Actually, it isn't a rubber liner. The canteen is double walled with a vacuum between the two walls, like a thermos. The rubber piece just goes into the neck to retain the stopper. He didn't show it, but you can pull the short rubber piece out by simply twisting and pulling.
Living in Maine, I have been hiking/bushcraphting in the teens and single digits for weeks. IMy canteen kit consists of a Kleen Kanteen 40 oz.,an 18 oz GSI and Pathfinder Stove Ring pack in a Maxpedition 10'x4' hydration sleeve with a 6"x5" exterior pocket which I stow my drink kit. This canteen kit has been in single digit weather for 14 plus hours without freezing. I have rocked alot of canteen kits and this kit beats them all! Some times you really do get what you pay for. Approx. cost = $100
I feel like an ass , I've seen these before and passed them up so often sticking to the old standard , I didn't know it had a rubber liner , lucky me I have two army navy surplus stores in walking distance , this is one reason you and what you do is so important to so many , you give us what we miss , the info to revisit and take another look so we can make better decisions in gear and skill practice . THANK YOU DAVE !!!
I have been having a hard time finding local surplus stores , many have went out of buisness around my area . Now that I have started looking more online for goods I worry about not just getting good items but good customer service . anytime you get good deals and service on items you use Dave I would always be glad to hear about them , like a Pathfinder approved vendor list . I know some dont like hearing about gear but I always like the honest and trusted reviews you give ! Thanks Dave !!!
Dave ,thanks for the product info,it matters not that you sell things on your site , sharing the info & teaching is the key focus , keep up the great work !
The cool thing about military surplus is that it has been keeping us in the military alive for longer than the hipsters working at REI have been alive. I know that a lot of the surplus stuff is not the absolute best quality, but it gets the job done at a price that the common man can afford. Thanks for the post Dave.
I hope that one is an improved model from the one I was issued while in the National Guard we had rusting issues with ours (if they were not perfectly dried after use) we soon went back to the plastic ones also --if the water does freeze inside it takes a long time to thaw! the cup , however was excellent for all reasons you mentioned and the cover was well designed. love your videos -- keep up the good work!
I picked up two of these at the sportsmans guide a couple years ago for 20 bucks plus shipping for the both of them they are verry good canteens and they keep water cool in summer also!
I went out and bought one as soon as I saw this video. IT IS THE BOMB! Talk about usable! It weighs less filled and is kinder on your body when carried. You can reheat your water and pour it back in to KEEP it above freezing, too. This is just such a great design that I'm GLAD that Dave found one to talk about here.
These canteens are not lined with rubber on the inside of the main body, the rubber is just at the mouth piece and inside the neck. The body has double walled stainless steel to insulate it.
I agree with MaybeMistaken. I love all your product reviews Dave because I can't find anyone else who's opinions I respect and trust more than yours. I think most of us love to see the new products you're selling and have the opportunity to support your cause. You're a man of integrity, don't ever change.
Dave you're a good man, I regretabily used to be one of the a-holes who would give you crap about selling things on your channel (back in the sling bow days). Now I've learned better and truly respect you, who you are and what you do. My entire family (extended included) follows your channel and has learned amazing things from you. Please sir, dont let, who I was, and the people who are giving you trouble over selling things, another thought. You've given 100 times more than you'll ever take!
Another awesome, awesome video. I just wanted to put out that the water in that canteen will, in fact, freeze. Its just gonna take longer. I live in Canada and own this exact canteen and I've had it freeze on me. That being said, I was testing the product so I left it outside on my porch overnight and it got to about -30 or -35 celsius. All in all this it is a great product and I would highly recommend it. Love the videos Dave, keep 'em coming brutha.
@elpadrino1024 They are a double-wall insulated vessel, like a thermos, you won't heat anything in them over a fire, you heat/boil water in the cup and then pour it into the canteen.
Thank you dave. I already saw her but i dont knew that this canteen is a arctic canteen! Im from germany and this canteen is very expensive here because she is rare like hell...
Excellent and education video as always. Do you know if any of the chemical water treatments (iodine, chlorine, etc) lower the freezing point of water? I know that a pinch of salt in your water will lower the freezing point, but this may not be a resource that you carry always.
DAVE I’V HAD ONE OF THESE FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS AND HAVE USED IT ON MANY HUNTING TRIPS. IT HAS BEEN IT MY PACK FOR 8 HOURS IN WEATHER DOWN TO 20 DEGREES AND HAS NEVER FROZEN. IT'S A GOOD SOLID PIECE OF EQUIPMENT.
Whats up,Dave? First time commenter, long time viewer. I see Ohio finally got some snow. Please do not let negative commends change what has worked so well for you, keep doing what your passionate about! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything that you and your whole family has done for our community! Thank you for your unselfish giving of not only your knowledge but passion as well. Thank you for not only being my teacher but my fellow student as well! God bless from Maine!!!
Dave, it is a nice canteen, I've been hooked on the MOLLE plastic 1qt for many a year, very similar, except it has the stove and lid too, that all fits in the canteen cover as well. In the time that I've used it, I haven't had any freeze issues either. If you've used your new one, have you noticed any rubber tastes in the water.
I carry a 3ltr bladder inside my Rocket Pack backpack. Last weekend I slept out in -8 with a friend of mine who wanted to try out some new kit he had. I found that the water inside the backpack was fine BUT the drinking tube that passes outside was totally frozen inside. So I had water but the normal means of access was blocked! I got round it by opening up the large filler cap inside the backpack and pouring some out that way. So this Arctic canteen is not such a bad idea Dave, thanks.
@wildernessoutfitters We were issued those canteens when i was stationed in Alaska the other reason for the rubber stopper type opening is to allow for expansion if the water does freeze. it acts like a freeze plug on your car engine water expands as it freezes so it has to have somewhere to go thus the plug type cap that is easily pushed out when the water expands and freezes. the lining will let the water freeze at a slower rate but it will eeventually freeze if left out too long.
Another awesome review Dave, and another item on my shopping list that the wife will roll her eyes about when I tell her I NEED this canteen...keep up the good work and God bless.
If I'm not mistaken, the liner in the canteen is insulation, so it only slows freezing, It doesn't totally prevent it. which is probably another reason the canteen cap is just a plug. It can press out if the canteen does start to freeze, instead of the whole thing tearing apart. Another good trick is to turn Ur bottle upside down. Nothing is more frustrating than having half a bottle of good water, with a thick layer of ice over it.
I've been looking at these for a while but after seeing this review I finally pulled the trigger. I for one like your reviews Dave. I've never felt that you were ever hard selling stuff from your web site. Bottom line what you think might be useful in an emergency or wilderness situation is of interest to me. Thanks for all you do. Paul V.
Hi Dave. The only propbem I can see with this bottle would be the rubber linning on it. I know youre gonna boil in the cup, but I would think of boiling water in the bottle AND the cup on one fire if I need the water fast. Then I would thing about some kind of outside layer for preventing it before freezing. Just my way Im going through sigma part:) Thank you and have a nice time when making other videos:)
These are really good canteens but are prone to freeze in the neck area in extreme cold. I was issued this canteen while serving in the Army in Alaska. We would avoid the freezing problem by tying the canteen to paracord and hanging it from our necks under our outer garments.
so all in all mate, i just wanted to say a big thanks from Australia for all your shows and all your really useful information. to people like me, where this information is no were near as easily available ( next to no bush craft skills live on in Queensland ) so im having to learn a lot from scratch. but i follow your advice as if it were the bible mate!
Amazon has the canteen ($10) and cover ($5) for sale, just search US Arctic Canteen. They didn't have the canteen cup though. There are some on ebay for around $30 for canteen, cup, and cover all together. It might be difficult to find US military surplus in Canada, but the internet is you friend.
I liked this review for the simple fact that it reminded me that something simple that we take for granted, water, can become unavailable even if we pack it in. Winter presents the greatest survival challenges in North America. Quite frankly, its the only time I'd get worried about survival. Since water is the #1 necessity, this video is a good reminder that we need to be careful with how we handle it in the cold. Also, good to see snow finally came to Ohio.
When purchasing one on these canteens check the date of manufacturing. The one Dave has was dated 1984. I served in a NATO op in Norway and also traned in Alaska both above the Arctic circle in 1978 &79. We carried these carteen and they were crap. These early models did not have a rudder bladder and were very fragile. After a week of being out in the field there was not one left in my platoon that didn't freeze. Hopefully the rubber bladder corrected the problem.
Hey Dave, huge fan of you ! You gave me tons of inspirations, knowledge for free and I really like the way you express you thoughts about a product or any thing because you speak the truth and everything you present are just awesome and well worth the money ! Thanks you for your great support behind free knowledge and I really learn a lot of things from you ! You're like a father to me , and I'll do my very best to keep you going by shopping at your website ! Thank you ! Please take care ! -Tom.
Hey this is another wonderful vid. Thanks so much for all the work you do to help us become educated. I was wondering if this canteen cup works well with your $8 pack stove? Thanks
Love the ad before this, the one about the guy who reverse designed an old prosthetic arm and made it work for him! As in the spirit of the Pathfinder way, make what you have access to work for you. ;)
Hey, Dave unfortunately being in Australia the bush is pretty unforgiving out my way. i think if you ever came to Australia to test your skills the 2 places i think that would test them the most is the Northern Territory - Arnhem Land and Brisbane Park Forest Queensland but i've been hooked onto your vids now for a while and ive realized a lot of the same techniques work just as well here in Aus just slightly modified versions :) and you have also got me into bow hunting now :)
Dave, while we were in Korea you must have seen at least one of the older sergeants that kept bourbon in his canteen for "medicinal purposes, and because it don't freeze." I remember one in particular who carried Silvac for just those reasons, and because it was so much cheaper.
The arctic canteens rule for winter trekking. Just keep in mind that they are HEAVY, and are of double-wall construction, so you won't be boiling in them.
I usedd an insulated bottle on a trip last year. The temps were below 0F. I was nearly out of water so I put some snow in my water and tucked the bottle under my coat thinking the snow would melt into the water. Wrong. Insulation works both ways, duh. What I ended up with was a full bottle of thick slush that I couldn't even pour. I hiked the last two hours eating snow. The water was frozen when I got home after another two hours in the truck with the heat on. Lesson learned.
Great video Dave thanks for posting as I live in Canada I may look into getting one of these As this arctic Canteen is rubber lined on the inside I am guessing you wouldn't want to boil your water in the canteen it's self?! am I thinking correctly?
Dave, Love the videos you put out on youtube. I think the reviews you do are great the seem to be honest and very informative. I would really like to see a review of the two BHK PLSK 1 & PLSK 2. I know thiss is probably an old subject but I just sort of found out about these two knives and I want to buy one just not sure which one. I don't know of any dealers that sell these knives in Upstate,N.Y. so I have to make my choice by what I see on youtube. Thanks for the great videos.
@thewonderju I think it's double walled like a thermos. So I guess it could freeze, but it would take a very long time, and you'd likely have drank it all by then.
@vettepilot427 Technical info: salt, since it separates into Na+ and Cl-, lowers freezing point twice as much as a compound which does not dissociate when it dissolves. This is why calcium chloride, CaCl2, is used to salt roads--it dissolves into 3 rather than 2 ions: 1 Ca2+ and 2 Cl- ions. So it's 1.5 times as effective as normal salt in lowering the freezing point of water. `Results depend on the amount of solute and type. E.g. I'm not sure what happens to chlorine dioxide when it dissolves.
@sharpshooter1231 The canteen is double wall..... aluminum on the outside, and steel inside. wit a rubber suction lid. (not the whole inside is rubber lined) I looked it up.
Dave I love your videos man, even though your a "T.V star" now, I think it's great that your still posting vids, as long as you keep posting straight to the point vids like this, I'll keep watching.
This canteen is boss.. Great too for keeping water; good and cold, in a closed vehicle, on a hot day.. It's like an all day deal.. It doesn't have the plastic taste that other canteens have.. Water tastes as it should.. I bought several of them.. Great video; great canteen.
Dave, love the videos......though this is video is on the canteen I have 2 questions from previous videos.........first from the farmers cheese video ,,,, is there any way to make butter in the wild??....I've seen these ice cream balls for making ice cream maybe there's a way to make butter in this fashion.......second.....from the 21st CLH series what about melting pennies down for shot clad coins (pennies) don't melt as easy as lead but will......cost is about the same
@mysss29 Thanks very much for the info. I know that we also use salt for the same reason when making homemade ice cream. My reason for asking is for alternatives for those that don't have a winter canteen. If we use some kind of water treatment that lowers the freezing point an appreciable amount, a winter canteen may be unnecessary in all but extreme conditions. One would assume the military already thought of that since they issued iodine and winter canteens both.
The cup alone is awesome. It can take the place of a mess kit pot. One less thing to carry. You could just about bake a loaf of bread in that cup. lol How many cups that size does it take to fill the canteen ? I'd guess less than 3 .
One couldn't boil water directly in the canteen it's self with the rubber liner right? And is this 1 quart/ 32 oz? Also, this brings to mind other canteens-- If water in the pathfinder stainless steel canteen froze, and the frozen water expanded, would the canteen be in danger of splitting like pipes in a home would?
A trick to carrying water in the cold is to keep the canteen under your jacket next to your body. Water will freeze in that canteen, nothing is insulated 100 percent.... just saying, and it gets a crap load colder where I live. As in -30c or colder.
Dave I live in Canada Edmonton Alberta. I can not find this at any of my stores around here iv have traveled up to 1hour 30 min away ... stuff in Canada is just not as easy to find it seems. do you have any suggestions or know of a website that i can trust?
I've had one of these for over 25 yrs. The thing is built like a damn tank. Never had the cover or the cup. I need to find them because I really do like the canteen.
Thanks Dave and those canteens are the bomb I got mine brand new also and they where buy one get one free, well I bought one complete and the other was bare ass but I talked the guy into the cup and cover in on the other! And they really work
Dave, ever thought about doing (if you haven't already) a how-to-distill-water-using-your-canteen video? I know you can't do it using this one because of the rubber, but other models...
dave awsome video and any updates on the kentucky video review shoots i sent in a application for it just wondering how ur family is and whats happening with that take care and hope all is well with family
What I like most abou this cup Is that it has so many uses for it reply to his and give ms all your ideas mine r for baking bread for disinfecting h2o for makin a stew or cooking maybe even makin it into a trap the old stick strin trap some ppl might know what I mean but so many uses thanks Dave I'll be buying my own soon

The cool thing about military surplus is that it has been keeping us in the military alive for longer than the hipsters working at REI have been alive. I know that a lot of the surplus stuff is not the absolute best quality, but it gets the job done at a price that the common man can afford.
Thanks for the post Dave.
I hope that one is an improved model from the one I was issued while in the National Guard

Awesome, you continue to amaze me with what I can learn even about a simple canteen, thank you so much!
I carry a 3ltr bladder inside my Rocket Pack backpack. Last weekend I slept out in -8 with a friend of mine who wanted to try out some new kit he had. Thank you again Dave, excellent product, I'll be keeping an eye out for one for sure.

I liked this review for the simple fact that it reminded me that something simple that we take for granted, water, can become unavailable even if we pack it in. Hey thanks for sharing this man. I was in the military & never knew of these. Keep up the gear reviews. Awesome job.
When purchasing one on these canteens check the date of manufacturing. The one Dave has was dated 1984. love this...i live in wisconsin, so this helps a lot. and i love when you just recommend things you dont sell
Excellent review, Dave. Thanks. I've been curious about this canteen for some time now.
Hey this is another wonderful vid. Thanks so much for all the work you do to help us become educated. I was wondering if this canteen cup works well with your $8 pack stove?

Great review Dave..
Thanks for all your hard work.
Thanks Dave! Been wondering if this canteen was a good buy as I've been seeing it everywhere lately.
Very cool! I love the surplus stuff!

dave thanks for all your videos
Great video Dave thanks for posting as I live in Canada I may look into getting one of these
As this arctic Canteen is rubber lined on the inside I am guessing you wouldn't want to boil your water in the canteen it's self?! am I thinking correctly?
A new one. Which surplus store did you get it at? GI Depot, General Merchandise or another? Thanks!
Dave can you post the name of the store where you purchased the canteen from? Not sure if they are into mailing any of them out or not. Thanks.
Did you try something warm in it (tea?), Wonder how that would hold up...
Good Vid and thanks!
The opening theme music always makes me happy.
Great Review on the wool blanket. Thanks for sharing!
That's a nice. efficient set up. Thanks Dave!

Thanks Dave for the great review of this rock solid item.
@sharpshooter1231 no because stainless steel, and also if you are carrying it around with you it shouldn't be cold enough to make your lips get stuck
@thewonderju I think it's double walled like a thermos. So I guess it could freeze, but it would take a very long time, and you'd likely have drank it all by then.
where do you get all your army surplus stuff? i only know of one near me in newport ky. i've always loved all the old army style gear.

Thanks Dave I love the product reviews!
Great stuff. Every now and then Uncle Sams Retail Outlet has these canteens up for sale.
Dave I love your videos man, even though your a "T.V star" now, I think it's great that your still posting vids, as long as you keep posting straight to the point vids like this, I'll keep watching.
Hi Dave. if you are in a cold weather like montana winter, would a magnification glass still be able to start fire? Thanks
This canteen is boss.. Great too for keeping water; good and cold, in a closed vehicle, on a hot day.. It's like an all day deal.. It doesn't have the plastic taste that other canteens have.. Water tastes as it should.. I bought several of them.. Great video; great canteen.
i have 1 of these, alot older but still works well.
this summer i want to test to see if it will keep water cold longer.
Dave, love the videos......though this is video is on the canteen I have 2 questions from previous videos.........first from the farmers cheese video ,,,, is there any way to make butter in the wild??....I've seen these ice cream balls for making ice cream maybe there's a way to make butter in this fashion.......second.....from the 21st CLH series what about melting pennies down for shot clad coins (pennies) don't melt as easy as lead but will......cost is about the same
I have had one of these for years but it has a green plastic screw cap with the plug cap in the top for hooking up a gas mask.
@mysss29
Thanks very much for the info.
If you threw the canteen in the fire to use as a hot water bottle, would it ruin the plastic lining?
A trick to carrying water in the cold is to keep the canteen under your jacket next to your body. Water will freeze in that canteen, nothing is insulated 100 percent.... just saying, and it gets a crap load colder where I live. As in -30c or colder.
Dave I live in Canada Edmonton Alberta. I can not find this at any of my stores around here iv have traveled up to 1hour 30 min away ... stuff in Canada is just not as easy to find it seems. do you have any suggestions or know of a website that i can trust?
but if the canteen is metal, are you not worried about your lips being stuck to the metal opening if the tempreture is below zero?
Dan
Great review Dave, keep up the great work!
im liking the product reviews your giving! keep them comin! great video!
Hi Dave, I can imagine that another advantage of thar canteen is that it's very flat so you can carry it inside your jacket if you have to.
Oh man I knew I should have kept mine! Now I'm looking for a replacement. Thanks for the review!
Hey big Dave what kind of reading material can you recommend
for a novice like me?
I've had one of these for over 25 yrs. The thing is built like a damn tank. Never had the cover or the cup. I need to find them because I really do like the canteen.
Thanks Dave and those canteens are the bomb I got mine brand new also and they where buy one get one free, well I bought one complete and the other was bare ass but I talked the guy into the cup and cover in on the other! And they really work
Dave, ever thought about doing (if you haven't already) a how-to-distill-water-using-your-canteen video? I know you can't do it using this one because of the rubber, but other models...
Another great review. Thanks Dave
Dave,
If you had to survive in any part of the world with just a basic kit where would it be and why?
Should powder coat that canteen bright Orange. It would double as a signal device (help find it as well if it dropped off your person).
Good advice! I got one issued 1976.
dave awsome video and any updates on the kentucky video review shoots i sent in a application for it just wondering how ur family is and whats happening with that take care and hope all is well with family
