I’m in my 46th year playing and singing around Seattle in clubs. I had a job too but I still rock and I’m as good as ever at 70! Stay limber, keep movin and keep rockin !
For the fans it's sometimes emotional and painful to watch the performers we grew up with play live but we still go to the shows to support them and mark things off our bucket list. Each time their voice wavers or can't hit the note it's not so much disappointing as it is a reminder of what's happening to us and our own mortality. We didn't mind too much when they were too drunk or stoned to make the music sound like the record when they were young it was exciting just to be there and that feeling still exists. It's an event that you share with your partner and friends and remember all the crazy crap that happened at the shows when we were younger too. My wife and I when to see Tom Petty because we expected that to be our last chance to see him and sure enough it was.
@@Suzanimal_316 It was fantastic. Half way through we got rained on but everyone stayed while the band took a break and when the rain stopped they came back out and rocked the place again. I wrote a song about the trip. Check out “Going To See Petty” by Frank Coffey on RUclips. In the song I also describe the time I saw him in the 90s in Dallas. That was when the stage had the big tree and the steamer trunk.
I am a muso, and singer and one thing is for sure, you lose perfect pitch, don't care what anyone says they all struggle and you can hear it in their voices, from JB to Paul McCartney , voices gone, I am still tossing up whether to spend $300 to see JB on a Tuesday night here in Perth Aussie and listen to his cracked voice
I saw JT and Jackson last summer and was beyond impressed at how wonderful they both sounded. Last month I saw Johnny Mathis. He is 87, travels with a full orchestra and his voice is unchanged. Two weeks ago I saw Diana Ross. Her voice was better than I expected, though she gets lots of help from her background singers. However, her ability to wrap an audience around her finger and the love fest that ensues was so much fun to witness.

Some of these older performers can still knock it out of the park. Bravo! Unfortunately, many of them can no longer deliver a reasonable facsimile of what they used to be and they should recognize this.
When you see someone in concert at 15 years old...you run with them. Loved them then, love them now. My kids grew up listening, they know the music. Keep on playing!
I am inspired by Danny K. giving his take on why musicians keep going. Getting older hurts , your hands really start to complain, but at least your heart feels good. I feel that vibe of wanting to play. As anyone who has hit sixty knows, you only have your will to support doing things. Music is one of those things.
Some of my favorite musicians. Still love hearing them, seeing them. They have and continue to enrich my life with their music. So many amazing memories attached to the music. I have deep gratitude that they have followed their hearts and are teaching us the same by still creating. Thank you.🙏🎶🤍

Music ! It's in these guys' blood and DNA ! Living ,breathing ,playing ,composing ,doing ,entertaining ,enjoying and loving and practising ! That's the essence of Music for me ! Oh ,and I forgot to mention pedigree ! That's what I mean by being in the blood .
I'm just an avid recreational player and as I approach 70 years of age I can totally relate to the "about to make a breakthrough" comment. The search for improvement never gets old. It remains exciting and fun and as I see it, it helps to keep me sharp mentally,.

At 68 years of a age, and at the top of my game after working with digital color and design for 39 years I complete identify with what you all had to say. If the creative spark in you is still a force to be reckoned with, the power and meaning of what you choose to create only grows exponentially. You made my day!
I have been a guitar player since 1974 I always loved James Taylor and Carole King on my finger style guitarist Chyna play like Chad Atkins but nowhere near as good but it’s true I play what I want to play because I don’t want to waste my time I’m not getting any younger and I want to enjoy my music I love playing guitar it’s my companion and my best friend but people like James Taylor and Carole King were a great contribute to society I love all my 60s and 70s rock and rollers I listen to this kind of music all the time and it’s a lot of what I play now pretty close to 70 and still playing I get a lot of pleasure out of it and if you don’t keep doing it has a say if you snooze you lose yes I’m a old Rock and roller soft rock I love some hard rock I love to but I will keep playing until I can’t play anymore by that time I will be long gone from this world but I want to say thank you you guys were great and steel lower and Jackson Browne you did a lot of work with the Eagles and you were also a very talented man love you all and still listen to you all to this day👍🏼👍🏼🎼🎶🎸💖❤️😅
My ear bends to a well crafted song, a catchy hook, an unexpected lift and a great groove. All of these cats in the Wrecking Crew and the Immediate Family and the people they played with have been living rent free in my little brain since the 60's. Thanks to Danny Tedesco for making the Wrecking Crew movie as well as The Immediate Family movie project. My personal connection was getting a chance to meet the infamous Leland Sklar during a tour supporting Judith Owen. It was a master class in performance! The only question I have is will there be a limited run on bowling ball shirts! I am in possession of a Wrecking Crew shirt!
Danny Korchmar is absurdly underrated: fell in love with his live playing with James and Carole on the 2007 "Live at the Troubadour" album. Great collection of musicians that have stood by those two legends.
Why should you be less creative at 70 then you were at 22? You’ve got so much more to work with now. I’m still making discoveries every day. Yes, some things may be more difficult physically, but how much does that matter? Many younger guitar players are incredible technicians, but they aren’t all that good because they are ONLY technicians.
Trumpet player Doc Severinsen just played his last and final concert at Age 95! Will he stop playing the trumpet? Never! I believe he will play as long as he can lift the trumpet to his face! I believe it is the trumpet that enabled Doc Severinsen to live so many years. I remember hearing Frank Sinatra sing in his 70s; it was his best singing ever! As we age we become part of the music! We perform for the love of the music.
Great clip. Been playing live for over 30 years and am just as driven as I was in my 20's but way more focused on what matters and doing music I love to do on this side of raising kids.
This goes for anything in life. If you love it, you just get better and deeper. I was nursed after an operation by a 65 year old nurse and his abilities as a healer were extraordinary.
Carole ans Jacksonn both right . I Never thought I'd be this old and what happens is much more profoumd. It all means so much more. It is a calling abd you just do what matters, you don't quit, you do what you have to do for just one more precious moment.

Well Jackson.... a lot of us have played gigs for 50 years in addition to having a day job. They are not mutually exclusive. In fact, for most musicians, having a day job is a good idea, in light of the craziness of the music business. The stability of having a day job, means not being at the mercy of the sharks in the music business. Remember that 99% of dedicated musicians are not famous people. Yes, we do it because we love it.
These cats are all very cool and influential... But it's a different world now. Can you imagine a seventeen-year-old pounding out "Up On The Roof?" Or a junkie creating "Mud Slide Slim?" (with Kootch) Or some kid hanging with Glen Frey writing "Taking It Easy?" Times are different. The music industry has dissolved into a puddle of sh$t.. Bless the sixty survivors. Love 'em all. Peace on earth.
My musical hobby never really took off in the early 90s. I play guitar. I was NEVER good with people & that's what it takes to play in a band. After having some bad experiences & letting doors close, it bothered me for awhile. But as i got older, i just let it go so i could move on in life. Nowadays I still enjoy playing & learning chords on my own whenever I have time. My oldest son recently is learning to play guitar. I told him from my experience if he ever wants to be in band is to try to get along with people. It's always good to be a great player & practice but the main thing is it's about being around people too, if a person is heading in that direction. If a person is a one man band, well that's a completely different situation.
Like elite athletes, musical performers all have a "sweet spot" in their lives. These are wonderful times for them and for us, but like matter itself, they fade and die.
I disagree. I was a serious jazz player for 50 years. I taught at the prestigious Berklee College and studied with the world famous vibist Gary Burton. My hands developed tremors and I simply could not trust my technique any more. My teacher, Gary, had a small stroke which caused him to lose a lot of the musical skill he needed to perform at a professional level. Both of us stopped playing at about the same time and now lead happy fulfilling "post-playing" lives. Some players can go on forever, but some give it up like - Rihanna, Bon Jovie, and jazz great Stan Levey
I think ageing artists must become more health conscious and perform hormonal replacement and exercise, as this may give them an unexpected second life.
I mean I guess yinz could use crayons and color something nice til it’s time to sing again and who is singing while they are coloring probably the kid that said he quit 😂
Some of these guys have lost some mental acuity. The ones that have it mentally really do sound good. I thought Carole was great on tour with James recently.
I tend to disagree. Just like JT said on his album Flag, "The job takes a young man." Not that I don't love them playing i to old age, but there's something about a young, hungry artist that can glean out the gold.
There are certain songs an 80 year old singer songwriter should stay away from. For example a chanced upon a video on RUclips of Paul McCartney and Chrissy Hynde singing “ Oh Darling” now… Paul’s vocal acrobatics on the Abbey Road Album with that song were extraordinary it damn near ruined his voice then ! So along he comes live at Wembly attempting it at age 80 ! Needless to say I was so embarrassed for him I had to click away. Nothing against Paul but he just doesn’t have that voice at 80 anymore.
I don't want to see this generation of musicians go 🥲 They've contributed so much to music and to this world that I don't feel we're up to the task of taking over, and that scares me. We as the younger generations need to ensure that their work stand the test of time.
Browne is still my all time fav.
He has more energy to play live than i do to listen .

It's kind of heartbreaking seeing your hero's aging but... Hell I'm aging too & fast 😆 lol. But the music lives forever.

I disagree. I was a serious jazz player for 50 years. I taught at the prestigious Berklee College and studied with the world famous vibist Gary Burton. My hands developed tremors and I simply could not trust my technique any more. My teacher, Gary, had a small stroke which caused him to lose a lot of the musical skill he needed to perform at a professional level. Both of us stopped playing at about the same time and now lead happy fulfilling "post-playing" lives. Some players can go on forever, but some give it up like - Rihanna, Bon Jovie, and jazz great Stan Levey

I see zero point in ageism, re musicians. Artist develop, as the get older. Simple.
I think ageing artists must become more health conscious and perform hormonal replacement and exercise, as this may give them an unexpected second life.
I mean I guess yinz could use crayons and color something nice til it’s time to sing again and who is singing while they are coloring probably the kid that said he quit 😂
Some of these guys have lost some mental acuity. The ones that have it mentally really do sound good. I thought Carole was great on tour with James recently.
I tend to disagree. Just like JT said on his album Flag, "The job takes a young man." Not that I don't love them playing i to old age, but there's something about a young, hungry artist that can glean out the gold.
I see both sides. Young and old. They all bring something.

There are certain songs an 80 year old singer songwriter should stay away from. For example a chanced upon a video on RUclips of Paul McCartney and Chrissy Hynde singing “ Oh Darling” now… Paul’s vocal acrobatics on the Abbey Road Album with that song were extraordinary it damn near ruined his voice then ! So along he comes live at Wembly attempting it at age 80 ! Needless to say I was so embarrassed for him I had to click away. Nothing against Paul but he just doesn’t have that voice at 80 anymore.
Imagine playing the same set of songs again and again, not that cool.
