I'm lying in bed around 5 am trying to figure out if what I'm hearing is a Cricket, Trig, or Katydid. I'm pretty sure it's a Katydid, but I think I might want to hear more to be certain
Exactly why I’m here! Trying to figure out that exact sound after telling my lady I thought it was soothing and reminded me of falling asleep with my window open above my bed.
It's so interesting that not only are they physically evolved to look like leaves, but they even make the SOUNDS that trees make, they almost sound like creaking trunks and branches, at least that's what I thought they sounded like when I was living on lake michigan
I was on a camping trip a couple of weeks ago when in the middle of the night while it was completely silent sound #6 started happening right next to my ear outside the tent. The click was so loud and the frequency at just the right pitch to actually hurt my ears.
Growing up as a boy in South Jersey I was fascinated by grasshoppers and katydids. Funny years later in the Marines I recall seeing CH53 choppers up close and they reminded me of grasshoppers. The CH46 always reminded me of the katydid. It wasn’t until my wife brought home a Basil plant that I saw my first up close katydid. Funny it became my friend it was there very young as I watered the herbs on our deck and grew to allow me to pet it. It always waited for me to come out and at night it sang beautifully. Gods creation, wonderful.

Here west of Milwaukee they are freaking loud. I've lived several places they're not loud like they are here. Even some neighborhoods have them and others don't. I do miss them after the first or second hard frost. Sometimes a warm spell will get a few to keep going until the end of October. Right now they're at their peak, middle of August, pretty special sound, and yet I never see them. I'm going to fix that.
