My son jokes with me that when he was in little league when some kid struck out his mom yelled "Nice swing Johnny!" When my son struck out I would later ask him "What were you swinging at?" He thanks me again and again for being honest with him and encouraging him to continually get better rather than accept mediocrity or failure.

This is well intended. I can say with a pain to my heart I gave false praise and my child was not the better for it.

This is exactly why you need strong parents and specifically strong fathers. It might sound cruel to most people but I have never allowed my son to beat me in anything. Ever! One day he will beat me and whatever game that we were playing but he's going to beat me because he is better at it and I want him to strive to be better than I am. How could he possibly strive to be better than me if I let him win his entire life. Competition, adversity, being okay with losing is all part of life. I have said for many years now that we are living with the end result of the participation trophy.

We had 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Everyone else was a loser who just got a purple participation ribbon. So when I competed I always wanted to be in the top 3 and when I was it felt AMAZING! The main lesson is, not everyone can win every time. Learn how to lose gracefully and work hard to win next time.

I was designated 'gifted' as a child (went through an assessment process so it was 'legit') and was basically the golden child but my mother also heaped a lot of false praise onto me because even though I was good at a lot of things I also had my limitations like every person does. Now as an adult I've accomplished a fair amount of things but nothing particularly extraordinary and I sort of resent my mother for having given me a false sense of confidence even though she had the best of intentions. One of the hardest lessons I've had to learn as an adult is knowing my limitations and that no one can possibly be good at everything and that that is okay.

I forget now which personality I heard this from but it is so sobering. A Cuban migrant was talking with his friends when one of them observed how lucky they were to be born in American and the Cuban had to correct them that he was the luckiest of all them because he had someplace to go to escape Communism. Have no doubt it is coming and it Will Always be coming unless and until we give up in our refutation of that ideology.

  • @rickhanson3293

In my case, it was generally the opposite. I barely received praise for anything for years on end so that even later when receiving it and being assured that it was for valid achievement I did not want it or still felt that I had really failed in a terrible way and was just being lied to. As far as "purple", people in my house (not me mind you as I just liked the color) declared it to be a sign of royalty and thought they should not have to do anything at all while quite literally locking me in the basement on several occasions (and I truly mean that LITERALLY). So to hear of his thoughts about this is very refreshing and I don't want the above to be taken as complete negativity about life but to demonstrate why I agree with his take.

The participation trophy is what has negatively affected mental health. You earn your spot on a sports team. You earn championship titles by winning in the final, not getting a visit to the White House if you come in 2nd. You earn your win when you compete in your own gender’s competition.

Any child who grew up Russian knows that! It is sad to me to see people who are in their late 40's early 50's (especially women) who are like that - cannot take any criticism, cannot take the fact that some people don't like them, and mostly cannot deal with the fact that their work is just not good enough. The American notion that "no child left behind" and "everyone is good at everything" blahblahblah leads to disillusion, magical thinking and dissociation from the truth. TELL IT LIKE IT IS, even if it hurts.

Gary is a pure con man. Either Megyn has a hard time getting quality guests or her staff really dropped the ball researching him. This really lowers the stature of the show IMO.
