I would never replace my G-Shock with any smart watch. Reasons:
-they don’t have the tough, tactical look of a G-Shock
-they are not nearly as tough
-they don’t give the wearer the same confidence in build quality
-they don’t have the cool factor as when you wear a G
-tough solar > charging every night
    -constant notifications are a headache
-smart watch is simply an extension of the phone..
    -the longevity factor etc.

The fact is that it is desirable that not only the watch be smart, but also its owner, who is able to competently manage notifications and their quantity. But I'll tell you a little secret: even if you are not able to correctly manage notifications, there is only one button to completely disable all notifications.

I wouldn’t overthink the “old man mentality” on this one. I am 23 years old and this video made a lot of sense. Used the Apple Watch early on when it was launched in 2015/16, at the end of 2021 and my go to watches are the gw-m5610 and gw6900-1

I had this urge to get a smart watch some time ago. I love watches, and I liked the idea of not having to check my phone for notifications and stuff, but I kind of knew smart watches weren't for me. So, before getting a "real" smart watch, I got a cheap one just to see how I actually felt about it. I ended up hating it, not because of the cheap watch, but because the notifications actually bothered me, and the fitness tracking thing lost its appeal after a while, plus it had to be charged during the night...Of course, I disabled the notifications but then it felt like I had a toy on my wrist and not a watch, and I basically had two phones to charge every day...all in all, it lasted less than a week. The watch is in a drawer somewhere and I'm glad I didn't get an expensive smart watch, it would be a burden trying to get rid of it. Great video, as always!

I'm a big casio and gshock fan but let me tell you, the closest "smartwatch" to a real g-shock is the Garmin Instinct Solar, I recommend you do some research on it:
Over 30 days battery like (plus solar powered so it can be infinite)
      Rugged and tough, military grade.
      Great display
Triple sensor (not requiring the phone)
Independent GPS (not requiring the phone)
Actual buttons like a watch should be (not a touchscreen so it can be used with gloves, in rain, etc..)
      And much more.
All my watches are casios and gshocks, except this one, I think it's the best of both worlds. Of course I have all the notifications disabled and all of that.

Having a simple time piece that is always on time with a few simple features is great. I also do endurace gravel / road riding and having a watch that never runs out of battery, will survive any condition I put it through is great. I recently picked up a new G-Shock Rangeman thanks to your great video.

Wore the Apple Watch for years, but about a year ago I decided to get into traditional watches (analog and digital). Smart watches lose ALL value in just a few years, aren't built for durability, and have a very finite lifespan.
It's nice to disconnect and have a watch that's just a watch. The value in my beloved $19 Casio AE1200 World Time is insane.

I still can't see a smart "watch"' as a real watch . Sure it tells the time. But so does my microwave oven. But I would not call a microwave oven a clock.. For me, it´s a external cellphone screen on a strap. And just like a phone it needs very frequent charging. Will be obsolete in a couple of years. And I seriously doubd that it will still function after 10 years.

i will consider them "real" watches when the battery can last at least a month. it's an arbitrary standard but that's where i draw the line. apple watches have horrible life, only 18 hours. galaxy watches are better at 40 hours. hmm maybe not a month, maybe a week would be more realistic, we might have smart watches like that in a decade. a month of battery life seems much farther away. it's like bluetooth earbuds. they were around for a long time before i got them, but i didn't start using them until there were models that could operate for 8 hours straight, which is a typical work day

I’ve had an Apple Watch since the series 2 came out, so 5 + years now, I’m 28 years old, it was my first proper watch that I actually wore everyday.
I’m now totally into your videos and have been looking at “normal” watches for a while now, as you say in your video it’s very tedious charging it nightly, I also use none of the features it has to offer, I only use it to tell me the time, it was very trivial when I first got it to read and send text from but it soon didn’t make sense for me to do that and instead just get my phone out of my pocket, I can see the appeal to smart watches however for me I’m seriously looking at a g shock watch for just my general day to day time keeping :) and never needing to charge it haha 😂 I totally agree with what your saying and I’m coming over from the other side :) “going backwards” some would say

Here's my story: I am an avid gshock collector as well as select casio watches(mostly gshocks though). I was always curious about owning a smart watch, never owning one. However, I was never willing to pay 300 plus dollars for one but still curious so here's what I decided to do. I went on ebay and searched and found a 42mm samsung galaxy watch(first generation) brand new but open box from a preferred seller. I paid about 100.00 for it. An older smart watch, yes, but what the heck since I've never owned one before, the experience will be new to me regardless. I'm aware that the updates are long done for it but it still does what a smart watch does and connects perfectly to my galaxy s20 ultra. Will I ever upgrade to another smart watch? Not likely but I've satisfied my desire for the experience. When and if the smart watch goes, dies, ect..... I will be satisfied with days because I chose not to make a huge investment into one. As far as gshocks go, no smartwatch can replace or outweigh them in value, longevity, or durability. Gshock forever!!

Here is my two cents: In the past I have a cheap fitness band on one hand and a g-shock on the other. That fitness band knows everything I need, but the charging, and the fact that I have two watch on me is constantly bugging me. So. I bought a relatively cheap GBD-100 that has a simple cr2032 battery in it, so I don't have to charge it every day, and knows everything I want. I only want, some basic motion tracking and notifications. I am however very curious about the advertised 2 year approx. battery life. It sounded way too impressive, but I will see it.

@@rugal15086 If I am correct, the main difference between the H1000 and 100 is the solar charging capability, the gps, and heart rate sensor. Still no touchscreen, and still mostly a watch. If you need gps or heart rate, or just want the solar charging feature... Sure. I am happy with the lower model, so yeah. It is awesome, but I don't need those feature (ok the solar one is REALLY nice...), so I just bought a cheaper model.

I have the 20 or so watches that I cycle through wearing all set for alarms that go off at the same time. Each one isn't all that loud, but that many watches all going off at once on my bed stand wakes me up :)
As for smart watches. I had a pebble that I was rather fond of. It did a good job of being a watch. The time was there most of the time and the battery lasted about a week.
I replaced it with an Apple watch. That was ok, but I had to charge it every day. Such a pain. And, it was not very good at showing the time. I wasn't happy with that and sold it. I replaced it with a casio 5610. All it does is tell the time, and that's what I wanted. Since then I've bought hundreds of watches. It's a bit of an addiction.
But, smart watches are ok, I guess. But, not for me.

I bought an expensive smart phone for the first time two months ago. It was so expensive that I also bought an expensive case and screen cover to protect it. Then it bothered me having to dislodge this bulky object from my pocket whenever I want the time - having to squirm against people on the train, and what if I drop it? So I started getting interested in watches. I decided against smart watches for most of your reasons - I have enough screens in my life, and the charging and updates seem like a big hassle. "Real" watches are durable, they come in so many styles, and they have many different features to choose from. So far I've bought a Citizen eco-drive and a Seiko automatic. I'm enjoying them a lot. They are useful, but most of all I like having a different **kind** of technology.

This video is really good at talking about the pros and cons of owning a smartwatch. My personal experience after owning a Samsung and Apple smartwatches is that they are great for keeping track of your fitness. The miles you walked, run, etc. But that's where they stop being good for me. I prefer normal watches, I don't have to baby them, and they do their job all the time to keep time for a fraction of the cost.

Maybe you could try a Garmin instinct which is kinda close to a g-shock, it is tough, has some shock resistance, it has a very legible always on monochrome mip screen like a gbd-100 has, 100m of water resistance and there's also a solar assisted version. I use it for my workouts and I really enjoy it but when I return home I always switch to my 5610... The combi bracelet is so much more comfortable

The reason I wore a smartwatch and now throwing it away and wearing a classic watch again is that the smartwatch is a nuisance. You need to take care of it constantly. If you need a period of peace you need to scramble the phone options to disable notifications then reenable then check if they work etc. Smartwatches are designed by ad people so they attract your attention back to the phone and it's ads in a matter of minuts. Google doesn't want you to look away from your phone for long.

I bought two Casio watches in my lifetime and they both broke. Just the band on one, then I lost it somehow before getting a new band, but it broke quickly as I recall. After that, I went back to Timex Ironman watches which, for me, have always been indestructible. The bands do wear out and need replacing, but they usually go quite a while before needing to. Anyway, I lost my favorite Ironman watch running through an airport many years ago, which had a lot of sentimental value attached to it (all my many marathon times, and the training for them, were wrapped up in it). Anyway, I now sit here with a Seiko automatic; simple and beautiful. Love it. But really thinking about an Apple watch. My less lovely, inexpensive Ironman I use only for runs, but I will never love it like I loved my old and since discontinued one. The idea of a watch that I can keep on and use for runs and everyday things is appealing, and there are some bonuses in the much more it can be used for. Just thinking I might not love it even as much as my simple Seiko.

The Smart Watch seemed like a cool idea until I saw the price. It's a bit expensive for a thing that becomes obsolete as my phone gets older...also I need a device that I can wear at work that can take a bit of abuse. Got a Samsung S3 as a gift and tried it for a while. Compared to my ProTrek3100 it just does not make sense. A personal choice, for sure, but here are my points:
    - solar-powered vs need to charge it daily;
    - hassle of constant updates and awful app UI on S3 vs the robust functionality of Casio;
    - atomic vs not atomic...... and many more.
Two things which have convinced me of Casio: went to the sauna with ProTrek for the test, small screen dimming but other that that rock solid. I went to my hometown which lies just 300 km outside the German atomic synch tower, and Casio was able to synch up on the second attempt. So in my mind, Casio has delivered outside their warranty and this is about it - to be able to use their products even a bit outside the initial expectation. That, combined with the ABC functionality of ProTrek leaves almost no room for the current generation of smart wstches, in my mind.

I've always had an fascination/ obsession with watches. Always worn one. And yes, you can own both. Sometimes I just want a break from social media etc, so I'll wear my Casio. Yes they both have their plus&minuses. Battery and software are the big reasons for staying with "old school" tech. I have to charge my samsung gear s3 frontier every night since I got it 4 years ago. Every night! I wouldn't put it underwater for a lengthy period. Or drop it anymore than 3 ft. Lol. Thanks for the great vids, you have reignited my obsession with watches, particularly with casio. I wish I had kept my watches over the years as well. Everytime I look at my casio, it takes me back to a much simpler.... and younger time. Lol. Hello from Newfoundland Canada. 🇨🇦 ⌚⏱🕛

I have never stopped using a watch, after I got my first in 1988. I am used to it and rely on it to always work. Also, having my 2000 Suunto Vector on my wrist gives me comfort I have all functions I need available all the time and also I have so many memories with it. This is the watch I wore trough army, in my wedding, had it on my wrist when my kids were born, so there is the warm emotional connection to having the watch on my wrist.
Smart watches, I don't want a watch that I have to charge. I also don't want to be constantly hooked on my phone and extend that to wrist. I am not against tech, I work in electronics R&D, but sometimes I just want to enjoy life without the phone.
Also I hate the current technology cycle where phone battery lasts a 2 years and then battery with work costs more than the phone at that point. Same thing with Bluetetooth headphones, once the battery dies, they are gone. I want something thay lasts, I have enough tech I have to maintain and play with.
HR and GPS watches, currently do not attract me, since there is no need to post my every excercise to social media and in cycling that is my main sport, I have my Garmin Edge. I might be interested in the GPS HR etc watches when Casio makes one and it works 💯 solar.

My girlfriend's adult children bought her a smart watch because her cell phone is often in another room, or at the bottom of her purse. By the time she gets to the phone she may miss the call. While wearing her smart watch, she can answer the call while also going to get her phone from wherever it is. This has made her life easier, and also gave her children a feeling of security, in that they knew that she could always answer the call, wherever she was. She likes some of the extra functions that monitor exercise, heart rate, etc. I, on the other hand, am a "real" watch junkie. I love mechanical and digital watches to tell time, and as fashion accessories. No Smart Watch for me.

A watch that tells the time clearly at a glance, is always accurate, can cope with everyday knocks and bangs and never needs winding or maintenance is as good as it gets. For everything else a mobile phone is probably better. Having additional time features such as tide and sunrise and sunset times make sense in a survival watch and a compass and barometer are all you need for navigation and weather awareness. Anything more, then a mobile phone is better.

All very well reasoned points. If I can add a couple more:
It was cool when only a few people had the Apple Watch. But then everyone started getting one. And they all look exactly the same. Black monolith screen. It was bad enough walking around with identical black phone monoliths. Now everyone has them strapped on their arms, looking like (semi) advanced versions of the apes at the start of 2001 A Space Odyssey. I don’t want to be an ape with a monolith on his arm. Casio for me.
The Apple Watch gives my upper arm a bad rash. Maybe it’s the field you were talking about that it generates. But no AW, no rash.
The constant notifications are annoying to me. Plus I don’t want my watch telling me when to stand up or meditate.
I have the ever present feeling that all my data is being sent right back to Apple, including all that heart rate data, plus whatever other medical data I enter into it.

But what’s the point of having a smart watch if I don’t want the notifications on? Now I have a Casio with solar and Bluetooth, and I have the same accuracy of a smartwatch but without the interference from notifications and I can concentrate with my work. And when I am ready to check notifications I can go back to my my phone. I am also the kind of person who likes to wear my watch 24 hours a day, and a solar watch never need to go for the charger. For me, a non-smartwatch makes me more productive and enables me to concentrate.

I stopped wearing my Casio collection since alarms are limited in number and alarms are not loud enough to wake me up (I also want a stopwatch and a timer). So now I started a smart watch collection and use them like I did with my Casios. Some smart watches has up to a 25 day battery (maybe some are longer). And most work great without a phone. Some can be bought for as little as 25 bucks. I find smart watches used as dumb watches to be a fantastic alternative to Casio watches. Just saying.

I'm a big Casio fan. Not only a Casio fan but a G-shock, solar power, Multiband/Bluetooth fan.
I never have to worry about charging or checking the accuracy. I don't want my watch to annoy me with chats, messages or work.
I'm over 60 and I can't really hear the alarm. I use my phone for that. Basically, I use my watch as a watch and Casio G-Shock is the best, water proof, drop resistant and bang on the exact second, date and day.

Regarding alarms on my G-shocks I just never actually use them, phones are just so much more handy and versatile for this function. I wonder if you could think of Smart-watch vs Digital-watch in the same way people think of Quartz-watch vs Mechanical-watch. Even this is probably too simplistic as more and more quartz/digital (incl. casio) watches come with blue-tooth connection which blurs the distinctions even further. But I have to agree it does not sit well with me to purchase a smart-watch knowing it will be pretty much obsolete in a few years.

I've got a variety of gshocks, casios, automatic watches and an Omega Seamaster. I got a Garmin Instinct for running and hiking, it could fill the roll of "one watch does it all." But I just don't get the satisfaction wearing vs a gshock with a specific function I needed on that day, or my Omega when I want to stare at it for no reason. Smart watches just aren't satisfying.

No stupid color screen that drains battery (actually it's monochromatic diplay like a casio)
    And much more.
All my watches are casios and gshocks, except this one, I think it's the best of both worlds. Of course I have all notifications disabled

I'm coming late for an answer, obviously. I apologize but I dicovered your channel just recently. Anyway...Regarding the smartwatches vs "traditional ones", I wear a garmin instinct 2 solar tactical (the closest thing to a gshock I found) just for the convenience of having mgrs position right on my wrist (I'm in the military), but....at the same time, I couldn't resist having on the same wrist a squared, solar, radio-controlled gshock. So I bought a velcro strap on amazon, a 22mm adapter for the gshock, and now I'm wearing both of them attached to the same strap. Why? Just because I can:)

I have a GearS3 Samsung smart watch I bought 4 years ago and used it a lot but ended up back with my Casio and I agree with you on all those points why I still wear a Casio or my timex. But the gear s3 is handy when I don’t want to always carry my phone . But I will always wear my Casio or Timex digital watch anyways and I will probably keep the smart watch just for certain occasions.

My issue with smartwatches is that they are so interconnected with your phone and the internet it's going to become worthless as a device in several years. But even with digital watches, you are buying something that will last decades or your lifetime. I just refound the first watch that I bought myself in 1998. A guess quartz diver and it still works. Even after spending 10 years at bottom of my mom's purse (I lent it to her and forgot about it) and I'm in love with it all over again. Will I be able to say that about some smartwatch I can't even replace the battery on? I think not.

I can fully appreciate that some people might just like messing with "smart" watches, and that's cool. That being said, these are the main reasons I can think of why I am not currently interested in them.
1 - planned obsolescence (a couple years vs. several years to decades or indefinite)
2 - battery/power performance (days vs. years to decades or more)
3 - tracking, data collecting and sharing, targeted marketing, and "walled gardens"
4 - reliability and security (software/firmware bugs, incompatibilities, optimization, protocols, security vulnerabilities, etc.)
    5 - fragility
6 - repairability and hardware customizability
    7 - bang for buck
8 - aesthetics and user interfaces (it's somewhat subjective, but overall I'd rather a watch that looks and is interacted with like a watch rather than a tiny touch screen/"smart" phone strapped to my wrist)
9 - practicality (conventional PCs, laptops, tablets, phones, calculators, and of course watches can do similar things that I want better when and where I might want them to - to me a "smart" watch would be a secondary backup option, not a preferred primary one - at face value this might be considered handy like a Swiss Army Knife, but not for me when accounting for the other shortcomings; it makes for a very poor backup, let alone replacement)
10 - hypester trendiness (to each their own - at least we can all enjoy vinyl records regardless of our tastes in music, right? 😏)

As with you I'm at the age when small print is becoming more difficult to read. However, having my Apple Watch 6 provides a lot of the info (health, reminders, text, etc.) I need at a (close-up) glance. In addition, the Watch has a silent vibration alarm which is valuable to me since my wife is a light sleeper. On the other hand (literally), I have several watches in my small collection, including Casio ProTrek, G-Shock, Citizen and Seikos. So now, I wear a regular watch (analog or digital) on my left wrist, and my Apple Watch on my right for everything else. 😁

Don't get one, LOL. I have an Apple Watch Series 5 I purchased 2 years ago and now my Casio G-shock GW-6900 sits in my office. I wanted to go back to the G-shock because I never had to worry about battery, swimming under water, and especially the beach with sand etc. Now I can't go back since I'm too addicted to the convenience of checking messages and Apple Pay. I do subject my Apple Watch to a good bit of water, I never take it off when showering etc. So far it seems to be holding up, but I felt more confident with the G-shock being 200m. I made a pledge that I would go back to G-shock if I ever damaged my Apple Watch with water. We will see...

Don’t like the idea of regular charging or paying relatively big bucks for an item that will become outdated very quickly and obsolete all too quickly. I’m happy to see messages as and when I look at my phone, don’t need to view them instantly on my wrist.
But that is just me and my stage of live - nothing at all wrong with smart watches and if people like them then that’s great

I'm always surprised wireless charging of the Apple Watch for instance, is so acceptable; personally it offends my sense of efficiency more than anything. One thing I can see a use for though is detecting a fall. I, like most people I know, am not getting any younger and this could literally be a life-saver. If I ever got a smart watch I'd just do a (Norman) Schwarzkopf RIP and have a watch on both wrists. It may be a smart watch, but it's not a /real/ watch, is it?

I cant think of charging a watch daily which you wear just for time or fashion or some entertaining features which you get bored of, may be for people with health issue it would be good, like my mom , I am looking forward to buy one for her.
But as far I know her , she won't charge it either.

Your point is well taken about the life of the "Smartwatch". I have to consider it to be a "Electronic Device". Moreover, with the Health Sensors, is it a Medical Assist Device? I am of the age also where a small screen is hard to read. But to have those medical sensors, could be an advantage. Another great video. Did you do one on the GeoTron in the background?

The fact that it needs your phone kind of is a deal breaker for me. Terrible battery life. They need to be independent of the phone, but who wants to pay a fee for a plan to make that work just for a watch? And if you love watches, you are never going to just wear one watch anyway, you won't be using it enough to justify the plan you are paying for.

From what I've observed they seem to be more of a hassle than a convenience, half the time they're not even wearing it because their batteries die and need to be recharged. I try to maintain a spreadsheet listing all of my watches. There’s a place to tell me which batteries they each use and when I last changed the batteries. I usually buy batteries in packs of 5 from Amazon vendors and they’re very inexpensive (like, less than $2 each). I keep a few ziploc bags of watch batteries in the refrigerator, although I don’t know if it’s necessary to keep them that cool in storage. I also have a few very small batteries for my wife’s watches (not Casio) so any time any of our watches needs a new battery I can do the job right here at home.
