Creaks Review - The Final Verdict

  • As an indie puzzle game, Creaks makes a surprisingly successful transition from mobile to consoles. While its story seems to want to tell something a lot bigger than it ultimately does, the puzzles are rewarding and challenging enough to keep you engaged without being irritating.
    Its level and character designs, despite feeling like they could’ve implemented more interplay between enemies, are impressively diverse and thoroughly explored, especially in its more challenging puzzles, and the paintings that break up the time between puzzles are highlights in themselves. Even through its flaws, Creaks is one of those games that I didn’t want to put down because I felt its mobile “one more puzzle” influences, which is how it succeeds in most of what it sets out to do.

    When not consumed in one sitting, the recurrent enemies are not as bad as it's depicted here. Having played the game over the course of about 2 weeks, it's a wonderful world I loved to return to every time.
    The soundtrack is also noteworthy. Also check out the Hidden Orchestra - Wingbeats and Night Walks albums before or after playing.

    • @jamesoberry2227

      Laurel Reef I haven’t played Creaks yet, but Amanita’s other stuff are traditional style point and click adventure games

      James O’Berry....you’re in for a real treat with Creaks. I was so sad when the game ended.
      Machinarium seems to be such a well loved game, but have to admit, the fact that it’s a point and click puts me off a little. I’ve heard that there are puzzles, but not sure to what extent. After horror, puzzle games are are my next favourite genre, so would definitely give it a try if I knew it was a predominately a puzzle game.

      It's certainly more straightforward than Machinarium -- everything you need will be clear and will be on the same screen as you. And for me, it was also much more fun than Machinarium.

    • @azuregiant9258

      David King, relaxing is the key word. I’m playing this game today, eating birthday chocolates, wrapped in a blanket and letting the grey clouds do their thing outside. Interesting piece of trivia about the music as well.

    Other than the paintings, it looks like every puzzle is just repetitive. How many times can you run back and forth, go up and down the ladder, to escape a desk? The whole game apparently.

    • @fashnek
      @fashnek Год назад

      As the review said, every single puzzle is distinct. The mechanics are used in unique ways. This is the mark of a great puzzle game design. If you need to teach the player 40 things for 50 puzzles, you have a sparse and flat game.
