We should remember those past sacrifices but also learn from them. Many fail to absorb the lessons of history. I think there ill always be selfish bullies in the world and sadly far too many people willing to believe their lies despite all the evidence they can see. These places of remembrance have so much to teach us of our failures as well as places to say thank you to those who gave their very existence so that our lives would be better.

A couple of folks have pointed out that we uploaded this on Memorial Day in the US. We have our main acts of Remembrance on the 11th November each year (and on the nearest Sunday). I think that we do need to be aware more often of the sacrifices so many made so that we could enjoy the prosperity and freedoms that are ours today. Our relative peace is challenged almost everyday and once lost that peace is so difficult to achieve once more. We enjoyed the afternoon in that pretty French village where ideas of conflict were so far from everyone`s minds and the Cathedral at Rouen was so amazing. We were pretty sad that this was the last day before returning to the UK. Still there is always (hopefully) a next time.

It is important to us not to forget those young people who lost their lives trying to ensure a better future for their fellow countrymen and for us who followed. Many of the freedoms we enjoy are ours due to their heroism. Yes, Rouen Cathedral was magnificent. A joy to explore.
Morning guys it must have been very thought provoking as you walked around the remnants of Mulberry Harbour and the British Memorial knowing what our soldiers did for our freedom. Loved the bustling market and the cathedral was stunning inside and out, so big ! These places always give us pause and time to remember how lucky we have been not to have suffered in the same way. These young people gave up everything in order to give subsequent generations a chance of something better. Such a sacrifice should never be forgotten. Moving Memorial! Wonderful sculptures capture the expressions of the soldiers and the materials used give a feeling of their pain and anguish. I always appreciate the listing of all the names of those lost. We had a relative die in WWI in France... it means a lot to the families to know that people remember and respect those that fought and died. Wonderful Cathedral and stained glass windows... great to walk down all the streets and alleys. Impressive and charming!! Wonderful trip! ⭐⭐⭐
Hello Jennifer. These memorials are often quite beautiful places and really are conducive to quiet contemplation. It really is important to remember their purpose and take time to remember those young lives cut short to protect our way of life. Hopefully too visitors will learn something about the futility and dreadful costs of war. The cost so clearly inscribed in the thousands of names on the walls of the monument. We usually read some of those names so they are not forgotten. Later that day we were in Rouen and its Cathedral was a truly remarkable example of the beauty that humans can create as opposed to the horrors of war. Why are so many people willing to go along with the bullies of this world who`s only interest is power. Hope we can continue to enjoy the beauty of our planet for sometime yet. We should never forget the events and sacrifices of our past and places like this provide opportunity to remember and learn. The King will be at this memorial on Wednesday (6th June) to honour the dead. The Cathedral in Rouen is truly amazing and worth lingering over to take in the detail on that astonishing west front. The "hospital2 is more properly a cemetery. The church of St Maclou found its graveyard overwhelmed by plague victims and so an "overflow" was created a short way away. This too was soon overwhelmed and as most victims were burned and the bones interred galleries were built around this second graveyard to store the bones. Bones in the courtyard were disinterred and also stored in the galleries where they could be seen. The galleries that can be seen today date from the mid fifteen hundreds. That clock. the Gros Horloge, dates from the thirteen hundreds with its mechanism having been created in 1389! Thanks for watching. Best wishes. Robert & Ivor.

You are so right. We have been very lucky to have lived in a place and at a time where relative peace has been the norm. It must have been a terrifying time for all those young people and those who survived will have borne the scars for the rest of their lives. We should all remember how fragile peace is when so many still feel violence is the answer to difficult problems. The Cathedral at Rouen was so much more magnificent than I remembered from previous visits long ago. I hope that some time I will return and spend the night here. There is so much more to appreciate. This beautiful memorial offered a glimpse into the town's history. The vibrant rainbow framing the pillars was a stunning sight to capture. It was a delight to experience the town's bustling energy. And of course, the cathedral and surrounding sites were equally impressive. Sounds like you had a fantastic trip!
We did not realise it was Memorial Day for you as we put this out. We have acts of Remembrance in France at this site on June 6th, the anniversary of the start of the landings. It will be led this year by the King despite his ongoing cancer treatments. Our main Act of Remembrance though is in November. The Great War (WWI) ended on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and there is a two minute national silence at that time. The main ceremony remembering the fallen takes place the following Sunday. I feel it is important to remember those who gave their lives so that we might have the freedoms we enjoy today.

Lovely content. We drove to France and visited this place while living in Europe. It was nice to learn about the past, and to stand on one of the fiercest battles in history is surreal and kinda eerie. Beautiful peaceful town❤

I would definitely recommend a stop in Rouen. The Cathedral is truly stunning. Better in my opinion than Notre Dame in Paris and without the crowds. Honfleur is a gem. On our last visit though we thought prices in restaurants a bit over the top but it was still so enjoyable. If you are heading this way from Paris might I also recommend Monet`s Garden at Giverney which would not be too far off route. Thanks for taking a look once more at our trip.

Thanks a lot for sharing. I just started the book "D-Day" by Stephen Ambrose which I am hoping to enjoy. The recent June 6 date reminded me of this supremely historic event.
Hope you enjoy the book. While working it was my privilege to know some of the veterans who were involved in the landings. Sadly they are no longer with us. To have come ashore here must have been a horrific experience.

I would definitely recommend a stop in Rouen. The Cathedral is truly stunning. Better in my opinion than Notre Dame in Paris and without the crowds. Honfleur is a gem. On our last visit though we thought prices in restaurants a bit over the top but it was still so enjoyable. If you are heading this way from Paris might I also recommend Monet`s Garden at Giverney which would not be too far off route. Thanks for taking a look once more at our trip.

Thanks a lot for sharing. I just started the book "D-Day" by Stephen Ambrose which I am hoping to enjoy. The recent June 6 date reminded me of this supremely historic event.
Hope you enjoy the book. While working it was my privilege to know some of the veterans who were involved in the landings. Sadly they are no longer with us. To have come ashore here must have been a horrific experience.
