I was planning on playing other factions, like the Shadow Dragon but the “adopted by a military family killed it for me”. Then I saw Mournwatch and like…Whaaaaat that backstory is cool as fuck. The only downside is I kinda hate the “aspirational armour” compared to the other factions. AH!
Backgrounds sounds cool, especially the Mourn Watch one but I do wish all the backgrounds weren’t just the same as each respective new party member. In Inquisition, you were the only Dalish representation cause Sera and Solas were weirdos and even as a fellow Qunari, you were a Tal Vashoth to Bull’s acting member of the Ben Hassrath.
Yeah. When i heard the backgrounds, i immediately checked and they're the same except for harding. Maybe they want rook to have a standing in one of the factions from the get go, not like a complete unknown which i prefer
in dai a player character qunari is a Vashoth, someone born outside the qun. Tal vashoth are qunari that rebel against the qun, some qunari in the qun lump them together though. if i remember correctly theres even some unique dialog about it if you're a qunari and bull becomes a tal vashoth
The game has an emphasis on building reputation with each faction. It also gives us grounding/a defined history in the game. it affects dialog choices as well. It wouldnt make any sense to be the one and only dalish or any "unique" faction. I love Inquisition, but rarely did the player's background seem to matter. And this time around, it does look like it matters.
@@inkygreen they’re half-doing the origins from DAO. The difference is that if you’re a dwarf noble in DAO, when you go back to orzammar u had history with bhelen and the society etc. in the veilguard people of that certain faction know you, but you don’t know them

Me too. It works for some of them, but not all. The Shadow Dragon Rook is adopted into a family and the Antivan Crows Rook is part of the de Riva House. But the Grey Warden has to be Thorne? I mean it's a cool name, but it's a very human name.
@@krasmasov6852 I mean kinda but Qunari don't have last names, Elves take their surnames from somewhere else usually clan, Thorne sounds very Dwarven as well. There also could be more background to your last name depending on your race.
I wonder how different playing as a Warden will be, compared to the other factions. Since there's a lot of blight involved, blight has "changed" and we also can't forget that Solas always vocally disliked wardens. I hope this is all reflected in a warden Rook playthrough.
The only difference there will be is Warden Rook will get the option to choose Warden-specific answers in dialogue when they talk about the blight or the Wardens themselves in the story.
Which group do they not fit in aside from Veil Jumpers? Qunari and dwarf is a little weird for Mournwatch but the origin is "baby found in crypt" so it kind of does
Now I'm doubley confused as to why these backstories aren't playable. It's clear more thought and care went into them than the Inquisitor's backstory, with a common theme of going against our faction's leaders and being forced to leave. I just greatly want to see origins make a comeback, as it was easily the best part of Origins. This seems so close, and yet still so far
Yeah, it would be nice. But as Bioware said many years ago, most players of DAO didn't even finish the game once, and almost no one did more than one origin story. So the vast majority of players not only didn't see all the game, they only saw one origin and therefore all the work on different origins and how they played out later in the game was, from a purely practical perspective, a waste of development time and money. And it would be a better use of both to make stuff all players will see. Sad but true.

this video helped me to ground and flesh out some of my rook ideas, thank u so far I have a lord of fortune kinda a indiana jones type and a witcher-ish grey warden
It is so refreshing to find a video and players that show excitement towards this game as opposed to all the negativity in so many other Veilguard videos.
As ever, I love your stuff, and I am really grateful to have the warning about seeing the CC, or similar warnings you've given before. For me, I am deciding to be that ridiculous about spoilering hehehe but I imagine that's a small percentage of folk.
Surnames were a concern for me since they were going to be faction locked and not lineage. Four of the surnames are all very ambiguous and definitely work well for any lineage. On that note, de Riva gets a pass from me because of Lore. So that’s five. Unfortunately, Thorne I feel is still a bit too Human leaning.
Thorne fits for humans and dwarves. Qunari don't have last names so they might explain how they get it and elves usually take their surnames from something around them like their clan so we might get an explanation.
The more I hear about the Lords of Fortune the more excited I am for my chaos gremlin rogue to finally have her spotlight....and be the bane of her professional, socially awkward, possibly possessed future husband.
Thank you for this video, after watching it I'm more convinced to become an Antivan Crow. Throughout the franchise all my main characters have been Male Human Rogues and taking the Assassin specialization, so they have all been Assassins "To work in the Dark to serve the Light", so Rook will be joining them as another Male Human Rogue and as an Antiva Crow after watching this video. I'm Latino, so I'll be using my first name that goes very well with "De Riva" an Assassin.
I kinda love that they all boil down to “your PC did something rashly heroic that succeeded with some blowback, so you gotta go on down Mexico way until the heat dies down.”
I've always played as an Elven mage in every DA games, (also mage in DA 2 as human ofc), because i just liked being the guy being oppressed and just trying to survive. In Veilguard i'll choose the Grey Warden background since they're pretty much lost in the sauce after the Inquisition events. Curious how it will turn out !
Shadow dragon ...possibly Qunari if I'll be able to create my character to look as I want :D (basically my RPG character as a qunari AU :D ) It sounds fun as a Qunari tbh! :D
My first playthrough will probably be a qunari mage grey warden. Second playthrough a human Rogue (or another mage if i like the mage combat) in the Mournwatch. Oòoh character are fighting for head space in my head.. can’t wait for oct 31st! My most favored backgrounds 1 Grey Wardens, 2 The Mornwatch 3 the Antivan Crows 4 the Shadow Dragons 5 Lords of fortune 6 The veil jumpers
chosing faction in this game is honestly one of the hardest things so many amazing choices and each faction so interesting for different reasons it's tortureeeeeeee 💜
Hmm so the choices that we'll make at the beginning of the game only regard Inquisition...(refering to the little blurb on the right of the character that appears at the beginning of the video) If that's true that's...a little disappointing to not have decisions from Orgins and 2 matter :/

I wish it was more clear which backgrounds allow you to be dalish or not, or if all of them do. I don't want to play a non dalish with Vallaslin, though I guess the mirror in the lighthouse solves that issue.
According to Epler, "each lineage can be each faction" which "will provide a baseline for your character you can further refine through role player" and that "Veil Jumper elves tend to be more 'Dalish' to reflect that background" but you apparently "build your character's background and beliefs through in-game RP". So there hasn't been any definitive statement, they remain annoyingly vague to the simple question of whether or not you can role-play as a City Elf (partly because, based on other statements, they seemingly do not understand why a City Elf would have a different perspective than a Dalish one).
@@JoelBurger Yes, this is where my annoyance with their Q&A sessions have been too, a lot of vague halfway answers that doesn't really satisfy to resolve the questions posed.

For my canon Dragon age MCs it’s been female dwarf rogue, male human warrior and female elven mage. Given that logic I was going to wait & see how a male Qunari Grey Warden/Antivan Crow Rogue would look like, but given their foreheads I might go elf or human mourn watcher rogue.
I hope a grey warden mage is an option. I really liked Clarel from Inquisition. After what a certain magister did to her I wanted to see her be the one to deliver the payback to him. Sadly she didn't get the chance. Even though she's irrelevant to this game, I'd sure like to fight the blight in her name.

Dragon age 2 is literally a fixed character, with a fixed past. just because you wrote your little fanfic in your head on how it goes went not mean thats how it was represented in game.
Clicked so MFN fast!
A Tevinter family adopting a Qunari into the family as an origin? That's so sick!
Let's hope the backgrounds will be explored and not just ignored constantly like in inquisition
Thank you for giving the background choices, this is awsome!
Thank you for this. Really helped, now to decide what class to play lol
I was already gonna pick Mourn Watch, but now I'm even more excited.
this video helped me to ground and flesh out some of my rook ideas, thank u
so far I have a lord of fortune kinda a indiana jones type
and a witcher-ish grey warden
It is so refreshing to find a video and players that show excitement towards this game as opposed to all the negativity in so many other Veilguard videos.
Comment for the algorithm
And thank you for the spoiler warning 🙏
Thank you for this , I’m leaning more and more to the Lords of Fortune , edging out Shadow Dragons in my first play through
Your qunari looks great. 👌 refreshing to see another take on them
Excited for this!! Also did also got a good look on the world state customization.
As ever, I love your stuff, and I am really grateful to have the warning about seeing the CC, or similar warnings you've given before. For me, I am deciding to be that ridiculous about spoilering hehehe but I imagine that's a small percentage of folk.
Thank you so much for this! 💜
Agree on Thorne. I guess you could roleplay as a non-human that was adopted by human parents? But I suppose thats a bit limiting
Thorne fits for humans and dwarves. Qunari don't have last names so they might explain how they get it and elves usually take their surnames from something around them like their clan so we might get an explanation.
just seeing a bit of the CC I am so happy lol I hated Inquisitions CC so much, and this looks like such an improvement overall.
The more I hear about the Lords of Fortune the more excited I am for my chaos gremlin rogue to finally have her spotlight....and be the bane of her professional, socially awkward, possibly possessed future husband.
So you have the same suspicion about Lucanis as I do.
Thank you so much for this! I finally have my starting character figured out ❤
Wasn't originally considering Mourn watch, but that backstory is too cool not to choose.
Same it sounds so metal!
This was really helpful. Thanks. I thought I knew what I wanted but now I'm stuck between 3.
I feel like guessing... Mourn watch, grey wardens, and veil jumpers
Love the Afro texture, my first Rook will sport one of those hairstyles for sure
Thank you for sharing! It’s gonna be so hard to pick a faction!
I kinda love that they all boil down to “your PC did something rashly heroic that succeeded with some blowback, so you gotta go on down Mexico way until the heat dies down.”
kinda not a fan of them making us the hero by default, wish they add "or not" and give us negative karma or something.
Oh grey warden, what have you done
The oath you have taken is all but broken
a shame we cant go full evil like a venatori background
Of course you cant why would you be recruited? You can go renegade "get the job done by any means necessary" background though.
I was so interested when Cassandra talked about the Mortalitasi so I’m definitely picking that background first
I think the ooooonly small thing I don’t love is the surname being the same across races.
There might be a explanation for the 3 questionable ones.
Lords of Fortune, chaotic good. I think I've found my faction.
Thank you for showing the casual wear!
My most favored backgrounds
1 Grey Wardens,
2 The Mornwatch
3 the Antivan Crows
4 the Shadow Dragons
5 Lords of fortune
6 The veil jumpers
chosing faction in this game is honestly one of the hardest things so many amazing choices and each faction so interesting for different reasons it's tortureeeeeeee 💜
Yea hearing the actual backgrounds completely ruined my plans lol
Hmm so the choices that we'll make at the beginning of the game only regard Inquisition...(refering to the little blurb on the right of the character that appears at the beginning of the video)
If that's true that's...a little disappointing to not have decisions from Orgins and 2 matter :/
what choices from those games would still be relevant? its been 10 years since inquisition in and out of game, thats like 20 years since origins.
@@MammothMorals Updates on who we chose as king of Ferelden? Also means no chance to potentially see Fenris again since he couldve died or sold to a magister in DA2
@@shard4756 considering the game doesn't take place in ferelden its unlikely we'll see them anyway and inquisition showed that anyway.
Leliana could die in origins but they still brought her back in inquisition. they could do the same with fenris, it's been long enough in game for them not to need to explain it.
@@MammothMorals im not expecting to see them. But seeing as how they dont ask about origins choices means they probably wont even refrence who is king in codexs or dialogue. They could force a canon on certain characters fates, but that pissed off a lot of ppl in Inquisition
@@shard4756 Leliana being alive wasn't a forced cannon. if shes harded and doesn't become divine at the end of inquisition, she has a unique ending were she disappears into a flock of crows suggesting that she's alive due to magical means.
this is insane actually, cant wait for the game T_T
Wasn't expecting to be as interested in the Lords of Fortune as I am. I think I just heard it before as some sort of mercenary/thieves guild, but tbh I am so intrigued by Rivain since we've only ever vaguely heard about it as some exotic place, even within Thedas. Can't wait to make a Rivaini Rook!
Those backstorys are giving serious Comander Sheppard vibes
loving the Crows even more. but the lords of fortune gear is awesome.
I wish it was more clear which backgrounds allow you to be dalish or not, or if all of them do. I don't want to play a non dalish with Vallaslin, though I guess the mirror in the lighthouse solves that issue.
i think you're dallish no matter what.
@@MammothMorals Ah, so no non-dalish elfing then, I see. Thanks for the heads-up.
All the backgrounds sound really awesome, glad they have Grey Wardens available so my Orzammarian Dwarf won't be too much of a stretch
Ok this is what I needed to decide on my rook! Definitely going to be a qunari mourn watcher mage! 😍😍
Ooh that's a dope head cannon
I have no idea who my rook is gonna be...
I am now debating on Shadow Dragons, Mourn Watch and the Antivan Crows...
Thanks for the video! I'm very excited about the backgrounds. Still not sure which one i'll choose
THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! The surnames were all I was waiting on to finalize my character names. Thankfully my chosen first names fit nicely with their respective last names. You just made my day. Hope yours has been and continues to be great. 🤡🤡🤡
I think first names are randomly generated? Maybe I'm wrong but just don't get too hy9ed about ur first name in case u can't have it
This is exactly what I was hoping for ❤ Hell yeah!
Let's go Shadow Dragons!!! 💜 🐉
Ill be playing a human shadow dragon mage for my first run. I am SO excited
The Dragon Age franchises have always been pretty progressive for their time in every entry.
gosh you and Kala sound so much alike. and im all for it . looking forward to much more DATV content
It is as long as your not a dwarf.
The video quality is amazing ❤ You’ve upped your game
like my origin greywarden, my veilguard one will be human, a warrior, sepcs will be champion and of course gray warden, we are the defender of light agsint the Blight, your shields stay strong our sword unbroken
I'm more excited about this every day.
I think from an in universe perspective, shadow dragons is the only group that makes sense. Inquisition literally said they would be going to tevinter to find more people after they disbanded
all the other faction rooks are explained to be travelling in the backstory. likely traveling and found by Varric in Tevinter
Gonna go for a Qunari warrior Reaper Mourn watch! Stealing life essence with a SCYTHE to fight harder while also being a part of a Necromantic order sounds absolutely bananas.
Im so excited to enjoy seeing thedas again!
Great video thanks!
I'm leaning toward Shadow Dragons.
Dang you got 20k views on this Girl!! You've come a long way ❤️❤️❤️
