As a conductor, you don’t expect musicians to look at you constantly. That’s why you shouldn’t “overconduct”, meaning being full on the whole time. This way when something important comes that you NEED the musicians to be looking at, they will know it’s important and pay attention.
They also made a good point with the periphereal vision and concertmaster.
Ling Ling is so good he doesn’t even have to use his eyes to sight read
No Ling Ling alwyas knows the piece already so he never has to sight read
He can play with his eyes closed.

The concertmaster part remind me of one day that my eyesight got really bad and I didn't had my new glasses yet. So, I went to rehearsals with orchestra and I thought "well, I'm in the last seat, all alone, If I cant see, at least I can fake a little". Suddenly, the conductor told me "hey, since the concertmaster is not here and you're all alone, why don't you sit in the concertmaster's place for today?" At that moment I knew I f**ed up.
Spoiler: The director ended roasting me bc I couldn't see anything and he wanted me to play aaaaaall by memory. The thing is, sir, I can't learn something by memory if I can't see it first, thank you.

It's actually making the advantage of eddy having perfect pitch while sight-reading noticeable. when eddy was sight-reading, he was looking a bar ahead, at least in the easy ones, and with the time of a bar, he can actually build up and idea of what the next bar sounds like, then play by following the music inside his head. which is a great advantage. when brett was sight-reading, he was actually playing notes straight from what he sees, and its more like a reflex action where he trained himself to play the note when he sees it right away, which is how i personally sight-read music cuz i dont have perfect pitch.
This is an interesting analysis and makes a lot of sense!
Someone mentioned in this comment section that they are a psychologist and they want to experiment with this software. I think having musicians with perfect pitch and musicians without it, might result in some interesting variables.
@@heyytheree Tell your brother that he doesn't practice enough Lol. There is no way we know for sure how perfect pitch affect sight-reading abilities, that's why it is a good proposal for research topic. I read your comment before that you are twelve, and assuming your brother is not a lot older or younger than you, and definitely not as old as Brett and Eddy, lots of things still can change throughout the years which will affect you (and your brother's) abilities. Experience factor is one thing for sure.
I think not necessarily only those with perfect pitch can read a bar ahead. Those with good relative pitch may be able to do it once they started the piece. But for me, same as you and Brett, I cannot read one bar ahead🤦🏻♂️ my teacher tried to train me this (read 1 bar ahead ) but to no avail.
I have to imagine the main advantage to sight reading is mostly to the person who has done more sight reading. Moreso than perfect pitch or playing skill, it has to do with the raw speed of processing the notation.
Also, once extremely familiar with the scales in a key, it seems (from watching) that one can sort of fill in the middle notes based in familiarity with the fingerings? Maybe saving time to looking ahead for accidentals and volume and other details?
It was fascinating to watch this. But also just impressive at how well they do pull it all together.

Edit: I saw a comment about how they wanted to see a pianist’s eyes switching between clefs, and I think that’s a great idea. Y’all should bring on guests that play different instruments, like the opera singer y’all had that one time who showed awesome opera performances, the pianist from the Ling Ling challenge, and DEFINITELY have Hilary Hahn on. It’d be interesting to compare her sight reading, playing orchestral, and playing a memorized piece
guests right now?
Oh no i think you gave the pianist youtubers a content idea if they decided to do it on their own
Lee Cha Are there pianist youtubers that will likely to make this kind of content though (the educational one like Twoset)? Tiffany Poon is probably the most likely one, but she doesn’t really watch Twoset. Other pianist youtubers are usually memers, cover artists, skit makers, or just faceless beings. I will be glad to know if there is Twoset equivalent for the piano.
Can Brett and Eddy do it? I know they've shown some basic level of piano playing. (If guests aren't possible)
icesilverwind I would say they are more than just basic level piano playing, but not sure if it will be a fair comparison to this video cause they probably can’t play to concerto level. Bringing pianist guest such as Sophie will be a better experiment.

I would be interested to see where you look when playing a memorized piece as well
edit: I’m a violinist and violist, I know generally what happens and that you don’t look at anything in particular most of the time but I think it would still be quite interesting.
As a pianist, I look at the center of the keyboard, where I can see both hands, or focus totally at the left hand, occasionally looking at nowhere or closing the eyes. Only pay attention to the right hand when it's a tough passage. And as @Kaitlin Zylstra metionend, you sometimes don't realize you're the one playing (which causes some occasional accidents).
I've always wondered where people listening to music where their eyes look while staring into space...whether they move with the rhythm...even if just subtly
As a flutist I look straight through everyone/everything, I close my eyes, or I just stare into space
I mostly pay attention to the conductor while looking at the music for check points and notes i have for myself. You kinda get engrossed in the music while still being conscious of what you're doing and what's around you. You're conscious of the rhythm, dynamics and the other performers; you have to be slightly mentally ahead, but also expressing the emotions in the moment. It would be interesting to see what happens during an actual performance with different people.
@@Myself-anonymously I usually just stare at nowhere or close my eyes. Though rarely move my eyes along the music.
0:03 well done brett. a fantastic rendition of one of the greatest symphonies of all time.
I love how happy they are at 6:17
Loved this so much! As a harpist, there are so many times that I’m the only one. I am the section. I usually take my cue from where we are in the piece. I spent a lot of time listening, because who wants to count all those measures of rest? On the rare occasions that more than one harp is needed, it’s nice to have someone else back there with me. Loved seeing where your eyes tracked during sight reading and watching the conductor. I’d watch more of these.

Just realized they've been finally consistent in getting their video to focus. Hey Brett and Eddy, I had almost forgotten what you guys look like.
10:10 This is why it's important to put your music stand at the proper height. That way the conductor's baton is always visible just about the top of your stand/music.

3:15 I love how Brett is just pure chaos

oh wow 😲 this one's really interesting especially from someone who's not a musician like me. It's amazing to know how you function or how a musician functions when playing in the orchestra. In my head, you just play your instrument with no clear idea of how you really do it. Like how does one together with several different musical instruments work or sound harmoniously in sync when playing a piece. Now I have a little grasp of idea of how it really is. Like how you needed a concertmaster, how you followed or maybe translated what the conductor is doing, what the music sheet for, and how important it is to clearly hear the sound or of the instruments so you can all sound as one. It's so wonderful 😲 I'm in awe. Thank you for this video. I'm happy I learned something today. 🥰❤️❤️
On the 5th, I noticed Eddy looking at the concertmaster, too. One thing I saw from the start, Brett looks at the notes, right on them. But Eddy looks above the staff. Made me think he wasn't seeing the notes, but 'hearing' them (perfect pitch), as a group, then repeating the sound.
Ooo that might be the case!
I have perfect pitch too, and I realized what you've said is what I do unconsciously while reading sheet music (except unlike Eddy I suck at sight-reading so I can only "hear" notes correctly, but not playing them perfectly…and I play the piano *sigh*)
I dont even know what to comment at this point. All I know is that I enjoy watching these two.

The pearl of twoset constantly being entertaining and educational and inspiring!!!
6:15 I'd believe it if someone told me that Eddy gets more excited watching Brett sight-read than he does watching a sports event.
I often sing along with professional recordings when I’m learning a choral piece. I’m glad to see you guys occasionally playing along with a professional recording. It validates that method of practicing! I’m also one of those singers who learn the music more effectively when I hear the entire context of the music. I could learn my part on its own, but it will never be as accurate as hearing how my part fits in with the rest of the music.
Also, computer speakers not being loud enough is the primary reason I prefer to practice in a car. The car’s stereo can get loud enough for me to hear the music while I sing. Perhaps (if you are able) you ought to try practicing in the car, taking advantage of the high volumes that are possible.
How cool is the human brain?!?!? Soooo many complex processes happening at the same time here. Bowing, fingering, timing, intonation, dynamics, expression, sight reading (and reading ahead), watching conductor, listening to the musicians around you... like seriously how are we capable of all that at once? 😱

So many takeaways from this one:
1. Props to editor-san for showing how musicians multitask through split screen display, it helps a lot.
2. If it becomes more accurate, eye-tracking device can sort of help with beginners and intermediate musicians training/practicing instruments as well - like for sight reading or how much to pay attention to the notes vs conductor. Just a random idea.
3. BUT the device tends to be less accurate when tracking people wearing glasses, since it refracts light. I had the same issue once playing with it.
4. Imagine the incredible focus X-men's Cyclops must have, having to look at one single target for a really prolonged period of time.
I played with our wind orchestra in the park the other day and the conductor stood on a latter so everyone could see. I have never realized how much I rely on seeing him in peripheral vision until he was standing too high for me to see both him and my music at the same time.
It's amazing how many hours someone has to put on violin.

Great video fellas! Really interesting explanation of who we look at as orchestral violinists and why! But knowing WHY I do that is really helpful and insightful. Please more videos like this! :)

I did notice that Eddy was looking at the concertmaster more than the conductor. I kept wondering, "Why is he looking at the concertmaster?" And then he explained it afterwards. So I understand it more now. I'm not a string player. So I wouldn't know.
This is actually the most interesting eye tracking video I've seen, gives you an insight as to what subconsciously goes on in a musician's brain
I'm glad I'm not the only one who looks at the concertmaster instead of the conductor, becuase that way if she screws up, it's not my fault lol. Also, when I was in my various youth orchestras i had been known to be looking into the audience on rest bars in case there were any cute ladies out there which is easy if you are on the outer desk of the firsts...

8:50 (the piece itself): I think that what we do most. I was sightreading alongside and didn't exactly look at the conductor but I was still "seeing" him. Eddy is not looking at the line he's playing: he's looking above. I think it's because we "decide" to put our eyes in the middle so we've got both the sheet music and the conductor in our vision and as we're not looking straight at our line we're less distracted by it and more open to look at what's around (ie the conductor).
But that's my personal interpretation!
