After our house was broken into in 2018, we’ve put in tons of security. There’s a kick plate at the bottom of the front door, and the doors are solid oak. Even if the glass panels in the door are smashed most people wouldn’t be able to make it through. The next vulnerable spots would be the side or back door since both are made of glass. To help with that, there’s glass break sensors at every window and door and cameras all over the property.

04:58 Most deadbolts take seconds to pick but thats not the point. There is no such thing as a secure lock. The point of a lock is to keep honest people honest. A thief is not going to go through the trouble to pick a lock when there are faster ways to get in. Every moment they are in front of that door, they are exposed to prying eyes. You need layers of security such as cameras, a monitored security system, exterior lights, landscaping that doesn't give people places to hide, and finally having good locks, doors, and windows, properly secured. You don't have to be fort knox, you just don't want to be an easy target so that a thief will go elsewhere. One of the most common types of break ins is the 'smash and grab'. Don't keep valuables near windows where a thief doesn't even have to enter the house.
Not so. I am honest and a lock does not "keep me honest." Are you not a rapist only because rape laws keep you moral? I don't believe that. So you should fix your comment, because putting a lie in it makes the rest of your platitudes also suspect.
@@davidcovington901 There is no lie in my comment and your argument is nonsense. Why are you going on about rapists? The point of my comment is that no lock will protect you from a determined criminal, but they work well to keep out casual ones.
Most locks do not take seconds to pick. The B60 has been picked by lockpicking lawyer took 50 seconds and he is one of the best out there. Most people are going to take WAY longer. But yes, layers of security are super important. I learned about the onion concept, if you have valuables or even to create a faux saferoom is that you should add sturdy door and a good deadbolt to your bedroom / office. If you're paranoid add a lock to your closet door. All your points are valid, get a good monitored security system, landscaping that doesn't give places to hide. Secure all your other entryways. If you do a fraction of that, most thieves will go elsewhere unless you're targeted.
@@Lam I have been picking locks for 20 years. Even raking, it takes seconds to open most DEADBOLTS. Note a deadbolt is not every worlds hardest lock your example is thinking of. It's a 5 to 6 pin lock with a few security pins. And raking is slow compared to rattle tools. But you're really splitting hairs in your argument and you're not even arguing the same thing I am. I said deadbolts are easy to pick, and you're talking about high security locks which are NOT deadbolts you would find in most houses. But the whole argument is moot because as I said, a thief is not going to go through the trouble to pick your lock. And any lock is not going to stop a determined criminal. You can put the worlds most secure lock on a door, and they can attack the lock physically. If you reinforce the lock, they can attack the door. If you reinforce the door they can attack the frame. If you reinforce the frame they can go through a window, or another door, or the wall, or the ceiling.
@@davidcovington901Nobody but you is talking about rapists and your response doesn't make any sense. You completely missed the point. A lock will not stop a determined thief and that is not what the point of a lock is. The point of a lock is to disincentivize casual crime and to remind the curious that they have no right to enter.

Love this channel and these deep dives! We sometimes forget that most day-to-day crime is spontaneous & opportunistic, and often committed by desperate people; some of the best ways of preventing local crime is by removing the immediate opportunities and engaging with community support programmes. Some people don't discuss these topics because they worry it will inspire more crime, but imo the opposite is true by spreading knowledge of the existence of common preventatives to both the victims and criminals alike.
Security doors are quite common in my part of the world. You will not get thru the door itself without firefighter/swat/military grade equipment and when the door is closed it has bolts going into the frame (which is made of steel) from all directions. You are simply not getting in by human force. Also our locks are way better than the garbage you can get at home depot / walmart but they can still be picked by a professional. Lesser locks can be "bumped" in a matter of seconds. So have a way to secure the door from the inside that is independent of the lock (or "jam" the locking mechanism in the locked position). Windows are a weakspot, but they can be switched out for better ones. A good alarmsystem with motion detectors and cameras that sees the "bad guy" before he even gets to the door is also a must have. Apart from that, a big dog and a gun are more or less self explanatory and a must have.
For our front door, our deadbolt is set up high (just above eye level) and both it and the door latch have 3 inch screws anchoring to the actual frame. This spreads the force so the kick effort is much harder. There's also a stainless plate around the door knob because someone unsuccessfully tried to crowbar their way in. Pretty sure they didn't try the windows because the back ones have a cage around them to keep the cats in and the other ones are in direct view of the road.
Houses in North America are on average just flimsy against break-ins is what I have learned. Might have to move my independent business overseas I guess
Great video with an amazingly well detailed article on your website. Read the whole thing and the level of details is fantastic. In Australia our houses have very low building standards, this article was a wealth of knowledge to improve home security for a very small investment. Having a home broken into isn't just a monetary loss, it's a violation of your space
Really appreciate it especially the comment about the article! It was a labor of love and I'm still not finished with it. It certainly is a violation and I don't want more people suffering when upgrades are easy to do. I am all for responsible firearm use. I have seen a lot of cases where someone is breaking into homes and they don't care if someone is there or not
Very great testing! The window films are an interesting product since most doors on American homes have a glass window right next to them. Reinforcing them without effecting visibility from the inside and aesthetic is a must.
I have worked as a maintenance guy, basically it's depending on how much are you willing to spend, of course there are harder window and thief proof, but of course it's going to be more expensive, the same with locks, always invest in your security
I have the Medeco deadbolts. Got them from a locksmith. Obviously that's not goingo to help with kicking the door down. The wooden frame is garbage. Oh and once time I got locked out on the deck with no way to get down and ended up smashing the double pane window. More difficult to smash it than I would have thought but all the glass fell cleanly onto the floor enough to where I could get back inside without injury.

Reinforced strike plates and shielded deadbolts with security pins will keep out pretty much every opportunist thief and burglar. However, for targeted attacks - do note that the easiest entry for a freestanding single occupancy home could be the walls itself. It's just exterior cladding, dimensional lumber, insulation, and interior gypsum walls between you and outside.

This video boggles my non-american mind, I've never seen a front door without a "strike plate" and a much stronger frame all-around (it's usually just a metal frame over here). Even some internal room doors have better framing and strength than the one you showed.
Omg please clip that poor lav mic to your shirt and leave it alone!!!
Oh, americans. In Europe doors open outwards, and locks are integraded in doors. Thieves are also smarter in Europe, i guess

Now go to a german home and try kicking in the door 🤨
When Canada doesn’t seem so safe
