    The whole 'decapitate and anaesthetize' rigmarole seems rather an arduous process to go through. Would the mosquitoes decline to copulate if offered the opportunity? And if they decline, maybe tell them what's in store if they persist?

      Knowing which male mated with which female. This can be important in research using gene editing. There was a study where they wanted to know if they could genetically engineer mosquito DNA to make all female offspring infertile. This was an attempt to get rid of mosquitos in certain areas. I'm not sure if it worked out but judging by the amount of mosquitos still left, it hasn't.

      @@Yvolve It actually was very successful, and several places have deployed thousands of these into the wild. At least one such example is California (there's a Tom Scott video on the subject if you're interested). It's just a long game and will take time for it to be fully effective.

    How did they find out that a decapitated male mosquito could still fertilize a female mosquito? Who thought to experiment with that?

    • @Yvolve
      @Yvolve 13 дней назад

      Someone who needed to be sure a specific male mated with a specific female. Probably also to study the reproductive system.

      @angemaidment5640 given how grants work, the researcher had to come up with the idea and then convince someone to give them money for it. So not only did the one person think of it but someone else thought, "what a great idea"

    After 15 years in Korea, I can tell you that Asian mosquitoes are very lazy. They're slow, but built like tanks. Canadian mosquitoes are light and fast, but you can kill them easy. Korean mosquitoes will shrug off a hammer, and when they bite you, it tends to swell up for about 3 days.

      Mosquitos infect 700 million people a year, killings tens of millions of them. It is estimated that around 108 billion people have lived in total, with mosquitos killing an estimated 52 billion of them.
      They really do kill more people than wars.
