Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.
I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate you subscribing to my channel and liking my videos. You can also find me on Facebook borderviewfarms and on Instagram @borderviewfarms

Always run row cleaners in float. I prefer intermesh (both front hole). At minimum I would run one in front hole one in back. Very odd to run them both in rear hole position.

Have you considered whether you should be checking those small fertilizer tubes for either complete or partial blockage? Some of these fert products are suspensions as opposed to solutions. In my experience suspensions are inclined to leave deposits behind as they dry out.
Frankly I'm not at all surprised that many areas of this machine are a little grubby,
Once a decision had been made by the previous owner to replace it they would be unlikely to be willing to spend both time and money cleaning, checking and fixing the machine and just want it gone off farm. Similarly I doubt the dealer would want to spend any significant time or money carrying detailed checks on the machines condition as they were probably screwed down hard on the deal to take it into stock to get a new one sold in its place. I would acknowledge though that it is not great that they did not check and remove those special brush belts that are out of shape with memory warp issues, I would not have expected a dealer to have located those broken parts and I would be really surprised if they agreed to replace them FOC!
It will be most interesting what other issues come to light as you work your way though the machine in great detail.
    Regards, Dan

I wonder what these planters will be like in 10/15 years , as far as every
thing working. Sure is a lot to go
    wrong.
You need to do a clinic on how to
properly take care of a planter.
The investment and what you expect
it to do , it needs to be top notch condition. A few more years the boys can start helping.

That's my neighbors old planter for sure. I watched them plant across a area where a old fence line was where they removed rock piles . remember. planting high speed is nice and all, but 8-10 mph and rocks will cause a lot more broken items. especially the conceal knives. more of a 5 mph system I believe. I think 7 mph or so would be a sweet spot in between wear and productivity. myself I still like 4.5 - 5 for planting.

Now you have to work on 24 rows 50% more than your previous planter. Where is Brock? I have neighbors that have put the Conceal precision planting on one side of their planter row. Thanks for the planter explanation tour👍.

You may answer this later in the video, but have you determined what the RTK antenna is for? I assume you're going to order spare row cleaner parts? If it goes there like it does here, don't order some and you'll have a failure or break one, do order them and you'll wonder why at the end of the season.

    • @BorderViewFarms

Not really. While we have rocks it's not like some other places. I've never really broken anything on the planter due to rocks so maybe there will be some but I'm not all that concerned about it.

    • @nickshamplo7489

Uan 28% is the nitrogen that will get ran in the 2 by 2 by 2 2" on each side of the seed and 2" or 1.5'' below the surface. It comes out from the knifes that are in the gauge wheels. The second fertilizer will be a low rate fertilizer that goes in the seed trench on the seed.

putting a 300-400 gallon tank on the planter will cause more pinch row compaction. you be better off putting a tank on front of the tractor and removing the weights from the tractor to keep the tractor weight the same so you do not increase compaction.

    • @BorderViewFarms
      @BorderViewFarms  Год назад +1

I don't agree with this. First, the tractor weights are coming off regardless, and a 300 gallon front tank would add about 3-4 times as much weight and what's on it currently. Second, the frame weight distribution system will transfer that weight to the planter wings and reduce the amount on the main frame tires while in the field.
