Often people mistake our normal european squirrels as Grauhörnchen, just because they have black, or bown fur instead of the red fur, that a lot of people think of. But all of them are actually the same european squirrels and not the Grauhörnchen. Grauhörnchen are larger and they don't have hair on their ears (but keep in mind that some of the european squirrels also loose their ear hairs after the winter and don't have them during summer, so just because a squirrels doesn't have them doesn't mean it's a Grauhörnchen ^^). But you are right they are invasive and people fear that they might reach Germany at one point. But right now there are no Grauhörnchen living in Germany. But in England and Italy there are Grauhörnchen and they've been a treat to the european squirrels, especially in England they've kind of replaced the european squirrels.
