Same here. Same portfolio for software dev position, later on updated for tech lead and now CTO but still rolling the same portfolio made from a bootstrap template 😅

Some guy took portfolio to interview and interviewer asked if they could use his project if they hired him. I hope he got comission.
-If project looks clean, organized, great, it suggests code will be aswell. How you do anything is how you do everything.
-ABOUT ME, name, contact, statement. Education that matters. Kills, languages, what you can do.
-PROJECTS. Very business oriented, login, roles, db, admin screen, business function. Eg, blog, bug tracker, finance.
-Coding challenges.
Solve them, then make it look cool.
-Contact section at the bottom.
-Linkedin articles or your own coding blog.
-Prepare a demo of your portfolio and soft. This also shows a basic skill you will use weekly.

You *will* stand out with a good portfolio.
After the interview, send a thank you note, and you'll stand out even more. (Not just courteous ... It gives the hiring manager another reason to remember you.)
I'm not fake. I only send thank you notes if I'm thankful. I don't send them to manipulate some employer's feelings about me. That's despicable, tbh.
Sure I can understand how you think that is how our advice looks. I think it is a common courtesy to thank them for their time and consideration. That's all. But follow your best judgment.
@@philosophyofpolitics4504 I hear what you're saying, but a thank-you note doesn't have to be fake/grovelling/submissive - you can phrase it like any other follow-up email you might send to somebody who you're doing business with, on-a-level (as that's how you should be thinking about your relationship with a prospective employer). I think it just shows professional courtesy, and awareness of "how the world works". A huge part of working somewhere is communication and general social awareness.
Hello, so you would send and hand written thank you note via USPS? hard mail? (Better than just a linked in message and or an email). Just want to be clear...
This is better (and more) portfolio advice than I got in 4 years of college pursuing a Bachelor's in Software Engineering.
As somebody who has interviewed coders - this is all great advice!

@@CoderFoundry Absolutely! I think the key insight here is to do whatever you can to bridge the gap between your expertise "on paper" (which every applicant who passed CV screening has, pretty much by definition), and actually having the interviewer picture you working "for real" on a development team.
And the point about redirecting the conversation to be more like "talking shop" and explaining how stuff works (as opposed to just answering interview questions), is also a great one. Again, this helps the interviewer imagine how you'd be interacting if they hired you. You can do this to some extent even if you *are* just solving trivia problems on a whiteboard, by the way in which you speak/interact with the interviewer.
This advice was more clear and concrete than most developer portfolio videos I've seen. Thanks

Can I file a bug report? Although everything goes more or less smoothly, the highlighting of conversational points by cutting to a close-up needs to be done with a different background. The Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone poster has squared-off frame which sets it off from the wall, however in combination with the "zoom" effect, it looks to my brain like something sharp is making aggressive movements, which kinda distracts from the points you're trying to highlight.
Still though, I like the reasoning behind using a template - it's not cheating to make the portfolio look better to get hired, it's actually allowing the projects in the portfolio to receive notice because the portfolio itself isn't an eye-sore :)

@@mosesukwenya5605 or you can build a great portfolio from scratch in one-two weeks xP all based on your skillset. But anyway - better to have a portfolio buildt on a template than have no portfolio.
What if you are already working and may need to look for a different job because moving, or the contract/project is coming to an end? How best to showcase "lessons learned" in portfolio where you are working on something proprietary full time?

Does the technical writings include research papers? I'm torn on it, because there's always the good possibility the hiring manager is looking at it going "dafuq is this?"

You can always build your design template yourself but with the amazing templates already available why do it? Second we want people to get to market as fast as possible. But if you enjoy the design side of things go for it.
@@CoderFoundry Not sure if I was clear, I meant copy and build their design rather than create an original template: just to show that you are able to.

@@nickwoodward819 - The code is in the template in practically all cases but nobody is gonna copy the rewrite when that isn't the purpose of the template.

What's the point of including coding challenges, and many projects for that matter, when you could easily copy and paste the solutions, or in the case of projects merely code along with someone else instead of coding it yourself?
Well..if you put on it on your portfolio you need to be able to discuss the projects at a technical level.
I like the advice, but what about mobile developers? This is a web developer oriented portfolio, what do you think is the best portfolio for an Android/iOS developer? A project on a GitHub repo? An app published on its corresponding app store?
100%. I think it all depends on the job your applying for. If your applying for a job working on android or ios, be sure to include the link to those projects, and what your contribution to it was. By the end of your interview, you want your employer to be able to picture you working there. I don't think there is a sure fire portfolio that will get you the job, only by gearing your portfolio for the job you're seeking, will you gain the advantage over others. Find out what your employer is working on currently, and have demos that you have created showcasing a similar product.

Hey Hands, the portfolio in the demo is an actual students site. They self host (Azure) so we don’t want to send a bunch of traffic to their site and cause them to get traffic charges.
We’re working on a sample site and will have another video shortly with a walkthrough.
Does passing linkedin assesments count as coding challenges? Or stackoverflow?
Its fine but having a project on your portfolio is better.

Wait, what, nothing about having GitHub repos and contributing to open source projects??
So nothing wrong with those activities. But do not make it your only thing on the portfolio. But think about this.. If you are interviewing and HR or a Dev Manager is taking in resumes they may not have the time or expertise to review a git repo. But they could look at actual functioning apps. The portfolio is sales tool to get you to the interview. Then you use your projects as discussion points.

@@davidchou1675 True. We take all feedback. Sometimes is a hard balance for making the video too long.
Just have 2 buttons under each project description/image. One links to the deployed project, the other links to the github repo.

Sure. But you need more than that. It's kind of obvious that you built it though.

Depends if you are interviewing for science oriented jobs sure! My overall point is make something more than a toy project AND an app that someone understands.

what is a bug tracker ?
Apps and software in general have bugs (an incorrect behavior), so a bug tracker lets the developers to track those bugs. One example of that is Jira, you can google it and find out more about it. Hope it helps ;)

I don't think the coding challenges section is helpful. You can easily copy and paste that code. An employer is going to want you to be able to do those things on a whiteboard during the interview so it is better to make sure you understand it and know how to code it from memory.
We build those challenges into mini sites to make them better showcase pieces. Also, if you just copy and paste the code, you’ll never be able to talk about it. One question and the interviewer will know the interviewee didn’t write it.
Again, this mostly revolves around Web Development. For Software Development, a lot of this advice (revolving around auth/DB/blogs/banking/etc.) doesn't really count. It would be nice if you could title your videos to focus your target audience more. Your commentary is targetted almost exclusively for Web Devs.
I believe it's pretty well known that Coder Foundry is primarily web development and not software development. You wouldn't yell at a Python developer for not making C++ videos. Although I agree with you that it should be stated, development as a whole does fit though.
@@elitehaxxor8025 Search Engines do not know that Coder Foundry is primarily Web Development. I would complain to a Python Developer for not titling and thumb-nailing their videos appropriately, to the extent they showed up in C++ search results, and as a C++ programmer, I had to add to their view-count and watch time, just to find out the video was clickbait. My point is that "Web Developer", "Software Developer", and "Developer", should not be used interchangeably, as they are in this video. It's massively misleading, to the point of trick-bait. There is some good information within this video, but it's so marred by tunnel-visioned jargon that it easily gets lost. The commentary does not match the content.
