You know i love your vids and that canteen is cool. im not sure i like the shape, but that is just me. Tho i have the old plastic i litre canteen and i have the screw on top freeze on me alot. so that was smart of them and enjoy the new design, cool item
Always enjoy your videos. I really like how you make due with what you have, very resourceful and determined. Can't wait to see your next video where you hit the trail and use the canteen. All the best to you.
Thanks Robin, will check it out...Glad to see you are have hobbys tinkering. Get a highspeed rotory air cutting tool with thin cutting heads. It would slice through that stainless quite fast and easy. Perhaps try that. The roto zips are a good tool to.
goodluck and im sure it will be great. I think we all try to acquire military gear because they are usually the best and tested hard core. For they have to be for the troops, so should be great, not sure why they made it round tho lol. im going out this weekend camping again.Tho going very modern for me , using a tent tho a summer tent lol.
What a great review Robin, I've never tried one of these types of canteens and cups set up yet, but I've wanted to order one for a while now! great job on the lid! it's nice when you can make your own gear! great video Robin! Take Care
That's great work, Robin. :) If that large handle proves to be a problem, I guess you could always swap it out for something smaller or maybe foldable. Another project for you to contemplate. :) Cheers,
Hi Robin, Thanks for the fun video. That was pretty impressive that you were able to cut out that stainless with just a hacksaw. It must have been a nice little workout. The lid looks great though. That style cup looks a little more open and lower profile that the regular military cup. Since it now has a spiffy new lid, I would be tempted to bring it along for warmer weather jaunts too. Thanks again and I hope that you have a wonderful week.. : o)
I have one of these canteens, but I have never seen the cup or the carrier. May I ask where you purchased it? Very good job on the video, it is always a joy when one of your videos pops up.
Hey thanks! ...i love hands on projects ...I got my kit at my favorite army surplus in Chicago ..but i also put a link to it in the description of the video ...
Thanks so much ....I'll admit i only wash it out at home in soapy water but I never use it to collect dirty water on the trail ...hopefully that will be good enough, so far so good :)
great review. you definitely put a lot of work in making the lid it shows it looks great. I have a question for you what do you use to sanitize your canteen?
that turned out great. !! :) instead of going arond the outside could you fit to the inside? I am thinking a 1/4 or 3/8 pice of wood slightly smaller than the opening. Center the wood on the metal lid, drill some holes and attach with some metal screws thru the lid to the wood and then grind flat. some silicone sealant around the edge would make it almost water tight. just thinking outloud. I like to tinker :) This will work as it is.
LOL well you have a good point in that! LOL... a hacksaw thumbs up Robin. I have a bad shoulder thats my problem. But if I had to I would use a hacksaw for sure... Good job!!!!
I'm with you completely on different power tools. but my goal wasn't to go out and buy them but to use the most common inexpensive tools anyone might have on hand. TRUST me it would have been easier with a Dremel tool LOL.....thanks for watching!
I read where you could boil water in it no problem but i wondered if it took longer because of being double walled? ....Thanks as always for checking out my videos :)
loved the review! that canteen is great!! especially if it has a really long strap, cuz that way you can swing it over your head if bigfoot is coming at ya hitting him in the head giving you time to run the hell outta there!
Robin, great video! It will be interesting to see that arctic canteen put to use. Any thoughts on possibly heating water in the canteen? Be safe out there on the trail, my friend.
My hats off to you Robin, good ole american inventive spirit! making that cool lid!!! Very neat!! How much did the canteen cost if I may ask? BTW I bought the ziplock vacuum bags at my local Meijer store the dbl pack! Thank you for the tip! It wasn't online at the Meijer website but was at the store! Take care Robin.
Hello Robin, nice video review of the Arctic Canteen and good job on the Lid,if the handle is to tall can you take it off most of the time there not on there that strong, maybe grind the little welds off and make your own?,have a great week,Donald
I clamped it into the bench vise and bent it over then beat it with a hammer...it was the boring part as you have to take your time. I agree about the handle though , ill check your vid out for sure!..thanks :)
Job Well done Robin! You mention 1984 mfg date, I have exactly the same model & year as yours. Great canteens. I think you mention something about boiling H2O in the canteen, I personalty would not recommend doing that. Being an aluminum body & plastic lid & a vacuum layer, it will melt in a hot fire, like a beer/soda can does. If it does not melt in the process your would wast a lot fuel just bring the H2O to boiling. Better use would be to boil the water in the cup. Just saying
nice video, i hope you read this comment, as a metal fabricator, just a tip, stainless steel, has the possibility, to shatter your grinder rock, best thing to use is 4inch right angle grinder with 50 grit rubber backed sanding disk, i prefer makita grinder can be pricey tho, just wanted to give you heads up
OK ... *I'm* impressed ... If you are "that good" at metal fab, perhaps you can ditch that high handle and use some of the refuse scrap, from the lid, to make a "strap" handle ... All you would need to do (besides cutting it out) would be to drill an appropriate set of holes and get some bolts from Home Depot or a rivet kit from harbor freight ... Still not much money. ... Looks great !
Yeah i'm hoping for some really cold weather to test the canteen out. I figured if it was that cold it might take forever to cook anything so i kinda need a lid. The hack saw made it through but the blade was trashed by the time i was done believe me LOL ...one way or another I have to try this out after all this work too! :)
I have my favorite army surplus in Chicago...but there is a amazon link in the description of this video as well....you could click it and search just the items you are looking for...thanks so much for watching :)
gosh yes ....but the point of my video was to do it with as common of tools as i can get away with. Not many people have dremel tools but it SURE would have helped :)
I am impressed Robin, you did a really good job on that lid :-)) Cutting that out with just a hacksaw was no easy feat :-} trust me...I know ;-)) I would have liked to see how you bent the lip over tho ;-)) If you ever want to ditch that handle I show how to make a really simple one using a "D" ring and a strip of metal in one of my videos ;-)) Thanks for sharing this and Take Care my friend :-))
I found it at my favorite army surplus in Chicago but I included a link in the description of th video if you want to just find one online too ....thanks for watching !
Excellent review Robin, thanks for the video. I've been looking for an insulated winter canteen now thanks to you I think I've found the perfect canteen.
Oh it was that clamp on bench vise working loose. It has a couple holes to screw it down, which might have been better. I try to keep the video and tools to what ever some average guy might have. I agree bout the size of the lid but if worse come to worse I'll just throw it in my bag somewhere for now.
Hi Robin,I always enjoy your outdoor videos and product reviews.Keep up the great work,I appeciate the time and effort it takes, Thanks !
Excellent ingenuity and design Robin, a GREAT DIY project!
