This is beautiful work, Scott. You deserve a lot more attention for your excellent work! I actually like the first three. The glow from the phaser turrets is unique and quite exciting! I love the effect!
Just to recap, the effect was achieved by rendering the phasers in two passes: Pass #1, the phasers are emitted right out of the _Constellation_ turrets, so that the beams can light up the ship and you can see the reflections of the beams on the ship's hull, but there is no extra "glow" applied to the light emitters in this pass. Pass #2 duplicates the pass #1 camera, ship, and phaser bolt movements precisely, only in this pass the starship is completely matte black (so that the ship itself blocks the viewer's view of the beams from the proper angles) against a matte black background. In other words, the phaser bolts are now the only visible things in this pass, and the only light emitters. This allowed me to turn up the glow and bloom on the phasers to make them super "hot". It was then just a matter of compositing pass #2 on top of pass #1. Thanks to the matte black starship in pass #2, whenever the _Constellation_ herself blocks your view of the phasers they're blocked, but otherwise you get the nice glowy phasers in the unified composition.
That’s a darn good question, that I have never figured out a way to visually explain with my little movies. If you think of something, let me know and maybe I will incorporate it and give you the credit for the inspiration! (and just to clarify that mumbled sentence, you will definitely get credit if I use your idea… right now the main thing I need to do is just get back to doing *anything* on this project!)
excellent. The first I have seen to use actual details from the original ship. The shading of hull plating and deflector grids all in place. Well done sir
Great job! I think it's the glow around the core of the phaser beam that really sells it. The beams don't look "drawn in." (Good thing you don't have JJ Abrams directing this, "No, no! The Enterprise needs to have a HUNDRED phasers on it and they ALL need to be firing at once!")
The beams actually are physical objects that emit light and glow. I found it gave the best result in a GPU renderer like Octane; you can actually see the beams reflected in the deflector dish, and the beams contribute to the overall lighting of the scenes.
That rapid fire barrage looks really nice. That's my personal favourite. I think the 4 beam at the end is a bit too much. That is a gorgeous model of the Constitution class. It doesn't look flat like the TOS Remastered Enterprise. The effects seem to have a bit of punch to them, a bit of weight. It looks powerful, like if you get hit by them even in a Klingon D7 you'll feel it in your teeth.
