciate this video had a lot of questions and concerns and this answered them all, have a 1995 Chevy short wide had with a 4.3 and 345k on the motor 200k we’re mine personally it finally gave up on me, i got a 305 from a guy at work for the price of hauling it off it had 62,000 thsnd when pulled, threw it in my truck on a wknd. It’ll be a DD nothing special everyone said throw a cold air intake on it if I’m not gonna sell it to any at work or Ls swap it like everyone is doing and just Roll it till the wheels fall of or this motor goes out
Before and after is the same shit
Just did this to my silverado and didn’t get to send it to the max because of the snow but from what I heard I loved it
So much room under the hood yet still designed to sit right on the radiator hose smh. I have a gen 3 truck. Switched to an LS1 water pump with spacers so I can get my Intake off that damn hose
Engine temp change with cold air intake ?
wondering same.
Dude cold air intakes makes your car sound better and you could hear your engine and you could also hear it sucking air and you could see that the revs go faster a little
Id like to drive those trucks, i like the look of them but its not practical in England.
Yeah, these trucks would be pretty cumbersome over there. Especially with their horrible turning radius. Greetings from the US by the way! It's awesome knowing that people all over the world are watching my videos.
put a lift kit on it then you can just crawl overtop everyone.
Not a very fair video. The before portion was from a dead stop while the after portion you did a brake start. That in itself, even without the cold air intake, makes a big difference in acceleration. Can't fully rely on the beginning of this video. You can definitely rely on the noise differences though.
What cold air intake would you recommend for a 1993 Chevy C1500 350 engine. Only looking to pay around $150 or less.
I think this would be your best bet since it's a direct fit kit Sorry I'm not much help. I just prefer easy installation..

I hear the difference
I bought the $300 kit for my 03 Sierra and it did kinda sounded a bit good despite I bought the truck with an old Flowmaster on it at the time but I switched up the Flowmaster and sounds alot better but performance wise I need to get my truck tuned
Now you can upgrade that exhaust
Here's the truck in its current form:

Love how your truck sounds
Thanks!
Better response
It does alow more air in,but what about filtration
Aren't cold air intakes bad for your car in the long run?
What’s the difference between a cold air intake and a gas air intake
Wow, incredible. Stupidity is encouraged. That was just a total waste of time. But when you live in minnesawhta, it's important to find ways to maintain your sanity..........
Okay? lol Millions of other people install these too in case you didn't know.
It sounds better when you turn your phone to full screen.
Great video👌🏽
Videos don’t do justice trust me. This stuff is legit
fuck it, getting one for my lancer es cvt .
Bro, add some long tube headers & a Flomasters Super 44 Cat back system & watch that 5.3 come to life without breaking the bank.
How much does it improve fuel economy if it does?
To be honest it looks exciting and makes the muffler sound deeper but that’s it nothing else , it’s all in our minds
So the Intake made the tone of the exhaust change correct?
My cam and this intake will be super nice
it may be me but did anyone notice in the beginning first it looks like a slight incline and second is a downgrade?
+Jay Burke Same road, same day.
It is a mind thing. Actually it may slo down your vehicle. I got worse gas mileage with a cold air system. Fact.
Still sounds cool
Did you save gas?
Maybe 1 mpg. Definitely not what's advertised.
Thank you
