      You're loading the cylinder off the scale. In the time it takes to fill, the scale might shut off. Then you can't use tare weight. Better to weigh the empty cylinder (BTW they're not all the same weight) and add 410 to the weight of the cylinder. Write the empty weight on the cylinder in magic marker so you'll know next time.

    Thanks for the video. You can also buy dry ice (Frozen CO2) in pellet form. This will minimize the risks of handling extremely cold dry ice (-108.9 degrees Fahrenheit). Also, for safety reasons, particularly someone may not appreciate the risks associated with handling dry ice, you should have worn gloves and advised anyone watching to do the same. The math lesson on determining the safe amount in ounces/grams of dry ice to add was very important and instructive but I'm sure your wife could have shown you how to tare the postal scale.
    There are several RUclips videos available on how to economically refill SodaStream 60l canisters. Using the pelletized Dry Ice method, once precautions for handling the extremely cold (-109.8 degrees Fahrenheit) frozen CO2 are observed, this method has fewer risks than refilling SodaStream canisters using another larger pressurized CO2 cylinder.

      There's few things more backwards than the imperial system. I actually just googled a conversion but should've looked here 1st.
      It's ironic in a way - imagine the strength of drug you'd need to convince someone aware of simplicity and convenience of Metric and consequences of a 2nd global unit standard that having your country use olde imperial was a good idea. I mean they would have to be completely fucking shitfaced to the point of barely knowing up from down. Perhaps entering politics has some sort of narcotic effect we're yet to fully understand which causes all the horrendous decisions...

    I've looked at several of these videos stating to use dry ice to refill the SodaStream CO2 cartridges and I noticed that not one ever mentions to use food grade dry ice. Not all dry ice is the same and depending, are handled differently. Regular dry ice has not been processed and in sense not approved for consumption, hence when you look at where they are cut them in to slabs, they are cut with a wet rusty bandsaw. Food grade dry ice has extra steps and has been processed to be allowed to be consumed, like CO2 cannisters for soda machines and also for those wacky foods with the fog from dry ice is pouring out.

    Good vid.
    If you put the dry ice in a plastic bag before wrapping it in a towel, It will be much easier to pour & you will waste less trapped in the terry threads.
    re 3:05 Most electronic scales have a "On", "Zero", or "Tare" calibration button, which you press after putting the entire empty container on the platform. Then whatever you add is measured directly.
    re 5:04 Although he is right that there is still a safety factor, the indicated 2# 4.5oz is greater than the calculated safe maximum of 2#4.2oz gross weight.

    When refilling my tanks, I put a cup or jar on the scale (not the tank itself), as it is more stable that way, and the cold transferring through the scale tends to wreck havoc on the batteries of my digital scale. Using a measuring cup the first few times, you can just go by volume, not weight (if you smash the Dry Ice to powder). Again, I err on the side of caution and only fill to 80-85% of original weight.

    I don't know about ALL the soda stream cylinders, but my relief valve is has TWO PIECES. When I threaded this little bolt back in, the bottle wouldn't stop leaking. Until I found the little dimpled disk on my garage floor and guessed (I think) correctly which way to face the dimple. With this part installed, I got a good seal, and I'm good to go now. Other videos don't show removal of this, so I guess the disc stays in place. I say don't take it all the way off and you'll be fine, but you might have to wait a bit longer for all the remaining gas to come out before unthreading the main cap.

      Actually, from a more technical perspective, the correct funnel was used. The item being transferred is not liquid and in granules and chunks. By using a traditional funnel approach further narrows the opening and impedes the refill process. Or, the chunks of dry ice would need further pulverizing. So an 'outside' funnel may actually be more efficient and quicker. But I guess you got to post a witty comment and appear 'smart.'

    Tip for (sodastream) valves: there's a tiny round foil behind the pressure release that will likely fall out when you're taking the valve apart. You'll need to put it back in if to keep a seal. Don't be like me and mangle the valve trying to tighten it when it hisses.

    Explanation on why refills with dry ice don't give you as much carbonation as refills from the shops...
    Most places in the world have some 'humidity' = water vapour in the air. When you expose dry ice to room air, the water vapour in the air will freeze, and form a layer of water ice on the surface of the dry ice crystals. The longer you expose the dry ice to air, the more your dry ice will become contaminated with water ice. When you weigh your CO2 out to fill the cannister, you are weighing both the CO2 ice and the water ice.
    Most people report that they don't get as much 'fizz' from dry ice filled cannisters (compared with the shop refills). That is because a significant proportion of the CO2 added is actually frozen water. With that knowledge in mind, I would feel happy to slightly over-fill the cannisters to try and get more fizz from the cannister.
    You can get an idea of how much ice was in the cannister by pouring it out on the next refill.

  • @NealPilger
    @NealPilger 4 года назад +4

    Cracking the seal on the original CO2 tanks is a bear, seeing as they have the Hulk and Iron Man assemble these. Subsequent changes are much easier - they need to be snug, but not Superman snug. I run a series of 3 tanks, pick up 2.5 kg of dry ice every couple of months. The whole process takes very little time, after you work through the bugs (chop stick is vital to poke through the funnel as the dry ice tends to molecularly combine as it sublimates). Super cheap and easy way to refill these little tanks. I always get more dry ice than needed as it is fun to have round for science experiments, or just to pop in old soup tins (with small holes in the bottom) to hang in the greenhouse and give a wee treat to your flowers, tomatoes, peppers, or whatever).

    Why take out the external pressure relief bolt if the whole end of the bottle is removed for filling?

    • @iputtinurasp7807
      @iputtinurasp7807 6 лет назад

      Jesse Wright it's just safer and easier to put on the pressure relief valve after you screw on the main valve. You can have pressure build up while you're screwing it on and/or the pressure relief valve is a lot smaller projectile and wouldn't shoot out with as many ftlbs of energy as the main valve.

      Put the wrench on it then smack the end of the wrench on a block of scrap wood. I smacked it a bunch on a 1'' section of 4x4 I had lying around and it did the trick. Additional tip - put down a paper towel folded into quarters between the scale and the bottle. You don't want the frozen spot potentially screwing up your scale, especially if it's a cheapo one like mine.

    • @sandkeyfred
      @sandkeyfred 6 лет назад +2

      I use a strap wrench that works great for this purpose. They are available at most hardware stores & are fairly inexpensive. You can secure the tank with the strap wrench and remove the valve with either a crescent wrench or a 15/16" wrench.

    I'm confused. Have you frozen the dry ice beforehand? For how long? Do you store the rest of the dry ice in the freezer as well or do you have to let it go back to room temp til the next time you want to use and freeze it? Or do you not have to freeze it at all?

    Why do the math when you can just tare the scale

    • @cnote602
      @cnote602 3 года назад

      Depending on the power save mode for your scale if there is long enough inactivity on the scale like the time between crushing the dry ice and placing it in the funnel it can zero out your tare/ turn off.
      My scale in particular turns off fairly quickly.
      If you do the math even if the scale turns off you can keep adding without losing your place.
      Either method is correct. If everything goes according to plan if you use the tare function it is faster. However, adding the weights is more foolproof.

    So why not just put some liquid in a empty 2 liter soda bottle with water and flavor and then just put a small much smaller amount of dry ice in a blender or or coffee grinder and quickly put the powder in the bottle and replace the top? You don't even need a sodastream. Collect a lot of empty 2 liter bottles and make 60 liters from 1 lb of dry ice?

      Read earlier comments about the tiny metal/foil disc that is held in by the small pressure relief bolt. That needs to be reinstalled before the bolt is put back in, otherwise it won't seal properly. The disc can pop out and easily get lost. New discs can be purchased from Amazon.

    For the love of God do don’t do this, I have been filling CO2 for 20 years. Do not do this. Most likely the safety will blow out before you do, but these are filled with solid CO2 not dry ice. Very dangerous!

    • @nationalmaverick
      @nationalmaverick 3 года назад

      What do you mean solid CO2?
      This method works, dry ice is frozen CO2, it has no extra volume when it off gases and so it is absolutely safe if done correctly, if not the tank is rated for more pressure then the inner volume can actually hold, so no way to blow it up.
