- An incredibly low price tag and an impulse purchase brought us this introduction to the wild word of Indian rum, and incidentally, one of our worst scores ever. Enjoy.
That bottle is sold for £5 in India. 750ml of nostalgia, fun, sweet dark nectar.
It's massively popular, not because it's a refined product, but because it's dirt cheap.
Young drinkers start with it, and end up sticking to it for a lifetime. It's a cheap party alcohol for college goers and young adults alike.
There's also a cultural aspect to it. Even when they can afford the more expensive stuff, Old Monk is an old friend to many a heart broken individuals. We have a saying in India "Ghum ka saathi rum" - Rum, the friend in despair. It's a cultural thing now. Much like whiskey for westerners. And all of this just gives the Monk an unshakeable hold in the Indian rum market.
You'd be hard pressed to find an Indian drinker that doesn't swear by the Monk.
And you might wanna try Old Monk + coke + dash of lime. Yeah, sure, you don't like rum mixes....but have it our way once.
That's amazing info! Thankyou for your local insight on the matter. Down in our country many people have a similar association with Jagermeister. At least in the university scene...
Amlanjyoti Saikia that detailing there, gets my respect...
Bhai, Mon Tu Val logai dila beh. Its never about the taste with Old Monk, it's a cultural thing now. It's about feelings, the connections with the memories I have had with my best friends because of this particular drink. I never drink the Monk with people who are not worth sharing it with, when I drink with you, you should know that I consider you special. That is what, Old Monk is for me.
Couldn't agree more ..cheers
It's the only trustable friend of the college students in india,it never disappoints
Bitch please! It is trustworthy for even rich ass motherfuckers in India too.
That head is an accurate peg measure (60ml) .
Good to hear it has a function. 60ml is certainly a generous pour of rum though!
Yes bro
@Prranjal Shrivaastav 🤣🤣🤣
Yes it's a weird Rum......leave this Rum for Indians....we LOVE this Rum.
If this video has proved one thing it's that Old Monk holds a special place in the heart of Indian drinkers. In-fact we've learned most of what we now know about it through the comments!
Indian Love Old Monk
@@TheSingleMaltReview OLD MONK is the Best,
These are a bunch of bgots with poor analysis skills
@@TheSingleMaltReview my uncle swears by the mystical healing power of Old Monk. He has a drink or two regularly lol.
This rum is a blessing to people living in Himalayan States of India 😂😂 especially in winters
So you went the entire video and didn't address the elephant in the room: Why is the bottle nearly empty? =-|
Because sometimes I (Tim) like to say up until 4 in the morning and drink trash while I watch trash. It provided a good buffer between my better bottles in such scenarios.
Haha, fair enough.
@@Matt-gf4gd OLD MONK is the Best,
Add 60ml water to 30ml Old Monk
it takes a legend to love " the legendary old monk"
Actually, Old Monk is at least 7 years aged, in hot conditions of India. The export bottle you have is 12 years aged. That's equivalent of 36 years of casking in EU. So there is a way for that much vanilla to make it's way.
Actually, no way. There is only limited amount of material in each cask that can leech to the alcohol, and the vanilla-like substances are only part of it. If you leave booze for too long in a cask, eventually the bitter, astringent tanins overwhelm it (think of teabags left in too long). The most sweet-oaked honest booze I have had is Woodford Reserve, Double oaked, which usually goes to heavily charred casks twice to get as much sugars from the broken up sacharids as possible, it's naturally very dark, but nearly not much vanilla as this. This rum is definitely artificially flavored.
@@Kamamura2 Also going by reports from Indian whisky distilleries, the angel's share in spirit aging is very high in India conditions (can be as high as 12% a year). Aging a spirit for 12 years would mean that the vast majority of the spirit is lost to evaporation, with hardly any left for bottling. There's no way they could sell this stuff for such low prices if it were actually aged for any significant period of time.
It's actuall OLD MONK supreme .. not normal Old Monk which is actually 7 years aged..
How did the bottle got empty guys if it's that bad... Ha ha
First of all who pours rum in a wine glass?
Old Monk has cult status in India, not because its good but because its very accessible and not hard on the pocket for students. I dont like it at all, but here I am drinking Old Monk and Coke and viewing the video. LOL
Dont say "not because its good" because it's actually very good. I have access to the most expensive and refined liquors but I still love the taste of the good ol' Old Monk. And you'll find millions who agree with that sentiment.
its good bro, ilked its after effects. you just lost slowly and slowly. its just very good product for the price. ALSO ITS CHEAP BECAUSE OF NO ADS DISPLAY ANYWHERE.
Good when we were broke college students. I have never bought it again after college...but when I'm offered by others, i never refuse either. It was the BRAND in college and thus brings back a nostalgic feel to it.
I liked the honest review. In the market of getting likes by unnecessarily praising highly populated developing countries products, you guys are honest.
You have no idea of how dark rum is made. Its from mollases. Besides its way better than bacardi piss.
I'm currently drinking the Bacardi pish as I watch this video and I could not agree more with you.
bacardi is shit in front of old monk
When these experts get to know who actually started this Old Monk rum - (Gen Dyre a Britisher), all of sudden their pallets will start tasting it good. You will get to hear - oh Wow, where on the earth this rum has been hiding!!!
Mohan Meakin has long been suspected of using bulk grain alcohol in its Old Monk recipe. It's mixed with vanilla and other spices and then vatted. Those old vats are imparting their accumulated flavour from 100 years... But don't ever be fooled into thinking Mohan Meakin Old Monk is brewed from molasses.
@@matthedges6625 - you just spoiled my whole taste for rum. LOL I am not sure what does it mean by bulk grain alcohol.
Thanks for taking one for the team guys. As bad as this sounds, it’s shocking how empty the bottle is.
That's what I thought as well.
The novelty bottle makes it quite easy to get people to try it. Once.
Curse of the Old Monk.... That's why you are not getting subs
@
The Single Malt Review - thank you for your review of our Indian rum. One of the reasons that pops up in my mind for being very low costs - is due to no advertising/sales campaign costs involved on Old Monk products.
Coke + chilled water + lots of ice = You have an all time legend in your glass
the awesome part is i am drinking old monk right now in assam, northeast india....and it is one of the most favorite rum here. it cost 60 inr which is 0.82 us dollar.cheerz everyone
Old Monk: brings warmth in cold places, always a friend for poor students and brings nostalgia in old age in short it's the best friend a man could have
Some spirits need a mix and some can be taken neat -- Old Monk definitely needs a mix.
No
it's made from cane sugar, it's supposed to be sweet
I always see this in the store but have never tried it I might have to pick it up one of these days
I sincerely feel that Old Monkers needs to review these guys...!!!!. I luckily had an opportunity to taste most of the rums around the world and found the best being the vanilla flavoured Old Monk and the Captain Morgan.....
dudes you've stirred up the hornet's nest! hope you have learnt your lesson now 😂
I am from India .. they are giving their personal views what if they dont like .. we have to admit in India distilleries are not so much serious about making the product and really care about the process and quality. they just do it to the threshold level .. no matter its very popular in india and its cheap ... but it doesn’t mean its best ... I think these guys give honest review
Try Indian Amrut, Paul Jhon, Rampur and then u may have different views
Dumb fucks the both of them.
Sajag Raja yes those might be good ... but again topic is yes maruti suzuki cars are great in india and cheap but can you compare them with ford, toyota and volkswagen .. my comment was in that quality context
Hey guys, sorry for all the aggression from my native brothers & sisters. Its just that Old Monk is really close to our hearts. 🙂
Thank you though for your honest review!
May I suggest to use this one for rum based cocktails or a punch or just cola or if you're feeling adventurous in milk coffee.(Trust me I have tried it and loved it 😍)
PS: I had to give the video a thumbs down though. Sorry😅🤷♂️
The best rum ever
Crazy memories made
It's a legend in it's self
Interesting that your dp is also a monk 😂
Not od'd, om'd for sure🤣
@@ozzymendes5650 hahah
What's the best Indian liquor you guys ever tasted?
Love all these videos you guys do. Especially the rums! super interested in seeing any spirits local to you guys.
We had a look at a locally produced rum a while back ruclips.net/video/CIazgJ6Sc-M/видео.html
I just drank old monk in the rainy evening with my brothers, its lovely and matured❤❤❤
Its usually the first drink.. mostly because it is dirt cheap and with water added
because of the sweetness is a lot easier to drink than rest of the cheap alcohols which burns a lot
And u didnt buy the cheap old monk u actually bought the top of the line old monk.
Why cheap matters - college going youngsters starts with it and u know how situation is in college.
And if u drink something during that time even after getting job when u get a bit older and being able to afford better and expensive alcohol u still once in a while go backs to the old pal ‘old monk’ freshen up old memories, parties and those drunk stories, it also got you through some of the hard times like the crush who crushed your heart XD
It is extremely popular India. And if u can get your hands on military old monk rum you are in for a treat.. not only it’s cheap (750ml for about $1.25 but its also a better quality than its civilian counterpart)
-in Indian armed forces have their own liquor stores and alcohol allowance where they get tax free alcohol. So if u know someone in armed forces u can get them to get u a bottle or two.
I will have to see if I can sample some of this military grade rum at some point.
Picked up a bottle of this the other day in RAK for 10 DHS, the price caught my eye and I thought it was a typo. It's actually pretty good for mixing, and for the price I will always keep a couple bottles on hand.
Good with Luke warm water for cold days or when you are having a cold, and chilled coco cola for summers
Thanks for the review, a salesman tried to sell this rum to me and I was saved by your review.

I am pretty sure that this rum is meant to drink with water or soda.. Can't say for sure..i just stick with rum that are cheap..royal stag, jolly roger, old port etc.. Ah.. A poor man's life. 😔
I got ten bottles of Old Monk Supreme in Stock with me, I drink it regularly and I found it one of the best tasting and smooth sipping with no hang overs ever, these reviewing bastards are lying to you....
If you call Old Monk as “sipping” rum, you either have no taste buds or have destroyed them somehow. No way this is a sipping rum. It is meant for college students to shoot.
@@Lividbuffalo KUCCH BHI BHAINSE BUFFALO SALE
That's like reviewing the contemplative depth in the life of Kim Kardashian. India, an inexhaustable source for all kinds of extremes.
i live in mumbai and have never heard of this old monk ... is it even old monk ? or sub brand for international market ?
Wow you have never heard of old monk? 👏👏👏👏
I think he means this particular bottle. It may well be something they produce just for export.
@@TheSingleMaltReview ya but this was old bottle they changed the shape and labelling in 2018.
Still the name is quite popular among college students.
As it's most affordable and best rum in india.
This is old monk supreme. Normally we buys old monk regular which has that iconic bottle or gold reserves which has regular liquor bottle.
Would it taste good with Indian food?
It tastes great with (Indian pickle) these idots don't know how to drink it
It tastes best with cola and my fav
Top corporate honchos, businessmen, politicians, actors, artists started their journey with old monk, it had been with them through all good and bad.
It's a cultural thing, all amateur sommeliers forget the cultural aspect of reviewing spirits.
Old monk legend is love 😍😍😍😍
Old Monk is India's most popular rum and they've stayed that way without using advertising. Make what you can of that.
Old Monk's awesome though ♥️
OLD MONK is the Best RUM
Old monk holds a special place in a lot of Indians hearts. It's not a good rum, and I like to drink most alcohol straight but old monk is an exception because it just doesn't taste good straight. The few times I've had it, i had it with cola.
lol
The Monk has history not just personal nostalgic histories of the drinkers, but the brand has history. The monk is an acquired taste, not every tom dick and harry can appreciate it. Yes if you are an indian you will grow to love it. keep having it, you will fall for The Monk.
I love the fact that this is the most popular vid on this channel and it is about a cheap Indian rum😅.
PS - It has more to do with the cultural thing than the the rum itself.
Guys .. the way you drank it was wrong... I can swear by the monk to be the best thing to touch my lips... A peg measure, equal amount of cola and fill the glass with water... And that is the nectar I consider a blessing
that is what I feel, very plastic and artificial when i drink it. But since it is inexpensive, it is a favorite go to rum.
Oldmonk 90ml costs around a $1 in India, that lasts for 2-3 pegs with coke+lime, this is how usually teenagers get drunk in India.
Just for comparison, thats half the price of cheap beer bottle, so you can imagine. I still drink this at least one or two times per year just to remember the times and I'm out of that phase for about 10 years.rofl
But this has garnered my interest in knowing which Indian alcohol you guys think are drinkable? Please do tell, I'm yet to come across anything that I would say gets close to "good" drinkable rank and you wont bust your kidneys.lmao
it's not about taste smell, it's about how fucked up you will end after finishing a bottle. 😂
If you guys want to try great Indian rum, try and get a hold of a bottle of Amrut Two Indies. I've had Mount Gay, Bacardi White, Bacardi Black, Captain Morgan Spiced, Captain Morgan Black and a few more rums, and I can confidently say Two Indies is the best I've had.
We'll have to see if we can track that one down. Thanks for the recommendation.
there are some things only Indians understand, like how your review of this supposedly 'bad product' has the most number of views by a mile.
Nobody drinks alcohol straight out of the bottle in India. If you are living in extremely cold conditions dilute this with luke warm water, otherwise dilute it with regular. In India, it tastes best diluted with Thumbs Up and Chicken Tikka !
old monk rum and royal enfield 500 cc is dream for every Indian youth .
Dude...who finished rest of the bottle 🤔....
If same shit was sold for 300$ you might have change of mind. 😑
Jack Sparrow would have loved this Rum
it was made by a retired army major i saw it in 1985 for first time
It’s one of the best rum
It's also the lifeline of the soldiers and sailors in the Armed forces in India.
You picked the wrong bottle guys. The cheapest one tastes the Best :-)... This one is more subtle and not preferred for Sweetness. The squarish bottle... Has a more stronger and somewhat leathery .. ,( I don't know why I feel like..) but it's like a smell that you get from new leather jacket. You must taste that once. Though over the last decade i have felt old monk has become sweeter.
India's proud ..Old monk
This is goto college/uni drink for students, goes well with spicy food. Perfect for student budget and quality for it's price. It's definitely niche product.
It goes for £25 in UK.
SAME OLD MONK SELLS FOR 25 EUROS IN UK.
Hi dear old monk has a legacy in India. Indian don't drink but love this old monk no marketing strategy but it's very popular in india.if you don't have old monk in your bar ,home ,party you are not a true drinker.
Drink the original one. Not the monk bottle. Just the glass bottle one. Both taste different.
Most dark rum usually add caramel or sugar to it, there's nothing new abt that.. Its a cheap rum ,preffered by people who earn around 200 dollars a month , they don't care abt the taste and quality.. They just wanna get drunk ,after a hard day at work..or by people like me ,I'm 19 year old college student and I usually drink beer or cheap rum..I can't afford to drink scotch or bourbon..
Dear Mr. Choudhary, I earn considerably more than 200 USD per month. I care about taste and quality and I would rather drink Old Monk than any other dark rum. These two blasphemous fucks could not be more wrong. Rest assured you are drinking the absolute best rum in the world.
Cheers.
Jagermiester seems to be the old monk equivalent in your country!
They certainly both have a great importance to the student population...
Suggest me a Rum better than Old Monk! Judge it against it's competitors not against fine distilled whiskey! I'd definitely try your rum suggestion!
In my opinion Appleton Estate Signature Blend is the best of the cheap entry level rums. Not as cheap as Old Monk, but very little is!
@@TheSingleMaltReview needn't be cheap! But just the best rum you've tasted!
@@chiragchetia9050 Well, that would be another Appleton Estate then, the 21 year old is consistently excellent.

Funny guys.. maybe you should just stick to beer 😁
its called "Dark nectar" in India
Its India favorite drink poor and rich both love these

No matter which restaurant you go cheapest or 5 star they will definitely have old monk
Old monk is life
Perhaps the worst review ever. This is a way superior product than you will ever imagine.
The developing country is probably the biggest emerging economy now... take care don’t judge a drink , just enjoy

Americans have Harley Davidson & Jack daniels.
But Indians have Royal Enfield & Old monk.
The real great rum. No one drinks it like the way u guys drink. Its drunk to just get high n quickly.
You can use it for killing fleas on your pets
your pets will die if u put this on them its a quick high drink this thing will act like acid on pets skin dude

So post a long gap of 9 years, tried it today and my experience was similar to yours.
And this is their most viewed video

There are other cheaper variants available for this rum...if u are finding it hard to swallow then I wonder what would happen with cheaper variants. And trust me it's really a bad rum...overly hyped
Good review. But the dislike was for your pompousness. There are so many reviewers out there for everything under the sun, but the good ones never disrespect the product.
Why are their faces so shiny? Basic mattifying powder, guys. It works wonders.

OLD MONK is the Best,
Thanks for the review. I dislike artificial flavoured liquor. Thanks for the heads up. Saved me the money. 👍🏽
Indian alcohol has ABV percentages set by the government. Hence 42.8 % abv.
Ah hah, that explains it. I wish ours had similar grantees...
@@TheSingleMaltReview we have in UK a brilliant guarantee. All Rum spiced drinks less than 40% abv cannot be called as Rum spiced drink. Simples. Because most do not use Rum. Just basic grain alcohol and Rum flavours. They have to call it just a spiced drink. By law.
This is a cult classic rum - not sure you realise the popularity of this , first choice of almost every college kid in the last tree generations. So much so that even if one made it in life you would prefer this cheap rum to anything
You have no Idea..You have to get in an Indian Engineering hostel to know what Old Monk is....You can ask all those Silicon Valley IITans who running all the Big MNCs of USA and you will get an idea.
i don't understand so its not good, nice logic
Very accurate review! Lol at all the dislikes 😄 I have drunk this stuff in India and it's truly awful stuff. It also gives you the worst possible hangover. Wouldn't be surprised if it contains methanol tbh
So cheap????? Over $30 per bottle
Old monk is always best.. I don't like another brands 😊🙏
Try kohinoor brand, you will fly
Suggestion, and no intention of offending anyone here, but you guys should stick to Single and Blended Malts as you don't have much idea of Rum. Old Monk rums are in the league of good rums, being cheap does not mean its bad. Indian rums are traditionally sweet, nothing new in that. India also uses similar spirit to make their version of "Whiskies".
Another case in point is Ron Diplimatico Exclusiva Reserva, not particularly expensive but definitely sits right up there in top 5.
