- As we start our second week of this road trip we continue in an easterly direction. We make a short stop in Beaune the capital of the Burgundy wine region. We take a walk around Semur-en-Auxois before arriving at our next overnight stop, Vezelay. The old medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois sits high upon a granite cliff sited within a meander of the River Armancon. Great towers remain of a castle which formerly occupied the narrow neck of the meander. Vezeley climbs a prominent hill which is crowned by a Benedictine Abbey. The Abbey acquired relics that included those of Mary Magdalene. It became a centre of pilgrimage and regional importance. The Second Crusade was preached here by St Bernard of Clairvaux before King Louis VII and his Queen Eleanor. The Third Crusade saw the French King Philippe August and England`s Richard the Lionheart meet here before setting out for the Holy Land. Today this is still a place of pilgrimage and a favoured destination for tourists. The Abbey church is a fantastic example of the Burgundian Romanesque style. This is also one of the major starting points for pilgrims starting their journey to Santiago de Compostela. The site has World Heritage status and on our visit we were able to enjoy the wonderful views its elevated position affords.

The buildings are old! Modern buildings are more liveable but maybe not so characterful. There is so much to explore here.
Hi guys, Beaune looked really pretty as you walked around, I liked the outdoor eateries, so relaxing and the church was beautiful.
