As someone who is a mix of both of those we share more than our name. Both cultures have kilts, both venerated bagpipes, both are known as highlanders, both carried the tribal culture and if you look at pictures of rural Scottish women of 50s you basically couldn't tell which were Albanian and which not.

According to tradition, when the early Aztecs moved into the Valley of Mexico, they saw an eagle perched on a cactus, with a rattlesnake in its beak. So they built Tenochtitlan on the island where the eagle had been. And of course, Tenochtitlan later became Mexico City.
The eagle is pictured on the Mexican flag.
So at least two countries were founded because of eagles carrying snakes.

Shqipëria as a name is recent (relatively)... dating to around 1400s and only commonly adopted by the 1700s. The name before that and until around the 1800s (except for some pockets of Albanians away from Albania) was Arbëria. Shqipëria itself is most likely from shqiptoj than shqiponjë, with the latter being a folk-etymology.

Shqiptoj derives from "shqip" which is the Albanian language in Albanian. The exact meaning of shqiptoj is "to pronounce".
Shqip means "the language of Shqipëria" that derives from "shqiponja", referring to the two-headed eagle in the Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu's flag and to the bird, which is a proud animal and loves the freedom, just as Albanians.

Arberet were an Illyrian tribe like Dardanet, Taulantet etc. So no, Arberia was just a small province of todays Albania reaching from the Albanian/Montenegrian Alps to Saranda. Also Laberia, todays region from Saranda to Himare is just a slavic transliteration of Arberia, because a lot of Southern Albanians are of Slavo-Dinarian heritage and not Illyrian. We have proofs for that in Geneology. Brother, we are not Shkiet, who are lying about history in every book of them, claimin Jesus Christ to have spoken serbian (ridiculous). We are Albanians, a truthfull people, who hasnt anything to hide. Also the Southern Albanians and some of Shkoder, who actually are of slavic heritage are perfectly integrated and are a part of Albania, not Serbia. Thats why we are exact when speaking about history. We are not afraid of the past like our neighbours.

I think part of why Patrick used the bald eagle is to visually specify that the bird is an eagle, as the bald eagle is a species that is easily recognizable across cultures. The toponym Shqiperia is not related to eagles. It stems from the verb "Shqipoj" in old Albanian which means to "understand" and is a cognate of latin verb Excipio.
The verb Shqipoj is still in use in the Albanian diazpora in Ukraine, but no longer in the homeland.
The verb Shqipoj gave rise to the ethnonym Shqiptar which means "The one who understands".
The ethonym Shqiptar gained traction upon the spread of Islam in Albania and it was used to clarify that though muslim and christian Albanians practiced religions alien to each other they could understand each other.
It made sure that the sense of common identity persisted.
The new ethnonym Shqiptar gave rise to the new toponym Shqiperia.

"The language of the Albanians is unformed and adulterated. In many areas Italian elements have been incorporated into the language, in others Greek and in others Slavonic. Therefore Albanians who live fifty or sixty miles apart do not understand each other. In addition, there are racial differences between the Gegs who live in the wild north and the Tosks in the less rugged south. One would say that they belong to different ethnicities. And indeed this is the case. It would be easy to prove that the Albanians are not one people but half a dozen peoples."

Albania getting invaded for thousands of years from all kind of kingdoms while being one on its own has definitely adapted throughout the years not only people from all around the world but cultures, languages, movies in the latest years from India, China etc. What unites the Albanians mainly is the language which has survived and its so rich and they give so much emphasis to the words they use and the meaning of them, NOT religioussnes or any kind of symbols, a country with different values. Somewhere was written that the meaning of the double headed Eagle is the connection of East and West (one head looks left and the other right), black and red if I remember well had something to do about bloodshed. Not sure about the accuracy of this video. The name Albania derives from the Illyrian tribe of Albanoi, who lived in the present day territory of Albania. There is also the city of Albanopoli located in Albania. The medieval Albanians called themselves "Arber" and the country "Arberia", which was the way the locals pronounced the term "Albania" and is inherited from the Arberesh communities in Italy and Arvanites in Greece. The meaning of the name "Shqiperia" is not related to the word "shqiponja" for eagle, but from the word "shqiptoj" which means "to pronounce" or "to speak the albanian language" which is called "shqip".

  • @PrizrenaliZH
    @PrizrenaliZH 3 месяца назад

You have a lot of mistakes in this video. I've spent my life on this topic:
    1. Shqiperia comes from Shqipetar, which in translation means: the one who speak clearly (te shqipetosh) or who is able to speak our language. So the land of the people who speak clearly (their Albanian language). It is a misconception to believe it has something to do with the eagle (Shqiponja), even if you are right with that funny myth about the snake and the eagle. But it remains a myth. Reality is, that the word Shqipetar is newer than the word Albanoi. So we are totaly fine people calling us Albanians.
    2. Albania is derived from the Illyrian tribe of the Arbers and the Romans spread the name of the Arbers. They just called them Albanoi instead of Arbanoi. But modern Albanians are descendants of a lot Illyrian tribes, not only the Arbers. Also the Dardanians, Taulantians, Penestians, Pirustians etc. Most Kosovarians are Dardanians, while most Albanians are Arberians. But we are heavily mixed. We are the outcome of Illyria.
    3. Albanians are not alone on that tribe of Arbanoi, also the Arberesh in Italy (around 2 Mio people) are descendents of the Arbanoi. They speak a similar language (mixed with Italian and Sicilian).
    4. The Thracians were a neighbouring people, not our occupators. The are relatives of us, who spoke a similar language. They lost their language due to heavy latin and slavic impact. We kept it. But still in todays Romanian some words can be explained by Albanians.
    5. Albanian is similar to old greek! While the new greek is called "greek", they have 0 similarities to old greek. Albanian does! I guess, thats the old greek impact on the Illyrians which we derived.
    6. The eagles symbol in a lot of peoples flags world wide in Heraldic means "Freedom". We might have adopted it from the Byzantines. They also had heavy impact on our country. Anyways the 2 heads in our flag have a different meaning: its the connection between 2 subpeople joining in 1 body. Northern Albanians are Gegis and Southern Albanians are Toskis. We speak 2 different main dialects of our language, but still the eagle connects us to 1 body or 1 people.
Another fun fact, which I believe to be an accident: I did a YDNA paternal heritage test 6 years ago. It came out that I am of Illyrian heritage and that my ancestors lived 10 thousend years ago already in the land of todays Albania and Montenegro. But on the migration map, it showed me that before that, we were living in today Schottland region. And that I have blood relatives in Schottland. But I really believe thats just by accident.

Albania is called Albania because of the Alban tribe of ancient Illyrians that lived in Illyrian Peninsula (today Balkan Peninsula). Their central settlement was called Albanopolis, the central part of present-day Albania. So, the name Albania is not an English word, but the name of an ethnic ancient Illyrian people. The Albanians of Kosova, for example are Dardanians of Illyrian people. After the fall of Illyrian Kingdoms the names Albani/Albanoi and Arbanitai/Albanitai referred to medieval Albanians as an ethnic group for all Illyrians.
Why is Shqiperia called Albania in English, is a wrong question!

Correct!! croatia and horvatska, albania and sqiperia/ arnaut, georgia and grusinia or sarkatvelo or hungary and magyar and many many others. So nobody sees the obvious connection here?? Everybody is indoctrinated by their countries nationalism. The reason why all those countries have an official name and a real own name is that those nations were all created by foreign powers from outside who sought power in those regions owned by other empires and tried by war and propaganda to create nations based on historic existing states millenials ago! BUT those people living in this areas today never have been those nations created by powers from far outside. So all those nations are literarly inventions as not the people created their own states basednon their own culture, no others created fairly tale states which they wanted to annex in the end. But those artificial states became independent and the leaders of those states started systematically to indoctrinate their people into these artificial states. So all of those states are fake states with no history no nothing .. just inventions from others FOR others. Nationalism destroyed those facts and made a fairy tale out of those ridiculous states. A good example is hungary where blonde white ethnic north europeans pretend to be an asian former nomadic tribe because they speak this weird language from east asia but cant connect to east asia as theyre no asians and their.cultures is european not asian. This.is.the reason for hardcore nationalsim when a modern nation can not connect with their so called past. The same goes for albania a state.created by italia for the christian minority in this region but the people there were predominantly muslims. Today they forgot this only nationalism remains..

I might be able to explain the name Shqiperia that goes back to Pyrrhus of Epirus even earlier than him. After military expeditions in Asia minor Pyrrhus returns to Albania (Epirus) where he's given the title "Son of the Eagle" or Order of the Eagle. The name Shqip comes from the Eagle's sound Skip, Shqip and Shqiptar. TOR=TAR=TAN=TER is a suffix that means (ALL) so having said that we have Shqiperia meaning Sons and Daughter of the Eagle. During the Roman conquest the land was called Superiore by the Romans. Supe means our shoulders and Periore means Epirus or just Epir or Eper meaning Upper and Advantage in English. Barra mi Supe means Burden on your shoulders. Best of luck from Dardania.

@@danielndou9414 It is. Slavs use it as a anti Albanian slur. Most use it in daily life like normally when not even speaking about Albanians.

The term "Shqiptar" comes from the word "Shqiptoj" meaning to pronounce (correctly), so to say "Shiptar" instead of "Shqiptar" is an insult to the very definition of the word. It is used as a slur by Serbs who are incapable of pronouncing the word correctly. And like wise, Serbs are called "Shkije" or "Shkavel" in Albanian.
