  • The right way to repair a settlement crack - internal lime plaster. For this repair Matt & Craig used Secil Finishing Render and Seciltek Silicate Paint.

Would a mortar caulking gun be better???

Thanks for your question Noel. We tend to use hand application of fillers or mortars to ensure that the material is fully and firmly lodged into place.
Lime-based materials usually contain sharp sand (from fine through to much coarser, depending on the product), and this can sometimes be problematic when pushed or extruded through a tapered nozzle, where the nature of sharp sand can cause binding, and the back-pressure in the gun can simply compress the material and force out the liquid content, thereby compromising the properties and consistency of the mortar.

Hi. I have heating pipes running vertically behind my livingroom wall and its caused a crack. Ive had it repaired twice but its come back again. What should i do to fix it perminently without relocating my heating pipes? Thanks

Hello Gareth. As you will appreciate, it is the effect of heating & cooling with subsequent expansion & contraction of materials which causes such cracking. Ideally the pipes should be boxed in & insulated, and any render/plaster across the area would benefit from mesh embedded within during application. It would be advisable that the heating is left cold during the period in which any plaster cures, this would help to ensure the area is not subject to accelerated drying - another cause of cracking.
If the pipes are embedded in the wall close to the surface, and not contained within an insulated housing of some kind the problem is very likely to persist. I hope this helps.

@@MikeWyeLtd thanks for confirming that with me as i already thought that might be the best way to solve the problem as i dont think the pipes have been insulated. And also thought it would be a good idea to let the plaster cure properly before using the heating again. And as for applying skrim tape over the area, thats a good idea which i never thought of so thank you very much for that tip. Ill be sure to let you know if it worked or not. Thanks again for the advice.

Jeff Regan there is an agent for Kreidezeit in the USA. I believe they only deal with paints but if you know what you want they may be able to add it to a stock order a minimise the delivery cost www.kreidezeit.de/en/distributors/#
      Worth a try.
