Exactly, and a Farmer who starts talking about himself, his issues outside of the animals & farm, makes fans stop being interested. Talk about projects, plans, improvement and the animals. No one cares about the farmers personal issues. Focus on what viewers want to see.

Nothing makes you happy. However, internal peace is an attainable goal. Cant control anything in life but your response in a given situation. You, Morgan, started your farming journey with the best of intentions, not just to have a farm. I think that’s why we all find your story so inspiring. It’s not the farming aspect necessarily, although the animals are pretty rad, but it’s the lessons about accepting your full self that have us captivated.

A businessman that had worked hard his whole life, struggled with happiness, He'd followed the example of all those around him that looked happy and still, happiness wasn't to be found in his soul. He heard of a monk that lived on a mountain that could help as he has found enlightenment. So the man sold his belongings and started the journey. It took him much time and effort to find the mountain and to climb it, once he did, he met a then monk and was overjoyed, he had so many questions.
He first asked "before you became enlightened what did you do?"
The monk said, "i chopped wood and carried water"
The man was excited as he had worked hard his whole life too and asked "what did you do after you found enlightenment?"
The monk look to him with love, picked up the bucket and said, "I chop wood and carry water".
The journey of life is like a river, fighting it is tough. Best we learn to let go of the bank and flow with it. Good job on your work on yourself. Its hard to look at yourself without judgement. Thank you for your content. You're a great man for working on the hard questions, keep at it.

Love you Morgan. Thank you for sharing this part of your life with us. I am now 75 years old and I’m just getting a handle on my eating disorder. I used to go through a whole bag of cookies and hide the fact that I ate the bag by buying another. Every day is a challenge not to do it again. I thought I was the only one out here with those kind of things happening to them. Thank you Morgan for sharing.

Same here! I was sad to hear about his struggles from childhood in school which is what really captured my heart in this matter which I think we've all been damaged by, even the bullies. It's refreshing to hear his explanation about how it all came along for him and helped me put my own life in perspective. What do any of us have to offer when schools only teach us that we have to be the very best of their idea of what our lives should be about. None of what we were taught in school has made any of us happy, not even those who are deemed to be the most productive in life. Schools! Schools were the biggest bullies and they're by and for the good of gov't and industry only and not of us. The gov't does not care about any of us only of itself and it's not even a living thing. I love that this guy gets it and for that reason I've become a recent eager viewer of his videos! It fits my life and helps me figure it all out now at age 65. I've no doubt that our adult children and now grandchildren see how gov't, religion, and industry has been driving our lives and damaging them all the way across the board! Watching his videos are extremely therapeutic and as that goes he's producing something on a farm which is benefitting and feeding society in ways which food alone can't do for us. Country people are upended by his videos because it's causing them and their ilk to be shaken out of their own ruts of doing things per tradition and that makes them uncomfortable. He said it all when he said having a farm won't make you happy. He said it was a calling and I am glad he followed that.

Thank you Morgan for talking about all this, I’ve seen so many 20ish people starting a homestead to secure food & things, being self supporting. I’m 63, my grandparents had a beef farm I worked on in some summers. I was an engineer in Silicon Valley, but if I was in my early 30s, I would start a homestead with large garden, fruit trees, chickens for eggs, possibly a milking cow but would mostly give up meat. Love how Toby sweetly came to see you.❤🐾🤗

I was raised on a farm until my father sold it as he retired . I moved on happily for some time until the longing for the farm grew , then I became a single parent raising my baby boy . Even though I made 150 k designing playgrounds and CEO of the company in southern Ontario I chose to leave it all and get my son back to my old family farm in Manitoba , so I bought back my family homestead cash and bought some critters and never have I been happier ! And my son grew up with the life and death on a farm ,the ethic of hardworking chores and now he is in university and I can rest knowing that if anything happens for my son this farm will always be a way of falling back to his roots and remain safe .

I worked remotely for that same company in Vermont and I remember you presenting at least one webinar for our department there. I retired from there at the end of 2021. Happiness is transient for me and I’ve just come to accept that life has ups and downs. In the down times I just remind myself that change is always coming and things will get better. For me the key is to appreciate when things are good and to keep those memories to think about in the down times. This may not work for everyone, but it has worked for me.

I like the support of my therapist. I like my tribe's support. Plus, I know my medications support me! My chemistry is better and that supports me. Learning to forgive supports me. Happier, not happy is such a more reachable goal. Happiness is fleeting. It comes and goes. But happier, at least for me, is achievable even on a rough day. I have PTSD and it's a daily issue for me. Better than it was before, but it's chronic and I'll deal with it for the rest of my life. We have a small homestead with chickens, ducks and goats (and yes, your assumption that the goats would eat your trees is spot on!). I do feel so much better and happier taking care of our animals and I'm so glad we bought this place ten years ago. So much better than the city for my mental health. Didn't make all my problems go away, though. They jumped into our moving boxes. But, as you stated (in the words of St. Francis of Zappa) you are what you is.

I'm 22, and I have already started to feel that itch to do better for myself. I got out of school, and now I work a job that I have come to realize I despise. I moved to a big city to take a job that I thought I liked just to realize that I can't stand it here. I literally broke down at work today realizing how miserable I am right now, and I've barely started to live my life. two hospitalizations, a slew of medications, therapy up the wazoo have helped a bit, but it's been like slapping a patch onto a leaky hose. either the leak's gonna come back through the patch, or the hose is going to bust again at some point. I have tried school again to realize I couldn't do the path I wanted to (as a result of a combination of factors-- cost, housing, etc., AND it was a path I decided to go down for the money aspect more than the fulfillment aspect), which definitely added to my meltdown, but this video really hit the nail on the head for me. a farm won't make me happy, but I can't get anywhere if I stay where I am. your videos have always been an escape for me in my personal corporate hellscape, and I'm eternally grateful for them. it feels serendipitous that you posted this podcast today, when I'm feeling like this right now. thank you morgan, I'm really going to take your words to heart and start to figure out what I want and why I want to go down a different path. if I had my way I would own a strawberry patch, and I think that's still my ultimate goal. I just need to dig deeper and look into the hows and whys of that. thank you again from the bottom of my heart for this podcast and that perspective, you've inspired one sad little corporate worker to do better today and to look forward to tomorrow ❤

Happiness comes from within. Having the ability to look at the positive things in life will get you further than dwelling on the negative things. How you perceive the world around you, determines how you are affected by it. Don't rely on something or someone else to make you happy, because that is a short path to become miserable. Every choice has consequences, so think through your actions and make educated decisions. Life can be great... if you focus on the things that matter to you.

The hardest step in each day and moment, is actually taking the step I need to get out of the rut of my unhelpful habits. Visiting your farm gives me joy and many Zen moments. I have to say the adult chicken sounds are the best for me. I’m surprised the young chickens still sound like chicks. Takes me back to my grandmother’s chickens. I had wondered how the whole job situation had been handled, but felt that it was too invasive and too parasocial relationship-ish to ask about. A change like this made to a whole new environment and method of earning a living is never a process to be taken lightly. This personal history indicates for both Morgan and SO, that this was a well-thought out process. And this is why I am here, for the adorable (Yes I know that they are stock/inventory) "creatures great and small" and the calm, easy to digest knowledge.

One of your best videos, Morgan. You are absolutely right about the ease with which Allison could find work for there is a dire need for healthcare professionals in rural America. I worked in a clinical lab for 9-years and was promoted to the position of Buyer for a large medical company. I hated it! Yes, having my own office for the first time in my life I was not happy. Also, being that close to administration during the transition to managed care was not what I signed on for. Today, I am a senior officer on two local non-profit organizations, I can walk to work. For me the best part is that I am still in the neighborhood where I grew up. What's not to love that I pass the school where I went for kindergarten which quickly presents a hilltop view of the mighty Pacific Ocean. As an added bonus I started and manage a Monarch butterfly habitat on the grounds of our main library branch here in town. You are 100% correct when you state that one's happiness is an ecosystem.

You have to find happiness inside. External things can tickle your neurotransmitters, but true happiness doesn't come from things, but accomplishments, helping others.
You've done great over the years I've chatted with you and I've watched you grow a beautiful farm business.
You're a giving, loving person who set goals and you've reached them.
I remember chatting with you when you were in 50 Ducks (Matt's) channel.
Has it been that many years? Wow!
I'm still working on getting better and finding my farm. I do OK with a few chickens. It's awesome to give eggs to others, especially when I gave some away and was told later a recipient was a senior with no food in the house.
We are here to help one another. That's true happiness, even if it's just giving someone a smile.

My husband's career was in the corporate world like you Morgan. My husband is retired now. It's amazing that you were a corporate guy and now you're a farmer. Very unusual for someone who's career was in the corporate world. Good for you going for your dreams. You're the perfect example of we humans can do anything we want to do.

This is spot on. I hear what you’re saying and understand why you’re saying it. You were one of the first farm channels that started our dream to move from the city to a farm. We did it in 2020! Phoenix to North Idaho! It changed our lives for the better, im so much healthier but still struggle with depression. But my walks in the forest, and time in my garden has really transformed my life. I’ve been able to reduce my depression meds in half. Moving out of the city wasn’t a cure but it did help me. Release the Quakens!! ❤

How funny, 8 years ago I was living in Bethesda working in Friendship Heights. I also lived near H St. I’m from NH, so I love your channel, Toby Dog, and Abby Dog. I appreciate this reflection on how where you live doesn’t always make or break your happiness.

I spent my last holiday listening/watching your videos from the very beginning.
It got me through my most intense work time, and we are aligned in similar ecological goals.

No, but you can raise your own beef and chickens, and if you are really lucky, you get a RUclips channel out of it that helps you succeed. Plus, an awesome dog or two, and a really nice barn. Happiness comes from within, and it is brought to you by beef!

I really appreciate your being so open about getting in touch with your emotions. I used food for comfort too and also weighed over 300 lbs in July 2018. I lost the weight in about a year and a half after reading Bright Line Eating by Susan Peirce Thompson but only recently realized I've been denying my emotions for so long I don't recognize them at all. I have a therapist and we're doing good work. It struck me funny that we have the same issues but went about solving them in a different order. I like to think of the mindfulness meditation saying, "Wherever you go, there you are." Also, the journey is the reward!

I can appreciate what you’re saying but in my situation I loved my job. I worked until the age of 69 ( I planned to work until 70) but I was layed off at 69. Got a part time job doing the same thing. I enjoy our conversations. When I was employed it required me to get up early and still do today. Thanks again. By the way now I’m 83.

I'm not sure happiness is attainable. To me, it's too transient. Over the last 3 years I've become content. I'm not striving to "achieve" anymore. Job, home, newer car, savings, family all healthy. Content.

What a great timing. I seeked help for my mental health this week for the first time ever due to my inability to grieve a huge loss. That led me to talk about my other issues and I hope that in the end of all this I will be happier and more content than ever. Now I'm definitely not happy nor content. Thank you for talking about these matters.

Great podcast. So many things are being stopped by well meaning family and friends. Not that i listen…but I hear them. What I truly find unique about myself is my goal… to speak to very few two legged people. I love my animals. Enjoying their beautiful eyes and bray is something I can’t resist.
Making money to live, forces me to speak with strangers, some not so strange. But the depression they sometimes bring is terrible. Trying to give me their advice. I watch plenty of homesteaders with no means of income, but social media. Not sure how they stay alive with videos and not a lick of cash.
What are they teaching their kiddos? New tractors, new pickups, new farm wagons…how are they paying for this? It’s getting to be frustrating, wondering how all the insurance, food bills, electricity etc is being paid for? That is something that can be shared ? Crazy 😜 they are not wealthy, and none have odd jobs.
You seem to have it running slowly…but no begging or sponsorship for giant machines I’ll never use.
    My goats mow the lawn.
    Ok…enough from me.
Would love to meet up with you for dinner. I have questions only you can answer.
    Great admiration for you.
Every tear you shed for your animal losses is equaled by me.
Wishing you all the best my friend. ❤🤙🏽
Being left alone with my fur family is very loving. Not perfect, but solves the many rainbows 🌈 and unicorns 🦄 they bring me.
Heavy crafting, jewelry design, and other work thrills me. My opera loving bees 🐝 always make me laugh.. so many things to do. Not much is scheduled. It comes when God wants me to do it. It is all organized and farm flow runs nicely.
Activity brings my melatonin up. I don’t take drugs. It’s what you describe but my version of happiness.
I will let you know I’ve prayed for you and Allison, since you started your journey. Seeing you succeed makes me happy & thrilled for you. Just keep you being you. You will be surprised how much you will get what you succeed. God Bless you. God Bless your furry family. Keep on moving. You impress me.

I think a lot of people think the life of a farmer is a relaxed, peaceful, easy life.
For many, it may be simpler... but it AIN'T EASY.
From hard decisions to unpredictable income to NEVER having a day off, it is a hard job. You're not just playing with chickens all day, you're problem solving SOMETHING all of the time. A chicken or lamb falls ill or gets hurt, you need to make a heavy decision: can it be fixed? Or do i kill it out of mercy?
    For instance:
We had a chicken tractor accident and 2 of my young birds got seriously hurt. They were just pullets and cockerels (about 2-3 months old) and were meant to be our starting breeding stock and layers. My beautiful and good-tempered Americauna rooster had a shattered hip and one leg was broken in 2 places. We had to put him down. The other was a Black Jersey Giant hen, Laila. She had a clean thigh break. I called EVERY vet within a 2-hour distance and nobody would see her. Every one of them said to cull the chicken. Thigh breaks can't be fixed.
So we had a second hard decision. Do i kill my most promising BJG breeding stock hen? She had fight, so we decided to try to save her. With no references on fixing a chicken THIGH break, Joel and i did our best effort and set her leg, bandaging, splinting, and supporting as best we could with virtually no medical supplies and popsicle sticks. The worst part? The chicken tractor accident was MY FAULT. Due to inexperience and newby anxiety, i caused the accident and an innocent animal paid the ultimate price for my mistake. Possibly 2.
    Laila made a full recovery.
She shows no signs of pain, no limp, no visible signs of breakage. She is my best breeding hen. This year she turned out my next generation of rooster. He's magnificent and the best (and BIGGEST) chicken I've ever seen in my life with his mother's wonderfully gentle and kind temperament.
It can be hard to make these calls. I tried to save a different hen who i regret not just putting down. We tried to fix her, but she ended up having basically ovarian cancer and unfortunately suffered. You have to live with the weight of your bad calls just as much as you get to see the benefits of your good ones.

Morgan we need more videos about this stuff. I don't know how much you've been through but unresolved trauma does a lot of this. Some people meditate. Some find God. I think people are social creatures and need to be around others.
