Got a chance to meet Joe Boyd back in the early 80s. I was working for an import distributor in NYC, and he came by to pitch his latest project, the Fruit Tree box set by Nick Drake, which we did eventually carry and sell to indie record shops around the country. At the time, I had no clue who he was, or Nick Drake for that matter, but over the years, I've learned Boyd's story and the incredible contributions he's made. Love Fairport Convention, but strangely, the album I listen to most is Angel Delight, with the stripped down group. Will definitely seek out the White Bicycles book.

Hi Mazzy, a great overview of this major figure who produced a number of masterpieces including 'Liege and Lief' and 'Shoot out the Lights'. I picked up a CD comp in 2006 that accompanied the White Bicyles book. It is a good 23 track survey of Boyd's production work that includes many of the artists you showed in the video. The new book looks fantastic.

You can also check out the Joe Boyd interview on the Word in your Ear pod. On the Waxed's livestream Mazzy said he wasn't sure if he should ask Boyd for an interview. My advice is to go for it. The worst thing that could happen is that he'll say no. Sometimes it's surprising the people that turn up on VC channels. Plus anything that might encourage people to buy a thousand page book can't be bad.

Hi man, nice review of Joe Boyd's work as a producer.Gotta say there's a couple of surprising gaps in your admirable vinyl archive,as well as 5000 spirits try and find a copy of the first self titled ISB album,it shows their first steps from the folk club circuit into the full lysergic landscape of the next few albums.Bob Dylan once said that October Song from the record was one of the great songs...can't argue with his Bobness. Also be sure to get a copy of the first album by the Mcgarrigle sisters, can't believe you don't have it,sublime record, really, really, their reading of Heart like a Wheel even outshines Linda Ronstadt,,and that's saying something. Both Boyd productions, as is the album I'm listening to whilst writing this, namely Smiling Men with Bad Reputations, the solo album by Mike Heron of the Incredible String Band. Haven't played it for years, and I'm impressed,it features guests like Richard Thompson and other Fairports as well as John Cale and The Who(Tommy and the Bijoux),well worth a go knowing your tastes.peace and love man

I admire Boyd for his work and influence on some of my favorite music. A slight criticism: as far as I know Boyd refused to release the wonderful BBC Radio 'Heyday' sessions for many years (recorded 1968-69, first released in 1987). Even if his focus was on British Folk Rock music, it would have been a crime not to publish these wonderful cover versions by North American songwriters.

You mentioned that Nick Drake wasnt good live - thats not correct !! It wasnt that so much, the fact was that the audiences wouldnt "Shut the F...K up" and listen to him when he was playing, and that discouraged him immensely. His guitar technique was amazing, and the three albums he released all excellent. We bought into Nick back in the day, and played his records all the time. Nobody would give him a chance though, and sadly no one near to him thought to help when it was clear he was struggling mentally. John Martyn was a good friend but even he couldnt help. Such a great shame - very sad. Cya Doug

I just listened to Boyd on Marc Maron's WTF Podcast taking about this book. I was a little disappointed with his knowledge on world music, he seemed to lack any deep understanding or context. It may well be the interview format, but it put me off picking the book up. That and the Faber & Faber UK cover looks awful. I might get it at some point down the line.
