  • Here is your seasonal F-14 video. I'm not a fan of the 14. Not being able to flare a good chunk of top tier IR missiles from the rear is annoying to deal with, and the loadout is not my cup of tea. Many of you probably enjoy your radar gameplay, that's fine - I just would rather have a 4x AIM9L or 4x PL5B or 4x R60M loadout myself.

    I like the idea of smaller player battles but since there are quite a few players that just play attackers on top tier I fear it'll end up being like props 6.0 where you have 4 ju288s 2 attackers and 2 fighters. (but not as bad ofc since attackers in top tier have aams)

      Easy solution is to make it match by role counts. Eg. each team needs at least 2 fighters, and matches the same numbers of each aircraft type.

      Potential solution... actual missions instead of team death match every game. For example: EC maps with entire bases that need damaged/destroyed and "packages" that need escorted. It'd be very cool if a point system would support the objective as well. Just my 2 pennies

      @@Vapor_32 Let's be real, it's unlikely anyone would actually play it like it's anything other than TDM. Shooting other players is what people want to do, so it's going to happen one way or another.

      @@Internetzspacezshipz sure, you may have a point... hell, I enjoy TDM style matches as well. However, a "COD mosh pit" style of maps/game mode selection could be viewed as a breath of fresh air... could be. TDM every match (ground and air) for yeeeears is kinda stale.

    The engine heat soft-nerf is annoying as hell but I don't see any alternatives until more contemporaries are added for all nations. I don't trust Gaijin to go back and un-nerf it though, and having to fight helmet-cued R-73's with the current thermal signature wont be fun.

    You know the engine is super hot when going 50% throttle with 20 flares dropped while maneuvering is barely enough to dodge a single PL-5. For loadouts I still prefer having SARH missiles (specifically the 7F) as of now bcs ooga booga long range kill neuron activation while watching them failing to outmaneuver the missile

      Also the aim9h are kinda weaksause on the IR missile scale. I would absolutely take a bunch of magics, 9l, or pl5b or something over a few of the 7f's for a more balanced loadout, but 9h just arent that good in comparison. Not that they cant get kills, just that they are less deadly on average.

      I take 4 9Hs and 4 7Fs.
      If I really feel like going at it I’ll put 6 7Fs and spend my entire time using ACM mode and head-oning anything with a pulse(Doppler)

    My personal opinion for top tier is team sizes are fine what we really need is larger maps for top tier we are rapidly approaching the era of more advanced bvr engagements and moving away of the fly to center and fur ball tactics

      larger maps still have the same probelm people still fly to the center and furball maybe gaijin needs to create a new gamemode to fix the issue

    I’m gonna get on the less players bandwagon, as you are correct about the F-14 needing more time to get set up for a fight.
    I do disagree with the load out, it’s cracked. With this update I take 2 of each missile type. I fire off two phoenix’s then disengage at Mach. I’ll come back in with my 7F’s an kill anything out at 10 miles. I’ll then get low and go dirty with the E2’s as they are essential for jousting. If anyone is left alive and I’m not outnumbered I then go in for the dogfight as I typically have about 20-30 minutes of fuel at that point.
    The biggest issue is Tomcat newbs playing their kitty like it’s an F-5. It’s a jouster, not a rabid terrier.
    I notice that you don’t switch to TRK in the lock, that’s why you’re getting notched. If I switch more often than not I’m getting high kill counts.
    The Tomcat is a dog fighter, but it’s not a fur ball fighter. I’m an MLA main and IR is struggling comparatively. I’m clapping even in my FGR.2 right now, headlong are the dream. They’ll struggle even more when aircraft with pulse repetition frequency are added (F-16 and especially F-15).

      Exactly, ppl dont know how good the E2 is on the F14. For head-to-head within 5km, nothing can escape from the combination of AN/AWG9 and E2. Historically it should be E4 not E2 integrated with F14, maybe gaijin just too lazy to make a new card for em.

    I am very onboard with lowering the player count for RB, hell I think it's NECESSARY. I would also go a step further and open up the maps slightly, not EC style, but maybe by an extra 1/3 and also giving players multiple airfields spread out laterally across the map would also help with spreading out the players. That's really the main issue, too many people, too close together in aircraft able to close massive distances in seconds.

      I'd take more of the smaller less capable airfields. Nice for if the last guy is running or camping to be able to re-arm and counter it. That said the less people spread out may result in half the team getting 2-3v1 while the others fly around aimlessly.

    2 AIM9H
    2 AIM7E2
    2 AIM7F
    2 AIM54A
    30 min fuel
    Zoom climb to 5km+ and launch AIM54 at targets 20km+ preferably at high altitude. Key to AIM54 is altitude and distance. Also, maintaining a TWS soft lock on the target will increase kill probability.

    I run flares reinforced on the F14 and it works wonders. Sometimes I don't even need to drop throttle more than just the afterburner.

    The F14 is king in EC maps, in normal matches everyone is subject to the snail gods.

    I have to disagree with your point at 2:40, there is a method to have a great KD (mine's over 3) and winrate (~70%) at the top tier, and this method fits Tomcat very well. I call it "semi-rushing", and the points of it are (1) taking down as many enemies as possible before the battle is even started, and (2) safely distracting the enemy team on me and luring them into my own tunneled and spotted, providing my guys with a favourable head-on position.
    Allow me to describe it step by step. You take off, preset wing sweep, radar yareyare... After take off, you want to open the battle with flying some 5-6km to the side from your team at medium altitude directly towards the enemy, carefully scan the air with TWS and either engage the left-most enemy with a couple if AIM-7Fs from 17-12km, or attack multiple enemies simultaneously from 27-25km with Phoenixes. Once the missiles are in the air, crank left towards your team while maintaining the lock or TWS illumination. You can break the soft TWS lock if you have to, but I prefer to keep as long as I can because it improves target distribution for Phoenixes. You also want to dive while running to the left. Why left, you may ask? Because that's where your team is. And if you get things done just right, you'll end up with one guy under attack, and 2-3 tunneled on me, spotted and coming towards my team, so they will eat SARH with their faces from my buddies. Or better yet, multiple Phoenixes hit. Because you can't half ass it or dodge it without even noticing the thing. I gotta admit, I used to ignore them entirely before the missile buff, and now you can see me carrying 6 of them over Afghanistan against a team without Americans and in a dawn map. The effect is devastating. The key is not "shoot and RTB" tho, the key is keeping that datalink as long as possible
    Either way, the enemy is about to lose multiple aircraft for nothing. And that puts them at a severe numerical disadvantage when a dogfight begins. Great if you take out MLDs, M2Ks or other Tomcats, but even getting rid of bloody Su-22 means nobody will have to pay attention to that aircraft anymore, and attention alone means a lot at the top tier.
    Even if your team fucks up somewhere, you still can continue carry, because unlike full rushing to merge, semi-rushing isn't supposed to merge and you are fairly safe. Even if your team is bad, early kills buy your team lifetime, so you can continue doing kills, hence carrying, where you can actually use your AIM-7F from short range (too close to notch), or be fast and yeet a Sidewinder, or use your very good 1vs1 rate fight performance, you name it.
    Or it's the enemy team falling apart. And guess what, you already have a kill or two. Likely alive. EZ
    It's not just a couple of good days, I have over 1000 kills already. And it's not just me, I have a buddy having over 1000 battles, doing similar things and getting similar results. We both think there's no other plane better than a Tomcat at that, because nobody else has a multilock ability. And yes, both me and my friend flew MLD, M2K, yare yare... I've got technically better results in MLD, cause I used to clap poor 23MFers with R-24T lmao. Now R-24R all the way. Still good, but it isn't stellar. And Mirage... Well, it technically has better stats too, but it tends to get good teams now. It takes a skill to grind France, so people tend to know what they're doing. F-14A tho? Honestly, I don't care what my team does. As long as they agree on reaping the benefits of my opening, I don't care what they do all that much. I feel... More independent, and that's indicative of a better aircraft to me

    Yea the hot engines are pretty annoying to deal with. I have been successful in dodging stuff like the 9L, but I gotta literally pull out all the stops to dodge; flare, maneuver, and cut throttle to like 60%. If I’m going fast enough, I usually can get away with it, but it definitely is an annoyance you just gotta deal with.

    We need Air RB EC in the style of SIM. Not just maps, a whole mode. We need air to air refueling and drop tanks. We need SEAD weaponry and anti runway weapons. We need a whole game mode dedicated to long flight missions defending attackers while they take out objectives. Small player matches is the complete opposite direction we need. Giant maps, hundreds of objectives, multiple hour matches you can leave or join at any point. A dynamic front line influenced by players and their ability to fight off fighters, shoot down bomber and attackers, destroying SAMs, and pushing the line back by destroying one of dozens of enemy air fields located and marked by wild weasel missions and scout missions. It could be everything we want out of a sim while being more realistic that arcade but more relaxed than SIM, RB EC. It could be heaven. Bliss.

    theres already a lot of suggestions but ive tried a lot and found the way that works best for me. i take 4-6 e-2's and 0-2 f's since the e2 flies faster at the ranges im shooting them at. also a way to get around notching is to make sure you have acm and change radar mode bound. if you drop lock after a missile is shot, turn on acm as fast as possible and switch the radar to non-pd. 75% of the time i can pick up the target and guide the missile the rest of the way in. they usually dont dodge much after notching bc they think its all they need to do

    The ‘back door’ balancing is the reason I uninstalled wt. That paired with the terrible game mode just makes the game more frustrating than fun. I have top tier USA, Britain, and France. When my consistently best performing planes for air combat are the harriers at 9.7 and 11.0 you know something is wrong with your game. That paired with when I fly out the F-14 or the mirage the radar will track and lock onto phoenix’s faster than “stealth” MiG 23 or MiG 21 airframes is very annoying. The number of times I’ve had missiles miss on MiG 23’s completely unaware or not even trying to evade is rage inducing. Not to worry tho cause if china is on the enemy team you are guaranteed to die to a J7. The F-14 is only good a when you are fighting other F-14s cause US teams are trash and the planes don’t have any back door balance bs to make them better. The game feels cheap and lazy and with the addition of drones higher tier ground is one of the worst pvp experiences you can have in gaming. I have zero reason to play this game anymore.

    TL;DR: Smaller teams with multiple airfields for regular air rb. Bigger maps, multiple airfields, more tickets, multiple spawns like sim as a separate gamemode
    Well I agree with the idea that we should change the gamemode up a bit but not in the sense that we should just lower player count. For planes that can go mach 1.2 in a straight line and can engage enemies from as far as 50km, the regular air rb maps are just too small. While I would like EC to replace all 10.3-11.3 matches, I don’t think that is the solution either. From my experience, simulation mode accomplishes making top tier “fun” to an extent as it has multiple airfields and more things to do that impact the overall match. For starters, just adding multiple airfields would make different engagements occur far away from each other, resulting in less third partying. And with that, tickets could be higher and players could be allowed to spawn by using them, which can result in longer and more enjoyable matches. But, not all people like long gamemodes so this one could be separated from regular air rb. For the smaller maps, from where I stand, the only solution to “1v7 3 minutes into the match” lowering the player count to 9v9 as well as forcing the teams to spread out via multiple airfields that can only spawn 3 planes. This would hopefully result in separate fur balls that each has an impact on the match. Say in one of these fur balls, your team is completely wiped out. If it was a single fur ball, this would be the death of the entire team but because its all spread out, the survivors of the other fur balls could still carry the team.

    It´s really a simple problem, the F-14A was made as an interceptor and wasn´t the designed to dogfight (albeit it can certainly do so), if you´ve ever played or watched DCS or know real life tactics, you´ll realize that the AIM-54 is capable since irl people can´t magically detect a missile, the missile will typically go pitbull 10-15 seconds before estimated impact, which is very long in warthunder, but irl or in a simulator with a cockpit view and no knowledge of the missiles direction typically most people would panic and launch chaffs, which may only evade the missile 50% of the time. Also the Aim-54 had a stupid long range which cannot be exploited in warthunder due to close maps and spawning at low altitude

    That sarh complaint might be the most I've ever wanted to tell someone "skill issue" yet.
    You don't fly straight towards the enemy, you crank to the gimbal limit after firing, and then to the opposite gimbal limit if they fire at you. You don't tunnelvision either, staring at a radar screen isn't going to make the missile fly better, use that time to regain some SA. They don't escape lock by turning either unless you have them in pd, which is entirely unnecessary if they're coaltitude or higher.
    Still don't like fox1 tactics? Do fox 3 tactics. You don't have to spam them all off at once, hold them until you think they'll hit something, fire, and then move on. Mixed loadouts are good for finding your own personal balance of sparrow/phoenix/Sidewinder.
    Sure countermeasures aren't reliable against some missiles, but you shouldn't be giving people the opportunity to fox 2 you in the first place, you're faster than them and you turn better than them, outrun them if they have short range or dodge them if they have long range. Obviously you can't always avoid every missile or see every missile, but you have more than enough capability everywhere else that it's a moot point.

    The phoenix's aren't meant to get kills against fighters, u can send 1 to 4 different targets and force them defensive so you can clean up with the 7fs

    Periodic Countermeasure Release on my F-14A w/ either Reinforced Flares or, if I need to due to consecutive matches of AIM54 spam killing me, Mixed Countermeasures. Pop 3 to 5 behind you, drop throttle to 85% and spiral/corkscrew to throw your Exhaust out of the way.
    Works more often than not, and, the F-14A can comfortably fly between, and fight, 3 or 4 jets if you know what you're doing.
    I'm still not amazing w/ Radar, purely because I have the controls mostly set for input via an X56 HOTAS system, so I generally just leave it be, because the HOTAS lives in a cupboard now that my Missus has her PC on the desk beside mine. :(
    But yeah. Drop throttle, but not too low, trying to stay say at 800km/h or so, and release a half dozen (at most) Flares. I use a .10s delay between Flares, so dropping off 4 or 5 takes very little time, and at 800-900km/h, they're spaced enough thanks to your speed, to be effective.
    (JTC, I do DIE in those 4-man Dogfights, but, I always take 1 or 2 with me. Always.)

    My personal bit with the Aim-54's is that they are good utility but only if used correctly. I bring no more than two Aim-54's with me per match (take 4 for EC maps). Then I have 4 Aim-7F's and 2 Aim-9H's. I feel the Aim-54's have their most utility early game just after someone has climbed to a decent altitude. They can be used to help secure altitude or to abuse said altitude to be more dangerous to targets on the deck.
    At the very least, they're missiles that allow you to safely notch an incoming threat while knowing your missile is still tracking the target. If they hold the lock, they eat a missile (assuming they shot a Fox-1 at you). If they defend the Aim-54, you have shot priority for a follow up Sparrow. Or you could try the strategy (if you have a couple sticks to spare) of shooting an Aim-54 at long range and follow it up with an Aim-7 and see if he treats the second launch like a Phoenix.
    I guess what I'm getting at here is that all 3 missiles have their place on the Tomcat. I have had roughly and equal number of times where I have said to myself "Damn, I wish I had a Phoenix/Sparrow to throw at this guy". Sometimes I need to have a high PK missile. Sometimes I need range. Sometimes I need to engage multiple targets simultaneously. Sometimes I need utility against a potentially competent player in BVR. While I don't fault anyone for avoiding the Aim-54's, I can say from at least my own experience that, given my playstyle and specialty, I'd rather have a couple than not.

      104ASA has 9Ls and a vulcan. Pretty much one of the best loadouts at top tier, just a shame it’s on the 104. The viggen isn’t a bad comparison but that’s what I was trying to address when I said “the f14s loadout isn’t really meta but it’s still pretty much the same loadout as most top tier vehicles, just has more missiles” so i get your point. The “meta” loadout in the way i see it just isn’t very common, and especially not on a hood airframe to match.

    Gaijin should raise the refill price of each phoenix to 1500-2000 SL, otherwise there will be a bunch of monkeys landing after shooting, then taking off and shooting again, which hurts the balance of the game a lot. I don't know why a missile with a maneuverability of 15G would be so difficult to dodge if you don't turn >90 degrees.

    I don’t agree, the SARH can more than change up a fight if fired at close enough range to provide less time to missile guidance, along with bringing 2 phoenix’s you can push two people defensive while still firing at others with sparrows, the 9Hs and G’s are also especially strong and with reinforced flares I don’t have that engine problem. Another factor is that the 7F should be used more like a dogfighting missile unless your in EC maps. Allowing the sparrow to close distances quick at closer ranges allows for easy kills and negating the fact you have to fly at your opponent. I find that in any IR build any person who either has reinforced or just is paying attention will always survive my ir’s. But hey that’s just my opinion, I still respect yours as it does hold truth anyway, the J-7E my personal favorite murders so many aircraft and so easily.

    I exclusively use the AIM-7E-2s at knife fighting ranges with the Tomcat
    Also I try to use the non-PD radar as much as possible to invalidate notching

      Wow someone who actually understands how radar and notching works I'm shocked.
      In some clips I've noticed that notching targets above the horizon are able to maintain their lock. I wonder if Gaijin actually implemented the MLC filter to toggle automatically as would happen with a proper RIO.

    My strat in the f14 right now is taking 2 fox3, 4fox1, and 2 fox2. use the TWS on the 96km because you can see the entire enemy team take off from the airfield, you can get a TWS lock (enemy doesn't know they are being locked- Also make sure they are in range the plane literally tells you if the missile has a remote chance of hitting) and fire a phenix guide for 10sec break lock repeat the other phoenix.

    I feel that the problem with top tier in general, is not only that the matches are overcrowded, but coupled with ever incresing numbers of premiums jets, no matter how well you fly or how good your jet is, its always a 50/50 wether you win or lose.
    If at the start of the match, you're not on the right place to make those early kills, its a GG.
    And I don't really know what happened since the introduction of the F-14, I feel like player quality as gone down the drain. It would be interestinge if Gaijin ever returns the US teams to play on a single side in a match.

    I am a bit new air top tier again, didn't played it almost 6 months.
    Back then I usually played Phantoms and now just spade my MiG-27K and it is a weird gameplay.
    I use 4 x R-60Ms and 5 x FAB-500 dropped with CCRP at a base.
    I usually get to the base but evading all these (S)ARHs is just dumb.
    They intercept me in front of the base and then I have to fly 90 degrees to break the doppler lock but that sets me up for an interception path with an fighter on my 6.
    With teammates around I usually drop my bombs and overall I get an average of 1,5 kills per death but it is just not fun anymore.
    Really love the pretty common dogfights in ground RB.
    F-14 seems to be a monster there that can deny the enemy team completely of any CAS options.
    Smaller player counts with better rewards for compensation would be definitely a good thing.

      Same for the MiG-23M/MF. It feels like the M2000C and the few missile buffs single-handedly ruined multiple aircraft that have either good performance and weapons, but lacking defenses, or vice versa.

    Yeah but that iis the issue with fox-1s in general in even game/sim and IRL... Warthunder just needs to have dffernt larger move cover maps or something to balance it...

    In top tier i don’t bring chaff anymore I take just flares (in mig21 bis sau) i fly kissing the ground and notching when it’s needed but staying low and it work fine for me

    f14 is cool. aim 54's are too heavy for most maps.
    i still enjoy the challenge of the a10 dropping bombs in air rb and trying to keep up with the jets. 2 part mission of arriving at target then destroying target with out getting shot down

    I think that argument about guiding missiles is a pit poor
    You have more than 80 degrees on your radar to turn away and get to a safe spot, meaning your not locked into that one enemy until your missile either hits or misses, you can engage another target with IR missiles and guns, or turn and notch any missiles they throw back
    Or you could just take the phoenixes, almost like the whole point is you don’t have to guide them in

    I ve been saying that for more than a year. top tier need bigger maps and smaller player counts. That's why I'm moslty playing sim now, there you can actually have dueals with other players instad of a random missile fest.I hope I will be able to go back to rb too one day.

      @@SeekerHead most EC size are quite small for top tier, the only big maps are spain, denmark, afghanistan and vietnam. I prefer those maps tbh, but I could play in smaller maps rb if the player number was lower. I'd say 4v4 would be even better so you can have a full team of friends, but 8v8 wouldnt be bad for a start

      ​@@ccclll987 EC maps suck because they don't really have any flow or objective to them, I'd be fine if it was like DCS servers and you could jump in with a powerful radar and missiles at any time, but with War Thunders game modes it's just not possible right now.

      @@jaek__ it is indeed possible especially at top tier. I ve flown basically everything in EC and most of them are viable. Also, in the real ec mode there are objectives to conplete that spawn randomly

      ​@@ccclll987 Yes but they lack the depth and reason/motivation to do them, there is 0 reason to play top tier attacker in AIR RB, unlike some DCS servers with persistent warfare and severs you can just jump into.
      Right now, adding bigger maps just makes people furball at some random point while people look for some level 9 F-5C who climbed to 53,000 ft.
      If you had a server where people have the option to respawn, with dynamic and thought out objectives, with good designed maps for persistent warfare, half of the frustration and issues with the game would instantly vanish, the grind and balance would still suck, but at least then the current TDM PVP wouldn't be one of the worst you can find in gaming.
      The game modes need significant changing, and the maps need major improvement, honestly RB as a whole just makes 0 sense.

    tl;dw: the F-14 doesn't have R-24T like the MLD thus it is bad. Saved you 10 minutes.
    And no, the F-14 is not bad because it lacks long range IR missiles (as all planes will except for Russian aircraft). Seeker just doesn't know how to use radar and SARH missiles properly.

    This whole video just sounds like explaining SARH gameplay that is 100% not only the F-14. Dont want to guide missiles for a long time? Dont launch far away? Use the E-2 Sparrow with shorter range? Literally do 9:13?

      if you don't have flares, it's a challenge to stay alive let alone make a difference in the match outcome. most 9.7 don't have them so they're completely obsolete because they have to face missiles from 1977 and 1982, long after a lot of those jets were retired.

    in Sim, the F14 is a absolute god, nothing is abke to touch it flown properly outside of at best a J7E. thing outrates EVERYTHING like its nothing with proper speed management, and is the definite king of BVR. put both on the same platform and its easily the worst thing any opposition could fight. its only downside is the brain dead pilots that use it. its so painful to watch them dogfight at barely flying speeds and exoecting to win still. and somehow F14 pilots manage to TK so damn often despite having the best radar in game. the sim F14 is truely only limited by pilot. in rb tho, thing def could be better. the F14 just isnt suited for the kind of combat modern rb entails, it wants that long range, 1v1 kind of enviorment where you can manage your speed and fly against one opponenet.
