I understood he was not able to come up with material for DIO's new stuff, not that he couldnt play it.. his style is more in line with vivian than black sabbath. Just like lynch and ozzy, some guys are best doing their own thing and sound horrible playing other peoples music. these days there are 10yr old girls in thailand playing steve vai better than steve lol- but they could never write/create the stuff in the first place.
The elusive Warren DeMartini speaks. Wish he would get out and play before times up...
Totally agree, love to see Warren out playing live again. What would be cool is if he did a joint tour with Jake E Lee and George Lynch. Share backing band, do a 20 min set each, then all three out for the encores......an 80s shred G3 sort of thing. I'd lay down serious money to see that.
@@dalenicholas1984 Same! Excellent idea!
The sheer impact that VanHalen had on guitarist, guitar gear, bands, and rock/pop culture at that time can not be overstated - total game changer!
Indeed
Randy Rhoads was/is my all time favorite guitarist. Their styles are completely different… that said; Eddie imho is the most influential guitarist ever! He totally deserves all the GOAT accolades as he revolutionized guitar playing! I was 14 when VH1 came out and Jamie’s crying was the first time I heard that “ brown sound” Thanks Eddie 🫡
@@Kenneth-nVA agreed - I also love Randy Rhoads too!
Eddie was and is the King...
I thought Carlos and Warren were great. Carlos is awesome.
Warren's always seemed like the best dude.
Never knew about Warren almost joining Dio...that's crazy! I know they have different styles but I would love to hear something they collaborated on
Met him in ‘84 on out of the cellar tour..they opened for billy squire,..my friend worked security and gave me his orange security jacket and said go to the loading dock and tell the guy at door Chris told you to watch the dock, I did and got back,..trucks, gear, rockers,..then I see warren and go up to him talk for a minute and got autograph,..follow him into backstage room where Stephen is with many girls, Juan was blow drying his hair and lots of people and partying...stayed a few minutes then got busted, physically removed and threatened to call police on me and what I did...lucky just thrown out,...sat in parking lot for billy squire waiting for my friends and to gleefully tell them my fantastic story....would do it again in a second
The Metal Community was in fine form that fateful day.
Warren has always seemed like the level headed good guy in Ratt, and the best player of course. Robbin also, by everyone's account I've ever read, heard, was a gem of a guy. The '80's got him, Warren survived thank God. Blotzer seems like an absolute tool. Least we have their music, which was damn good at times.
Warren was always the quiet one and stayed out of trouble. That's why most fans view him as the "good guy" in the band. But over the years of turmoil and hearing stories form different members. I think Warren was just as much of a problem as anybody. He had his own ego, and wanted things done his way or the highway. There was BS all around, fans will just be biased toward who they like best. But as you said, at least the records and legacy are there to enjoy.
I met Robbin at a club called Bogart's in Cincinnati back in the late 80s. He was indeed a nice guy. The strange thing was , we did not talk about music at all . He found out I was a single A minor league baseball player and he wanted to talk about that lol. I think he would have traded places with me and I certainly would have traded places with him. He was really cool and kind of a giant up close. I am 6 feet 3 and he was much larger than me
@@Cincinnatus1869 I met Robin and Warren at a club in NC back in 86 right after their arena show..He was a big guy lol..man we were all young
.. that whole late 70s/early 80s SoCal Guitar scene is fascinating.
Japanese Charvels were awesome at that time.
I hear Ya! I just Bought a Very Very Good Condition 1986-1987 Charvel Model 1!!!!
Warren is the real deal. Awesome player and a really nice guy! \m/
Aways great to hear warren news
Warren's playing found his personality after "Dancing Undercover" with a more blues/ infused style for "Detonator" or "Ratt" from '99. The first albums from Ratt, especially ""Out Of The Cellar" it's like listening Eddie himself LOL.
The riffs are heavier, or maybe the twin guitars with Crosby gave them that Judas Priest european heavy feeling, but the soloing is absolutely Eddie Van Halen.
Warren plays nothing like Eddie...he never has right handed tapped in any ratt song ...
@@davida6889
So?
Only tapping is not being evh.
Another example, the true master of the rock tremolo is brad gillis. Not evh even though he helped in making the floyd trem. Brad DOMINATES the trem bar. Period.
Way cool jr is kiler
@@daveg4236 Agreed on "Way Cool Jr."! "Reach From The Sky" is a mediocre album but Warren's guitar work it's as his finest ironically. Same with "Ratt" from 99. Warren's work saved the album from a catastrophe.
Love hearing stories like this. EVH was king. I always put him at the top. I’m a drummer yet I studied and followed everything about Eddie. And Alex. Every guitar detail. Pedals. Bradshaw rack. Amps. Floyd rose. Wax pot pickup. . Windings of string for the old strat tremolo so it would stay in tune. Boiled strings. Amp mods. Pickup mods. D-Tuna. Steinberger. Trans trem. Parker fly. Finger tapping. Noises. Fret scrapes. Harmonics. Elephant sounds. Harmonizer. Don Landee. Ted Templeman. 5150 studio. The never materialized “Me Wise Magic” song style that would have kicked progressive rock ass if not for being killed in late 1990’s. . The Sony wireless system. Saldano. Peavey. Music man. Boogie Bodies and Sam Dimas Way. The “Summer Nights” finger pluck steinberger song. Makita Drill. The weird arched over hand fast picking via bird finger. Even VH 3 had some killer guitar gems despite not being as successful. I mean damn…”A Year To The Day”. “Josephina”. “Ballot Or The Bullet”. Recording techniques. Pedals. The Bomb. The Lamborghinis. Smoke rings. Surfer pants. Cathedral. Eruption. Mean Street slap guitar. Spanish Fly. Just an iconic ground breaking innovative legend of a hero. There is nothing left in the world of electric guitar to now look forward to. It’s all been done. RIP EVH
There are apparently a lot of us out there - I understand every sentence in full detail - I could have been somebody if I’d studied my conventional books like I did the Great One and his body of work - getting old is rough, but what a magical time it was to be a teenager in 78-79 when VH was breaking thru…I doubt anything like that will ever happen again.
✨Growing up in the 80s...
Was the BEST....‼️💚
Kinda miss those golden days✨😔
Anen to that!! We were lucky to be teens in those days.🤘🏽
Right on brother.
I play a Charvel because of these gentlemen. Great Co. the roc doc The Charvel Gang is an excellent watch. Thankyou Wayne/ Grover, for making a killer S Calif sounding guitar
It was like a sign from above , to share EVH ‘s spotlight! Great story!
Warren is a class act. I wish him the best.
A great time in music and my life. Lynch was my favorite and still is but EVH and Warren were close
Great stories!!! That he talks about the seconds and buying them. I’ve never heard anybody else mention that but myself. There was a guy in Pasadena ….Lee Who used to sell them and I used to go over his house all the time as I was a guitar tech for a few bands that played on the strip. Also Frank Levi who did warren and Robbins modded Marshall heads Was my mentor and roommate. We used to go to Lee’s all the time and in his living room you could put together the most insane charvels or BC Rich Guitars from spare parts. It used to be heaven literally there were lots of bodies and necks and then also Lee gave you the choice if you wanted tohe guy who painted them for charvel. So you could get the most insane graphics on them like the guys from rough cutt had for example. In the early 80s I can’t tell you how many amazing guitar players we’re on the floor in the living room as we sorted through and picked through necks and bodies it was just total guitar heaven. And they were cheap and I mean low cost. It was awesome
Always loved Warren’s playing
So crazy this comes up… I’ve been listening to Ratt all week!
Lol. I used to buy 2nds directly from Grover.
Warren seems like a good dude.
Finally, someone’s got a direct line of contact with Warren😂 Stephen (Who’s a quite regular guest over on Jason Green’s channel) has reiterated he nor Juan or Bobby has had one with Warren since he left the band apparently.
I went to see Uli Roth play and Warren was the guest guitarist. I freaked out cause I had no idea he’d be there
Wow, that must have been amazing!!!
@@goneflying140 it was. Chris Holmes was in the audience
This would sound a lot better if it wasn't so obvious that someone is reading someone else's article.
Edward was always considered way above everybody else he was truly out of this world amazing especially his mind boggling rhythm mastery . Listen to what the great Pete Townshend said about him.
"It's completely tragic that we have lost him , he was not just an innovator and stylish player with great taste , he was also a laid back virtuoso showman who just blew us all away every time , every shredder today has lost their master teacher and guide. Enormous gifts . Immense talent , the great American Guitar player , I was hoping he might be President someday"
-Pete Townsend-
Awesome
Charvel guitars kick ass! I have a San Dimas.
Its either San Dimas or Dinky im gettin next
@@jayteesgear Right on! I'm probably going to get a DK24 soon. Killer guitars. I have a modest collection of guitars, and my Charvel might be my favorite. My San Dimas is a machine! Plays and sounds great. Only thing is San Dimas' are only 22 frets. That's why I'm looking to get the DK24. 24 frets. But it really doesn't matter that much. Check out Cameron Cooper on here. He's a huge Charvel guy! He has a bunch of San Dimas guitars! He's a killer guitarist. Cheers! 🍻
I have an 08 made in Japan Dinky.
Maple fretboard with black shark fin fretmarker's! Big woop, right? I know, I know, but to me it is my favorite guitar. Played one in a music store years ago and was so impressed with the killer flat neck profile I told myself that someday I would get one. Now I want more of them. And a Charvel would suit me fine as well, as far as what I've gathered, very similar neck profile.
"San Dimas high school football RULES!!'
I have a kramer baretta 1984ish custom and prototype at the same time all original in black with a full maple neck and original good floyd.
Worth thousands nowadays. It was found in a nyc pawnshop. I checked with 2 sources the serial and it is what i just described. Not a charvel, but...
Chicks were crazy about those 2 guys in the 80s !
That's the thing about Warren. I love his playing, he's in my top 5 for sure. But as much of a beast as he is, those songs in RATT are sort of built around his chops and his timing. He hands notes and falls behind at times only to catch up. But that formula doesn't seem to work as well in the context of other bands and their music. He can't just be slotted in like that. Look at the vid here on youtube where he slots in for the gig with Whitesnake in the 90's. It just doesn't work. He isn't jiving on those leads and with the material. He's kick ass though!
I agree. It did not work too well with Whitesnake.
Looking that up now thanks
Warren & Robbin are the reason I wanted to play music & why I switched from bass to guitar. I play NOTHING like them but they are my musical inspirations & I'm glad I got a chance to experience them playing.
I got to see Warren's very first gig with Ratt. He was impressive.
Warrens playing and tone is the best.
😕 It's a shame that the phenomenon you described didnt work differently for us... You said that people switched FROM bass TO guitar after hearing Warren and Robin Crosby play. Well, I wish some of our people had been inspired by players like Jimmy Bain and Vinnie Appice to switch AWAY from guitar to bass & drums, because we had like 10 guitar players and NO drummers or bassists! It wasn't til the early 90s that I FINALLY figured out that I was more naturally suited for drums...
@@HighlanderNorth1
I started on guitar, but eventually tried bass and then drums plus backing vocals, just in case someone at the jams or gigs was a no show! True
@@iliafigueroa4820
That's an efficient plan. That way you've always got most or all bases covered, unlike how it was for us in the 80s, where we'd have 3-4-5 or even 6 guitarists sitting around in a circle aimlessly trying to jam, but with no other instruments. It wasn't til about 1993-94 that I bought my first decent drum set and had a semi-proper jam session with 2 other guitarists. Still didn't have a bassist though......
Actually I met an acquaintance who played bass(it was his father and younger brother who turned me onto drums, because they each had a drum set in their basement). But my bassist acquaintance was more of a hippy jam band type player, where we were more into metal and hard rock.
I often wonder if my guitar heroes have ever met each other, which makes that photo of Ed and Warren together so cool. Being able to connect that "shuffle" (as Warrens calls it, though I most often refer ti it as "swing"), from Warren, back to Ed, back to Clapton, then I'd connect the dots and extend that stylistic lineage back to the 3 Kings and T-Bone Walker . . . that is so revealing.
EVH dad Jan played big band...clarinet see Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) But when they got to u.s. big bands days were over so Jan VH had to do odd jobs and wedding gigs. So you are correct it is "Swing" It Don't Mean A Thing If.....
we need more Warren interviews!
LOVE U WARREN.....& GOD BLESS.....thank you for all your incredible GUITAR SOLOS & GREAT SONGS ......LOVE U BROTHER......& REST ON PEACE ROBBIN
This i did Not know, warren was Dio's Guitarist for 3 days? what year did that happen?
Around 2002 when they just completed the "Killing the Dragon" album. Doug Aldrich recorded the album but had left the band, Warren was trying out to do the tour for it.
Randy, Eddie, George, and Vito.
I love Ratt and Van Halen! What is warren doing these days?
Enjoying life
I absolutely love these stories.! Keep them coming!!🤘
Yes in 81 82 we could not afford a good guitar I was reading the guitar magazine interview with Eddie when he said he got a body and a neck that set me going I was already taking guitars apart Ordered a parts catalog from the back of a guitar magazine and ordered a boogy body and a neck got all the parts from the repair guy in the music store and it was a good guitar after it was finished.
The shuffle came from
zztop
Warren = great ax man.
This might be the only interview Warren’s given. The guy never talks.
this is from a recent Guitar World interview.
This is his first in a long time, last one I heard was for the riff raff podcast a few years back.
1:48 I've played a Charvel since 1985 because of Warren and Jake Lee. Saved my money for 8 months to buy it when I was in 10th grade back in 1985. I still have it to this day and it plays well.
RATT really started rolling in 84 when I was 16 in highschool still one of my favorite bands of all time, Warren is a guitar god, absolute legend,
Women and Children First tour! My favorite VH album!
Wanted Man❤
Fascinating interview excerpts from Warren!!
Thanks..
🤘RJD🤘
the "revolution" are you ferkin kidding me? so many were building their own axe back then, wasn't Ed that started that.. good grief
Who does the interviews he does a great job
What in the Robot narration is going on? That's the worst narration I've ever heard. You can't get any more monotone or Robotic than that. Geez
i would've have liked to hear Warren Demartini with Ronnie's band. Campbell was good and everything but he just didn't enjoy his time In DIo probably always and something bad to say about Ronnie. I didn't like that. Warren would have fit perfectly
Wasn't Vivian's beef always about money though? Wouldn't Warren have the same issue? I also seem to remember Ratt/Warren not trusting Beau Hill because they thought he was producing on the cheap and pocketing the rest of the money. I could be mistaken though.
@@chrisb2535 I guess so. all bands have a breaking point. Dokken Lynch and don dokken had it. Crue with Vince neil , Kiss . so yea I guess it would have ended up the same . it's all about money
@@chrisb2535 There's an interview with Beau Hill on this channel regarding that.
Wish he joined Dio! Play all the Sabbath songs. 🎸.
Thanks again
Whoa! Cool one Bloom
Warren looks to be about 6'2" standing next to Edward. I always thought he was a short dude.
Warren's 5'11". Eddie's 5'8"
that was some cool stories.
Do is dark Warren had too much light in his playing to play with Dio,plus he would have starved to death if he had joined🤔
His last name prb means "from the village of Martini". Seems legit!
Happy Birthday 🎂
cool story thanks Full in Bloom
For a few days it was Heaven... and Hell.
Meh
I love my Charvels So Cal and San Dimas.
Thank you
I think the sabbath story is one we can all relate to, whether it was in a band, or a relationship, or that new job we REALLY wanted and finally got.. only to feel that slowly suffocating blanket of awareness that "this isnt gonna work out.. shit". And side note, its funny seeing these band stories now as an older man. I would see bands like Ratt or Quiet Riot and as a kid I never realized.. they were just kids too
Warren is very lucky that he didn't sign on to Dio, Vivian Campbell and Jake E Lee were burned out of millions by Dio and his wife! Never again will I buy/listen to anything by Dio.
