      No need to replace the part. Learned from fixing dirty volume controls in car stereos that you just need to spray wire dryer/electronics cleaner in. Restores the conductivity of the potentiometer.

    Oh man, I have lived with this problem for @ 10 years. I think that I even contacted Vitamix some years back, but it was an expensive fix. I finally figured that there must be a repair video on RUclips University. Doh! I don't know whether to feel dumb for taking so long...or joyful that it's such an easy fix!!! There is a special place in heaven for people like you who post videos like this. Thank you.

    Thumbs-up! Thanks for the excellent tutorial with brevity and great video detail. I had the same jumpy speed control issue with our Vitamix 5000 and this was a simple fix, particularly with zero soldering required. The part you link to worked perfectly and is good quality. If anyone finds this helpful, I used a 14-mm socket to remove the speed control nut and used channel lock pliers with duct tape over the metal to gently pull off the knob.

      @@manp1039 Yes I did take the case apart, it was pretty simple from what I remember. And yes the speed controller has the contacts in the switch that get dirty over time and need to be cleaned, otherwise you get this issue.

      from what i understand from other videos i have seen.. the potentiometer is designed in a way that allows it to be opened and closed without any damage to it. I saw someone using isopropel alcohol with a cotton swab to wipe the graphit pds and the 3 heads. Also it allowed them to examine the contact heads to see if they were bent enough to make good contact with the graphite pads. .It also allow them to check to see if their was any issues with the soldering and contacts for the wires. From what i saw.. sometimes the nut can come loose that hold the potentiometer in place.. and when that happens people can start causing wear and tear on the connections. In any case thanks for your reply.. I will be opening mine up later this week. I have som WD40 brand contact cleaner spray . and some high strength isopropel alcohol.

      @@manp1039 I was planning on taking mine apart or replacing it. I gave it a treatment with DeOxit first since DeOxit has always fixed this type of issue for me and sure enough it did. I just took the switch out of the case and gave it multiple sprays with deoxit from every angle that I could get into the switch, then I moved it back and forth a bunch of times. I allowed it to drain well onto a paper towel, and everything worked great.

It arrived a day or two slower than through Amazon but it was the same part and included a hexagon lock washer. DH suggested that I omit it and replace the nut without it as shown here. It seems to be holding well without it even though the new part is significantly different. I was concerned it would be difficult to keep the new switch secure and stable. @@jakeguitar01 Vitamix will charge you $100.00 or more to go over your machine and repair whatever needs to be repaired. Unless you can talk them into covering the back and forth shipping, this will also be on your dime as well. I think they know full well that a majority of these repairs are simple and inexpensive.
      They also try to talk their clueless customers into purchasing their blenders dirt cheap and re-sell them. Don't fall for it people! I think Vitamix needs to come clean on the fact that the majority of repairs are not expensive or excessively complicated. They should be more helpful instead of trying to hoodwink their customers into practically stealing their machines and trying to push the purchase of a new one on them. A little transparency would go a long way as far as I'm concerned!

    Great video, thanks for posting. A couple of things... First, my Vitamix unscrews at the top like yours but the drive socket must be removed before the top will come off. The are videos for removal of the drive socket and you need a 2mm hex wrench to remove the securing screw. Second, the replacement part available on Amazon is junk. It's about 1/3 the quality of the original part. Much smaller gage wire, flimsy circuit board connectors and a stamped nut instead of an actual nut. Maybe that's all they make now, but if I find a better quality replacement reheostat I'll post a link. Thanks again!

      Those slip over the top edge of the main housing. I think there should be 4 of those. One for all 4 sides. Their insulators between the top and bottom pieces. They tend to stick to the top shell then fall off, when you separate it from the base.

    Thank you for your video! Instead of replacing the part I thought I'd try DeoxIT cleaner first because I already had it. It was tricky finding a place to spray the cleaner into the part, so I tried a couple different location hoping one would work. It was a night and day difference, where it was jumpy before the control is now smooth across all speeds. It's hard to say how long this will last, but it's working well so far!

    Different Solution usually works: 1) disassemble vitamin in the same way 2) remove only speed controller from case, leave the wires connected. 3) submerge the loose speed controller in isopropyl alcohol while turning the knob from min to max several times 4) if your not scared, plug in your vitamin and test the speed controller (before reassembly). 5) cheers, you just fixed your vitamix w/o buying anything (other than some alcohol if you didn’t have any)

    The speed controller is a potentiometer, the same item that is used for a volume control with an audio amplifier, it has brass finger brushes inside onto a carbon track, so as time goes by it gets dirty and needs a clean, so if you look at the body of the potentiometer you will see a small hole where the body has been punched out for the end stop, so squirt some WD40 in there and move the knob back and forward it will clean the tracks and then work like new, hope that helps Bob in the UK

      The original pot in my 5200 was a pretty bargain-basement part. The replacement part (the new white one with the exposed wire terminals) seems much superior. Probably somebody who can test the thing could get a much better one from an electronics (esp. music electronics) supply, though the white plastic one is working for me. Hey and speaking of that, I found that the "D" shaft "notch" on the new one didn't align properly with the stock bird-head knob, but it's a standard-sized shaft so I was able to use a black aluminum guitar knob that sets with a little screw. Looks cooler too.

    Found a 2" long weight attached to the back inside of the white top. Not connected to anything. Feels heavy for its size. Grey color. Might be lead with adhesive mount. Weighs one ounce. Numbers stamped on it say "1.00" on the left end, "B" in the middle, and "28" on the right end. Any idea what it is used for, besides making the machine one ounce heavier? I put the machine back together after looking at the rheostat and spraying it with CRC QD Electronic Cleaner and twisting the knob back and forth through the whole speed range. Ran much better, so I left the weight out. You mentioned just prying the speed knob off, but mine has a slotted set screw holding the knob tight. Before being in a hurry to replace the rheostat, try the contact cleaner trick sprayed into the front. Doesn't hurt the panel printing at all. QD stands for quick dry. Keep spraying and twisting with the power off, letting it dry for a few seconds, then testing until you get the smooth control you want. Only need to replace the rheostat if the cleaner trick doesn't work. Just got off the phone with Vitamix. They offer $100 trade-in credit for sending in your old machine, if you purchase from them. Good luck! Sure worked for me. One last tip....lay the machine on its back while spraying the rheostat so it all goes inside, instead of running down the front of the case. 🙂

    I bought a vm0178 I bought for vacations and never used for 3yr was still new in box. Mine does that on the manual setting when you turn it from 0 to 10. It only happens right at the beginning from 0 to 1 but because I did t use and got it from Ruelala. So do t know my order number and rhey day rhey can't find it so not sure if this is warrantied still. So will this reostat replacement work for this model and hoe to find that part number and hope it solves this don't like the spit in the face when just trying to lightly mix eggs.

    You can get the part for half price if you're willing to do your own soldering (reuse your wires). Search for "15955 potentiometer". It's a 5K Ohm pot with a D-shaft, for those interested in trying a generic potentiometer for even less.

    I bought the part and put it in but it didn't fix the problem. Mine had gotten to the point that it would only run on the highest speed (number 10). any suggestions as to what to do next? Could the potentiometer be bad?

    Mine had 4 6in pieces of rubber inside that looked like they should slide on somewhere. I don't see anything obvious yet. Where should they go?

  • @edog1955
    @edog1955 4 года назад

    What is the rubber strip at the base of your unit at 4:13? I found the same strip as I started to reassemble the white part! Two notes: 1. The nut on my unit was 9/16ths as another commenter has noted. 2. The rheostat was a bit different than original. I thought that I had to return it, but found that it fit. There is a little tab that fits into a small hole when it is lined up properly.

    • @snochicka
      @snochicka 3 года назад

      It goes on one of the sides of the base when it’s apart. I’m guessing it’s for vibration damping.

    Ive tested various switched and my issue must be the board. The mixer speed basically goes goes to high the variable mix is so minor between switch dialing up or down. Ive bought multiple POTs and none help so I have heard it is a VM103 board issue (I really hope!)

    I opened mine up and there were 4 little rubber sections, one fell out in your video and I'm trying to guess where they all go. You made no mention of putting yours back in, in fact it was still out when you put your top back on.

    I replaced it and I tried it out before screw everything down. After getting everything back in order I used it to make a smoothie. It started out great but then "popped" I got a spark, I wasn't on a GFI outlet. Is there anything I can do now? I am assuming something must have "touched" after I screwed down the casing and shorted something when I turned it on. I hope I can fix it.

    • @jakeguitar01
      @jakeguitar01  3 года назад

      This might work for you. If the potentiometer is stuck at one speed, the wafer inside may be bad, resulting in either a jumpy sweep in the speed or be stuck at one speed.

    The triac transistor screw to the heatsink can cause the same problems if one of the legs is broken off by vibration that's what happened to my vitamix

    • @vedgean
      @vedgean 2 года назад +1

      You have a picture of this part? Maybe i have the same problem. Because of a bad drive socket my Vitamix also got big vibrations and now its only working with the pulse switch. Whole speed control positions leads to no function. I measured about 0-4000 Ohm for my potentiometer, so it seems this is not my problem.
