  • Want to study Korean in Seoul but not sure which university is best?
    Heard a lot about Sogang and Yonsei but don't know who to choose?
    One viewer commented on the previous vid with this question and I thought I'd explain it a bit more for everyone. :D
    If you've more questions leave them in the comments. ^^
    Also this is just my opinion. I am not a god.

    Hi, I'm planning to go to Seoul this Aug and take the Korean Language program. I had a hard time to decide between Sogang and Yonsei. Was thinking to go to Sogang, then changed mind to go to Yonsei (coz I love the campus. It's beautiful :p) ...However; your video made me decide to apply Sogang instead of Yonsei. Your video is really useful. Thank you so much. Are you still studying the Korean Language in Seoul now?

    This video was uploaded 5 years ago but when I clicked and heard "what's the craic" it made me so happy! I'm from Ireland and I'm looking into going to a language school and can't find any info of other Irish people who have went so this is so cool :) I guess you're not active anymore but I wish I could ask more questions about how you went as an Irish person

    Hi, it is really useful, I am glad you made this. A Korean teacher suggested me to use the Sogang textbooks, but I am a student in Yonsei...I guess I'll still buy one Yonsei Korean textbook to meet up with their requirements. By the way, do you know where I can get the second hand Yonsei Korean in 3 weeks -1?

    Hey, thanks for posting this! I already have an interest in attending Sogang University.
    Two questions:
    1) Is it possible to legally have part-time work (like teaching English) while on a student visa?
    2) Does Sogang provide dorm housing for the language program, or would I need to stay in a goshiwon?
    Thanks in advance!! I'm really looking forward to learning next year.

    Hahaha you started the video with saying "What's the crack?" I know it's an Irish expression and all but one time this Irish girl was talking about "what's the crack" with these Americans, who then thought she was trying to sell them drugs XD.
    I did Yonsei two summers in a row, and liked it, but admit at times it got kind of boring. This upcoming summer when I go back I'm trying to try a different one, so maybe I'll do your Sogang program!

    Sogang and Yonsei are all very prestigious universities in Korea
    which all Korean highschoolers dream of.
    Both are in Shinchon area which is famous for University town like
    Sogang ,Yonsei and Ewha- so called Y.E.S league or Shinchon league.
    IMHO,
    "Wanna learn Korean"
    and go to Sogang Uni.
    Wanna play and party
    and go to Yonsei or Ewha.
    It's up to you..

    Im studying at Soongsil Universitys language school and personally I feel in the end its up to you to learn the language, most of the actual learning happens outside the class, choosing a correct language school is important I agree, but it is also important to understand that if you are too reliant on the language school you wont improve to your full potential.
    Nice video, thanks for making it.

      How do you like the Soongsil University language school? Finding information from people who have attended the program has been hard to find online.

    • @MonkeyDBushido
      @MonkeyDBushido 9 лет назад

      Well honestly there are things I dont like about the language school, but I its decent to say the least. I know how Koreas education system is like so I didnt expect much and well Im staying there mostly because I got a 50% discount, otherwise I wouldnt of attended. Anyway the language school itself is decentish, but theres not as much as language practice compared to Sogang for example so its a pretty average school, but for me its just a tool among others for learning and in that sense it has been useful, it all depends on how you study since I try not to rely on the language school too much, I speak in Korean a lot with my friends etc so I get my speaking practice through that.

    hello! im a korean american whos considering yonsei university. i was wondering if you needed a VERY high gpa and a VERY high sat score in order to get into yonsei. i cant find any information on the acceptance rate or the average gpa and sat scores ://
    why are you taking a korean language program? are you considering to become a korean teacher in the states/eng teacher in korea?
    is it easier for people w a non korean citizenship to get into yonsei?
    is applying and going to yonsei like applying/going to any other colleges in the states (usually 4 years)?

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  7 лет назад

      You just need to have passed highschool or equivalent or higher (show proof) and have money and apply within time.
      I was an English teacher in Korea before going to Sogang and was considering applying for a Korean residency visa. My plans have since changed.
      For the Korean Language courses they really dont have a preference, as long as your moneys green or equivalent color. ^^
      No, It's not like applying for uni in the states (i'm guessing because I've no idea what that process is like but im guessing its very different.)
      Hope that helps ^^

  • @MatthewJamesClark

    I plan on attending sogang next year and taking online college for my actual major would you recommend this or think I should put off online college for another year.... just wandering cause idk how intensive sogang is for homework/school work. I want to do both but I do not want to feel like im drowning in work from both online college and korean language courses at sogang... any advice will help :)

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  7 лет назад +1

      I would recommend not studying online college while doing this course, unless you already have a degree in korean and just want to brush up your speaking / are fluent in several languages.
      4 hours straight of studying the same subject is more tiring than studying 4 different subjects for one hour.
      In my opinion, if you can do this course by itself and not fail any semester (assuming you're doing levels 2 - 6), you're smarter than most.
      But I don't know what you're capable of. Maybe you're crazy good at studying, and if that's the case, go for it.

    • @MatthewJamesClark
      @MatthewJamesClark 7 лет назад

      ChineseIrish no ahah I only know very basic I want to learn it, to speak and if I can get a certificate or degree from it that would be amazing to...how long does it take to graduate all six levels?

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  7 лет назад +2

      Level 1 to 6 is 18 months if you do it straight but, only really exceptional people can do that.
      So realistically speaking, it depends on how many times will you repeat, or if you realise it's too difficult and you just give up.
      i know two really hard working smart guys who are married to korean women, have lived in korea for years, studied korean for years in their spare time, but when they came to Sogang they repeated level 3 three times.
      I failed level 2 once and level 3 twice and realised, I wouldn't have the money to continue to level 5 at that rate.

    what kind of homework does sogang give?? cause at yonsei all the homework was optional other than projects we had to do

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  8 лет назад +1

      +MsYugiboy In Sogang it depends on the teacher a lot. Some teachers will give two or three photocopies of work to be done everyday, or exceptionally long writing assignments, but others will say, "Here's homework. When it's done leave it in the homework tray and I'll correct it," so no strict deadline on when it's supposed to be handed up. Some teachers won't say anything if you don't give them homework but others will give you a hard time.
      What kind of homework? Writing assignments, lots of photocopies of grammar exercises. e.g. write 10 different sentences using that grammar. Big grids conjugating verbs, answering questions following a reading / listening piece we just did. There's also a Sogang workbook that you're half expected to do. I'd say only 30 - 40% of students in my classes actually finish those workbooks.
      We get projects and important essays for homework sometimes too and the scores for those goes directly towards subject grade. However in the grading system the teacher allocates 10% of your total grade score to your participation which they allocate at their discretion.

      Thanx for the info!! Was there anything challenging for u in sogang for the first 3 levels like big presentations or long projects that made u abit nervous or stressful??

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  8 лет назад

      +MsYugiboy hahaha, yes! So much! Mainly the pace at which the course moves and the teaching style. Once you fall behind you just feel like your silently drowning in a room full of other people who seem to be calmly understanding everything. Very stressful. The drop out rate / repeat rate is the highest in levels 2 and 3 in Sogang.
      I don't know if you've seen this video, it's basically a long video about what I found challenging doing the course - ruclips.net/video/bCgDKxjHIOg/видео.html

      +ChineseIrish yeah i watched it...watched lots of ur vids ^^ but im deciding if sogang is a good choice to learn korean. because out of all the schools everyone says speaking is the best at sogang and i want to be a great speaker more than writing and others so im trying to decide hehe.

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  8 лет назад +1

      If speaking is the goal, than definitely go to Sogang I think.
      I've met level 3 Korea University students that would probably be level 2 or 1 in Sogang because they can't speak. They get so nervous trying to talk in Korean because they don't get enough practice.
      I've a friend that was placed in Sogang level 2 even though she passed TOPIK level 4, because her speaking was so bad. And it really was.
      I could go on and on. I really don't think Sogang is perfect but for speaking it is the best of what's on offer.

    is it possible for the first year or semester i go to sogang so i can learn to acually talk to ppl. and second year go to yonsei so i can pass that test :D ???? would that work ??

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  8 лет назад

      +Asna .B. yeah, each semester is only 10 weeks so you can spend one in sogang, one in yonsei, one in ehwa, one in kyunghee.. etc.
      its just when you go to a different uni, they'll give you a placement test so you mightn't be placed in level 1,2,3,4,5. they'll probably tell you to repeat because you're not strong enough in the thing that that uni specialises in.

      Koreas a ridiculously fast changing place. I'm sure most of the things i'd tell you now would be obsolete by then.
      But before you get to Korea, the more Korean you've learned, the better.
