I just stumbled across this video. I worked at the Honda motorcycle plant in Marysville Ohio from 1992-2009. I was the paint repair guy most of those years. That was such a cool bike and so much hype went in to producing it. The motorcycle plant was very small compared to the car plant next door and the people I worked with who built the Rune took a great deal of pride in every bike we sent out the door to our customers. I retired from Honda in early 2018 but it warms my heart to see someone appreciate the work we put in to make those amazing bikes.

Cool story. I just got into motorcycle sales and parts and accessories but I was in automotive production for 12 years. American manufacturing went down hill thanks to job bouncers and outsourcing. Japanese company pay people a tradesman pay and respect your efforts. In American you are a number just show up or else. I took pride in what I did also and wanted to get people a quality product. I was in welding all the way to supervision. Just wanted to share with you I liked reading your back story. Love me some Hondas I’ve had their bikes and still daily my 99 civic lx.

@@ElementofKindness These were said to have cost Honda 100k each when they were made just to be sold for around the 25k price point. If that's actually true Honda made a big mistake and lost a TON of money with this bike. When just looking at the selling price it seems like a lot of bike for the money but not when you see what they cost to make. Not sure why they thought that was a good idea for a bike that didnt last long. Honestly I dont think they looked great, big bike with not a ton of power. They have more of a following now because you never see them.

@@berube361 It wasn't about making a good business decision it was about making a statement, honda had come up with the idea of the a true show quality high performance bike in the 90s called the Honda Zodia but it never made production because of many internal struggles with design and the corporate office, corporate didn't want to lose money because it's a business and that ultimately ended the Zodia concept, fast forward to early 2000s and Honda bikes weren't selling well and the company wanted a statement piece and that is where the Rune came in, R&D was given blank checks and told make it better than anything else on the road And they did just that.

I'm in Canada and I remember when my buddy bought a burgundy Rune. It was 2009 and he found an '04 in Arizona. He bought it from photos and would show us daily on his Blackberry(!) as it traveled across the US and into Canada. When we saw it in real life it was simply awe-inspiring. I had the good fortune to take it for a spin and I still get shivers remembering that day. Later that year, a group of 9 of us (many on big, comfy Harley baggers) including the Rune headed from Toronto to Savannah and back (via the Blue Ridge). I remember vividly watching my buddy ride for mile after mile with a giant grin, and not once (NOT ONCE) shifting in his seat to get more comfortable. Unfortunately he gave up riding a few years later and sold the Rune. But man...for the brief time it was in our lives it was something to behold!

Ah, your makin me feel all nostalgic (and old)! 😂 Spent my first 3 years out of high school workin at a tier 5 Honda dealership, during 2005-2008, and although I didn't own the place like you, I did have the fortunate perks of the sales manager really liking me and letting me take out any bikes I wanted off the floor whenever. Took our first Rune we ever got out one night, it was the '05. One of the funniest cruisers I ever got to ride. I'm 5'6" and average around 130-140, so I'm sure that influenced me a lot, but I really thought it was a lot more comfortable and smooth than all the Goldwings I ever took out, and I rode a shit-ton of Goldwings. And yes, being a short skinny kid that usually rode CBR600/1000s, I'm sure I looked as goofy on those things as I felt lol

It reminds me of an old front end from the 1920’s that married a cyborg. I’m in heaven just thinking about what that must have felt like to have that beast underneath you behaving itself and doing what it’s told to do. It’s an animal and I’m in love. Only problem, I’m about 18,000 bucks short in my bike fund. Bummer!!

4:05 Rune warps to another dimension! Damn, that thing pulls like a freight train.😮 What a gorgeous piece of technology! Way ahead of it's time as far as the design. I didn't really care for them when they first came out, but the passage of time shows just how brilliant Honda's design team is.😉 I had a '78 Goldwing for a few years, and even the GL1000's had gut-wrenching torque (if you didn't have them loaded down with luggage and a full fairing). I can only imagine what these were like with 2 more cylinders and 1832cc's.😁👍

The Honda Rune's suspension in the front specifically, is a follow linkage which is by far THE best suspension, what it does basically is move the front tire backwards after hitting a bump so the forks can do less work which makes it really smooth smoother than anything else even today's bike's honestly

Beautiful bike, bought one for my friend in Poland few years ago. I paid 27 k for a bike with less than thousand miles on the clock. The cost of design and production of each of Rune was around 100 K, Honda obviously couldn't charge that much so they put that in the prices of parts. Super expensive bike to crash and repair. This thing is beautiful ugly. I love it! A buddy of mine owned two! They made two different looks/models and his second has a back seat and some different lines making it look long and drawn out like a train. They are wicked fast, and he easily kept up with decent riders on liter bikes and dove into tight mountain turns with 600’s. I was a bit better rider and on a modded 636 so I could lose just about anyone in the tights but he was with the leaders of the pack following. I tried it out on some open road and loose turns and found it to be super stiff and responsive and it felt amazing leaning it over until the peg feelers hit the ground even at relatively low speeds.

Man If I could, I would come down there and purchase that today. This maybe my favorite looking cruiser I have seen. Nice machine! Anyone know why Honda only made a limited number of these? Yes Sean, you may want to keep that one!

It IS smoother than the goldwing! The front wheel being pushed behind the fork like that improves stability.

Almost bought a Valkrie but don't think I could get use to the style of the Rune. Love that flat 6 though, just not sure my legs would like the position being that I'm 6'6. IDK

I just bought a black 2004 with 8K miles June 28th 2024. My bike will be delivered around July 7.
I've watched this video probably 7 times now and I just this time I fell in love with the tan seats.
    Who makes this seat?

I love motorcycles. I'm a big Harley Davidson fan and a Can Am Spyder fan. I want a Can Am Spyder RT Limited which is the top of the line Can Am Spyder. It's a semi-automatic transmission which means that you shift the gears with your thumb and no clutch. You shift up and it will automatically downshift or you can downshift yourself. I'd get it with heated grips and Sirius XM Satellite radio with hands-free bluetooth. Georgia became a hands-free state on July 1, 2018. The law states that drivers cannot have a phone in their hand or support it by any part of their body while driving. The reason why is because even though we had a no texting while driving law since July 1, 2010, nobody would comply with that law. The insurance institute read an article back in February of 2018 where if you are just talking on your phone with the phone to your ear while driving, your chances of being in a crash increase really quickly.
Penalties for breaking the hands-free law
    1. Warning
    2. $50 fine and 1 point on your license
    3. $100 and 2 points on license
    4. $150 and 3 points
If the second and third offense happens, you can go to court and show that you purchased a hands-free device and the charges will be dropped. If you receive 15 points within a 2 year period, you'll have a suspension on your driver's license. Your responsibility is driving your vehicle and not messing with your phone. If you have a bluetooth device like an earpiece, smartwatch, or have the bluetooth working through your vehicle's stereo system, you are allowed to use those devices while you drive. Distracted driving is killing our people on the roadway. Driving is not the number 1 thing in the car, anymore. It's messing with a phone or watching a video on your phone, instagramming, skyping, and texting. Sadly between the ages of 15 and 25, there is a huge number that have been involved in accidents and many of them are very serious. You cannot record videos or use any app that involves social media like Facebook, RUclips, and Twitter. Music streaming apps that have video content as well as music are not legal because the hands-free law prohibits watching videos.

The foot and bars positioning reminds me of my Mega Moto/ Monster moto 212 mini bike. (Coleman just bought out the rest of their frames) very comfy on the trail. As good as a full suspension bike, if you scoot up a couple inches forward

Less than a year ago Asheboro Honda (Asheboro NC) had two of them for sale. If I remember correctly they were in the 20-25k range. Pictures don't do justice. The design details and overall fit and finish have to be seen in person.

Hi Sean and Craig, Thanks for showing us the Rune and taking us for a Ride. I think if I was able to afford one, I would keep it covered in the Garage. I would keep it running Great and perfectly clean. Then I would just wait on it to keep going up in Value. I bet it becomes a real collectors item some day. As always, Thank You for the Words of Wisdom. I really need to get in the Habit of saying a Prayer before I Ride. Or just reading a Bible Verse before I ride to Educate myself more about the Bible.👍👍

I believe the Honda Rune was created at a loss to make a statement and press a thumb into the eye of Harley and let the world know they build formidable bikes. This is my unbiased opinion. I own a Fatboy Lo and a Yamaha Vstar 1100 . The Rune is a crazy nice bike for sure!!
