  • This week Jonny is down in Southampton to visit Unity Brewing as they brew a special spruce tip saison. After starting out focused on Belgian ales, Unity have had to take a u-turn to make a sustainable business - but their new project May Provisions means their Belgian beers are only going to get better.

    Video idea: go thru as many different hops as possible, what they smell/taste like etc. Often when I’m tasting a beer with hops I have never tried before, it helps to know what it should smell or taste like ish. Great video as always👍🏻

    Mad jelly of all the amazing beer you guys get, there might be some great beer over here in Australia, but it's such a big place, that it could be hiding anywhere.

    Lots of Cashmere grown in my home state of Michigan, USA. Beautiful hop, love it in local brews, and bave used it in a pale and a pilsner and loved both. Also recommend some other local varietals like Copper, Mackinac, Zuper Saazer, Bergamont. Also would be worth making a trip out here at some point! It's Beer State, USA!

      @@TheCraftBeerChannel Definitely!! Most of them (except Zuper Saazer) have really cool canned cherry/raspberry flavor (often described as fruit punch, Kool Aid or fruit cocktail) along with the classic citrus J00SE. V fun hops

    Super interesting video. Moon Dog brewery here in Melbourne came out with a 'Dubbel IPA' a few months ago, and it married the two styles really nicely into a malt and raisin forward 8%er.

    Cheers to more beer with locally sourced ingredients, and to Unity's bold move to brew Belgian-style beers in the UK! I also think that Belgian-style beers not really getting a foothold in the UK, is due to different drinking cultures, though.

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel
      @TheCraftBeerChannel  3 года назад

      Oh I totally agree. It is a very small segment of our drinking culture, and our discussion was simply that Belgian breweries dominate that tiny bit.

    I love how he's matched a specific and regional varietal of wine barrel to truly complement and layer his beer. The idea of drinks as a whole spectrum of flavour, aroma and body to be played with like a palette is what the industry should strive for, just as cooking can be as wide as monster munch to molecular gastronomy.

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel
      @TheCraftBeerChannel  3 года назад +1

      Wait wait wait. You mean monster munch isnt the work of molecular scientists?! How is it so good then!?

      @@TheCraftBeerChannel Little known fact: The monsters are time travellers and have come back from the future (someone should do a film about it..) to show us the future of molecular gastronomy, behold Monster Munch. And beef hula hoops.
      It's the future today, or something like that.
      And of course its made from real future monsters, who are totally vegan. Circle of life...

    I'm always more curious about trying the weird saisons and side experiments that a brewery does more so than the hazy ipa and lagers

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel

      100% - something we ended up cutting out of the video was a discussion around how we drink different things when we just go for pints with friends compared to exploring a scene or a brewery. Love to session pints of Pilsner or Pale Ale but if I go to a brewery I want to explore.

    Belgian style beer from UK breweries is definitely underrated. I've been visiting Blackened Sun in Milton Keynes for the last few years and they do some delicious stuff, riffing on hype styles with a Belgian twist.

      @@TheCraftBeerChannel myself and a brewing pal like to travel from Rickmansworth (metropolitan line) all the way to hackney Wick. We were planning to go April 2020 but obviously that was cancelled we are planning a long awaited trip soon, we've been to the cock pub too where they started brewing in the basement. Would definitely love to see you pay them a visit and the crate brewery next door too.

    When I got into craft it was far more normal for breweries to do a variety of styles, instead of breweries who basically build a name just on juice bombs, which are so boring and repetitive.

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel
      @TheCraftBeerChannel  3 года назад

      Yeah like we sorta say in the video it's a shame one style has come to dominate when craft beer was all about diversity of styles at the start. That said, there are SO many breweries out there you can always find variation... we just need to encourage pubs to stock it all by drinking lots of different things.

      @@TheCraftBeerChannel It's weird to me as well because I pretty much never buy NEIPAs, but will pick up other styles from brewers like Verdant and Deya that are really good. Unsurprisingly they're good at brewing other styles. I just wish they'd do more of it.
