Actually it may have a connection with him because he loved arm wrestling, to convince people to join him he have to proof that he was strong, one of the tests was arm wrestling with them,
Men like Skanderbeg are those people who would have been great conquerors if they had enough resources. With a small empire, they can at best turn out to be great defenders, as Skanderbeg was.
Not that obvious, some men thrive in defensive wars, taking advantage of terrain, troops morale and enemy overconfidence, but aren't very good at exploiting large armies and numerical advantages. Take Robert E. Lee, for example. His greatest victories were defensive battles against superior northern numbers, but as soon as he went on the offensive, he got beaten back. Ultimately, it was Grant's mastery of logistics and good use of his numbers and industrial advantage that allowed him (who, by all acounts, wasn't a "tactical genius", unlike men like Mc Clellan) to overcome Lee. Then again, it was a particular context. As were Skanderberg's times and achievements. Don't get me wrong, the man is a genius, but it's a bit of a shortcut to think he'd have been just as great a conqueror as he was a defender for his people.
@@altrias2455 the only problem with that is that he did fight in offensive war in Naples as he had an alliance with Naples and helped crush their rebellion

I had only vaguely heard of Skanderbeg, and feel totally guilty for my own ignorance… Having just watched this, have to say, on this particular battle, his tactics were almost on a par with Hannibal… Definitely reading up on Skanderbeg…
people say that skanderbeg had the advantage of knowing ottoman tactics, but there are hundreds of balkan generals in the ottoman ranks and never achieved what skanderbeg achieved.(also people act like the ottomans didnt know what tactics skanderbeg used in battle, they even had his nephew show them all of his tactics before the battle of albulena and he still defeated them having only 8k soldiers against 80k turks.) he was already an incredible general in the ottoman army and the sultan really loved him. his first battles actually happend in anatolia for the turks and also won all of them.
I think the will of the Albanians to be free played a role as well, as they say “ I am not scared of the enemy I’m facing I’m more scared loosing the ones I’m defending “
On Torvioll's field, blades did gleam, In fourteen forty-four, a rebel's dream. Skanderbeg, a lion, rose that day, Against Ottoman might, in fierce array. Swords clashed, a thunderous sound, Albanian spirit, resolute and unbound. Skanderbeg's rebellion, a flame anew, On Torvioll's soil, a saga to pursue. In defiance's dance, a hero was born, Torvioll's echoes, freedom's horn. Albania's lion, in rebellion's light, For liberty, they fought that day and night.
Only a small correction. You removed from the alliance and from the map the Albanian kindom of Shpataj, which were the leaders of Epirus, today Greek land. Beautiful documentary. Great job.
There are many little known battles of Skanderbeg, they finally started covering unknown battles instead of recycling a few known battles. I congratulate them on this!
John Hunyadi, Skandeberg, Michael the Brave, Stephen the Great - all great men who fought the Ottomans at their zenith. These men struggled against insurmountable odds during the darkest days of the 15th and 16th centuries. Sobieski beat the Turks at Vienna and Eugene of Savoy kicked them out of Hungary but it is these men who were the true 'Athleta Christi'
The level of patience needed to not bring in your calvary is crazy! A general with any less courage would have panicked and called them in immediately. Waiting for the exact second that you are about to be overrun to call them in. Damn that is the callings of a truly great leader.
Great video! Thank you for the word "Recalcitrant" and for those looking for the definition: "having an obstinately uncooperative attitude towards authority or discipline."
A wonderful, informative historical coverage about skander beg & his political, military footage beneath vast history pages of Ottoman empire history....allot thanks (history Marche)channel
Nice video but therr are are some inconsistencies. The most notable is that the map of Albania is always from Seman river and above, while its widely known that the best allie of Skandebeg was his father in law, Gjergj Arjaniti, and his main fortesses and people were in Kanina and Borsh, down south near Vlora and Saranda. It just feels that you didnt want to break some modern greek's feelings with this video. Anyways, thank you.
Awesome video and great care for details. It's must be painful for Skandeber to still loyal for the Ottomans when his ancestral homeland is destroyed and his father is stripped of the lands and power. Its cool to see Skandeberg to be able rise from his dark time. I hope if You still covering Skandberg campaign, we could get a glimpse on how Albanians army looked like. Did they employ Heavy Cavalry and Heavy Infantry, or with their limited resources they can't field that? Or like the fashion of Eastern Europe, they use horse archers and light cavalry? Did they use muskets?
@Gjergj Kastrioti Yes! Would love to see them explored deeper. They also regarded as high quality mercenaries during Italian wars. We have lot of people talk about Varangian Guard, Hungarian Black Army, Roman Legionnaires, Greek Hoplites, would be nice to see Stradioti got one
The albanian medieval army evolved over time, in the beggning he had archers and footmen equiped wiyh swords and other weapons of the time meanwhile there were 3k stradiotes, 5k volunters and 500 black army soldiers
The most dangerous enemies and figures of resistance to aggressive expanding empires are the ones that are raised and trained amongst them, learning their tactics and strategies to a tea, enabling them to turn them against their former masters to great affect and inflict massive defeats on them in the process.

Actually it may have a connection with him because he loved arm wrestling, to convince people to join him he have to proof that he was strong, one of the tests was arm wrestling with them,
Same in BG
I wonder why?
indeed , now i woke up too , i’m from ro too
@@autariatalili The legend says that he had very strong arms and that no one ever managed to beat him. Maybe that's why!
Men like Skanderbeg are those people who would have been great conquerors if they had enough resources. With a small empire, they can at best turn out to be great defenders, as Skanderbeg was.
no lol he was a average general
@@darkz1563 lol stop trolling bro. The man never lost a battle.
@@darkz1563 But that "average general" managed to win while often outnumbered and outgunned.
@@altrias2455 the only problem with that is that he did fight in offensive war in Naples as he had an alliance with Naples and helped crush their rebellion
Incredible history documentary, keep up the great work!
What a fantastic video! I hope this is the beginning of a series on the battles of Skanderbeg.
Knew that Skanderbeg was a military genius since I am a EU4 player, a detailed example of his achievements on the battlefield is very welcomed to expand my knowledge about him. Well done!
Theres much more about him..
This isn’t even the greatest victory. The greatest victory was albulena 10k Albanians against 60k ottomans
YOOOO you made a Skanderbeg vid as promised. I've been waiting for this for 2 years. Thank you so much
this guy really reminds me of Hannibal's tactics in the 2nd punic wars. all that terrain usage and trickery. I want to see more of this guy!
Dear History Marche team, your research and effort into making these epics is truly commendable and absolutely brilliant. As an Indian, i would love to see your documentary about the Anglo-Mysore wars.
I’m so glad to see my suggestion. I was hoping you guys would cover Skanderbeg. Definitely the best History channel
I believe he read some of the classics because that looked like something out of Caesar's playbook. I hope there's more on this guy. Excellent as always Historymarche. Cheers from Tennessee
Do you ever wonder how they would have fared against Caesar's legio X?
Check out the battle of Albulena on this guy
Even before him Albanians used small armies to face their opponents Albanians were also exellent cavalryman before Skandebeg arrival a pope delegate sent to Constantinople assured the emperor that Albanian were ready to create an army of 15.000 riders if the neccessary funds were given to them
@@williammillar2892 Check his masterpiece at Albulena the same tactic he will use agaisnt Caesar if that does not work out he would go to north Albanian and ambush Caesar legions there
@@erickbehari6740 thanks it was the Ottomans I meant, as both used large formations rather than skirmishing.
Man I just found this video and now I have to wait for the next one. Its like a cliff hanger in a book. Excellent job as always!
Check kings and generals about scanderbeg.
Torvioll is minor to what he did to ottomans in battle of Albulena near Kruje.

So glad to see you covering Skanderbeg! Historymarche, your breadth and depth are incredible!
A video to resume Sgenderbeg life would be much apreciated because a lot of people dont know how a great general he was.A true legend

Imagine the cinematic scene of the calling of the hidden troops. :)
Wow! I hope there is more about Skanderbeg!
Bravo Exelent .Hello from Montenegro
thank you for this inciteful video. Never knew about the Albanians history against the ottomans.
The Albanian history is a history of a nation in war for centurys .
We are surrender with the enemys .
We fight in same time aggainst Ottomans , Serbs , and Greeks .
Some of the neighbouring countrys acuse us for collaborating with Italian fashists or German Natzis .
We collaborate with them bicose they help as liberate from Greek and Serbs fashists .
We was at war with this countrys that surround us for about 1000 years .
Half of a Albanian land or Albanian nation lives in teritory out of Albanian state .
You can understand now how it was .
30% of Montenegro are Albanians
95% of Kosova is Albanian
70% of Preseva walley is Albanian
40% of North Macedonia is Albanian
More than 300 villages in Greece are Albanian .
The region of Sanđak in central Serbia is 60% of Albanian
As a Russian, I haven‘t forgotten about the Albanian Bataillons in the Russian Army from 1775 - 1859 who fought against the Ottoman Empire.
🇷🇺🤝🏻🇦🇱
Can you tell us more about it?
My Hats of to Skanderbeg and All his Men. Bravo!
Thank you very much for liking my comment
one of the most underrated dudes in history
He is among the best generals and strategists the world has ever seen!

What a battle!!! Such brave soldiers to stand there against the odds, and holding their ground until the enemy committed completely... Brave souls...
Thank You so much for dedicating your effort to the great Skanderberg! Hopefully, you will continue with the rest of his battles. 🙏🏻
In general I love your videos. But much love for including Albanian history in your videos.
Very interesting! This period of history is not familiar to me, so it is good to learn more about these battles.
Terrific. Love the narration and pre-battle explanation of events. Really entertaining stuff!
I had only vaguely heard of Skanderbeg, and feel totally guilty for my own ignorance…
Having just watched this, have to say, on this particular battle, his tactics were almost on a par with Hannibal…
Definitely reading up on Skanderbeg…
There are more videos about him, check Knowledgia’s and Kings and Generals’ videos about Skanderbeg
people say that skanderbeg had the advantage of knowing ottoman tactics, but there are hundreds of balkan generals in the ottoman ranks and never achieved what skanderbeg achieved.(also people act like the ottomans didnt know what tactics skanderbeg used in battle, they even had his nephew show them all of his tactics before the battle of albulena and he still defeated them having only 8k soldiers against 80k turks.)
he was already an incredible general in the ottoman army and the sultan really loved him.
his first battles actually happend in anatolia for the turks and also won all of them.
Exaggerated!
He was a genius military tactician ahead of his time. He challenged the superpower of the time and beat it every single time.
@@blackcat.19a skilful military officer but exaggerated
I think the will of the Albanians to be free played a role as well, as they say “ I am not scared of the enemy I’m facing I’m more scared loosing the ones I’m defending “
@@admirosmani3765 how so ? Exaggerated on what ?
On Torvioll's field, blades did gleam,
In fourteen forty-four, a rebel's dream.
Skanderbeg, a lion, rose that day,
Against Ottoman might, in fierce array.
Swords clashed, a thunderous sound,
Albanian spirit, resolute and unbound.
Skanderbeg's rebellion, a flame anew,
On Torvioll's soil, a saga to pursue.
In defiance's dance, a hero was born,
Torvioll's echoes, freedom's horn.
Albania's lion, in rebellion's light,
For liberty, they fought that day and night.
Thank You! Great video of the legendary commander
Only a small correction. You removed from the alliance and from the map the Albanian kindom of Shpataj, which were the leaders of Epirus, today Greek land. Beautiful documentary. Great job.
Very well done! I was completely unfamiliar with Skanderbeg
He held off the ottoman
Empire for 20 years inflicting 19 defeats - each time he was outnumbered at least 2 to 1
There are many little known battles of Skanderbeg, they finally started covering unknown battles instead of recycling a few known battles.
ALSO VLAD THE IMPALER!

Words cannot describe how much i LOVE these history channels. Keep up the good work❤
The level of patience needed to not bring in your calvary is crazy! A general with any less courage would have panicked and called them in immediately. Waiting for the exact second that you are about to be overrun to call them in. Damn that is the callings of a truly great leader.
You never mess with them Albanians when skanderbeg is leading the reins, the original og turk slayer!

Well done. Thank you for sharing.
Anyways, thank you.
my favorite part of a new historymarche video is just seeing how small or big the byzantine empire is around constantinople at the time

The complex formation of the Albanian army fielded against the otoman army double its size, shows what a genial strateg Scanderbeg was.
I love the story of akanderbeg being a Chad and repeatly defeating army after army of the ottomans
Awesome as always. Skanderbeg!
The most dangerous enemies and figures of resistance to aggressive expanding empires are the ones that are raised and trained amongst them, learning their tactics and strategies to a tea, enabling them to turn them against their former masters to great affect and inflict massive defeats on them in the process.
Arminus had Augustus a thousand miles away on the ground crying for his legions back but they’re dead. Yea Arminus was raised in Rome. 😂
