  • Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Matt Damon were among the stars who staged a walk-out from the London premiere of Oppenheimer to "write their picket signs" ahead of the Sag-Aftra strike announcement on Thursday evening.
The news is likely to affect upcoming award shows, premieres, events and film festivals around the world after the US actors union declared its first major members strike in more than 40 years.
The premiere of Christopher Nolan's historical epic was brought forward by an hour ahead of a Sag-Aftra press conference in Los Angeles, which later declared the union had agreed to strike.
The anticipated announcement cast a shadow over the London film premiere at the Odeon Luxe, in Leicester Square, with the film's major stars, including Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr, Sir Kenneth Branagh and Rami Malek leaving before the screening of the film.

The artists are right to do this. What are the billionaire CEO's and other heads of companies doing? They are working, behind the scenes, to take our basic rights away from us because people are too expensive. And what about those high salaried CEO's?! Not worth the money!

Today was a rough one. I work for the biggest film rental equipment company in Canada. This morning 29 extremely dedicated and hardworking people were laid off from our warehouse, and all other Canadian locations were completely closed. Leaving one location with a very small skeleton crew. The few large production companies that rule this industry have just left so many people who live paycheque to paycheque now unemployed. The EI based off of what we make doesn't even cover rent for 99% of the people living here. I wish rental house employees were a part of a film union, we are the backbone of this industry, without us you wouldn't have any of your lights, expendables , stands, generators, cable, distro, dolly's, and in some houses camera's or anything required to make the magic happen. I 100% stand by the writers and the actors in this strike, and I hope this brings positive changes for all film workers overall. We all deserve fair pay and treatment.

Now the shitty writers are demanding to get paid more despite them causing the studios to loose money?
Im not saying people don’t deserve to get paid what they’re worth, but I am saying that I think people are overvaluing themselves.
Depending on the source, it’s reported that the average writer makes over $100,000 to sit in their house and write a script worse than Chat GPT cando for a Netflix movie that only 3 people end up watching.
Give me that job, I’ll sit in my PJ’s for only $70k and still write a way better Indiana Jones movie than the Dial of Dickery.

I think it boils down to legislation on the use of technology. I mean I don't think studios should be allowed to "clone" an actor's face and let them use it in perpetuity without compensating the owner of that face. As for the writers, it is admittedly going to be contentious. I personally can't help but feel for all the talented writers being rendered jobless simply because of AI. I do think that the likes of Netflix should be a part of the solution to the issue instead of being the problem. But then again, greed tends to muddle things up a lot.

Step 1: Authorize dark/mad science to allow research and development of labgrown meat and other foods.
Step 2: Opt for nuclear energy research for commericals usage. Defund militaries, let the government elected representatives fight against each other if they want to go to war.
Step 3: Destabilize the concept of money and useless jobs such as accounting and banking. Instead, come up with a better international value system, defund the rich, and start actually valuing people for their talents and skills.

CEO pay needs to be brought in line - it is ridiculous that the combined pay of 8 CEOs in Hollywood would pay the demands of the writers strike for 3yrs easy. This is patently absurd. Only a small few get paid what they're worth. Health insurance should be essential and AI does pose a threat to a great many industries. Who needs extras when you can create them on a computer?

    • @bobsmithy9024

      AI shouldn't be an issue.
The studios can amend the terms and conditions of all future contracts of employment to guarantee no digital likeness of SAG members can be used without the members' written consent. That would include SAG background artists. The terms of the contract would also cover physical media so the studio cannot use a manipulated AI image of an actor on a dvd/Blu-ray, poster etc without the written consent of the actor.
If you agree to your image used for AI purposes the studio will not pay residuals for AI rendered imagery. So basically no actor will agree to having their image used for AI distribution so that should remove the threat of AI taking employment away from SAG members. If no actor agrees to AI the studios can't do it.
If the studios want to destroy their industry go fully AI. Replace actors with CGI copies. But that seems a bit far fetched at the present moment in time. Thw technology is isn't quite there yet. Not on such a grand scale. If you can deep fake and entire cast with cgi models and it looks 100 percent realistic then it's very concerning but the industry is not at that point.
I don't think residuals is possible with streaming. An increase in minimum salary may be a better solution. Maybe a tier payment structure. An independent review body can determine the rates based on inflation.

I found it online at the same time it was playing in the theater. I was in a bit of cognitive dissonance at that point, but as it kept repeating and I kept seeing films both in theaters and online at the same time, I understood the devaluation of the film industry. I'm one of many people who have stopped watching modern movies, because of excessive violence and unacceptably low standards. In addition. almost nothing is left for the imagination in many movies today. Directors have lost sight of that great resource; the imagination of the audience, which can turn a good story into a great movie. TV and movies basically died in the 1990's, as far as I'm concerned, because of that deficiency. I look at what's on offer via paid-for online services, and struggle to find something which I might want to watch. But I'll watch numerous movies from the 1930's to the 1970's, and watch them again. So this strike makes almost no difference to people like me.

The average WGA writer salary is 260,000 a year. The average SAG actor gets 40,000 a year but all these actors demand millions to tens of millions for a single film. Seems like they’re only interested in helping others when it doesn’t hurt their bottom line but its the corporations fault (and it kind of is to be sure) but the absolutely bloated salaries of lead actors and actresses is absurd.

Get a clue I live 30 minutes from Silicon Valley in CA and if you think the actors are paid too much you know nothing. The corporate executives the people who make the decisions as to what gets green lit they make the money and the industry has been hiring over seas workers to do animation for a decade rather than paying Americans who have to pay high rents. Those bloated salaries are frequently 10% of what the studio makes. So you get 20 million for making 300 million for Disney like Johnny Depp. Its very tiny compared to the streaming platforms take. Google Netflix yearly haul and see.

This is a consequence of the math of streaming just not adding up. People pay WAY less than they did for cable, for access to hundreds of productions that are LIKE MOVIES in scope and budget. If the big studios and streaming platforms can't make it work, then it HAS to come from the top line of streaming prices or the return of ads unless you pay an extra fee for each viewing. I use streaming A LOT, it's a big part of my life, but I would pay a few extra dollars to not see ads on a production that MANY people worked on.

I want to be behind this emotionally but also feel the movie and TV industry, much more so the movie industry has been feeding us, by the numbers, cookie cutter scripts and visuals for so long I’m not sure I would notice if A.I. took over. If executives and the powerful are going to squeeze all the originality out when there’s humans involved, as an end consumer I’m not sure there’d be a loss to a computer doing it. This, to me is a call to show me why we should care about humans creating and executing this entertainment. Show me that spark that is beyond a machines programming. Stop making movies with unnecessary agenda’s and political/social statements and return them to real storytelling (looking at you Disney). Allow more than a handful of creatives to get major releases without diluting their unique visions into a formula as interesting as the butter formula for the popcorn….and fire Kathleen Kennedy …lol
Streaming needs to be sorted out for the hardworking working class people who put it together but it also has far surpassed basic cable and most movies in quality original programming.

You should still consider going to the cinema and watch Barbie and Oppenheimer. You'll be supporting the actors, not only the Big A Names, but the smaller ones too - supporting and background actors. As well as all other professionals who worked rigs, lighting, costume, special effects, etc. You should consider unsubscribing from streamers like Netflix or HBO, if you have any. Barbie and Oppenheimer are two films made from incredible talents from the film industry, and they will likely be the last great films experiences we'll get in a while if this strike lasts a long time. Plus, cinema is on a decline. Enjoy the experience while it still lives.

The small actors, writers and crew were already paid for those movies, so everything they make now, goes straight into the studio's pockets, the high-ups who are causing the problems.
I really like the cinema experience (even though it's gotten really expensive here) but stuff like this has me on the fence and even though Oppenheimer was made to be enjoyed in IMAX, I might not go see it because of what's going on.

On strike from what? I haven’t seen a movie, or show for that matter, with good writing for like 15 years. Let me put it this way. Every show gets 100 attribute points. You get to divvy them up any way you like (acting, writing, directing, cinematography…) But new categories have been introduced (diversity, equity, and inclusion) so every single point put into diversity, gets pulled from writing or some other important attribute. This, is the true reason every movie and tv show sucks right now.
