- This video looks at how my AudioEngine A5+ speakers failed, why I chose the Genelec 8020D monitors as a replacement, how I up-cycled the broken A5+'s and how I cable-managed my Mac setup to fit the Genelecs.
This is a link to the Yamaha/Genelec comparison video mentioned:

Channel update - I didn't get time in the video to discuss this, but I still don't have dedicated video editing software. I edited this video with a trial version of FCPX. I intend to purchase a full version soon and I have more videos planned - including a 'Mac-guy builds his first PC' video. Keep watching!
Your up-cycling of the dead A5+ is brilliant! Well done!
UltrafiAV thanks. Not my area of expertise but I literally had nothing to lose by trying!
That looks an awesome aesthetic setup you have and the Genelecs just top it off nicely. Good job with the spraying of the mounts too!
Audio Engine is a tourist trap... Nice video and setup!
Thanks! Yes, that is the perfect description of them.
Another excellent video AlbaTech. Good to see that Cameron Gray and your good self both keep an eye on each other’s projects (another Jock here). One thing you both talked about was doing a video about setting up the DrayTek Vigor 130 modem. It would be great to see - I note Cameron is about to consider changing his ISP - as there is no benefit in loyalty to ISP's but the thing that holds many of us back is the thought of another router setup!? Anyway keep up the good work and thanks, you put a lot of work into these!
Graeme maybe there could be a collaboration video ;)
Welcome back! Please more networking videos
Really nice mod on the A5+. That’s awesome!
Hi How do you connect these Speakers directly to your iMac. I got the 8020DPM but only see an XLR Connection on the Speakers ..but how do they connect to iMac?
The iMac has those rectangular Lightning port things back there. Thanks
Not sure I've seen an iMac with lightning ports but I imagine you will probably need some kind of DAC and pre-amp combo to make the most of the Genelecs. If that doesn't have xlr outputs you can find unbalanced RCA to XLR cables out there.
@@AlbaTech I just noticed the iMac has a headphone jack.Thats probably it
Nice job. If it sounds as good as it looks you should be happy. Genelec very highly rated.
Looks lovely! Have you had any issues with the Fostex and Catalina? I'm about to buy the Fostex and couldn't seem to find anything online...
Danny Cohen thanks. I had to do a manual firmware update with an SD card when I first purchased it and it has been running perfectly with all the MacOS updates since, including Catalina.
@@AlbaTech Thanks so much for the speedy reply! Good to know. Are you still happy with the 8020D and Fostex combo? Any issues with running it unbalanced into the Fostex? I'm weighing up between the Fostex and the Cambridge DacMagic Plus... or even just running my 8020s straight into a simple USB Audio interface like Evo 4 or MOTU. My reasoning for leaning towards the DACs was I may connect an Airport Express to be able to stream directly from my iPhone/iPad etc to it (if needed!) - Would love to hear your thoughts, many thanks!
Danny Cohen I still get blown away with how good the Genelecs sound - I use them for entertainment as well as for editing. The cable runs are short so there is no problem running unbalanced phono to xlr into the 8020s. My reason for choosing the Fostex was that it was USB powered - I think that Cambridge, along with most others requires a power brick. Might not be a consideration for you. I’ve not listened to the audio interfaces you mentioned, but I did do a listening test between the Fostex and Scarlett 2i2 gen2 and the Fostex was streets ahead in audio quality. Remember that your AirPlay streaming option will only give you 44.1 so you won’t enjoy the hi res abilities through the AirPort. Good luck!
@@AlbaTech Gotcha gotcha, great info. Thanks so much, you've been super helpful!!
Very nice setup! 👌
Thanks! How much were they and where did you source them from?
Andrew Jackson good question - there aren’t many dealers in the uk. I can’t remember the price but I went with Canford Audio, who were excellent.
how big is your room?
Are these Genelec louder than the A5 ? Thank You
I don’t know how to answer this. They are not PA speakers but both go louder than is comfortable.
@@AlbaTech thanks again
They look much nicer than the A5.
And sound a lot better.
Very clean looking desk! But what is that big screen over your iMac for?
Thanks. That's our TV!
Hi..Cant these speakers simply be connected directly to the back of an iMac Computer with a direct cable.? Thank you
I’ve not tried it but probably. If you don’t mind the poor internal DAC, software volume control and no option for additional sources.
what a clean setup :o
Thanks!
Am I the only one who wishes Genelec also came in white with black grilles? The all white ones seem so bland to me, or do they have more character in person?
Yup! I wouldn’t thank them for that high contrast look. We have black ones at work but the white versions look much nicer.
Nice and Clean 👍. 700$ for pair ?
More like 800 in dollars. The AudioEngine A5s are $400 but they only lasted three years. I expect the Genelecs to last a lot longer, however the improvement in sound quality is worth the price difference alone.
AlbaTech okay..
Most of the review says, Genelec is for professional..
What’s your opinion on using Genelec speakers for home audio?
Thanks
@@AlbaTech Retail is just under $1100...... So I don't know where you came up with 800? Literally $535 per speaker...... CORRECTION $625 per speaker for the white ones....... so please explain this?
symetik I paid £702.90 for the pair. Current prices and exchanges rates may vary.
@@AlbaTech "More like 800 in dollars." 702GBP is 858USD........ who charges 70....2? for a pair of speakers? or $858 for that matter.... this doesnt add up at all. Retail is the same world wide. This doesnt add up
