Yes!! Him and Davey Allison could have challenged and pushed Earnhardt Sr. throughout the 90’s and probably kept him from winning 7. Then he lost Davey and couldn’t go on anymore, all the repercussions from that 1 accident that never should have happened

Being a Davey Allison fan from the beginning, I think the pairing with Yates was a pairing that had a winning combo as RCR and Dale Earnhardt Sr had. With Yates power and Davey's talent they had wins and championship's in their future for many years, remember Davey learned from a couple of the best being his dad and uncle Bobby and Donnie Allison. Long live the Alabama Gang, what a great part of Nascar's History and the marks they made during their careers. There's no telling how many championships Yates Racing and Davey Allison could have won, Yates engine's will be in Nascar for a long time to come.
My Dad's all-time favorite driver is Dale Jarrett. Among all of Jarrett's paint schemes, his Quality Care paint scheme in 2000 is one of my favorites. I also still remember when Jarrett got his last win at Talladega. My Dad was so happy that day.
I’ve been a Jarrett fan since 1998 watching him hold back the field at Talladega while winning that No Bull 5 million. I was in my college dorm room watching that 2005 Talladega win while on the phone with my mom and grandma who were pulling for Tony Stewart. That was a fantastic win, and really there were so many memories from the 88 RYR time. UPS commercials, Daytona 500 wins and poles, Rockingham duel with Kurt Busch, fuel mileage win at the Pepsi 400 over Big E, the Bud Shootout win over Little E, spin and win at Michigan, Dale and Ricky Rudd challenging Gordon in 2001, etc.
Unfortunately my earliest memories of Dale Jarrett are his last 2 seasons, however he is the one NASCAR driver I've ever met. We happened to run into him in the parking lot of Auto Club Speedway. I was 8 or 9 at the time, and was completely in awe. I barely mustered a "Hello," to him. He said "Hi," back, and then my Mom saved the day asking for a picture. He said "Of course." and my sister and I got a picture. Still have it somewhere on our old computer. The dude's way taller than he looks on TV, I think he's 6'2" or 6'3"
As a Dale Earnhardt fan. I wasn't fond of the blue ovals. But I couldn't ever find a reason to despise Robert Yates or his race team. Robert is a giant in NASCAR. Honestly an underrated legend.
Man I was a big fan of Yates Racing back in mid to late 90s when I first started watching nascar.. Dale Jarrett was the first driver I pulled for .. Would love to see how it would have turned out if Davey was still around .. Sure he would have been a multiple champion
There MAY be another team that went through as much as Robert Yates Racing did from 1992 through 1995, but NO team ever went through more. 1992 ... Davey won the Daytona 500, then was hurt in accidents at Bristol and in The Winston BEFORE turning over so violently at Pocono. Clifford died ... and then came the disappointment of losing out on the championship. 1993 ... that tragedy speaks for itself, and in 1994, the team very nearly lost Ernie Irvan. Incredible.
I think of Dale Jarrett as a 1996-1999 epic program with Dale sporting the mullet, mustache, and the red, white, and blue Ford Thunderbird (later Taurus).
For my dad, it was Davey Allison, Robert Yates, and Ford. He was a ford man and love the Allisons. In '92 the ford Tbirds put a stranglehold in the beginning. That year we went to our 1st nascar Winston Cup race at Michigan International Speedway. Result: Davey Allison dominated the show on that Father's day. It was the perfect day for him in pretty much what would be one of the most incredible racing seasons ever by years end. Even though my driver finished 9th (1 lap down) I was happy for him. Didnt realize how many fans hated Davey till that day. Also, it was the first and last time I saw Davey Allison, Alan Kuwicki, and Richard Petty all on the same race track together.

I was only 5 yo when he was killed and my family & I are diehard Ford Racing fans especially Davey Allison & Mark Martin, so I can’t remember anyone ever hating Davey. Even my dad and I would go at it verbally each race weekend we watched. Now about dem Davey haters like myself, he was a thorn for #3. Allison was always up in the front when Dale wasn't. Before Earnhardt dominated 'Dega, Davey was doing it for the Bama boys since his family are from Hueytown. So it meant alot for him to win on his home turf. But then he also comes to the Charlotte crowd and ends up winning also in 'Earnhardt' country...basically he was Jeff Gordon before Jeff Gordon showed up and if you know about the history between the gordon fans and earnhardt fans....it was like water and oil..ha!
Should of mentioned the reason for Ernie Irvan leaving RYR after the 1997 season was because of a fight he had in April during Easter with a Patron and in May he showed up late to a sponsor appreciation event and Robert Yates had enough of it and announced Ernie was out of the ride and it wasn't even halfway through the 1997 season.
Honestly I had heard stories that it was the sponsor (Texaco/Havoline) that made the decision that either Irvan was gone or they would be leaving. I have heard several different reasons why the sponsors come to that decision but I am fairly confident Texaco?Havoline had more to do with Irvan's departure more than the owner or driver.
Joe Six Pack Yeah, according to ernies book, Texaco was upset when he failed to thank them at the awards banquet in 1996. Robert didn’t want to let Ernie go, it was more of Texaco wanting him gone.
I read up about this in an article penned by Al Pearce, it's everything discussed here basically. Ernie's mental state flipped after the accident. On the track before the wreck he was super aggressive yet he was super friendly in the garage. After the wreck he was softer on the track and forgetful with sponsor obligations and fan events.
I still find it ironic, that in 1992, when Daley was trying to win a championship, he was taken out by....Ernie Irvin. Then Ernie got the 28 ride. Never could route for Ernie in the 28. RIP Daley and Robert
I watched Davey Allison win the 92 Daytona 500 from the infield. I was always an Earnhardt fan, but was pretty upset when Davey died in that helicopter crash. I saw him win, and that made him a favorite of mine.
The Yates team went through a lot. There best driver ever died and a rising star also died. And a very competitive Ernie Irvan was seriously injured in 94. All in about 10 years
Robert Yates Racing was right next door to my shop, (Smitty's Motorsports) We done a lot of work for the Yates team. One item was the UPS pit cart, that thing had more doors, drawers,, slide outs, pull ups, TV'S, computer plat forms and when it was opened up it looked like a big brown HOTEL, LOL.
I just rewatched the entire 1994 season. In my opinion, Ernie Irvan would have won the championship that year if not for that crash at Michigan. Earnhardt was incredibly consistent that year but Ernie was trading the points lead back and forth with him all ready. They had the car, the driver, and the team to be a champion.
My house was big Ernie supporters. My dad had met him just when we took over the 28 car - turns out Ernie was a friend of my dad's boss. My dad thought he was awesome and put his support into him We really did think he'd get the championship that year too. My gram was the one who heard about the accident and I stayed up all night hoping he'd pull thru. His recovery was remarkable all things considered and although he never returned to form, I was proud he came back and proved he could still drive
I was DIEHARD RYR!!!! Davey is my hero. I followed DJ from the start at RYR till the end. I also was and still am a DIEHARD 28 fan. I havent had a dog in the hunt in Nascar since Ricky retired. Just cant seem to get behind anyone anymore. I dont mind Harvick since he in a FORD now but just doesnt do it for me. I really miss Robert Yate Racing!!! Is my all time favorite organization. :( Sad that things cant stay the same. Really miss those days.
Please do one on the rise and fall of Junior Johnson Racing. He was one of the top teams of the 80’s and then everything fell out from under him in the 90s after having some success with Bill Elliott before his Johnson’s divorce

It was real easy for me to be a fan of Robert Yates racing I went to school for Ford motor company and went to their apprentice program and worked at a Ford dealer for 20 years so it was a natural for me to be a quality Care car fan with Dale Jarrett
I'm also a fan of Ricky Rudd and the 28 car that black car with the big red star on the hood was the best looking car NASCAR and Ricky Rudd was driving it for a while that was my favorite time of being a Nascar fan was late 90s in the early 2000s
Well this video says it all about RYR! In the late 80's before restrictor place race Yates built wicked motors for the 2.5 and over mile tracks. They finally won a championship in 99 after having good seasons combined with a lot tragic situations with some of their great drivers. At least the legacy still lives on in Roush/Yates engines!

Ton of respect for Yates, in many ways he was the latter day Yunick. That being said, no one mentions his infamous 1992 Cylinder head which he had to give to Ford so he could run it? Estimates of a million plus over 11 different castings, all with the official Ford part number on them before he was satisfied with the power..... RIP Robert
This is the team that made me a Ford guy. When I first started watching NASCAR in 2004, Dale Jarrett and Mark Martin were my 2 favorite drivers in large part because of Yates (I know Mark was a Roush driver, but Roush and Yates had a partnership through their engine building)

The comments are a year old, but I did some reading, an old magazine article from the late 80's. Davey Allison said he really had to convince Yates to become a team owner. Robert was happy with his engine business, and was against the idea of ownership. Davey finally convinced Robert , and the rest is history. For a little history Robert Yates built the engine for Petty's 200th win. Said he never got paid for it, but figured, it didn't matter.
I loved the video man. Top notch content as always but instead of just starting with Robert Yates just purchasing team and assets from Lundy, I wish you might have touched on Yates's career prior to that point. I realize that his time with other teams does not have much to do with his ownership in NASCAR but is a little insightful as to what led him to purchase the team. Just my own opinion.
Nascar itself is part of the reason Robert Yates Racing started going downhill . Yates and Elliot had the fastest Fords on the track . Everyone else started calling foul because nobody else could keep up . So Nascar made them start sharing ideas which was a one way street . No one else could give anything to the 2 best brains out there .
In 2004 was Elliott Sadler had his best year ever in the Cup Series. RIP Robert Yates. Dale Jarrett won the championship in the year I was born. I wish Davey Allison ever won a championship but too bad a planet crash took his life like Alan Kulwicki.
I forgot or didn't even realize that Menard and the 98 was even a Yates car. The mid-90s with Ernie and Dale was a very potent combination, and that Ford Credit 88 is one of my all-time favorite schemes.
As a kid was a fan of David Gilliland, he was my dads best friends cousin. David came over for a UFC fight i was 13 wen i met him, and i was very interested in the motorsports and team side of it. And he told me some good stuff. Cool guy
FRR is another team that went out in an odd way - after one of its sponsors announced late it was leaving the sport. At least that entire team (minus the owner) and remaining sponsors were ported to the main Gibbs stable.
I'm at the front of the 17 car 22 second mark, talking to Brian Pattie (not in picture) I'd built the engine in the very cool Robert Yates tribute car.driven by Stenhouse at Phoenix. There's a video of it on my page where Doug Yates cranks it up after Roush gave him the car.
The biggest mistake Yates made was giving all his secrets to Roush for free, it helped Roush a ton but did nothing to help Yates. The situation of this team was completely hopeless by the end of 2006. The team was still fairly competitive until the end, and remained a pole threat on the superspeedways all the way to the end. But at the end of 2006 when Mars said they’d be leaving after one more season, spending their 2008 dollars on Rudd in 07, while both Robert Yates and driver Rudd were also confirmed to be retiring after 2007, the future lineup for 2008 appeared to be Stephen Leicht and David Gilliland with no primary sponsors… now they ended up making it work for another year in 2008 thanks to Roush giving Travis Kvapil and all the sponsors from his Roush Truck ride to Yates, along with Yates bringing up Citi from the Busch car and signing FreeCreditReport (they had the best commercials ever), but there was no way it was going to be sustainable. By the beginning of 2009, the writing was truly one the wall. One of the saddest sights in nascar was watching that blank 28 car running around in early 2009 with big letters in impact font (yes the meme font) reading “sponsoryates.com”.
Adam Moreira how can there be a rise and fall of a guy who never really had a legit ride of virtually any kind? Guy got a handful of chances in Yates and RCR equipment and generally made the most of it, Leicht was one of only a handful of Busch regulars to win a race in that era of extreme Buschwhacking

It was always Robert Yates Racing until he retired. That's when it changed to Yates racing. I love the 28 Havoline car. It doesn't matter the scheme, it's one of the best looking cars of all time.

The Fall of Robert Yates Racing was mostly because they signed Andy Armstrong to the 88 after Dale Jarrett retired. (By the way, this is a joke. i've been playing NASCAR 05 lately and that happened in Fight To The Top.)
Haha I have been playing NASCAR thunder 03 and Robert Yates made some big mistakes with replacing Rudd in 28 with Audrey Clark, Jarrett in 88 with Dan Pardus. Both compete for 29th and 30th in the standings lol
In the 2006 version, I bought Yates Racing after my previous team (the 126 O'Rielly Ford) decided not to re-sign me despite winning just about every race for 2 1/2 seasons. I wanted to drive the 88.
In NASCAR thunder 2004 Stanton Barrett was in the 9 car and vickers replacing Labonte in a remade Busch Series car and something else I can’t remember and in fight to the top in NASCAR 06 pj Harris was signed to the 14 car and I said WHO?? not kidding
Two huge issues hurt this team. One was Davey’s death. The other was Yates splitting up Todd Parrott and Jarrett to push Elliott Sadler. They never recovered from this move and when Parrott and Jarrett implored Yates to reunite them saying they would win one of the last 10 races of the season. In fact, it only took 2!! But again the next season Parrott was assigned to Sadler. I never understood this. But great video!!!

Davey Allison and Ricky Rudd where tow of my favorite drivers. I always thought Robert Yates bought the 28 team after or during the '88 Season and released Joey Knuckles as crew chief
The fall is when they lost Ricky Rudd in 2002. Yates was never the same lacked a veteran presence it seemed. Althoe my favorite driver Sadler did run quite well in 2004. Jarrett however feel off a cliff after 2001 lacked speed and it seemed incosistnency plagued them.

I'd say, instead of a "fall", morphing RYR into Roush-Yates Engines is a "Rise" that is still unmatched. If a Ford is racing in Nascar, it's most likely using Doug Yates' engines. I'd phrase the caption "the continued rise of Yates racing".
I was a big fan of ryr Davey Allison is my hero and always will be if Davey had not got sadly killed in 93 he would have taken many championships away from Gordon and Earnhardt and probably be the greatest driver of all time
Elliott Sadler became my favorite driver in 03 because of the #38 M&M’s car. It was awesome cheering for him in the beginning, but that 06 season was so weird. Something felt off, and that led to him going to the 19 car which destroyed his career. He went from driving the top equipment to Yates to Kahne’s leftovers at Evernham/Gillette/Petty.
RYR was my team from day 1 when I started watching with Davey driving in 89/90, had and still have many of the diecasts from then, after Davey's passing I wasn't sure who I'd follow but decided and stuck with whoever drove RYR cars, which was funny as I wasnt much of a Irvan, Jarrett, or Rudd fan prior to them moving to RYR. I struggled after to Yates closed as a racing team to find a favorite team and driver only last few years with DiBenedetto and Blaney,
Ernie Irvan is the most underrated driver ever. When he got in that 28 car it was magic. I was at the Charlotte race that Fall, and he drove off and left everyone. He would have won the championship in '94 if he wasn't injured, even with that he stayed in the top 20 points while missing several races. Robert Yates and Doug Yates engines are incredible! When they merged with Roush, Matt Kenseth said the difference in horsepower was amazing, and the Roush engines were no slouches either. You can tell about the horsepower now when you see Kevin Harvick in victory circle thanking them for the horsepower with a big grin on his face. The best moment for them recently was Michigan Summer 2018, when Kyle Busch said they got whopped by the blue oval, they blew his doors off through the whole race.
Dale Jarrett in the quality Care Ford will always be the greatest Robert Yates racing car of them all because he was the only man to get a championship and it was just a beautiful paint Scheme and stuff like that my friend nothing against all the rest of drivers whoever drove or Robert Yates racing Dale Jarrett will always be the number one driver for Robert case racing as far as I'm concerned have a good day and God bless
What killed RYR was that they were too slow to adapt to the changes in NASCAR during the early 2000’s. They were one of the last teams to move to building in house race cars and they struggled to keep up with the new aerodynamic technology that was coming out. I remember DJ commenting on their struggles and saying that if he hadn’t watched the pit crew change the wedge or track bar he would’ve called them liars because the cars wouldn’t respond. Crying shame.
Not sure if I missed this or not in the vid. Jason Jarrett drove #98 for Yates at Talladega in 03. Also, I can’t believe jarrett pretty much lost the 97 championship on a bogus black flag at Watkins Glen.

It was Robert Yates Racing until Doug took over and renamed the team Yates Racing. They had a rough go when they lost the major sponsors and decided to replace Sadler with Gilliland. I kind of saw that as their decline plus Penske and Roush seemed to demand more factory attention from Ford which hurt. Being a Davey Allison fan from the beginning, I think the pairing with Yates was a pairing that had a winning combo as RCR and Dale Earnhardt Sr had. With Yates power and Davey's talent they had wins and championship's in their future for many years, remember Davey learned from a couple of the best being his dad and uncle Bobby and Donnie Allison. Long live the Alabama Gang, what a great part of Nascar's History and the marks they made during their careers. There's no telling how many championships Yates Racing and Davey Allison could have won, Yates engine's will be in Nascar for a long time to come.
My Dad's all-time favorite driver is Dale Jarrett. Among all of Jarrett's paint schemes, his Quality Care paint scheme in 2000 is one of my favorites. I also still remember when Jarrett got his last win at Talladega. My Dad was so happy that day.

I’ve been a Jarrett fan since 1998 watching him hold back the field at Talladega while winning that No Bull 5 million. I was in my college dorm room watching that 2005 Talladega win while on the phone with my mom and grandma who were pulling for Tony Stewart. That was a fantastic win, and really there were so many memories from the 88 RYR time. UPS commercials, Daytona 500 wins and poles, Rockingham duel with Kurt Busch, fuel mileage win at the Pepsi 400 over Big E, the Bud Shootout win over Little E, spin and win at Michigan, Dale and Ricky Rudd challenging Gordon in 2001, etc.
Unfortunately my earliest memories of Dale Jarrett are his last 2 seasons, however he is the one NASCAR driver I've ever met. We happened to run into him in the parking lot of Auto Club Speedway. I was 8 or 9 at the time, and was completely in awe. I barely mustered a "Hello," to him. He said "Hi," back, and then my Mom saved the day asking for a picture. He said "Of course." and my sister and I got a picture. Still have it somewhere on our old computer. The dude's way taller than he looks on TV, I think he's 6'2" or 6'3"

As a Dale Earnhardt fan. I wasn't fond of the blue ovals. But I couldn't ever find a reason to despise Robert Yates or his race team. Robert is a giant in NASCAR. Honestly an underrated legend.
Man I was a big fan of Yates Racing back in mid to late 90s when I first started watching nascar.. Dale Jarrett was the first driver I pulled for .. Would love to see how it would have turned out if Davey was still around .. Sure he would have been a multiple champion
There MAY be another team that went through as much as Robert Yates Racing did from 1992 through 1995, but NO team ever went through more. 1992 ... Davey won the Daytona 500, then was hurt in accidents at Bristol and in The Winston BEFORE turning over so violently at Pocono. Clifford died ... and then came the disappointment of losing out on the championship. 1993 ... that tragedy speaks for itself, and in 1994, the team very nearly lost Ernie Irvan. Incredible.

For my dad, it was Davey Allison, Robert Yates, and Ford. He was a ford man and love the Allisons. In '92 the ford Tbirds put a stranglehold in the beginning. That year we went to our 1st nascar Winston Cup race at Michigan International Speedway. Result: Davey Allison dominated the show on that Father's day. It was the perfect day for him in pretty much what would be one of the most incredible racing seasons ever by years end. Even though my driver finished 9th (1 lap down) I was happy for him. Didnt realize how many fans hated Davey till that day. Also, it was the first and last time I saw Davey Allison, Alan Kuwicki, and Richard Petty all on the same race track together.

I was only 5 yo when he was killed and my family & I are diehard Ford Racing fans especially Davey Allison & Mark Martin, so I can’t remember anyone ever hating Davey. Even my dad and I would go at it verbally each race weekend we watched. Now about dem Davey haters like myself, he was a thorn for #3. Allison was always up in the front when Dale wasn't. Before Earnhardt dominated 'Dega, Davey was doing it for the Bama boys since his family are from Hueytown. So it meant alot for him to win on his home turf. But then he also comes to the Charlotte crowd and ends up winning also in 'Earnhardt' country...basically he was Jeff Gordon before Jeff Gordon showed up and if you know about the history between the gordon fans and earnhardt fans....it was like water and oil..ha!
Should of mentioned the reason for Ernie Irvan leaving RYR after the 1997 season was because of a fight he had in April during Easter with a Patron and in May he showed up late to a sponsor appreciation event and Robert Yates had enough of it and announced Ernie was out of the ride and it wasn't even halfway through the 1997 season.

Honestly I had heard stories that it was the sponsor (Texaco/Havoline) that made the decision that either Irvan was gone or they would be leaving. I have heard several different reasons why the sponsors come to that decision but I am fairly confident Texaco?Havoline had more to do with Irvan's departure more than the owner or driver.
Joe Six Pack Yeah, according to ernies book, Texaco was upset when he failed to thank them at the awards banquet in 1996. Robert didn’t want to let Ernie go, it was more of Texaco wanting him gone.
I read up about this in an article penned by Al Pearce, it's everything discussed here basically. Ernie's mental state flipped after the accident. On the track before the wreck he was super aggressive yet he was super friendly in the garage. After the wreck he was softer on the track and forgetful with sponsor obligations and fan events.
I still find it ironic, that in 1992, when Daley was trying to win a championship, he was taken out by....Ernie Irvin. Then Ernie got the 28 ride. Never could route for Ernie in the 28. RIP Daley and Robert
I watched Davey Allison win the 92 Daytona 500 from the infield. I was always an Earnhardt fan, but was pretty upset when Davey died in that helicopter crash. I saw him win, and that made him a favorite of mine.

The Yates team went through a lot. There best driver ever died and a rising star also died. And a very competitive Ernie Irvan was seriously injured in 94. All in about 10 years
Robert Yates Racing was right next door to my shop, (Smitty's Motorsports) We done a lot of work for the Yates team. One item was the UPS pit cart, that thing had more doors, drawers,, slide outs, pull ups, TV'S, computer plat forms and when it was opened up it looked like a big brown HOTEL, LOL.

I just rewatched the entire 1994 season. In my opinion, Ernie Irvan would have won the championship that year if not for that crash at Michigan. Earnhardt was incredibly consistent that year but Ernie was trading the points lead back and forth with him all ready. They had the car, the driver, and the team to be a champion.
My house was big Ernie supporters. My dad had met him just when we took over the 28 car - turns out Ernie was a friend of my dad's boss. My dad thought he was awesome and put his support into him
We really did think he'd get the championship that year too. My gram was the one who heard about the accident and I stayed up all night hoping he'd pull thru.
His recovery was remarkable all things considered and although he never returned to form, I was proud he came back and proved he could still drive

I was DIEHARD RYR!!!! Davey is my hero. I followed DJ from the start at RYR till the end. I also was and still am a DIEHARD 28 fan. I havent had a dog in the hunt in Nascar since Ricky retired. Just cant seem to get behind anyone anymore. I dont mind Harvick since he in a FORD now but just doesnt do it for me. I really miss Robert Yate Racing!!! Is my all time favorite organization. :( Sad that things cant stay the same. Really miss those days.

Well this video says it all about RYR! In the late 80's before restrictor place race Yates built wicked motors for the 2.5 and over mile tracks. They finally won a championship in 99 after having good seasons combined with a lot tragic situations with some of their great drivers. At least the legacy still lives on in Roush/Yates engines!

Ton of respect for Yates, in many ways he was the latter day Yunick. That being said, no one mentions his infamous 1992 Cylinder head which he had to give to Ford so he could run it? Estimates of a million plus over 11 different castings, all with the official Ford part number on them before he was satisfied with the power..... RIP Robert
This is the team that made me a Ford guy. When I first started watching NASCAR in 2004, Dale Jarrett and Mark Martin were my 2 favorite drivers in large part because of Yates (I know Mark was a Roush driver, but Roush and Yates had a partnership through their engine building)
Davey Allison is my ALL TIME favorite driver, My guy now is Ryan Blaney, another humble FORD driver !

The comments are a year old, but I did some reading, an old magazine article from the late 80's. Davey Allison said he really had to convince Yates to become a team owner. Robert was happy with his engine business, and was against the idea of ownership. Davey finally convinced Robert , and the rest is history.
For a little history Robert Yates built the engine for Petty's 200th win. Said he never got paid for it, but figured, it didn't matter.
I loved the video man. Top notch content as always but instead of just starting with Robert Yates just purchasing team and assets from Lundy, I wish you might have touched on Yates's career prior to that point. I realize that his time with other teams does not have much to do with his ownership in NASCAR but is a little insightful as to what led him to purchase the team. Just my own opinion.
Nascar itself is part of the reason Robert Yates Racing started going downhill . Yates and Elliot had the fastest Fords on the track . Everyone else started calling foul because nobody else could keep up . So Nascar made them start sharing ideas which was a one way street . No one else could give anything to the 2 best brains out there .
In 2004 was Elliott Sadler had his best year ever in the Cup Series. RIP Robert Yates. Dale Jarrett won the championship in the year I was born. I wish Davey Allison ever won a championship but too bad a planet crash took his life like Alan Kulwicki.

I forgot or didn't even realize that Menard and the 98 was even a Yates car. The mid-90s with Ernie and Dale was a very potent combination, and that Ford Credit 88 is one of my all-time favorite schemes.

Robert Yates Racing had such a history of bare minimum championship contenders. A lot of people forget Elliott Sadler made the Chase in 2004.
Great video. The 90/98 cup car actually began in 2003 at the fall race at Talladega with Jason Jarrett. He started 25th and finished 29th in it.

FRR is another team that went out in an odd way - after one of its sponsors announced late it was leaving the sport. At least that entire team (minus the owner) and remaining sponsors were ported to the main Gibbs stable.

The biggest mistake Yates made was giving all his secrets to Roush for free, it helped Roush a ton but did nothing to help Yates. The situation of this team was completely hopeless by the end of 2006. The team was still fairly competitive until the end, and remained a pole threat on the superspeedways all the way to the end. But at the end of 2006 when Mars said they’d be leaving after one more season, spending their 2008 dollars on Rudd in 07, while both Robert Yates and driver Rudd were also confirmed to be retiring after 2007, the future lineup for 2008 appeared to be Stephen Leicht and David Gilliland with no primary sponsors… now they ended up making it work for another year in 2008 thanks to Roush giving Travis Kvapil and all the sponsors from his Roush Truck ride to Yates, along with Yates bringing up Citi from the Busch car and signing FreeCreditReport (they had the best commercials ever), but there was no way it was going to be sustainable. By the beginning of 2009, the writing was truly one the wall. One of the saddest sights in nascar was watching that blank 28 car running around in early 2009 with big letters in impact font (yes the meme font) reading “sponsoryates.com”.

Adam Moreira how can there be a rise and fall of a guy who never really had a legit ride of virtually any kind? Guy got a handful of chances in Yates and RCR equipment and generally made the most of it, Leicht was one of only a handful of Busch regulars to win a race in that era of extreme Buschwhacking

The Fall of Robert Yates Racing was mostly because they signed Andy Armstrong to the 88 after Dale Jarrett retired. (By the way, this is a joke. i've been playing NASCAR 05 lately and that happened in Fight To The Top.)

Haha I have been playing NASCAR thunder 03 and Robert Yates made some big mistakes with replacing Rudd in 28 with Audrey Clark, Jarrett in 88 with Dan Pardus. Both compete for 29th and 30th in the standings lol
In the 2006 version, I bought Yates Racing after my previous team (the 126 O'Rielly Ford) decided not to re-sign me despite winning just about every race for 2 1/2 seasons. I wanted to drive the 88.
In NASCAR thunder 2004 Stanton Barrett was in the 9 car and vickers replacing Labonte in a remade Busch Series car and something else I can’t remember and in fight to the top in NASCAR 06 pj Harris was signed to the 14 car and I said WHO?? not kidding
Two huge issues hurt this team. One was Davey’s death. The other was Yates splitting up Todd Parrott and Jarrett to push Elliott Sadler. They never recovered from this move and when Parrott and Jarrett implored Yates to reunite them saying they would win one of the last 10 races of the season. In fact, it only took 2!! But again the next season Parrott was assigned to Sadler. I never understood this. But great video!!!
I personally felt Parrott and Sadler worked well together, especially in '04, but my memory may be foggy and I was only a kid at the time😂

Anyway Atlanta was gonna be the next race I wanted to attend..I'm in SE KY and was planning on hitting as many tracks in a 9 to 10 hour radius cuz Bristol is closest to me but I wanted to experience other tracks live..05 Charlotte race 26 cautions that was just 6 or 7 hour drive..but if things go right I wanna go up to MIS watch em goin in over 200mph no restricter plate and hopefully give em bout 100 hp back

I was never a Ford fan, but i made an exception with drivers Yates Dale Jarrett and Elliot Sadler. Two likeable guys. Such as sad story no matter if your a fan or not.

The fall is when they lost Ricky Rudd in 2002. Yates was never the same lacked a veteran presence it seemed. Althoe my favorite driver Sadler did run quite well in 2004. Jarrett however feel off a cliff after 2001 lacked speed and it seemed incosistnency plagued them.

I'd say, instead of a "fall", morphing RYR into Roush-Yates Engines is a "Rise" that is still unmatched. If a Ford is racing in Nascar, it's most likely using Doug Yates' engines. I'd phrase the caption "the continued rise of Yates racing".

I was a big fan of ryr Davey Allison is my hero and always will be if Davey had not got sadly killed in 93 he would have taken many championships away from Gordon and Earnhardt and probably be the greatest driver of all time
Elliott Sadler became my favorite driver in 03 because of the #38 M&M’s car. It was awesome cheering for him in the beginning, but that 06 season was so weird. Something felt off, and that led to him going to the 19 car which destroyed his career. He went from driving the top equipment to Yates to Kahne’s leftovers at Evernham/Gillette/Petty.
RYR was my team from day 1 when I started watching with Davey driving in 89/90, had and still have many of the diecasts from then, after Davey's passing I wasn't sure who I'd follow but decided and stuck with whoever drove RYR cars, which was funny as I wasnt much of a Irvan, Jarrett, or Rudd fan prior to them moving to RYR. I struggled after to Yates closed as a racing team to find a favorite team and driver only last few years with DiBenedetto and Blaney,

Ernie Irvan is the most underrated driver ever. When he got in that 28 car it was magic. I was at the Charlotte race that Fall, and he drove off and left everyone. He would have won the championship in '94 if he wasn't injured, even with that he stayed in the top 20 points while missing several races.
Robert Yates and Doug Yates engines are incredible! When they merged with Roush, Matt Kenseth said the difference in horsepower was amazing, and the Roush engines were no slouches either. You can tell about the horsepower now when you see Kevin Harvick in victory circle thanking them for the horsepower with a big grin on his face. The best moment for them recently was Michigan Summer 2018, when Kyle Busch said they got whopped by the blue oval, they blew his doors off through the whole race.

Dale Jarrett in the quality Care Ford will always be the greatest Robert Yates racing car of them all because he was the only man to get a championship and it was just a beautiful paint Scheme and stuff like that my friend nothing against all the rest of drivers whoever drove or Robert Yates racing Dale Jarrett will always be the number one driver for Robert case racing as far as I'm concerned have a good day and God bless
What killed RYR was that they were too slow to adapt to the changes in NASCAR during the early 2000’s. They were one of the last teams to move to building in house race cars and they struggled to keep up with the new aerodynamic technology that was coming out. I remember DJ commenting on their struggles and saying that if he hadn’t watched the pit crew change the wedge or track bar he would’ve called them liars because the cars wouldn’t respond. Crying shame.
Not sure if I missed this or not in the vid. Jason Jarrett drove #98 for Yates at Talladega in 03. Also, I can’t believe jarrett pretty much lost the 97 championship on a bogus black flag at Watkins Glen.

It was Robert Yates Racing until Doug took over and renamed the team Yates Racing.
They had a rough go when they lost the major sponsors and decided to replace Sadler with Gilliland. I kind of saw that as their decline plus Penske and Roush seemed to demand more factory attention from Ford which hurt.
