You dont need to be at TDC, the guides keep the chain on the cam sprocket, you would have to run rhe motor without the tensioner in it before it jumps timing. Just lock the brakes in case your on the down compression stroke the crank wont move👍
So we don't to take off the oil pump cover and wedge the chain to keep the right from rolling back and jumping teeth? I keep reading things that say one should. Or does that only apply when installing a new hydraulic tensioner?
Good vid man, a couple of questions on it. Do you recommend doing the engine running portion of the cam chain check? Would the quarter turn in from the really loose setting be about the same as the quarter turn out from all the way in? I went to my local shop and they put one of these on my bike before I knew it. Not that it's particularly bad, I just like to check my own stuff, and it sounds a little tight. thanks
It’s best to set it before starting the bike...the last thing you want is it too be too loose and jump a tooth and ruin your engine! Yes you don’t want it too tight either..that’s what the 1/4 turn back does 👍🏻👍🏻
Really wish you would have mentioned how easy it is to jump a tooth or mess up the timing. Overtightened mine slightly. Now the engine will not turn over by hand and will not crank. Going to cost a lot more now
You did something grossly wrong. Slightly tightening or loosing will not jump timing unless you ran it and backed the nut way out first. Never adjust it when running..
Okay thank you. My tensioner comes in today. Hoping it fixes my issue. Top dead center line seems a little difficult to find. Is it just at the bottom portion of the split? And I line the line above the T to it?
I'm reading the comments on how the ticking goes away when bike is warmed up, but my ticking only occurs after my bike is fully warmed up and riding around for over 10 mins. Could this still be the CCT or would it be the famous yamaha tick everyone is talking about. (03 r6)
great vid thanks man. do you think if the bike started to rattle loud mid ride and lost power it would be too late for CCT? No oil leaks or smoke and bike will start up fine but sounds like marbles rattling.... I checked chain tension and exhaust side seems very tight im wondering if i caught it too late and it jumped timing or if a CCT would fix this? Thanks
So if it’s too loose it’ll make a ticking noise is that correct? I have a ticking noise on my R1 when it’s starts up but goes away after it’s warmed up.
@@joshharrison1169 I replaced it myself with the stock TCT. It took forever because 03 gen was located by the frame. I had to take the gas tank off and air box. Still was a very tight space. After replacing the ticking noise only appears for a few seconds after start up and then disappears. Better than constant ticking from before
Extra step to be safe...as long as you turn the engine a full revolution and be sure the tensioner is set properly you will be fine. You seen me adjust it while the bike was running...just be very careful it isn’t too loose or the chain could jump a tooth and damage your engine.
@@JDSPerformance25 cool. i appreciate the quick reply. also. whats the lifespan on the timing chain? bike only has 30k. miles. its a 06 yamaha r6. has the same ticking sound in a video i just watched and im pretty sure it will go away with a manual tensioner. by just looking at the chain can you get some kind of indication of the wear and tear?
Better tutorial than APE’s website! For that I give a like and a comment. You are kickass!
Thanks buddy 👍🏻 Gotta give good info on a how to 🤣👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the video bro. Very straightforward and helpful.
Happy to hear it helped. You’re welcome!
@@JDSPerformance25 Question, did you plug the oil hole? If so what you used?
@@JDSPerformance25if you take out the OEM hydraulic do you have to plug the oil hole on the bike that used to feed the OEM tensioner?

Changed it in my Fz6. Thanks
can I use this video to help me do my '04 fz6?
@nawrfsideshawty yes it is very similar
excellent vid! I guess such manual tensioner you have to check from time to time as chain gets older.
Not as often as you’d think. As long as you’re not hearing any rattling you’re all good 👍🏻.
Agreed

I bought one off eBay for my bike also was the cylinder part of the tensioner way smaller than the hole on your and would you have an update on it
Hi, thanks for the video. Can i know where do u get the cct with oil passage blocked. Doesnt seem APE cct block this oil passage.
Almost took mine to the shop. This is a ez diy
Thanks bro!! Your awesome
Thanks for the video 👍🏼
You’re welcome!
I have a question man, I installed it and the bike seems to have a sort of whining noise coming from the bottom right where the cam chain tensioner is
Can't remember exactly but the chain is to loose or tight when whining

If my chain is at top dead center could the tensioner still be the reason it gives it the rattling noise?
It’s almost always the tensioner…unless you have a broken guide or the chain is stretched.
Okay thank you. My tensioner comes in today. Hoping it fixes my issue. Top dead center line seems a little difficult to find. Is it just at the bottom portion of the split? And I line the line above the T to it?
You go a full revolution on the tensioner bolt not the 12mm bolt where you turn it to top dead center correct?
ur head gasket leaks? fixed?
Head gasket leaks??? This is a timing chain tensioner rattle fix video 👍🏻

Did you figure it out? I hav an 03 as well
@ritorod7121 never figured it out. Even changes the tensioner and still did it. Ended up selling it for 2x more than I paid for it.
@@Shawn855 did you get your valve clearance checked too?
@@Shawn855haha nice!
Maybe it's time to change timing chain? Maybe it got old?
No this is a common problem. The factory tensioner wears out before the chain does.

Hmmm...as long as it still runs...definitely fix it and don’t run it anymore until you do 👍🏻

Yes that is correct.
that's what my r6 is doing im scared to mess this up

i have an 07 r6 is it possible to get a new TCT from stores ? i dont wanna wait for this i want to get this done now
I tried doing this but i cant turn the engine is there a reason why?
I need alot more information please
What Cam tensioner is this one
I got it off ebay 👍🏻
Does it have to be a TDC to put the tensioner? Or is that just a extra step to be safe?
