On reflection, the more vibrant and crisp textures for the Saturn version don't work quite as well as the PS1's more muted textures when viewed up close. The PS1 has more sophisticated lighting, in fact I assume the Saturn's lighting is kind of a hack and maybe included in the textures. Also, the omission of the sexy hand stand on the Saturn is a pity. This was a good clear comparison video, using the whole screen, unlike vcdecide which puts everything in a box and plays both simultaneously with the sound which is chaotic and confusing sometimes. So I prefer this approach to comparing games. Thanks for the video. You took the time to highlight key points that set the two versions apart.
They could have gotten a lot more out of the Saturn but didn’t have the time to optimize the game for the hardware. If they were to do TR2 or especially 3, they would have needed to play to the Saturns strengths which tomb raider 1 on Saturn did not
The Japanese version was released later and has had some bugs fixed, just like the NTSC version (and the PS1 versions). It does still share a few of the Saturn only stuff, like missing sounds etc. The most notable difference I can think of are the weapons - the magnums and shotgun deal a lot more damage. Maybe I will look into comparing it in the future :D
The Saturn has better colour depth and graphic design, whereas the PS1 version it's lighter, but looks all drained out and Lara looks stretched. It seems that the developers design the Saturn version as the lead format and then ported the PlayStation and PC versions with added features and sound effects. And this opinion is from somebody who grew up playing the PlayStation version.
It was developed for all three systems simultaneously. However, the PC version looks the best, and it is obvious that the developers were using the PC version as the template for the game design. The limited save crystals feature is just a pain to deal with on Saturn/PS1.
@@Rocket1377 actually Core Design used the Ps1 as the base template for Tomb Raider. It wasn’t until last revelation where they decided to put PC first over console.
This is exactly the video I was looking for. Great comparison!
Also Saturn doesn't have a pause feature like the PlayStation so your inventory is your pause on the Saturn.
The PS1 version was way superior, I had both. Saturn Version struggled to hit 20 fps, PS1 was a constant 30 fps.
@@distantthunder12ck55 Saturn often dipped to 20 but it wasn't as dire as you remember. Usually it was 30.
Great comparison, thanks

Glad you enjoyed it :)

I prefer the ps1 version because of its clean, polished, & better controls but I can see why people like the gritter Saturn version also.
Lara screaming in the Saturn version sounds like a firework going off XD
Tomb Raider Anniversary
"I prefer the real Lara"
Tomb Raider (PS1)
"I said the real Lara"
Tomb Raider (Sega Saturn)
"Perfection"
14:40............I was shocked myself playing that area of where you fell of the ledge instead of sliding down in the PlayStation version.
The first time I rolled off like normal then realised I was screaming to my death haha :D
You can do the handstand in the Saturn version actually
Wowww nice Uzi sound loop.
the saturn feels a bit rushed ngl
heard Eidos secured the deal with Sega at the last minute so Core had to rush rush rush
@@kevv95 awwww smh
15:27 what just happened? 😂😂😂
How about comparing the Japanese trikore version to the ps version? I tried comparing Them for myself. The Japanese version is much improved.

Paul Douglas confirmed that the 3 versions were developed simultaneously :)
Keep in mind also this is the pal versions which are the worst versions of any classic/retro game.

Sadly classic tomb Raider was held back due to the ps1 being put first over everything else. Even the Old Core Team admits this in interviews.
both look very similar
The satrun viner
*SATURN wins and PS is too easy with game saves every where* ⭐️
Hard,Harder,Sega Saturn
Texturas e cores melhores no Saturn Saturn wins
Saturn all the way.

Actually this game was first released on Saturn. PSX is a port
