The way you emotionally conntect with music is so beautiful to share with you, thanks so much for this channel it makes my life better. You are amazing. I hope your life is filled with love.
Because of your love for Devin Townsend, you should look into his oft-collaborator, Ché Aimee Dorval. Her voice is one the most beautiful on the planet.
"God Jul" is "Merry Chistmas" in Swedish and Norwegian, though. "Good trip" would be "God tur" in Norwegian. The other signs in the same scene are in Norwegian.
A fabulous piece of work. Layering like this is PURE CLASS. The mixing on this is state of the art. Never heard of him until 20 minutes ago, what a wonderful find. Musicianship and a fantastic ear for light and shade. I'd give a 10/10.
I had this song on repeat for the last days leading up to the birth of my son. There was a lot of driving back and forth between home, work, and the hospital. Trying to stay calm and keep it together. This beautiful song gave me peace during a very stressful period.
I've admired Devin and his work for many years - I have no problem with him delivering something radio-friendly with this single. His concerts, his tours and his ideas are usually very, very expensive. He should (and he must) earn the money he has always deserved.
Devin's been releasing radio friendly stuff for decades... The first Devin Townsend album ("Infinity") from 1998 is as full of tracks like this as it is with weird, experimental stuff like "Bad Devil" or "Noisy Pink Bubbles." "Addicted" is basically a radio hard rock album which he released in 2009 and is one of my favorites. "Ghost" from 2011 is an entire album of extremely mellow, soft rock. Ocean Machine has certain tracks on there which are as accessible as it gets (IE: "Regulator") for a hard rock band, and that was released back in 1997. If anything, he was getting far more success with his heavy metal band, Strapping Young Lad at the time he released "Infinity" and "Ocean Machine"... If he was doing it for financial reasons, those projects wouldn't have made sense, and breaking up SYL right as their popularity peaked back then would make even less sense. He did reform SYL a couple years after he broke it up initially... But he claimed that all the craziness in the wake of 9/11 and the start of the war on terror was his justification for reforming the band. I recall as I was lucky enough to see them live both before and after that hiatus... and they became a LOT more popular in the years after that hiatus until he disbanded them again to focus on The Devin Townsend Project for similar reasons as to why he broke up SYL in the first place. None of that sounds like a musician who has any need to make choices based on finances, it sounds like he is only at the mercy of his inspiration. He makes a good living as an independent artist; he has no record company debts to worry about or the cost of the overhead for belonging to such a large organization. He has more money than he really knows what to do with at this point, even when he spends a lot on production of his albums and his live show. Back in the late 90ies he was a lot closer to a starving artist, there were jokes about in the linear notes of the first two SYL albums, but nowadays he's pretty much the model for a successful independent artist. He really doesn't need to adjust his aesthetics to anyone.
@@rexlupis "at the mercy of his inspiration"! well said. I appreciate that he is able to go wherever his muse takes him. I love Addicted, start to finish.

Speaking of collaborating with Devin, you've yet to really feature long-time Devin friend and collaborator Anneke Van Giersbergen. Afaik you've only touched on her in passing one time. A grave oversight. She's an amazing singer with a unique style compared to other female metal vocalists, and a trailblazer who single-handedly popularized female-fronted metal. I love that you've featured Devin multiple times on your channel. With that being said, there is one performance that stands out amongst the treasure trove of his work. Please review the death of music at the Royal Albert concert hall. 🙏🙏🙏
Awesome that you added your voice to his new album. I just love the diversity of his music. The last tour featured a lot of metal, the next one will be very interesting with the more accessible vibe. I love it all.
Oh, really enjoyed this track, and wow that’s amazing that you contributed vocals to the new Devin album! Devin’s vocals here reminded me of Neige from Alcest. Their music combines wistful atmospheres with black metal, and Neige uses both clean and harsh vocals, definitely worth checking out.
Devin Townsend is like an angel that got sent down from heaven and told to figure out what it means to be a human. He’s got this way about him that tells you he knows how the universe works on a cosmic scale but his mission on this earth is to translate what he’s learned about human emotion through music.
This sounded so familiar to me for some reason and I couldn't figure it out until I realized Devin Townsend was the singer for Vai. Then it clicked. It totally sounds like one of their songs!
If you love soft Devy, you'll love his album Ghost. It's the most soothing, breathtaking, floaty album, and easily my favourite thing Devin's ever done. "Fly" and "Feather" from that album are especially good.
That's so awesome that you contributed your vocals to this release, I'm so excited to hear the album and I'm sure he used y'alls vocals in an amazing way as he always does with vocal talent.
I am super excited to see what he's done. Kirk has been talking with Devin's management and they told him that the tracks I'm on are hauntingly good. So. . . I am just tickled with excitement!
Been listening to Devin since 07, and I am so excited for this album to see what he's done over the years. Just his sound is always so full no matter the genre he does, and just having an easy listening album gets me so excited
@@TheCharismaticVoice Okay, totally off the subject here, but... Do you and Kirk have library cards? Does your local library participate in the One-thousand Books Before Kindergarten (1KBK) program? This is a library-sponsored program where parents read one-thousand books to/with their child before kindergarten. Just a question from an old librarian.
On the off chance you do not know already, he made a rather nice country-flavoured (!) album a while ago together with Ché Aimee Dorval which is very much worth a listen. Also has nice, mellow tracks, and great vocal work (in my admittedly amateur opinion).
@@SpaghettiWithMeatSauce her latest album, Blood Red Son, is co-written and produced by Bob Rock. It’s really good. I got my poster and signed lyrics from her crowdfunding campaign for the album. Liz should 100% check out her stuff. Perhaps her cover of SYL’s Almost Again from the Sad Songs quarantine recording.
I love the vids of Railwaycowgirl from the norwegian trains in winter too. They are perfect for studying or writing! I could easily imagine that Devin loved them for composing! :) Thank you for your reaction!! I'm very excited for his new album!
The train videos are calming simply because everything is going exactly as it should be and you can see the clear path forward. It's a nice break from reality.
I think the reason we find train cam so relaxing is because in our day to day life, as we move through the world, it feels like it passes through you or even sometimes collides against you. But on train cam, the world moves around you. Effortlessly, and safely.
I’ve never seen train videos before this, and I agree, it’s very soothing. My feeling is that the reason why is you feel are moving steadily forward into the future on an unchangeable path so there is structure that takes away uncertainty in direction, a bit like destiny, I suppose. In planes or cars, there is always the option to veer off, stop, go, turn or change your direction. With a train, there are no options. You are on these rails until you arrive at your destination. I dunno, that is just what came to me when you asked what was so appealing about that. I hope you like the interpretation and thanks for another wonderful Devy video. More, please!
This was so pretty and soothing. I'm a metalhead and brutal vocals and breakdowns are usually my thing but i loved this. ❤ You got to put backing vocals on some of the songs? That's awesome! Im going to be listening to see if i can pick out your voice.
Devin has a very special ability to just casually throw out epicness without even trying or even understanding what it is that makes it special, it's just something within that needs to emerge, and usually it's what people need to hear
Elizabeth if you haven't seen it already...(think he was in New Zealand for this version) he did 'Bring Him Home' from Les Miserable. Absolutely stunning. Can't wait to see your reaction tomorrow!
Devin is like a warm blanket, no matter the mental bullshit you are going through he has a soundscape to protect you! Man is a living legend! It annoys me every single person on the earth does not know him!
This is such a pretty song! I really like Devin's more relaxed stuff. It's so full, ethereal at times. The end of this song - the last few guitar notes with the clean tone - reminds me a lot of the theme tune to the 90s TV show, "Due South", which I absolutely love! And I'm almost certain that the octopus snippets were in there just for you ;-)! Thank you for the video!
Don't know why I just saw this, but glad you listened to this track! Devin said that he does a lot of his ambient and writing while watching POV train videos going from Oslo to the artic circle- that's where the train footage comes from.
You and Devin are so similar, music nerds to the core - and you let us into your fantastic world occationally. It's beautiful. ❤ Also, this awesome new Devin brings me some Pink Floyd vibes. Love, LOVE IT. Devin's voice is so unique though. ❤ Deadhead will always be my favourite, she says - anxiously awaiting new music from Dev. 😅
Devin always had this softer side to him, and it started to get out early in his career. Death of Music from the album Biomech, originally released under Ocean Machine moniker, is a perfect example of this, being 25 years old. That high synth sound at the end reminds me of the train brakes squealing when it's stopping.
I cannot wait I will be seeing Devin on the Lightwork tour next year, 5 days after seeing Bloodywood. So many great bands on tour next year, I cannot wait. This song shows The lighter side of Hevy Devy, such a beautiful song, it is this diversity that makes me love Devin and his music
Trains may be calming because of their great momentum. They don't come to sudden stops or make sudden turns. They keep a regular rhythm which you can hear as the wheels pass over the tracks. It's hard to stop a train, and when a train stops it happens gradually. The same can be said for large flowing bodies of water.
I love your videos, Elizabeth. I have learned so much through them. I was listening to The Agonist and Vicky's vocals absolutely blow my mind!! I have never heard such a versatile voice (Floor Jansen comes very close), but Vicky takes it to another level. She studied opera for two years prior to discovering her other vocal abilities. I would love to hear a vocal analysis for Vicky's work :)
I forgot how much I love your videos.. Glad Devin brought us together! Edit: I hear Anneke van Giersbergen in the BG Vox and you definitely need to check out Casualties of Cool! Ché Aimee Dorval from that group is also featured on these albums
GGGarth Richardson follows in his father's (Jack Richardson, Nimbus 9 studios) footsteps as a recording engineer and awarding winning producer. GGGarth has worked with Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Taylor Swift among many others. GGGarth has a studio called the Farm located on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, Canada. It is a beautiful location. Devin and GGGarth have create something special with this new album if the rest of the songs are of the same caliber as "Call of the Void". 🎸🎤☀😎
Devin is inspiration, in many of his hardest songs he has that emotional side that brings out your deepest sensibility, he is magical, unique and his personality reflects what he wants to show us in his albums.
Musically this gives me a bit of "Spirits Will Collide" vibes - also a great sort of full, rich, sound from Devin (if that makes sense). :) A bit lighter, but definitely a similar vibe! Aesthetically, I love the train ride through the Norwegian countryside, it's soothing in itself! ^^

awesome, can't wait ;)
I love this direction, like the latest Deafheaven, totally reminds me of Shelter or older Alcest. The drum/guitar interplay is just beautiful here.
Neige!!!! I love love love alcest. She definitely needs to listen to him
Devin Townsend is like an angel that got sent down from heaven and told to figure out what it means to be a human. He’s got this way about him that tells you he knows how the universe works on a cosmic scale but his mission on this earth is to translate what he’s learned about human emotion through music.
If you like soft Devy, you should listen to Ghost. It's a beautiful lullaby. Ki is also softer and jazzy.
This sounded so familiar to me for some reason and I couldn't figure it out until I realized Devin Townsend was the singer for Vai. Then it clicked. It totally sounds like one of their songs!
Devin Townsend is the only musician that can make my brain tingle in a way that crosses so many wires that I start to see and smell sounds.
At the outro: -This just feels floaty now!
The very next second: screen changed to waves… wow!
🖤❤️Devin❤️🖤
Devin floats my boat.
Check out the Devin Townsend video for his song Genesis!!! Incredible song, and of course more octopus!!
If you love soft Devy, you'll love his album Ghost. It's the most soothing, breathtaking, floaty album, and easily my favourite thing Devin's ever done. "Fly" and "Feather" from that album are especially good.
Yeah those are song great songs from a great album.
Feather hits...
@@TheCharismaticVoice that's so awesome!
Been listening to Devin since 07, and I am so excited for this album to see what he's done over the years. Just his sound is always so full no matter the genre he does, and just having an easy listening album gets me so excited
Given that his voice has a little more levity in this, I might describe it as Levy-Devy!
Oh my goodness Jay, that is absolutely brilliant!!! I love it. Levy-Devy!
@@TheCharismaticVoice you have a handful of Devin videos. A Devy-Bevy?
On the off chance you do not know already, he made a rather nice country-flavoured (!) album a while ago together with Ché Aimee Dorval which is very much worth a listen. Also has nice, mellow tracks, and great vocal work (in my admittedly amateur opinion).
Causalities of Cool is a great record, for sure.
Che's solo stuff is incredible too.
I agree, Casualties of Cool is fantastic! It's the ghost of Johnny Cash playing out, full spirit, the vocals are purely superb!
She asked for a research, not for what you think it is.
It was great watching your excitement and reactions, funny too.
I think the reason we find train cam so relaxing is because in our day to day life, as we move through the world, it feels like it passes through you or even sometimes collides against you. But on train cam, the world moves around you. Effortlessly, and safely.
Norway has been brought up a few times and that line on the headrest means Merry Christmas.
More, please!
this sounds magical for sure!
This new album will be amazing, as all his work is. he's such a beautiful Soul💗
Devin is Genius!
Just discovered Devin! This was the song and album that introduced his creativity to me. WOW!
This was so pretty and soothing. I'm a metalhead and brutal vocals and breakdowns are usually my thing but i loved this. ❤
You got to put backing vocals on some of the songs? That's awesome! Im going to be listening to see if i can pick out your voice.
I worked on this! So fun, so inspiring! Thanks for reviewing
Damn i JUST finished watching the video because a friend of mine sent it. Such good song, Devin is so talented.
Elizabeth, you have beautifully expressive eyes, um, i mean your content and breakdown keep me comming back. excellent work, very enjoyable.
If you want to "catch'em all" don't miss the one he did on the CBC. I was at that concert. It blew me away! the recording quality is superb.
@@digibirder wish I could have been there! Just watched Funeral from that show and was floored.
that was the gig where he does the "How do NewZealanders find their sheep in long grass?" joke.
What a beautiful song.
This video seems it was tailored for you with the cuppa tea and the octopi.
what is written on the chairs on the train - Jod Jul - is apparently 'Merry Christmas' in Norwegian.
I adore his work. It's amazing.
Also, this awesome new Devin brings me some Pink Floyd vibes.
Definitely feeling that The Edge-style guitar sound in the intro to the song. 🙌
I love it. One of my siblings introduced me to Devin Townsend's music. Always good stuff. 💚
I love watching your videos. And I would love to see your react to Japanese girl band Lovebites live in Tokyo 2020.
If you check out ALL of Devin's discography.... this is no surprise.
Indeed
Trains may be calming because of their great momentum. They don't come to sudden stops or make sudden turns. They keep a regular rhythm which you can hear as the wheels pass over the tracks. It's hard to stop a train, and when a train stops it happens gradually. The same can be said for large flowing bodies of water.
Anneke Van Giersbergen was here.
That signature is everywhere she sings... It's so easy to recognize! That smiley, soft, soothing voice of hers.
I've never heard Devin before, but this is intriguing.
"Hold on to your butts"- Samuel L Jackson
Oh boi
Devin Townsend rocks, what an amazing guy :), btw can we get another video from that other DT (dream theater) prog group :P
