Many of you know that I sang some backing vocals for Devin Townsend's upcoming album "Lightwork", set to release later this year. And as I haven't had the pleasure to listen to the album just yet, getting exclusive early access to the second single Devin's releasing is just absolute gold. And I WAS NOT EXPECTING THIS!!!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Devin Townsend's new single "Call of the Void" for the first time.

The way you emotionally conntect with music is so beautiful to share with you, thanks so much for this channel it makes my life better. You are amazing. I hope your life is filled with love.
Because of your love for Devin Townsend, you should look into his oft-collaborator, Ché Aimee Dorval. Her voice is one the most beautiful on the planet.
Been hassling you for ages to revisit Devy. Would still love to see what you think of his incredible, powerful delivery of The Death of Music (live at Royal Albert). Even he gets goosebumps in the performance.
I've seen this a few times in the comments. I'm certain it will be on my long list after we tally the likes in a few days!
@@TheCharismaticVoice I’ll have my fingers crossed to see it on ur channel one day! So much versatility, power and emotion in one song. Even if it doesn’t make your list to react to…I highly recommend watching it in ur own time.
Bump for this it’s so good.
Love that song but the version of it that i've fallen in love with is the one from the quarantine concert. In fact that whole show is incredible start to finish
I've admired Devin and his work for many years - I have no problem with him delivering something radio-friendly with this single. His concerts, his tours and his ideas are usually very, very expensive. He should (and he must) earn the money he has always deserved.
Devin is amazing, and is so humble and gracious. He deserves so much more than he receives.
@@TheCharismaticVoice Nothing is more true than this.
@@TheCharismaticVoice there will be 2 new albums from devin! lightwork and nightwork
Devin's been releasing radio friendly stuff for decades... The first Devin Townsend album ("Infinity") from 1998 is as full of tracks like this as it is with weird, experimental stuff like "Bad Devil" or "Noisy Pink Bubbles." "Addicted" is basically a radio hard rock album which he released in 2009 and is one of my favorites. "Ghost" from 2011 is an entire album of extremely mellow, soft rock.
Ocean Machine has certain tracks on there which are as accessible as it gets (IE: "Regulator") for a hard rock band, and that was released back in 1997. If anything, he was getting far more success with his heavy metal band, Strapping Young Lad at the time he released "Infinity" and "Ocean Machine"... If he was doing it for financial reasons, those projects wouldn't have made sense, and breaking up SYL right as their popularity peaked back then would make even less sense.
He did reform SYL a couple years after he broke it up initially... But he claimed that all the craziness in the wake of 9/11 and the start of the war on terror was his justification for reforming the band. I recall as I was lucky enough to see them live both before and after that hiatus... and they became a LOT more popular in the years after that hiatus until he disbanded them again to focus on The Devin Townsend Project for similar reasons as to why he broke up SYL in the first place.
None of that sounds like a musician who has any need to make choices based on finances, it sounds like he is only at the mercy of his inspiration.
He makes a good living as an independent artist; he has no record company debts to worry about or the cost of the overhead for belonging to such a large organization. He has more money than he really knows what to do with at this point, even when he spends a lot on production of his albums and his live show.
Back in the late 90ies he was a lot closer to a starving artist, there were jokes about in the linear notes of the first two SYL albums, but nowadays he's pretty much the model for a successful independent artist. He really doesn't need to adjust his aesthetics to anyone.
@@rexlupis "at the mercy of his inspiration"! well said. I appreciate that he is able to go wherever his muse takes him. I love Addicted, start to finish.
I love the combo of Devin and Anneke's voice. It's so lovely
Yup, both voices create something bigger, than just two voices.
Perfection.
A new Devin Townsend release is always special. Knowing that Elizabeth is going to be on the album somewhere is icing on the "Awesomecake". Now you're telling us that you're going to react to a new song reveal tomorrow? I need to sit down...
Haha, right?!

@@TheCharismaticVoice whaaaaaaatttt! Absolutely hell yes😂❤❤😂
@@TheCharismaticVoice Omg awesome!! So awesome!
Given that his voice has a little more levity in this, I might describe it as Levy-Devy!
Oh my goodness Jay, that is absolutely brilliant!!! I love it. Levy-Devy!
@@TheCharismaticVoice Okay, totally off the subject here, but... Do you and Kirk have library cards? Does your local library participate in the One-thousand Books Before Kindergarten (1KBK) program? @@TheCharismaticVoice you have a handful of Devin videos. A Devy-Bevy?
You always have some of the best reviews/reactions out there and really appreciate the in-depth analysis! I'd love to see a reaction to Devin Townsend's "The Death of Music" live performance from Royal Albert Hall sometime and get your take on it.
I want to have more Devin on the channel, so I will keep this in mind!
@@TheCharismaticVoice I'm pretty sure that was the performance where he had goosebumps during his own performance (and he wasn't alone).. it's incredible!
@@TheCharismaticVoice I can't think of a better song of his to react to. He actually puts the guitar down for this one. It's just freaking incredible.
100 percent! I would love to see you're analysis of the three of them - funeral, bastard, death of music.
Beautiful trio when listened one to one after the other
I 100% agree. That performance is astounding. It hits me in the feels every time and gives me chills.
If you like soft Devy, you should listen to Ghost. It's a beautiful lullaby. Ki is also softer and jazzy.
A fabulous piece of work. Layering like this is PURE CLASS. The mixing on this is state of the art. Never heard of him until 20 minutes ago, what a wonderful find.
Musicianship and a fantastic ear for light and shade. I'd give a 10/10.
You should also check out his song "Hear Me", particularly the drum playthrough video from 66Samus (the drummer on the original recording), just to illustrate the diversity of his musical creativity...
Speaking of collaborating with Devin, you've yet to really feature long-time Devin friend and collaborator Anneke Van Giersbergen. Afaik you've only touched on her in passing one time. A grave oversight. She's an amazing singer with a unique style compared to other female metal vocalists, and a trailblazer who single-handedly popularized female-fronted metal. There's really only one place to start, and it's the song that launched her into every '90s teenage metalhead's dreams, Strange Machines by The Gathering.
YES! Absolutely more Anneke!
She's good but her vibrato makes her sound like a chipmunk.
Mandylion is a great album, I’ve been a fan since I heard it the first time.
oh yes if she could cover My Electricity I would be so happy! And her in New Reign or Supercrush or Hyperdrive for Devin collabs-!
None of what you say seems relevant, it's just about the views and the subscriptions.
Lovely Devin ❤️ The railway is in Norway and it says "Good Trip" on the train seats 😃
"God Jul" is "Merry Chistmas" in Swedish and Norwegian, though. "Good trip" would be "God tur" in Norwegian. The other signs in the same scene are in Norwegian.
Didn't know you would be on Lightwork! That's awesome! Congrats!
Can't wait to see your analysis! =D
On the off chance you do not know already, he made a rather nice country-flavoured (!) album a while ago together with Ché Aimee Dorval which is very much worth a listen. Also has nice, mellow tracks, and great vocal work (in my admittedly amateur opinion).
Causalities of Cool is a great record, for sure.
Che's solo stuff is incredible too.
@@SpaghettiWithMeatSauce her latest album, Blood Red Son, is co-written and produced by Bob Rock. It’s really good. I got my poster and signed lyrics from her crowdfunding campaign for the album. Liz should 100% check out her stuff. Perhaps her cover of SYL’s Almost Again from the Sad Songs quarantine recording.
I agree, Casualties of Cool is fantastic! It's the ghost of Johnny Cash playing out, full spirit, the vocals are purely superb!
This song, as well as Moonpeople makes me feel like this new album is going to be such a great way to heal. It’s beautiful.
Same!!
After a a very difficult time Im healing and Im just tired of violent and dense media. This music is great
You should check out Mountaintop or The Code from Casualties of Cool by Devin and Che Aimee Dorval. It's spaced out country. Very chill and relaxing.
I had this song on repeat for the last days leading up to the birth of my son. There was a lot of driving back and forth between home, work, and the hospital. Trying to stay calm and keep it together. This beautiful song gave me peace during a very stressful period.
If you like the lighter stuff then react to something off his album Ghost, preferably the title track. It’s the most beautiful song he’s ever done, imo 😊
When will you cover the death of music live @ RAH
From 'Heavy Devi' to 'Devin Heaven'.
If you check out ALL of Devin's discography.... this is no surprise.
Indeed
Devy has a large discography of albums. The soft side comes up on afew of his previous albums. Even having 1 album that id say is mostly chill. He is a true musical chameleon in how he can do all styles. The world should cherish devin.
A great, ethereal track from Devin... and yep, that's Anneke's dreamy backing vocals floating around back there, too... 🙂
God Jul on the chairs is Swedish for Merry Christmas. Maybe a Swedish train. Lovely song from Devin there. He has released other albums which are quiet, melodic and just beautiful. You really get all sorts with him. Love it!
I think it’s Norway.
If you look at the other signs, you can see they are in Norwegian. :) The phrase god jul is the same in both languages.
@@JP-qy6hw yep. I recognize those kinds of trains...
@@JP-qy6hw the video actually ends at Myrdal stasjon, end stop of the Flåm side line. It's also a part of the larger Bergen line. So definitely Norway/Norwegian.
@@needfortweed8734 Was going to say the video was very reminiscent of Bergensbanen - Minutt for minutt (a slow tv broadcast featuring a multicamera real-time trip on the Oslo-Bergen railroad).

I love watching your videos. And I would love to see your react to Japanese girl band Lovebites live in Tokyo 2020.
Heaven Devin
I think a lot of people were just introduced to the concept of slow TV, of which we Norwegians are masters. From trainrides, week long journey with a ship, burning log, knitting. It's just meditation, really.
I’ve already pre-ordered this album. I ran into Devin on a RUclips rabbit hole and immediately started buying all of his stuff. The singing, screaming, arrangement. Everything is just brilliant.
That’s awesome!👏👏👏
Let’s not forget Anneke in there. That angelic voice my goodness 😍
Oddly for me the feeling was not soothing or zen. It was one of affirmation and acknowedgement. Devin has been open about his own struggles with mental health, and as a fellow struggler this song hits HARD. Devvy is amazing writing lyrics that people might skip over, but are worth digging into. "collide into your interior-You doubted for so long it took control."
As a fan of Hevy Devy since the Vai days ('93), I'm never surprised by what he does. When you look back over his illustrious canon, they guy's done just about everything, extreme metal, prog metal, prog rock, pop, straight up rock, electro, ambient, music theatre, alt-country, jazz, orchestral............................
I appreciate that Devin made sure the windshield wipers are wiping at the same tempo as the music @13:50 Just another cherry I'm sure he added!
If you love soft Devy, you'll love his album Ghost. It's the most soothing, breathtaking, floaty album, and easily my favourite thing Devin's ever done. "Fly" and "Feather" from that album are especially good.
Yeah those are song great songs from a great album.
Feather hits...
Hey you need to whatch dimashs new video "the song of one sky" the most expensive music video in the world apparently. 😁😁😁
Elizabeth if you haven't seen it already...(think he was in New Zealand for this version) he did 'Bring Him Home' from Les Miserable. Absolutely stunning. Can't wait to see your reaction tomorrow!
If you want to "catch'em all" don't miss the one he did on the CBC. I was at that concert. It blew me away! the recording quality is superb.
@@digibirder wish I could have been there! Just watched Funeral from that show and was floored.
that was the gig where he does the "How do NewZealanders find their sheep in long grass?" joke.
To say the least Devin is my all time favorite singer and I'm pretty damn excited for this album
Musically this gives me a bit of "Spirits Will Collide" vibes - also a great sort of full, rich, sound from Devin (if that makes sense). :) A bit lighter, but definitely a similar vibe!
Aesthetically, I love the train ride through the Norwegian countryside, it's soothing in itself! ^^
I wouldn't necessarily say it's a new sound for him. His solo material has never really been tied down by style or genre. In fact, before Strapping Young Lad, he toured and recorded an album with Steve Vai. That could just as easily be considered a different sound.
You need to react to Norwegian Reggaeton by Nanowar of Steel. It is probably the best piece of music ever created
And the comment section explaining all the references would be hilarious!
That's AMAZING! Glad you said that
Devin always had this softer side to him, and it started to get out early in his career. Death of Music from the album Biomech, originally released under Ocean Machine moniker, is a perfect example of this, being 25 years old.
That high synth sound at the end reminds me of the train brakes squealing when it's stopping.
Was excited that this video is out already! And excited that Elizabeth is seeing this side of Devin. Hopefully she goes down this rabbit hole that will take her to things like Ghost, Ki, Casualties of Cool and so on. This song actually gives me Epicloud and Sky Blue vibes tbh. Can't wait for Lightwork to release fully!
This sounded so familiar to me for some reason and I couldn't figure it out until I realized Devin Townsend was the singer for Vai. Then it clicked. It totally sounds like one of their songs!
Devin and Railcowgirl were my go to channels during our various lockdowns, so this collaboration is so special to me. Also sweet that Railcowgirl shares her name with one of Devy's earlier songs...although spelled differently 😀
Looking forward to listening to your contribution. Thanks.
Humans love looking at nature and it has been proven that hanging out in forests is soothing to us.
Watching footage of nature from trains is a chance to see just so much beauty, in such a short period of time.
We didn't evolve to move as fast as we do with trains, humans are collectively mostly unchanged from our hunter gather ancestors 20,000+ years ago
I think people like watching footage from moving trains because it feels like magic to see so much nature when it would have taken weeks to walk the distances we can travel in hours.
Also, wheels go spinny. Clackity clack.
(The sound of the wheels is also very symmetrical and people *love* symmetry)
Trains may be calming because of their great momentum. They don't come to sudden stops or make sudden turns. They keep a regular rhythm which you can hear as the wheels pass over the tracks. It's hard to stop a train, and when a train stops it happens gradually. The same can be said for large flowing bodies of water.
The train videos are calming simply because everything is going exactly as it should be and you can see the clear path forward. It's a nice break from reality.
She asked for a research, not for what you think it is.
I really like your videos. I have learned a lot from them. I don't remember you reacting to Japanese female rock metal band Lovebites. They are amazing. Please react to holy war song.
Because of Japanese label concerns and copyrights, we generally steer clear from them. I'll do a little research though to see if Kirk has connections at their label, and if we can get things cleared first. Thank you for the suggestion!
You were close, even very close regarding that there must be something more than just one vocal there. Yes, I personally am 99.99% sure that in the background, as the second voice, Anneke van Giersbergen has been working with Davin for many years. Your dear, beautiful voice. I recommend The Gathering "Strange Machines" live '96
Hope to see both you and Aneke sing (on stage!) the new songs with him soon. I will need three eyes if I want to focus on Devin, cus' I ain't taking my eyes off of you ladies.
I got such Ghost vibes from this and I couldn't be happier. Always loved that album and another example of how Devin can do literally anything. Brilliant video as always 😊
A brilliant marketing move to give you access to this video ahead of time. Getting the video out to over 1 million subscribers works
really well!!!
I really hope he does another Casualties of Cool album and it's with you. Ché Aimee Dorvall was awesome on that album. Great voice.
I think the background vocals are Anneke van Giersbergen.
It's wonderful to see your reaction to just those few harmonies.
Anneke made a post saying there was a familiar voice on this song, so I assume so.
awesome, can't wait ;)
GGGarth Richardson follows in his father's (Jack Richardson, Nimbus 9 studios) footsteps as a recording engineer and awarding winning producer. GGGarth has worked with Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Taylor Swift among many others. GGGarth has a studio called the Farm located on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, Canada. It is a beautiful location. Devin and GGGarth have create something special with this new album if the rest of the songs are of the same caliber as "Call of the Void". 🎸🎤☀😎
Check out the Devin Townsend video for his song Genesis!!! Incredible song, and of course more octopus!!
Hi! I just now came across your reactions. Really like them!
May I suggest an interesting band? Amaranthe, they have three vocalists. Two clean (male / female) and a harsh vocalist (sadly he recently left the band). You'd be (I think) blown away by the harsh vocals in their song BOOM!1 (intentional spelling). It features mostly the two male singers with a vocal surprise from the female. Or maybe the song PvP where all three are featured. That's actually the theme song for Swedish e-sports team.
It would be awesome to hear your analysis of this band.
Keep up the great work! I'll surely tune in more times!
@The Charismatic Voice 'God jul' means Merry Christmas in Swedish, Norwegian and Danish. 'God' = good, 'jul' = Christmas.
From the recordings I think Devin was in Sweden, probably swinging by Morgan to say hi and build a snowman with him.
Nope, that's Norway
Nice to know.
Dear Elizabeth, React to Dimash's new compazition "Story of one sky" pls. This new song.😍🥰😍
So looking forward to the release of Lightwork. The first two singles (“Moonpeople” being the other) are absolutely fantastic. For those unaware, “Call of the Void” was originally released as a demo song back during Devin’s quarantine sessions in early 2020. The demo is really good but the new chorus and arrangement he did here takes it to a whole other level.

What a relaxing song and video. It was great!
I would love to see you react to LOVEBITES / Holy War [Live at Zepp DiverCity Tokyo 2020]. They are an all-female metal band from Japan and they are so good. Just discovered them myself a few weeks ago and I'm hooked.
YES!!! LOVEBITES!!! I just requested them as well on her Within Temptation analysis on Monday. Go find my comment and give it an up vote too. Two of a million will get her attention easier than one of a million!!! 😁
When his vocals first come in, he sounds a lot like David Gilmour of Pink Floyd.
Devin whole Ghost album is in this type of groove. The song Fly is great.
Suggestion! CrazyEightyEight - “Shinebox” (live one-take performance by Lauren Babic) voice of an angel, scream of a demon.
Is that Anneke van Giersbergen in the background vocal? This song reminds me of Sitting In the Mountain. ❤️
Really good video Elizabeth. I would love to watch reaction on Death vocalist - Chuck Schuldiner
You should do a reaction to "Shores in Flames" by Bathory. They do biking mythology and stuff like that
Please react to CHE AIMEE DORVAL
This should be a lovely analysis. Looking forward to it!
This whole album might just be Devin's best, it's got such a range of styles in it that it keeps it massively fresh. Dimensions is probably my favourite off the album though!
I did a google! God Jul is Norwegian for “Merry Christmas”.
You should do Motionless in White- Another Life. Great song and vocals. Maybe a two for one and do the Motion Picture Collection rendition of the song as well. They are both beautiful ❤❤
In 92 Devin teamed up with Steve Vai for the Sex and Religion album. You should check that out.
Hi I absolutely love your videos and I watch them to study for my final music exams. Not only do you analyze the vocals but also the instrumentalization within the music. I would appreciate it so much if you could analyze Bridge Over Troubled Water from lucifer season 6 episode 6.
Thank you.
Whee! I came to this channel for your wonderful reaction to Leprous' "Slave" (any chance of revisiting Einar's vocals one day?) but naturally stayed, if only for your pretty sidekick Krakino 🥰🐙
Waiting patiently for the new Lorna Shore track :>
Hi Elizabeth! My late friend and bassist Paul Delano, was friends with Devin and I love that you have become involved with your wonderful talent! This song is beautiful just as you are too.😽
Please, please, please!!! You HAVE to react to one of my favorite groups since high school (02'-05').... Coheed and Cambria! The lead singer Claudio Sanchez has a voice so unique, it's astounding. And please react to a specific song first called 'Mother Superior' in acoustic. I'm begging you to delve in the creative world of coheed. All of their songs are based on comics that they write called Amory Wars. It's so unique, and so amazing a world to tap into. The story telling is dark and mystical. The feeling and emotion of their music is sublime... I promise they will captivate you! Thank you 😁
(They are still putting out new music!)
You should check out Orbit Culture! They just released a new song Vultures of North, plenty of stuff for you to analyze and I think you would enjoy them!
lovely review!
if you haven't already I'd recommend listening to Devin's "Ghost" album, I'd say it's his most chill and meditative album, super soothing
Amazing song and amazing reaction!
I know everybody's asking about "The Death of Music (live at Royal Albert)" and it's a great suggestion, but I'd rather see you react to the fantastic "Canada Live Plovdiv (Blu-Ray)" or even "Deep Peace Live Plovdiv (Blu-Ray)" a song with one of his most beautiful guitar solos.
Now if you end going for "The Death of Music" you should definitely go for the full experience and do "Funeral/Bastard/The Death of Music" to enjoy it in all its 29 minute glory :)
Awesome video! Youre the absolutely best :D
I dont have to say what Lorna Shore just released... You probably are making the analysis right now of it, prepare tissues for it! You will gonna cry! :')
Elisabeth, Dimash's new song - the story of the sky - a masterpiece both vocally but also storywise, very powerfull!
Hello! Please, look new video, Dimash, is the story of one sky.
One of my favourites of all time is a family band called The Corrs. Many people focus on their looks while forgetting the musical talent they display. Here is an early hit called "Forgiven Not Forgotten". ruclips.net/video/Q4ILUXX4gZY/видео.html
Didn't one of them turn out to be a raving QAnon alt-right nutjob? Using the band's social media to spread anti-vaxx conspiracy theories...
Design your Universe (live Retrospect) / Unleashed (live Retrospect ), Cry for the Moon(live Retrospect) - Epica
Nightwish - 7 Days to the wolves (live) / Weak Fantasy (live)
I remember you - Skid Row (live)
Soulbound - Unleash the Archers
Take this Life - In Flames
Burning Time (live) / Dracula - Iced Earth
Reincarnate / Eternally Yours - Motionless In White

Devin is Genius!
That's so awesome that you contributed your vocals to this release, I'm so excited to hear the album and I'm sure he used y'alls vocals in an amazing way as he always does with vocal talent.
I am super excited to see what he's done. Kirk has been talking with Devin's management and they told him that the tracks I'm on are hauntingly good. So. . . I am just tickled with excitement!
@@TheCharismaticVoice that's so awesome!
Hey, can you please react to another Leprous song? Alleviate or Castaway Angels would be awesome! Einar's voice in both is just something out of this world!
I've never heard Devin before, but this is intriguing.
"Hold on to your butts"- Samuel L Jackson
Oh boi
And again an introduction to an artist I didn't know before your review. Thanx for doing songs in such a variety.
Hello Elizabeth, it is a pleasure to always enjoy your analysis, I would like you to analyze the song "This Road" by the band Oceans of Slumber here on RUclips there is a live version from the studio that is spectacular.
Really enjoyed this. Thanks so much for doing it. I just found this LP and bought the double album as well as a picture book that had a Blu-ray DVD of all the videos that go along with the LP. It's fantastic! I'm really, really enjoying it and I didn't know the artist at all before this and I'm not a huge metal fan so I'm not sure if I'm going to go back or not or just stay right here...😊
Honestly, he has had many mor atmospheric releases that are solid. But the reaction I’d love to see is covering him with Anneke Van Geirsbergen (spelling is likely way off). But The Gathering is a band worth visiting as is.. but him with her (Ih-Ah the best example) is just a masterpiece of vocals.
Compared to broken wings, I auditioning my sore throats voice at the grand and greatest hall, and even though this not my true calling, I wasn't prepared for the infinite fall.
So back to the beginning I grab my trusty ladder, and climb up to the bottom to crawl.
Please do a reaction and analysis of the astonishingly expressive singing of Steve Walsh of KANSAS. This progressive rock band is legendary and shows what a group of classically trained musicians (including a violinist) can do with rock music. Steve Walsh is not only an exceptional voice but also an extraordinary keyboardist. Both are immortalized in either one of these videos with great vocals and masterful compositions! You will be hooked! "On the Other Side" ruclips.net/video/bfSVRJg8BUk/видео.html and "Away From You" ruclips.net/video/SJPFfpiI4ZQ/видео.html
Also... "God Jul" is Norwegian for "Merry Yule" or "Merry Christmas". As the videos are recorded by RailCowGirl who lives in Norway, and you see winter-landscapes, that makes perfect sense. :)
Thank you for showing me this! Frankly I did not know about Devin Townsend.
This does sound great.
As an afterthought while hearing this, and please don't ask me why it sprang to my mind cuz I don't know, you may want to listen to Sarah Connolly at last night of the proms 2009.
I know its weird.
@Kirk
I hope you understand now.
Suggestion - Please review U2's Live Aid performance of Bad, I guarantee you will be moved by Bono's rendition
