Johanna Johanna Well, it just says something about what he likes in movies. He is more concerned with relating to the spectacle of the movie, and what it portrays, than he is with analysing the symbolism and underlying conceit. Take Christopher Nolan's films as an example - they are mostly about the spectacle and a well put together, straight forward narrative. There's rarely much going on below the surface of the movie, but what happens is very well executed - Jeremy usually loves those films more than this, Drive or Birdman. Different kinds of films for different tastes.
@@MadsBoldingMusic What do you mean by 'not much going under the surface of Chris Nolan movies'? I am not saying you're wrong, just want to know honestly.
@@ArunKumar-dv8zw What I mean is that Nolan isn't really leaving the central aspects of how his films should be interpreted up for debate in the way that, say, David Lynch does. Nolan's goal in most of his films seems to be delivering thrills with a cool plot by telling the story in an intelligent way that keeps the audience engaged without getting to cerebral. Nolan uses intelligent filmmaking in order to make you feel. Directors like David Lynch and Denise Villeneuve want you to feel as well, but the emphasis of their films is much more on making you think and contemplate the information that your are given. I guess it's a spectrum, neither end is inherently good or bad, and different films and filmmakers will find themselves on different ends on that spectrum. I personally put Nolan, Spielberg and Tarantino on the emotional and visceral end of things and Villeneuve and Lynch on the cerebral side of things. Of course each will dip their toes in both sides, but they usually have a leaning; a home base, from which they explore the art of filmmaking. Hope it makes sense! :)
skekSo the Emperor thank the fucking lord... the twist would have been that in addition to the tiger, there was a lion, a bear, and a cacophony of other creatures on the boat when he got off
Not exactly in terms of technological advancements yes. The tiger did look fake in a few scenes though. Ang Lee didn't deserve the Best Director Oscar he won that was Spielberg's
I usually love your reviews but this one did not do the movie justice, imo =p Life of pi is much deeper than you make it sound, it's darker and just heartbreaking, while still making you feel so many different emotions; it's an unbelievably gorgeous piece of art in every way, visually and otherwise. the biggest theme in it is religion and faith, and the most important part: it has two equally possible interpretations (SPOILERS): 1: the tiger was there and it all happened like he told the white guy, or 2: the animals represented people and what really happened was what he told the Japanese people. there is no right or wrong interpretation: it's entirely up to the viewer to decide what they believe in - faith! This was a seriously genius movie, i can't get over it, it's so incredibly fantastic I actually don't like talking about it. words cannot express. Also, this was NOT a coming-of-age story.
Daniel Jacobsen i think it's underrated o.o i mean i read so many people talking about how they were so bored they slept on the movie theater o.o a lot of people saying that! i don't get it i think the artistic factor alone makes it brilliant, trust me i'm an artist lololololo /yaomingmeme
I hate the movie reviewing culture where you have to get a review out as fast as possible. It never lets critics dive deep into or even think about any real meaning behind films. Which really really is a shame with a fantastic movie like this.
that's hilarious that he mentioned spider man, because i was recently watching the amazing spider man again after having seen life of pi and the actor that play Pi when he is older is in the amazing spider man AND says a sentence with 'Richard Parker" in it and it hit my ear funny...then i realized it was the same guy. so weird
imagine someone 300 years from now...listening to him say "we are coming up on 2013 now".... just imagine.... imagine if we could watch a video where someone says "next year is will be 1623"... would just blow my mind lol
To me the actual story of Life of Pi is that the animals were actually people....all that stuff that happened in the boat with the animals, they were people he just told it as animals to try and hide the horrors he has witnessed.....obviously the Asian reporters didn't want to go with the animal story so he told them the REAL story......Tiger - Pi , Hyena - The Cook, Orangutang - Pi's mother, Hurt Zebra - Japanese sailor..... the only thing I could never understand was the carnivorous island, idk where that fits in the story but if someone can explain it to me please do.....
The whole story that Pi tells is meant to make the writer believe in god and I noticed a lot of reviewers didn't catch this but he said which story sounds better the first one or the second one much like the bible, or the story of the buddha, or any other religious story you know it's just a better story then what might of actually happened so you would rather think the better story was the true one
Religion is ignorance but so is human nature and I do believe that truth is better. this movie is just showing why people follow ridiculous religions but that's just the way I see it and that's a reason I like this movie it shows you when I say ridiculous I mean religions that can be easily proven false
Well im Buddhist atheist which if you don't really understand why Buddhism Is not a religion its kind of hard to explain it but yeah I can still sort of agree with you
+Aaron Proffitt what's the point of remembering you had to kill and eat another person to survive, to remember your own family die in a brutal way? I mean, Pi obviously remembers it, but the way he copes with the situation is really something to think about it. He doesnt renegate from it, he doesnt ignore what happened. He just deals with it differently
A lot of peoples definition of boring is anything that isn't non stop action. For me, suspense, drama, tension, characters , and obviously an interesting/well told story, are much much much much much more important than action. ..... Not sayin your friends are like this, just that many people i know in fact most people I know are probably like that , outside of my friends who are film kids.... (im in film school, so im probably being a snob_)
This was seriously my favorite movie of 2012... I saw it equally as much as The Avengers and TDKR, but walked out really rewarded from this film. I hope Life of Pi wins best movie ( it won't) but It sure has my vote!!
NAETHAN AETERNA Nominated for Best Picture & won Best Director for Ang Lee. Also led the pack w/11 nominations. Pretty much everyone who sees this movie goes ... “wow.” ✌️
the twist of the story which Pi reveals at the end is the really great part and it keeps sinking in in my mind after i watch the movie. Some movies you'll forget after you watch it but this one remains in my mind.
Grown man, yes I am. Cried maybe 6 times for different reasons. Sad scene, sad scene, sad music, feel sad for Pi's situation, jawdropping visuals, sad scene.
I knew an old boy who owned a bar. He would work the bar during slow shifts. I lived at the bar or work, so I got to know him pretty well. Surface appearance: He stands 6’8” and weighs upwards of 300lbs. That weight is distributed 90% upper body, 10% legs. He looks to be in his 60’s. His passions in life are golf and keeping a historical bar alive. In the late 50’s and early 60’s he was stationed in E. Germany as a US soldier. WHAT?! You never know who you’re talking to. When I meet someone new, they have 100% of my respect and 50% of my trust. They work up or down from there based on actions.
This movie was AMAZING! The story was beautiful, the actors were INCREDIBLE, and the cinematics were superb. I especially like the twist in the end, of which pie changed the story into animals when in reality it was humans all along; marking how humans are animals and yet do you chose to live your life according to religion or science. A remarkable film, (I'm an atheist) and although I accept science and reason as opposed to religion I was touched. A must See!
Don't force yourself to read a book of a movie because of those hipsters that say "I read the book before I saw the movie"... And if you want to blow your brains out in a good... way? then... ignore this comment
Pi's relationship wit Pi is more of an "enemy of my enemy is my friend." Both Pi and Richard Parker were fighting that same struggle to survive and, as the story tells you, they did what they had to do to survive.
Jeremy I should thank you. I live in the Netherlands and thanks to your review, I watched the trailer and now, me and my family are seeing this movie for christmas. I thank you, you're awesome!
WAIT... WHY IS THIS NOT AWESOMETACULAR?! JEREMY JAHNS? WHY?? Major props to the kid who played Pi, Suraj Sharma. He will win some awards. VISUALLY AMAZING MOVIE FORSURE
funny side note: The actor who portrays the adult Pi is the same actor as the Indian businesspartner of Curt Connors from The Amazing Spiderman, linking these two movies again together (besides the Richard Parker similarity)
One of the best books I've ever read .I was reluctant to undermine the pictures I had in my mind, but the movie scenes were incredible, beautiful and exciting.I thought the movie version diluted the darker aspects of the story told in the book, but given the rating aimed for I think they did a good job of trading off.
out nearly 100 reviews i have watched over past week, this does not do justice to the movie. the visuals are not just awesome, they are just [you need a 5 second pause here to emphasise ] fuking awesome!! its heavenly, its divine.
You're right about PG-13. Yesterday when I went to the movie, I heard a kid crying in the cinema. I don't even know how a kid can even get through the cinema
When I saw the title of the movie, my first thought was that I thought PI is that one infinitely long number but after seeing this review it all makes sense now.
I'm 14 and as my father was watching Life of Pi (I was on a device) I found myself looking up a lot (through the first 20 minutes) I then found myself watching the movie from that point on and it kept my attention all the way through. It has to be one of the best movies I've ever seen, the cinematics make it look like a documentary while the plot is detailed enough to hold ones attention. All of these compiled together made for an enjoyable, attention grabbing and overall a great movie. Also the end really puts a twist on the whole movie. I would highly recommend this to anybody 12 or over with the brainpower to fully appreciate this movie as not only entertainment, but something that will make you ask good questions. My overall rating was 9.3/10 while it was a good movie there are still bad things to pick apart. While I'm not going to go into depth because of how opinionated people are, I'll let you decide what those poor aspects are. Also, this isn't PG or a family movie, 8 year olds won't get the meanings and its a tad dark for a girl under 13 to watch. Once again, great movie and tells a story that people should hear.
I don't know about the movie, because I haven't seen it yet, but in the book you learn that there weren't really animals on the lifeboat and Richard Parker is simply a manifestation of Pi's darkness in the face of the horrible things he's forced to do to survive. That is why the book is so great and so deep.
I came out of this movie blown away. It's such a simple story yet it has such a profound meaning that it left me believing...in what, I'm not even quite sure of. It's gotta be awesometacular if I had to stop, catch my breath, and silently comtemplate-all the while with tears in my eyes.
Second hand lions is probably my favorite coming of age story. It's one of my all time favorite movies. If you haven't seen it watch it, because it's just awesome. Everyone will enjoy it at least a little bit.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to watch this film on the big screen but I had an opportunity just recently. I wasn't able to start it and only began during their 'territory war' but, man, did I become invested by their journey. It is a beautiful movie. A genuine cinematic gem. I don't know if it gave justice to the book, but the movie made me want to read it. I understand the people who find it boring. Granted, when you add an animal into the story, I automatically become invested on their safety so... yeah. Love Life of Pi.
It did justice to the book, but the book is still much better. It gives you a whole new perspective on religions and life, not in a cheesy and preachy kind of way. You should read the book if you have time. Highly recommended.
It's interesting you mentioned how the tiger's name. the tiger is actually called Richard Parker because of this strange coincidence where there have been several sailors called Richard Parker who got lost at sea or shiprecked
Although Yann Martel did mention in his (fictional) author's note that the story would "make you believe in God" that's not the intention of the novel/film. The intent is the coming of age and the concept of storytelling. In fact, in the novel Pi was actually THREE religions, hindu, muslim, and christian (dunno if that is in the movie), and he didn't prefer any over the other. If you want to bring atheism into this, Pi's teacher Kumar was atheist, and Pi revered him for his strong beliefs
It was a lot darker than I was expecting, kind of distressed me in scenes- I've never felt so uncomfortable in a cinema before in my life. I think that might also be because I'd not been expecting that, though. If you're ready for a thick and thought provoking movie, go for it If you're there for light hearted fun- it's likely not going to be the movie for you.
I know you very rarely respond to comments, and with that said I do have a question.. do you actually buy all the movies you say is "worth buying on blu-ray". I know it's a rating system, just kinda got curious there.
Exactly! That's what I've been thinking! Richard Parker was actually the father of Peter Parker, Spider-Man! But this Richard Parker, the one who was accompanying Pi when he was on the lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific ocean, is a different Richard Parker, a non-human Richard Parker. The Bengal tiger.
SPOILERS The story he told at the end of the movie with the 4 survivors was what really happened, and the other story, the one we watched, is what he made up, but the events in the imagined version mirror his feelings from what really happened. Pi said he felt like evil had consumed him when he stooped to the level of the cook and killed him. That is when the tiger appeared. richard parker represents the beast within him, and his struggle with it to survive. Like jeremy said, they needed each o
I liked this review and agree! The author (not screenwriter) of the original book lives in Saskatoon where I live. I've talked with him a bit and he's an interesting guy - great to listen to. He (Yann Martel) apparently did a great "making of the film" talk tonight that I'm kicking myself for missing, but I did manage to get the "making of" book - very lush!
Am I the only one who noticed the irony that the tiger is named Richard Parker, and Irrfan Khan (who plays the older version of Pi) was in Amazing Spiderman? lol
I thought the movie was pretty good throughout. I can imagine that a lot of people would fall asleep to it, but I'm a big fan of movies with a lot of quiet, slow-paced scenes in them. The ending is what really made the movie great to me. It smacked me in the face like fat, but evidently not pregnant lady.
Jeremy, that opening was pretty funny, lol. Also the plural of nemesis is nemeses, pronounced (nem - e - seas). I thought you would like to know that, lol.
I had good reason too though, because every bit of your comment suggested my thoughts. And right now, I still find it hard to believe you have actually seen those reviews. He calls them among the greatest films ever seen, gives full detail why, and yet you still think all he likes is "Shit getting blown up", even though he typically rates those films lower. You can't even bring any good statements to support yourself, other than, "People disagreeing with me=I'm right!"
I just wacthed this movie with my parents today and I was just crying because of how sad it was but it taught me a very important lesson don't lose faith even if it looks like your gonna die.
Irrfan Khan (the guy who played grown up Pi) passed away today.

Laser Cat was so innocent in 2019.
I feel like he skimmed over the dramatic symbolism that went into the story, which was a dramatic element and really gave it power.
If Spider-Man is the son of a tiger... THAT's why MJ calls him tiger!!!
Do you mean Mary Jane or Michael Jackson?
I'd say Michael Jackson, but seeing as he is dead and I used the present tense for "call"...it is Mary Jane.
+Suvir Sinha Mind == Blown
Thank you for this comment
That explains why irfan khan was in the Amaizing Spider-man
I would say it's AWESOMETACULAR. This movie is so hauntingly beautiful. Absolutely my favorite.
I read originally that M. Night Shyamalan was attracted to direct, but backed out to make Lady in the Water. Thank God.
skekSo the Emperor thank the fucking lord... the twist would have been that in addition to the tiger, there was a lion, a bear, and a cacophony of other creatures on the boat when he got off
@@Frannie2199 😂😂😂😂😂
@@Frannie2199 or that it was just a dream Piscine had while he was drowning in his namesake pool.
After what he did to Avatar the last air bender, he should stop directing.
I loved Life of Pi way more than I expected
It's a masterpiece
Not exactly in terms of technological advancements yes. The tiger did look fake in a few scenes though. Ang Lee didn't deserve the Best Director Oscar he won that was Spielberg's
Captain Jakemerica you must have watched it recently because it was produced over 4-5 years ago..
Captain Jakemerica Disagree, they deserved it more than anyone else and I don't know which scenes you mean, but I think it was extremely impressive
I usually love your reviews but this one did not do the movie justice, imo =p
Life of pi is much deeper than you make it sound, it's darker and just heartbreaking, while still making you feel so many different emotions; it's an unbelievably gorgeous piece of art in every way, visually and otherwise. the biggest theme in it is religion and faith, and the most important part: it has two equally possible interpretations (SPOILERS): 1: the tiger was there and it all happened like he told the white guy, or 2: the animals represented people and what really happened was what he told the Japanese people.
there is no right or wrong interpretation: it's entirely up to the viewer to decide what they believe in - faith! This was a seriously genius movie, i can't get over it, it's so incredibly fantastic I actually don't like talking about it. words cannot express.
Also, this was NOT a coming-of-age story.
Agree with you
Eng Mech thank you (:
it is overrated
Daniel Jacobsen i think it's underrated o.o i mean i read so many people talking about how they were so bored they slept on the movie theater o.o a lot of people saying that! i don't get it
i think the artistic factor alone makes it brilliant, trust me i'm an artist lololololo /yaomingmeme
Totally agree with you but all those deep parts were at the end
Life of Pi - Great Movie - thanks for the over the top review
i loved this movie i would say this movie is ..... awesometacular
its supercalafragilisticexpialidocious.
This is probably my favorite movie of 2012
I hate the movie reviewing culture where you have to get a review out as fast as possible. It never lets critics dive deep into or even think about any real meaning behind films. Which really really is a shame with a fantastic movie like this.
Fun fact: the guy who plays the adult Pi was in amazing Spider-Man 1 so that and the tiger's name are two things those movies have in common.
6 years have passed
@@Aryan-fo1ls 1 week has passed
He passed away
I'd say it's definitely awesometacular.
that's hilarious that he mentioned spider man, because i was recently watching the amazing spider man again after having seen life of pi and the actor that play Pi when he is older is in the amazing spider man AND says a sentence with 'Richard Parker" in it and it hit my ear funny...then i realized it was the same guy. so weird
See? This was a good review. Chris Stuckmann just focused on the visuals, barely going into the story.
you missed at mentioning the soundtrack, it was amazing
imagine someone 300 years from now...listening to him say "we are coming up on 2013 now".... just imagine.... imagine if we could watch a video where someone says "next year is will be 1623"... would just blow my mind lol
No awesomwtacular? Sounded like it from the way you were talking. Cmon Jeremy
0:58 oh young Jeremy, just wait until you get to Cats.
What's the point in believing anything at all really its just a natural way people think.
Amazing film
Ikr :') but why does everyone thinks its boring?
Not everyone thinks it's boring, I have a lot of friends who are impatient and they loved this movie
Well, your friends are awesome, i guess mine just don't know a great movie when they see it. ^^
(im in film school, so im probably being a snob_)
biggest tear jerker ever
The best CGI movie so far. With Ang Lee's creativity and his love of art, this movie deserve an awesometacular.
Some movies you'll forget after you watch it but this one remains in my mind.
still a better love story than twilight
Grown man, yes I am. Cried maybe 6 times for different reasons. Sad scene, sad scene, sad music, feel sad for Pi's situation, jawdropping visuals, sad scene.
One of my favourite movies of all time
this movie was amazing and it actually made me cry at a couple of points, don't call me a wimp it's just.....IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!

Liam Kinghorn nah its shit
Im reading the book right now, and Its realllllly good :)
Do u complete?
This movie was AMAZING!
The story was beautiful, the actors were INCREDIBLE, and the cinematics were superb.
I especially like the twist in the end, of which pie changed the story into animals when in reality it was humans all along; marking how humans are animals and yet do you chose to live your life according to religion or science. A remarkable film, (I'm an atheist) and although I accept science and reason as opposed to religion I was touched.
A must See!
Currently reading this book in English. I want to blow my brains out. The Movie is awesome though.

Is the book written in the Indian accent? :-p
Yeah, the book is a bit boring in the beginning. Bur once you get to the "on a boat with a tiger" section, it starts to get really good.
LoL, i wasn't literally gonna shoot myself. It was just a boring book.
this got ang Lee the Oscar for best director as the visual effects is so good that I couldn't tell what was real at first veiwing.

Pi's relationship wit Pi is more of an "enemy of my enemy is my friend." Both Pi and Richard Parker were fighting that same struggle to survive and, as the story tells you, they did what they had to do to survive.
please review watchmen

WAIT... WHY IS THIS NOT AWESOMETACULAR?! JEREMY JAHNS? WHY??
Major props to the kid who played Pi, Suraj Sharma. He will win some awards.
VISUALLY AMAZING MOVIE FORSURE
great movie
There's one guy in both Amazing Spider-Man and Life of Pi who sounds brilliant when he says "Richard Parker", so I love that he's in the both.
anyone else bawled up and cried when Richard Parker never looked back?
I'm not sure how old I was when I watched this, but I was definitely still a kid.
I think it deserves an Awesometacular. One of Ang Lee's finest for me.
And Richard Parker grows up to be the guy who led Peter to the spiders. Interesting.
funny side note: The actor who portrays the adult Pi is the same actor as the Indian businesspartner of Curt Connors from The Amazing Spiderman, linking these two movies again together (besides the Richard Parker similarity)
One of the best books I've ever read .I was reluctant to undermine the pictures I had in my mind, but the movie scenes were incredible, beautiful and exciting.I thought the movie version diluted the darker aspects of the story told in the book, but given the rating aimed for I think they did a good job of trading off.
woah woah woah how did this not get an awesometacular what are you playing at jeremy
out nearly 100 reviews i have watched over past week, this does not do justice to the movie.
the visuals are not just awesome, they are just [you need a 5 second pause here to emphasise ] fuking awesome!! its heavenly, its divine.
You're right about PG-13. Yesterday when I went to the movie, I heard a kid crying in the cinema. I don't even know how a kid can even get through the cinema
It's the film that gave ang lee another oscar, I have to watch it
When I saw the title of the movie, my first thought was that I thought PI is that one infinitely long number but after seeing this review it all makes sense now.
Which story do you prefer? The one with the tiger or the one with the cook?
Life of Pi was reminded me a lot of Big Fish
Cool and all, but 9.3/10? Why this decimal number in particular?
I don't know about the movie, because I haven't seen it yet, but in the book you learn that there weren't really animals on the lifeboat and Richard Parker is simply a manifestation of Pi's darkness in the face of the horrible things he's forced to do to survive. That is why the book is so great and so deep.
Piscine, which is French for pool. There is a reason for his name, but you'll have to watch the movie/read the book to find out.
I saw this film, when I was young and it was soo worth it!!
Can't wait to watch it again
It's interesting you mentioned how the tiger's name. the tiger is actually called Richard Parker because of this strange coincidence where there have been several sailors called Richard Parker who got lost at sea or shiprecked
His Dark Materials. One of my favorite trilogies and favorite coming-of-age story.
Tiger thinks 'Sweet, emergency food supply'
That the wacky look, what frame rate and shutter speed did you go with?
life of pi is a great movie especially in 3D and may i say one of the few movies that are done great on 3D
I went into this movie expecting a Tarzan at sea with his tiger sidekick, but when it obviously turned out to not be that, I still liked it.
So which story told in the movie was the true one? The first one, with the animals, or the second one, with the cook, sailor, and his mother?
Lucas Dunker the last one - but it's disgusting so I'm sticking with the first
The one with the tiger was the true story in the movie. The story with the cook, sailor and his mother was just to make other people believe.
This movie based on a book is really more deep and complex than what most people see.
It was a lot darker than I was expecting, kind of distressed me in scenes- I've never felt so uncomfortable in a cinema before in my life. I think that might also be because I'd not been expecting that, though.
If you're ready for a thick and thought provoking movie, go for it
If you're there for light hearted fun- it's likely not going to be the movie for you.
I know you very rarely respond to comments, and with that said I do have a question.. do you actually buy all the movies you say is "worth buying on blu-ray". I know it's a rating system, just kinda got curious there.
I need to see this on the big screen.
RIP dear Irrfan ❤
SPOILERS
The story he told at the end of the movie with the 4 survivors was what really happened, and the other story, the one we watched, is what he made up, but the events in the imagined version mirror his feelings from what really happened. Pi said he felt like evil had consumed him when he stooped to the level of the cook and killed him. That is when the tiger appeared. richard parker represents the beast within him, and his struggle with it to survive. Like jeremy said, they needed each o
That sword metaphor was beautiful..
Life of Pi is my favorite coming of age story. I absolutely loved the movie. 10/10 for me.
I liked this review and agree! The author (not screenwriter) of the original book lives in Saskatoon where I live. I've talked with him a bit and he's an interesting guy - great to listen to.
He (Yann Martel) apparently did a great "making of the film" talk tonight that I'm kicking myself
for missing, but I did manage to get the "making of" book - very lush!
Am I the only one who noticed the irony that the tiger is named Richard Parker, and Irrfan Khan (who plays the older version of Pi) was in Amazing Spiderman? lol
especially the bit where he goes forward in time 7 years and instantly turns into an adult.
Fun fact : your comment is 7 year old
I thought the movie was pretty good throughout. I can imagine that a lot of people would fall asleep to it, but I'm a big fan of movies with a lot of quiet, slow-paced scenes in them. The ending is what really made the movie great to me. It smacked me in the face like fat, but evidently not pregnant lady.
Best coming of age story has got to be Lord of the Rings. Frodo is EPIC!
Jeremy, that opening was pretty funny, lol. Also the plural of nemesis is nemeses, pronounced (nem - e - seas). I thought you would like to know that, lol.
awww Jeremy, how is this not Awesometacular? HOWwwwwww???
Jermey u replicate my thoughts exactly in all ur videos. U r awesome
Definitely an awesometacular movie for me
I had good reason too though, because every bit of your comment suggested my thoughts.
Favorite coming of age, Stand by Me
This.
I think the best part of the ending is that there isn't a definite ending. It's however you perceive it.
Jeremy, do you plan on reviewing 'the Perks of Being a Wallflower' (If it's still in cinemas) at some point?
I just wacthed this movie with my parents today and I was just crying because of how sad it was but it taught me a very important lesson don't lose faith even if it looks like your gonna die.
When i saw the trailer, i thought Pi was the tiger.
