  • Today on JD Cars we will be replacing the worn out clutch and converting to a single mass flywheel on the BMW E90 (328i). This job was certainly overwhelming at first, but breaking it down into steps made it much more manageable. I successfully completed the job in a weekend and I would certainly say it was well worth doing it myself. Thank you to Bavarian Autosport for making this project possible! Thank you for this video. Now I see why my garages have estimated this repair job at $2900 to put on OEM parts, keeping the dual mass flywheel. Both the two garages I use would NOT convert it to a single mass flywheel. Both said they either can't get the kits from their part supplies or don't recommend it because it changes so much how the car feels and drives. I had received a quote of around $1800 for a conversion job. Either way, watching this video makes me realize WHY it's such a big job and why it costs so much either way. Thank the Lord for mechanics who can do jobs like this! Talk about overwhelming to someone who doesn't do this kind of work! BTW: my plan is to drive my car as is another 6-12 months then trade it in. It has almost 150,000 miles on it and it still looks very sharp, like this car in this video. But part of me is afraid if I do this job, what else will go wrong? car is old...even BMW's wear out.

      Thank you for your thoughtful comment, Erik! This really is one hell of a job, especially at home. The labor cost is no rip off 😅 Your plan to trade in is likely the most financially responsible. The clutch doesn't feel TOO gone, does it?

      I did the valve cover gasket about a year ago and felt the same. To be honest it's very easy! you're not actually doing anything technical on that job, just removing like 70 bolts! The hardest part is getting the gasket to stay in place when you put the cover on. I used a little RTV dabs in a couple spots and that worked great.

  • @dequan339
    @dequan339 5 лет назад

    I did this on my E81 took me two days with a friend to help, but in using a single mass flywheel I start to experience vibrations when driving in low gear. The dual clutch didn’t have any vibration but when i switch to a single mass flywheel thats when I experience the vibration. The clutch feel better with the single mass, but its a small one when trying to accelerate from lets say 30mph or when going up a steep hill. So there’s pro and cons.

    • @JDCarsChannel
      @JDCarsChannel  4 года назад

      Huh.. that’s interesting. I didn’t experience any vibrations at any speed after converting to a single mass flywheel. Maybe your new clutch needs to be broken in?!

    • @csutakgergo5279

      I have the valeo SMF too. No vibrations at all. Flywheel adaptations relearn helped a lot on the throttle feel. Although there is a verry specific procedure, to do it properly. My only friends who dont like the smf are the ones that cant operate a clutch smoothly(i.e.cant drive). Also drilling out the restriction of the plastic clutch delay valve, helped a lot :)

  • @31acruz
    @31acruz Год назад +1

    Converting away form a dual mass self-adjusting fly wheel, loses the ability of the engine to keep the rpm's high during hard driving. The momentum of that heavier flywheel keeps it spinning longer and you can take your sweet time shifting and you don't lose a second of power, feels like the engine its always ready to fight, ready for the next punch/shift. With the lighter flywheels you lose all that, you also lose the plush smooth engagement. Nobody told me that, I had to experience it for myself to realize what a mistake it was to go single mass. I went back. There are better ways to gain horsepower without destroying the joy of driving the car.

  • @31acruz
    @31acruz Год назад

    Let me ask you, you tilted the transmission while it was still attached to the engine but did not loosen the engine mounts to allow the engine to move with the transmission. Did that cause you any problems?

    I'm not sure where you took the aluminium bolts (transmission-engine) torque values from, but BMW TIS gives slightly different values. M12 aluminium bolts (E18 E-torx) should be tightened to 18.5 ft/lbs, plus additional 130° +20° turns on an angular torque gauge. M10 aluminium bolt (E14 E-torx) - 14.75 ft/lbs, plus additional 180° to 200° turn on an angular torque gauge.

  • @TechnicalLee
    @TechnicalLee 3 года назад

    FYI never jack up on the car body like that while it's on the lift. When the front lifted off, you transferred the load to the rear arms and likely overloaded them (the rear arms can only hold 3000 lbs max). All 4 pads on the lift must stay in contact with the vehicle at all times so the load is distributed and the arms can't move. The pivot locks saved your ass because the car would have wanted to pivot them rearwards and would have fallen off the arms on top of you. Also never lift a car without the rubber pads on the lift arms, they are there so the car doesn't slide off the arms. I think you've repositioned the lifts since this so the arms reach properly, but be careful.

    • @breezybadger2676
      @breezybadger2676 3 года назад

      It's happening because of the staggered tyres. The rear is higher off the ground than the front, so the front arms will obviously make contact with the car before the rear arms. At no point was there a larger than normal percentage of the car's weight on the rear arms. Until the rear arms made contact, the rear was supported by the rear wheels on the ground.

      I was looking for something relatively inexpensive... found this listed for $5200. I also wanted something very common to make finding replacement parts as easy as possible. I saw the black on black 6 speed and jumped on the deal. I don't regret it in the slightest bit.

    Heard that the dual mass - solid mass flywheel conversion creates issues with the crankshaft. Is this true? I have a e90 325i n53 3.0L and cant find a kit for this..

      Just did a change of the whole kit, and the new had the exact same play as the old, and like the one in the vid. Petrol cars don't usually fuck up the flywheel, specially 6 cylinder engines.

    Isn't Valeo the OEM brand? I mean the car came from the factory with a Valeo clutch.

      Yes Valeo is the OEM brand, but this is not an OEM setup. This kit converts the car to a single mass flywheel.

    Also, at the end you are comparing an "old worn" out broken Dual mass Fly wheel set up to a brand-new single mass wheel set up, not fair. Had you installed both you could compare but you didn't, right now you only know what the single mass feels like when the parts are new. Still enjoyable but not as much you lose things you only feel when you experience the dual mass otherwise you don't know they even exist.

    Yeah, make sure to clean the protective coating off the flywheel and pressure plate mating surfaces with rubbing alcohol, brake cleaner, or other anti-grease cleaner. The protective coatings that are applied at the factory prevent rusting, and must be cleaned otherwise the brand new clutch will be destroyed immediately. At 17:00 "JD" left lots of greasy prints on the new flywheel and clearly didn't clean either the new flywheel nor the pressure plate surface. I'm guessing this car required an actually competent mechanic to re-do this clearly half-assed job displayed in this video.
