- Come join us for a Bosnian Food Review as we head to Šadrvan one of our favorite restaurants in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. As one of our favorite restaurants in Mostar we ended up coming back 3 different times (including once before) to sample a number of different things on the menu. For this particular meal we keyed in on the following food items:
1) Bosnian Coffee with sugar cubes and Turkish delight (honey)
2) Dolma - stuffed peppers with minced meat, rice, parsley, onions and sour cream
3) Mix Plate Platter - Dolma, Bosnian cookies, stewed meat and rice
4) Grilled Vegetables - eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms
5) Baklava for dessert
It was a wonderful meal and we'd highly recommend you visit.

Bosnian Food Review - 5 Things to try in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina Travel Video Transcript:
Well hello there! We managed to find a really cool restaurant and we're going to go film there today. The rain hasn't stopped but it is a little bit lighter so we're going to make our way there and yeah show you what Bosnian and Herzegovina food is all about.
I'm very excited to be trying Bosnian coffee. Oh yeah. This is my very 1st time to try it. Apparently it is very similar to Turkish coffee. Super strong. It is supposed to be very strong. The grounds apparently are uh the coffee grounds are still at the very bottom. Yeah, so they're not filtered. They are not filtered out of the water so you have to let them yep settle before you pour yourself a cup.
It is nice and strong.
Also I feel like I should mention where we are eating because we kind of just ran in here with our umbrellas and didn't really show you the outside. It is called Šadrvan and it is on the west side of the river just as soon as you cross the bridge.
The feast has landed on the table. It sure has. And we're going to start with the first dish which is Dolma. Yeah. And if you have a closer look at this it is basically stuffed peppers with minced meat, rice, parsley, onions and it comes with a giant dollop of cream in the middle. A giant dollop.
This is kind of the ultimate mix plate with tonnes of sour cream. Sour cream. So then you have another one dolma stuffed pepper over there. One dolma.
What is really cool over here is you have it looks like some stewed meat. It is so tender I had that last night. And then you have the Bosnian cookies which is not a cookie at all.
So what is in it? I had this last night and it is basically like a beef patty. Right. So it made with ground beef, eggs, garlic, I think onions and like a little bit of breadcrumbs to give it texture along with rice.
Okay dish number 3. This isn't actually a main. This was our side order. Yeah. And we were trying to keep things relatively healthy. Yeah. So we got a grilled vegetable platter. So if you take a closer look we've got some slices of eggplant, zucchini. We have some mushrooms. It looks like another whole pepper.
And now for dessert and we're having Baklava. It is basically kind of like a mille feux pastry. Like a puffed pastry with all of these layers. And in between you've got like these finely chopped nuts. Yeah. With either honey or some kind of sugary syrup.
We just paid the bill. We sure did. What was the damage? So in local currency which is Bosnian Convertible Marka which has like I think 1.6 exchange rate with the US dollar. That came to twenty two US dollars and fifty cents and in Euros that was 19.40.
We'd give it a five out of five. We'll be back again. Tata!

Thank you! Ah, we loved Mostar and highly recommend visiting. That is cool you'll be going to Albania as well. You'll have to let us know how that goes as we only got as far as Montenegro. A restaurant that serves good good and comes along with friendly cats for you to pet and hug! That's awesome! I am a huge fan of cats too. The baklava looked delicious, I love that dessert, although I had tried it just a few times.

It's part of the tradition in Bosnia & Herzegovina, especially when people would visit their friends or family at home, first have some coffee with sweets, then after a good laugh and talk, have the lunch or dinner. And then have some cake after that... Funny thing, we're not an obese country at all, even if everyone's eating all the time lol

Montenegro is a beautiful coastal country and very cheap. There are many vistas that remind you of Italy and Croatia. I have never been there, but I know many friends and family that visit every summer. Coastal towns that come to mind are "Ulcinj", "Budva" and "Herceg Novi", but I am sure you can't go wrong with any coastal town.
Nothing wrong with how you hold your utensils. You should know everyone around the world uses different methods, utensils and hands. 😉

January is winter time, Mostar does not get any snow, so during winter they get a lot of rain and wind ..

We never tried that type of coffee before. It looks very interesting.
Thats the difference of Bosnian Kahva and Turkish one. In Turkey they put coffe in and watter too make the coffe and in Bosnia we cook it as watter will be heated seperate and on the end you will just put coffe and burn it just for some seconds for the coffe to get the taste and then pour water in it wait till the coffe comes to the top and done.
Bosnian "Rahatlokum" is Turkish Delight. :)

Lovely! Culture resembles Turkish because that area was part of Otoman Empire. Other part of town is Latin (Croatians mostly live there).

It is so great to have such a wonderful feedback for Mostar, the most beautiful city in Bosnia. People also recommend Cevapcici in Travnik, even tho I never ate them there it is quite true that they are the best. You were fortunate from one of the other videos to eat the cheese from Travnik and Livno, also unique and gorgeous. Sarajevo has gone wild these years with varieties of international cuisine, not quite sure where to eat some traditional meals. I stick with the Steak, wherever I go :D and the Durum, I believe they can barely go wrong anywhere.

In Mostar restaurants are so many cats and they are feeling so safe and confident that they almost like to rest on our lap! And they are very protected by restaurant staff as they keep all the storages clean from the mice and other rodents. Dogs as well use to rest laid down on the cobbled road - no matter if it is just the main entrance to the restaurant...
Beautiful place, people, food you can't imagine thousand of peoples died because of war in this peaceful place before.

When ordering a turkish-bosnian coffee, you should drink lots of water, especially if they give you Rahatlokum (in some regions called Lokum or Ratluk) instead of sugar. You have to take a small bite, and drink a coffee while the Rahtlokum is still in your mouth

I think Sam will eventually prefer holding his knife and fork the proper way. Sometimes it looks like he really wrestles with his food and I bet he'll find the orthodox way is more efficient and he'll be able to spend less time cutting and more time eating.

Dollop on the stuffed pepper (Biber dolma) is actually a dollop of thick full fat yoğurt , meat patties are called Köfte, and finally it is BaklaVa in Turkish. Baklava taste better with ground pistachio and clarified butter but it is more expensive.

Haha, if you go to Bulgaria, it's not bAklava or baklAva, its pronounced baklavA - the stress is on the final vowel.
All we gotta do now is check how the Greeks and Turks pronounce it and we can sleep easy after that.

You certainly are showing not very big culinary experience nor discerning origins of certain foodies so some of your comparisons are just quite silly. I haven't seen such a great & healthy food at Vancouver Island like this one from Mostar so you are excused.
