Hi Guys, sorry about the position error of some of the video. I didnt see it until I had finished capturing video and it was too late to re-shoot everything. Also, just a quick note about the shields issue. I realize that you could get more shields than 300-400mj but I was using that as a base. And yes, I do realize I could have installed SCB's, but I tried to spec mostly for hull tanking instead.
The Chieftain was designed 2 evade damage its speed n manoeuvrability r its strong points use that 2 your advantage thats also y its perfect 4 fixed weapons
Vindicator Jones how do you feel about it now that it has a level 6 slot for Shields? All the videos, even the wiki prepared me for only level 5 Shields but when I bought it today I was pleasantly surprised to find I could put a 6 in it :-)
The chieftain is my favourite ship, as a mid-game player. My first combat ship was an eagle, then a Viper III, Viper IV, then I took a break from combat by buying a DBS and going 1k ly out of the bubble, came back with about 10 mil credits, so bought an asp, sold the DBS, went exploring in the asp, came back, bought a vulture and did a CG with it, realised I had enough to buy a chieftain. I've flown an FDL at my uncle's house before but prefer the chieftain, just for the slight turning advantage I feel like it has over the fdl.
The glass, the glass.... that's the one thing I wish they would make better. It's like the spent all the development funds on the hull and just grabbed a off cut bit of glass from a greenhouse as they had no money left.
Go with a A-rated life support to reduce the problem. Other way could be to use repair drones. But than you need two internal compartments for this. Or avoid to get hit. ;)
I don't know why more people don't A-rate life support, especially since you can mod it to be lightweight. I know you can mod D-rated life support for lightweight too, but most of the time I don't see anyone do that and A-rated life support can go under an unmodded D-rated mass.
My solution is a biweave shield engineered to resistance augmented and an engineered reinforced shield booster for rather strong shielding. In the military compartments, make 2 of them module reinforcements and your glass will never break again.
Hey Jones, I'm on the Xbox 1 and only recently started fighting with the cheiftain. I think this is a pretty fair review as far as pve goes. But when considering that this is made to more specifically a response to the thargoids, I have to disagree with your gripes about the shield/hull balance. Keeping in mind that the thargoids and thargons(especially) weapons penetrate and almost entirely ignore shields, high hull tanking is a pretty brilliant move on frontiers part. That being said, I have taken this out to a couple hazres zones and done fairly well when keeping low shield capacity in mind. But I always seem to get rooster blocked on making high rewards when my cockpit breaks after only taking down two anacondas😂. All in all though, another great review!
Hope the test streams and quick uploads on new content is a sign that you are looking for an active 2018 on RUclips. The community only benefits from your contributions. Thanks.
I really want to try and put more effort into what I do. The problem is it takes quite a large chunk of time to make content, and because I also freelance, its hard to balance them both, and I have to put priority to what pays the bills. lol. But thanks, I really appreciate your feedback. :)
Because of the easy to hit cockpit i would use a A-rated life support. Low shields and a big front cockpit is not optimal for a combat ship. But with A rated life support it should be ok. And i'm not sure if you should compare it with the FDL. It is more in line with the FAS or the Clipper.
Got my chieftain today and love it. The glass is a problem.....never broke all the way.but had me concerned. I also love the way it pitches as well. I felt I could get behind the enemy ship faster than I could in my vulture. Love the way it looks and the sound is awesome as well. Right now, this is my favorite ship!
I didn't expect a video from you on the chieftain so soon! :) what a pleasant surprise! You saved my sunday lol great work, as always. Keep it up and greetings from Germany
Kieren Sprackett well, I didn't expect Videos from either this soon. They are both doing great work and I am still from Germany and would like to greet them. I'm sorry, I don't see your point
Hey VJ. I do like flying the Chieftain. Responsive and responds well; easy to fly and quick. Reminds me of my FDL. Any quirks can probably be compensated for by pilot's techiques and ability. I'm using 2x 3D Beams, Turreted with 4x seeker missiles and it packs a nice punch. Lots of hull. I will be comparing this to my FDL over time. Likely to buy one when it drops.
The Chieftain has replaced the FDL as my favourite ship for medium class combat. It has decently strong armour, and with proper pip management it’s easy to keep shields up for extended periods
I fell in love with this ship for some reason... I added two Guardian Gauss cannons on the top and the Guardian plasma caster on the bottom... Also added the guardian power plant... All this creates heat, so my 3 small weapons are turreted efficient beams with experimental upgrade heat vent... Its amazing, its very fun to fly, it looks soo cool in graphite and for the price you get a lot...
I've got my Chieftain (ACS Hephaestus) rigged for trading and light combat. It's battle-worthy with 84 T of cargo space, so for me it's functionally similar to a more maneuverable Keelback with large hardpoints. I've kinda bastardized the poor ship, but I've honestly fallen in love with it on my grind to the Python.
I love my Chieftain VJ. For me it competes strongly with the Vulture for agility and, as you say the pitch response is excellent. I'll be trying different hardpoint loadouts but currently running with 2 large Pulses and 4 Burst lasers for close up work. I agree that the shields drop very quickly and have changed mine from bi-weave to a 5A. It definitely needs a fuel scoop as, although I've got my jump range up to 29.25Ly I can only manage 4 jumps at a time. I'm sure that'll go down once I add Mil Composite bulkheads. A first-class combat ship though....
I did a one for one test between my favorite ship (FAS) and the Chieftain. Pulled all of my core components which are G5 rated. While the top speed is slightly better, the boost speed went from 510m/s on the FAS to 480m/s on the Chieftain which makes a big difference when spacing and positioning. But the the biggest problem I have is the drift. For the exact same components, the drift is insane and can't turn on a dime. For these reasons I won't be picking up the ship when my FAS just feels tighter overall which is crucial for positioning. On a side note, the cockpit view just feels too cramped as well. What I really do like are the three small hardpoints where you can fit three rails perfectly on. Aside from the medium hardpoint, everything is very nicely positioned. Final thoughts, it is a good ship that makes a perfect rail build. I'll stick to my FAS which can escape any fight it needs to but can also position much more comfortably with it's tighter turn radius which includes FA Off drift boosting. There is a slight DPS loss but I'm much more likely to stay behind a target and pull off more consistent shots. Overall if you're stuck between the two, choose whatever suits your style more.
I should elaborate a bit more on the ending. Was in a rush at the time. If you prefer to avoid boost turning the Chieftain is the way to go. Blue zone turning in it is really good. The FAS handles like a dream when using boost and some FA Off to position right behind something so if you have a good handle on FA Off, the FAS will dance for you. Both have really good weapon hardpoint locations and similar armor values at the end of the day so if you don't have a preference on any of the above, think about what kind of load out you want and decide from there. Personally I rock three PAs at the bottom to form a literal plasma cutter and at the top either a large frag cannon or medium feedback cascade railgun.
Its why I said, the trick to the chieftain is avoid boost turning and fly it in the blue.. In the blue the chieftain is amazing and I feel can out dog fight the FAS and FDL, but of course I would have to test this.
I'd agree with you there. From my tests I found the same thing. Compared to the FAS I want to say it turns even better in the blue zone and it has great distributor management.
This looks so much better than every other ship in Elite Dangerous. It almost looks as good as a Star Citizen ship until you see the cockpit and it looks like every other ED cockpit including that little car thing
The Alliance's FAS, huh? With a quite intimidating boost sound. Like it. Sounds like a Draugr Deathlord in Skyrim. :) Hard to tell which ship is better, but I'd opt for the FAS. I'm not sure about the weapon power but assume that two medium hard points of the FAS are still better than 3 small ones plus one medium, due to the (hull) damage penalty of three small weapons against every ship larger than... small. Or maybe they're level. But at the end of the day the FAS can still masslock a Chieftain (14 vs. 13) but not the other way round. So, it's harder to run for the Chieftain if things go south. I like this idea.
another great video (that i somehow missed >.>)! love your view with what you are doing with the thrusters. I bought and loaded one out, flew it into hrez, went back and sold it. don't get me wrong, it's decent but i got an FAS already lol
I've yet to try this ship. But by the looks of it she'll suit my flight assist/off hull tank only style nicely. Drift is a boon to those whom know how to use it. I routinely run with AFM's so the windscreen will be less of a problem. The top mounted hardpoints will suit a bit of multiplayer action moreso than my other fave the Dropship.
Great ship, didn't like the landing gear coming from the rear engines, that's just my two cent gripe, I will be purchasing mine shortly. Great review.👍
This is a great review. I definitely feel the lack of shields in the Chieftain. I didn't expect it to do very well against pirates, because it was built to fight Thargoid scouts. Still, I do wish there could be more meaningful upgrades for hull tanks that would make them a viable option along with shield tanking. More module reinforcement would be incredible. Losing your canopy glass can end your fight immediately - even if your hull is still ok.
I am doing a revisit on the Chieftain this weekend. Frontier made some changes to the canopy glass, and after properly engineering the Chieftain I can honestly say it is utterly brilliant. Keep an eye out for the video next week
I initially tried this, but got lot of over heating issues. However engineering them will obviously help in this area. This is something I am going to look more into at a later stage.
Vindicator Jones yep, engineering is the key, a lot of people in PVP will just roll for a G1 Long range as you don’t get any damage drop off but you can get a thermal reduction secondary of -50% and it’s only 1 sulphur so you can spam roll until you get it, or just go sturdy which has a natural thermal reduction, then go feedback cascade and / or super penetrator
utility count bugs me, I think low shield is great, it goes perfectly with engineered bi-weave couple that with extreme maneuverability for a ship this size... shoot & dodge, I think this ship is better on pvp combat rather than pve.
I just got the chieftain today. I have to say I love it. As for the top reasons I have four. Number one, it is fairly priced at 18 Million and it maxed out costs about 55 million. Number two, the chieftain is similar to the vulture only better. It’s nimble and has medium hull strength/shields. Number three, I’m honestly impressed by how many hardpoints it has. If I were flying a tank version of the vulture I definitely like to have an extra medium hardpoint and three small ones. And finally I absolutely loveHow it looks. I love the concept of how the engines stick out like they do. I honestly think this is a big improvement over the ships like the beluga with those unnecessary fins that serve no purpose. The thing looks like a freaking kick ass monster with some nice lines to it. I would totally recommend this to anyone who intends to work on their combat rank or wants to murder condas
I will be doing an update on the Chieftain as they did some minor tweaks to it during beta, and on the whole its now better. I have been puttering around a hazres in an un-engineered one and its been ok. Firepower is still lacking IMHO but thinking of it as a beefed up vulture does ring true. Comparing it to an FDL dosent work, but then again as you said, its priced quite low and makes a good stepping stone from Vulture > Chieftain > FDL
I’d say that’s fair. I think i will be using this ship even long after I get a conda. One thing I forgot to mention was the power. I love that improvement from most other fighters. Power capacity is huge and allows for pretty much any weapon or system style you want. This ship gives you quite a lot of leg room in that sense.
But regardless, with this ship you MUST max your shields. Buy the biggest generator for the biggest slot. They are not very powerful. I also use each of my four utility slots for boosters. You may want chaff launcher if you don´t want to be locked onto but I don´t see that as a big issue most of the time.
This thing needs a speed buff and a wicked defense buff to ever be competitive in the PVP scene. I'd like to see 700-800 shields (with bis) and roughly 2500 hull. Basically a scaled up Vulture. But unfortunately, if they don't buff the speed and defense, this ship will fall by the wayside for most serious combat pilots.
nice video i play too elite, nice new patch there was coming in game, i really like that new material update in game, im flying my self in game t-10 defender 😀🙋👍👍👍👍
Hello mate , I agree there shouldn’t be any SMALL WEAPONS ON THIS SHIP, also COCKPITS GLASS IS TOO EASY TO BREAKTHROUGH ON A COMBATANT. LAST A COURSE SHIELDS ARE WAY TO LOW. Good video still , thanks
Love your vids. In the future choose a module to target when fighting and be a little bit more agile with pips. When not firing you don’t need pips to weapons. You were shieldless far longer than you needed to be. Your shielding is low and I agree with your POV on the chieftains weaknesses but on the other hand you could avoid some hits in the first place with your maneuvering and also good pip management. Lastly, afmu on all ships with weak canopies or hull reliant. Keep up the great vids. Cheers!
When I am flying on my own, I am far more focused, but trying to talk, film and fight, its just all too much for my attention span.. lol I could do videos of me completely focused on combat, but they would get boring, But cheers :)
im not hating on you but.... i don't think you know who your talking to. May i suggest you check jones videos on combat.... coz if u pvp'd him you'd be reduced to to stardust just saying ps keep up the good work vinicator jones u taught me how to 'do combat correctly'
Nice video and nice ship, but the canopy makes it useless for combat. Even at 98% of hull and with almost all modules at 100%, the canopy was blown away several times with me. If this is fixed, it has the potential to be a fantastic addition to the game. If not, I will keep with FDL an Python as my preferred mid ships. O7 Commanders!
i really, really want to love this ship. It looks so awesome, easily my favorite looking ship... But as a primary bounty hunter, such flimsy shields is a huge let down... And all those small hard points really irks me. Smalls just shouldnt exist on a medium ship. I'd be wildly happy if they ditched all the small hard points for a slightly upgraded shield (I'd be happy if it was at least in vulture range), and just 1 additional medium.
Not really.. during my tests, even with 4 pips to engines, the chieftain was really skittery (is that a word? lol) keeping the throttle in the blue is the absolutely best way to fly this.
Nice work mate, less military modules utilized equals better vertical thrusters through lack of weight, or does it ? Better shields with balanced thruster weight and fly a shoot and scoot profile. At this initial stage it's good but it has to offer more to compete with the FAS.
FrankMurphy it's not a weight issue. I've light weighted everything and put on god-roll drives and the thing still slides all over the map. The Chieftain hates to be even slightly out of the blue zone, and punishes you severely for breaking this rule.
I have one question. My loadout consists of two large multicannons, a medium burst laser, and 3 small bursts. Do plasma accelerators do more hull damage or do they inflict more shield damage? Is it a mix? I want to put plasmas on mine like you did once I get a couple million more credits but I´m doing just fine with the large multis and bursts. I want to know if it has any benefits.
It's a very interesting coincidence that you and I chose the same loadout. I too use 3 PAs and 3 multicannons. I love the power it's got for dealing with large ships. Makes a perfect vessel for Pirate Lord Assassination or Terrorist Leader Assassination missions.
You mentioned the small weapon penalties to medium and large ships - where are you getting those numbers from? That surprises me, especially with something like the Enforcer Cannon as I've killed a few player Anacondas with them on my Sidewinder so it definitely doesn't seem like it has a penalty. I also say that yeah, your score of 4/10 for defense is Beyond:Absurd (see what I did there) as setup as a proper hull tank it's impressive how much punishment it can take. With a class 4 and 2 module reinforcement I have 3200 armor and I haven't yet done my base hull other than Reactive (yes, all my HRPs are G5 Heavy Duty). While that's not good for PvE bounty hunting it's fantastic for PvP combat and will likely replace the FAS for the time to come. Making it a mixed hull/shield would be good for the noobs but far less interesting for the real combat community.
Its quite possible that the Enforcer canon does not have those penalties applied. As I said in the video, Canons and Railguns do not have this penalty. But sorry, my score for its defensive capabilities stand. It maybe a great hull tanker, but it is still extremely vulnerable to module damage and even more so cockpit glass breakage. I love the chieftain its a great little dogfighter, but it is far from perfect. But as I said, this is just my view. Some people are happy to live with that kind of setup, but for me, compared to other similar ships, its defensive capabilities are very poor, hence the lowish score.
We'll have to agree to disagree on the defensive capabilities, definitely seems like the combat community doesn't share this opinion. While I agree on the canopy it's not nearly as bad as say the Vulture but granted that's a small ship. As for module damage it's no different from the FAS so I'm curious what score you'd give the FAS on a 1-10, if the same 4/10 I suppose that would at least be consistent. As for the penalty again where do you reference this? I'm not saying you're wrong but I've never seen something like that and have 2500+ hours flying mostly small ships, primarily a G5 Sidewinder or iEagle for PvP combat and do just fine against the big ships. I've heard statements like this before on other things but have never once seen any real proof of it so have always believed it a myth. So where does this information come from?
From the developers : forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/170205-Discussion-with-Mark-Allen-on-damage-and-defenses or forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/170205-Discussion-with-Mark-Allen-on-damage-and-defenses?p=2857043&viewfull=1#post2857043
Thanks Kevlar, that's VERY helpful. So it's not really the weapon that's different it's due to the hull hardness rating of the ship that's really what's factor in here. That makes more sense than the way I'd read it before as it's not the ship/weapon size it's how the hull hardness factors into the DPS that's the big difference. Again thanks for passing that along.
Kind of .Those were the initial posts, they (devs) kind of tweaked things a bit later on, but i didn't had time to search for them. Any way presently, generally speaking and notice that we are always talking about damage to the hull - this is not a factor in regards damage versus shields, if the armor penetration of the weapon is not higher than the hull hardness : a small weapon will do 33% less dmg to a medium hull and 66 % less damage to a large hull a medium weapon will do 33% less damage to large sized hull a large weapon will have no penalty and the same happens will a huge weapon. As you probably know since all large sized ships have a hull hardness of at least 54 ( type 7) or higher while (talking from memory here ) no small weapon has that kind of penetration with the exception of missiles, mines , torpedos and rail guns. and the same happens to medium sized weapons, with the same exceptions plus plasma accelerators, and so it is simply easy to use the Hull size vs weapon size instead looking into hull hardiness. And they are right, in the end it works like that!
THE THRUSTERS: Aside from the rear landing gears being housed in the rear thrusters (jeez)... Why are the thrusters (intake, radiators and all) stacked nearly in front of one another? What happens if the ship turns or pitches laterally? Imagine the flame of a candle when you turn the candle on its side. Does the flame of that candle stay straight, no matter what? Does anyone have an explanation? I love this game, but I can't figure out why they did this. Thanks in advance.
But if any ship WERE to be capable of boost turning, it SHOULD be the chieftain. It’s got freaking engine gimbals, it can point all its thrust in any direction it needs to. It should be the last ship out there that’d ever drift when boosting.
Why is landing gears on thrusters a design flaw? I't looks great and as a industrial designer i say it's verry cleaver and functionally design IMHO. Is this a personal opinion or do you have some real argument about it? :)
Because it retracts into where the engines are ;) Its not a big deal, just looks odd if your looking at it from a mechanical perspective, but from an aesthetic point of view its very cool.
Are you saying it's not possible to retract to them in same module where the engines are? Why? I don't see this is a problem. There is bunch of people in internet who are complaining about this, but haven't seen a good argument why, so far. ;)
I love the price and role of this ship but i feel like fas is better in every way. At least for cz. I will buy fas i think but i need to grind the fed rank because i didnt do it even once. Now i flying in vulture but im looking for change because of possibility useing PA and railguns i love even in pve. And with vulture useing railguns or PA is just dumb. So i dunno maybe someone can help me. Anyway have a good day/night!
Vindicator Jones if things are like that i will go chieftain railguns + MC all the way. One thing in chieftain that i dont really like is fragile cockpit. On most videos glass in cockpit dies in seconds.
When are they going to give us decent shields on a medium fighter???give us 6 utility mounts and shields at least as good as fer de lance. Sields are useless on this ship hull tank. Anti thargoid ship give me a break. I love the look of the ship ..weapon hardpoints get rid of c1s
7 billion in total assets... But thats nothing, some commanders have over 10-15 billion.. Just play the game, and try and find lucrative passenger runs is my best advice. Even after the nerf, some runs can net around 50-60 million if you have one of the big 3
What VJ said. Also, you can try laser mining for painite. You can rake in 100-150 million per hour in a python, 200-250 million in an hour and a half to two hours in an anaconda, and 400 million in two and a half to three hours in a type 9 or cutter.
Handling 8/10?? Clearly you haven't flown this thing in a canyon for a static obstacle reference frame. It handles like an FA Off Cutter when you edge even a little out of the blue zone. You don't notice this in space because of the lack of reference frame. Also you blame yourself in this video way too much, the ship itself is an unruly brick in terms of handling, but tricks you into into thinking it's your fault because it points in the direction you want. Think you may need to do a more objective review with direct side by side comparisons to its class competition: the FDL/FAS. Imo lateral thrusters need a huge buff just to make this safe to fly near planets, otherwise exploration trips will be very short indeed.
No, no I havent. My score is based purely on combat handling, not for anything else. The reason why I give it such a high score is because when you fly it in the blue and avoid boosting, the chieftain is just magic to get your weapons back on target. For everyday flying and planetary flying though, I found the chieftain to act like its on roller skates. However I standby my score based purely on its combat performance. In a dog fight the chieftain is really fun to fly.
Frontier said this thing would be able to *evade* fire, which to my mind is a false advertizing with this amount of straight line drift. Even if you just turn too fast *while in the blue zone*, you'll drift over a km away from the direction you wanted to go. Blue zone agility only confers the ability to point the ship, and also concedes the ability to control the range of the encounter. This kind of agility is only useful for face-tanking tactics, and can only be used to dodge opponents who also agree to fly in the blue zone... in other words, lobotomized NPCs. For PVP the agility is purely for out-DPSing while face tanking, which imo can be done much better in actual big ships that shine in this role, like the FA-Off-orbiting-perma-boost Anaconda.
Honestly, this ship bothers me quite a bit. - Same price as FAS, similar armor and shields as FAS, similar agility as FAS. Basically, it's a rethemed FAS with some minor performance differences and that swaps an optional internal slot for a military slot. This seems just like really lazy design on the part of Frontier. There's absolutely nothing special or unique about this ship other than how she looks. - *Another* combat ship? Really? ... REALLY? No one has been asking for this much focus on combat ships, even with all the Thargoids flying around. On the other hand, the community has been clamouring for a new dedicated deep exploration ship for YEARS and we've seen nothing. If the Krait turns out to be another combat ship, I will lose my shit.
I'll take a non federal dedicated combat ship like this, long before another Lakon explorer honestly. Too many multi rollers with bad convergence, I welcome Chieftain, to the fold.
FAS is a rank grind ship, FDL is more expensive (and the king of PvP heavy fighters anyway). Chieftain sits between the two. Having a non-rank grind ship that is also a cheaper PvP heavy fighter alternative is great and fills a niche. As others have said, exploration will be getting a revamp in the final Beyond release later this year. Why bring out new exploration vessels before then?
I really wich they do away with engineering, yes it eliminates part of the content and a lot of grinding, but inso much as everyone can and eventually will max out their mods; What's the point? I mean if everyone was mandated to only "A" gradeing everything vs everyone being able to Grade 5 ing everything, nothing would change except for content and the grinding required to do so. The only difference between two "A" graded crafts doing battle and two identical engineered crafts doing battle is the skill of the pilots involved. I personally don't use any engineered mods of anykind, strickly "A" grades. And even though I can tell that some NPC's crafts are engineered, still have no problems doing battle with crafts that match or are less than mine. Obiviously the engineering doesn't help them. I mean why does the game have Elite pilots flying Sidewinders, when you'll never see a elite rated human pilot flying one while doing combat. If they were going to do anything to engineering then making it possible to fly simular to what any NPC ship can do, would be a much better form of engineering. Name one ship engineered or not that can stop on a dime, rotate 180 degrees and approach you head on in less time than you could ever hope for. I'd be happy just to be able to stop on a dime and rotate. Tis ironic how NPC's can be seen flying from one edge of the radar screen to the other in less than a second and yet in battle can't out run smaller less powerful ships, but can do stops and turns that defy physicis. I mean there's no way that a conda can manover the same as a sidewinder, but NPC's ships do it consistantly. The only difference is the tanking ability and weapon availability changes. The flight physics are exactly the same. Once figured out, NPC's are easy peasy with nothing but an "A" graded ship of simular size. The only difference is the tanking. Apparently NPC's ships have no mass effects to deal with. An object such as a Conda when compared to a Sidewinder should not handle the same in flight, but does.
While I appreciate you going through the effort of making this video, I have my doubts about the usefulness of a review based on a ship that in no way is representative of what other people will experience. IMO it would've been a better review had you used stock unengineered parts.
I see it the other way around. A review based on a ship that is not engineered will not provide me much insight on the full potential of the ship. That said this review doesn't address this, nor does it address you wanting a review of a ship that is not engineered. He's got a strange ship where some of the modules are engineered and some of them are not. For instance, he has one shield booster engineered and the other two aren't. His class 5 hull reinforcement is engineered and the rest aren't. Taking this into consideration there is still validity to the review regarding the points he makes during the video on how strong he thinks the ship is. He brings constructive criticism rather than just saying, "This ship is awesome! When the update comes around I am definitely buying one." It is due to this constructive criticism at the end of the video that I feel this is a solid review overall.
I realize this was a hodge podge build, but it was done basically to say hey this is what the chieftain can kinda do if you upgrade it a little without maxing it.. I could have gone with a vanilla build, but then others would be saying why didnt you engineer it? In the end I cant win either way, so I tried to go a middle of the road build with some left over modules I had in storage. In the end my comments still reflect the issues with the chieftain regardless if it was stock or fully maxed out.
All the videos, even the wiki prepared me for only level 5 Shields but when I bought it today I was pleasantly surprised to find I could put a 6 in it :-)
Forgive my ignorance but I kept hearing you say "FTL", what does that mean?
Mr Hyde FDL Fer De Lance
The chieftain is my favourite ship, as a mid-game player. My first combat ship was an eagle, then a Viper III, Viper IV, then I took a break from combat by buying a DBS and going 1k ly out of the bubble, came back with about 10 mil credits, so bought an asp, sold the DBS, went exploring in the asp, came back, bought a vulture and did a CG with it, realised I had enough to buy a chieftain. I've flown an FDL at my uncle's house before but prefer the chieftain, just for the slight turning advantage I feel like it has over the fdl.
I'd love a voice pack that automatically plays Running in the 90's when the Chieftan starts drifting...
2 module reinforcements = no broken canopy.
The glass, the glass.... that's the one thing I wish they would make better. It's like the spent all the development funds on the hull and just grabbed a off cut bit of glass from a greenhouse as they had no money left.
I know.. lol.. one time my shields went down, I got down to 95% hull and then my cockpit glass blew out.. Hopefully they will adjust this.
Nice to see another aussie elite player on youtube, have a sub and g'day from the Gold Coast
Looks like an AFM is a must with that fragile canopy
I am hoping frontier will adjust this during beta
Keep it up and greetings from Germany
lol, thank you kind sir. I am trying to put some more time into my videos as I am not so busy with work at the moment.
You said that on obsidian ants video too.
Its amazing, its very fun to fly, it looks soo cool in graphite and for the price you get a lot...
your review comments are spot on! I feel the same way you do about the chief
Even since I saw the Chieftain and saw that it was an Alliance ship I wanted to fly it with large plasma accelerators. Nice to see it in action.
I still use mine, dirty drives and all frag cannons with various effects. 10/10 recommend
Nice to see some new videos. I like the onscreen Thrusters indicator. Thanks for the vid.
another great video (that i somehow missed >.>)! love your view with what you are doing with the thrusters.
I dont mind the drift, as you said, when you know how the ship behaves, you can use that to your advantage.
Great ship, didn't like the landing gear coming from the rear engines, that's just my two cent gripe, I will be purchasing mine shortly. Great review.👍
Think all the sliding around is caused by the weight of the military grade armour + all the HRMs. The same happens with the FAS and the Vulture.
Sounds awesome. Can't wait!
3 small rail guns are perfect along with 1 medium and 2 large efficient plasmas 👍
Not in the beta and not in future though right, no secondaries. So get em all rolled now. Sulphur, sulphur and more sulphur..
Cmdr Snake why does a railgun have damage falloff in space?
clay lewis don’t know.......ask FD
utility count bugs me,
I think low shield is great, it goes perfectly with engineered bi-weave couple that with extreme maneuverability for a ship this size...
shoot & dodge, I think this ship is better on pvp combat rather than pve.
How much did this whole outfit cost and what is the insurance? Great video as well. Really helped!
those 3 small hardpoints just scream
ENFORCER CANNONS >:D
very informative video mate, thank you so much
I just got the chieftain today.
I´ll be honest, I don´t know what bi-weave shields are. They sound related to thargoid hunting which I haven´t tried yet
I'm farming money for the Chieftain atm using my ASP Explorer.
I will fit the Chieftain as a Combat Explorer.
nice video i play too elite, nice new patch there was coming in game, i really like that new material update in game, im flying my self in game t-10 defender 😀🙋👍👍👍👍
Vindicator Jones yeah makes sense. Either way keep it up. Really enjoy your vids.
im not hating on you but....
i don't think you know who your talking to. May i suggest you check jones videos on combat....
coz if u pvp'd him you'd be reduced to to stardust
just saying
ps keep up the good work vinicator jones u taught me how to 'do combat correctly'
Ian Robertson o boi an an unnecessary fanboy response. Lol!
Hey mate, are you from New Zealand too? Great videos, really helpful for my start heheh 👍
Well i learned more about how to do good combat moreso than how good the ship is haha
Hey, as long as you got something out of it, thats awesome! :)
I welcome this ship 100% when does it come out
Finally alliance getting some love!
Also you can overheat this ship super fast. I made a build that in 4 seconds you are above 100% heat.
3 pips each to WEP and ENG would sort out the slight thruster issue I reckon. Your WEP was never empty on 4
Not really.. during my tests, even with 4 pips to engines, the chieftain was really skittery (is that a word? lol) keeping the throttle in the blue is the absolutely best way to fly this.
Hello mate, question do you have a video on thruster turning.how do you practice this.
Question: does it pitch beautifully?
good video - looking forward, are you planning to skip the music tract? that would be lovely.
Could this be kitted as an exploration ship? if you're getting 20ly jump with military composites it might be possible
How are the AIs on this ship more maneuverable then FDL
It's a very interesting coincidence that you and I chose the same loadout. I too use 3 PAs and 3 multicannons. I love the power it's got for dealing with large ships. Makes a perfect vessel for Pirate Lord Assassination or Terrorist Leader Assassination missions.
Great video
Hi! I'm just wondering where did you buy that millitary armour for Chieftain..? Tnx
Found it: Hepa system, Watt-Evans depot (planet 4a)
I like the chieftain a lot but I really really hate the boost sound
it looks like the Raza from Dark Matter with skinny wings.
RIP Dark Matter.. Me and the missus were really getting into it, and then they just cancel the series.. Still annoyed about it..
Vindicator Jones THEY CANCELED IT?!?!?! NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Any way presently, generally speaking and notice that we are always talking about damage to the hull - this is not a factor in regards damage versus shields, if the armor penetration of the weapon is not higher than the hull hardness :
a small weapon will do 33% less dmg to a medium hull and 66 % less damage to a large hull
a medium weapon will do 33% less damage to large sized hull
a large weapon will have no penalty and the same happens will a huge weapon.
Hey vindicator, do you use a hotas, and if so, which one?
Oh indeedy I do.. I use the X-56
What special effect do you have on those PAs? Thanks!
Just efficient. I find its the better option that suits my style of play :)
Chieftan hardpoints should have been 2 small, 2 medium, 2 large.....
I LOVE ELITE DANGEROUS AND THE ELITE DANGEROUS HORIZENS DLC
150 tons plating, what the fuck? Even the big 3 don't have plating that heavy
I've been looking for a chieftan for ages and haven't been able to find one, does anyone know where is a good place to get one? Thanks
it slides WAY to much, it's worse then most ships, especially for all those engine pods.
Its why I said, this ship needs to be flown "in the blue" boost turning and max throttle dosent work on the chieftain.
But if any ship WERE to be capable of boost turning, it SHOULD be the chieftain. It’s got freaking engine gimbals, it can point all its thrust in any direction it needs to. It should be the last ship out there that’d ever drift when boosting.
What stick are you using these days?
Im using the Saitek x-56 and I like it. A lot of people seemed to have had trouble with theirs, but mine hasnt missed a beat.
How on earth did you get to 2 Billion credits?
Why is landing gears on thrusters a design flaw? I't looks great and as a industrial designer i say it's verry cleaver and functionally design IMHO. Is this a personal opinion or do you have some real argument about it? :)
Because it retracts into where the engines are ;) Its not a big deal, just looks odd if your looking at it from a mechanical perspective, but from an aesthetic point of view its very cool.
Are you saying it's not possible to retract to them in same module where the engines are? Why? I don't see this is a problem. There is bunch of people in internet who are complaining about this, but haven't seen a good argument why, so far. ;)
can you send me a link to that enemy thuster add on you have on your screen . maybe that will help me get better at combat
Umm, actually thats my thruster position thats on screen ;)
Vindicator Jones where is that option in game?
It isnt, its an overlay I use when recording video.
Vindicator Jones okay well time for more testing keep up the right videos thanks
Does this ship require rank with Alliance?
Nope
I love the price and role of this ship but i feel like fas is better in every way. At least for cz. I will buy fas i think but i need to grind the fed rank because i didnt do it even once. Now i flying in vulture but im looking for change because of possibility useing PA and railguns i love even in pve. And with vulture useing railguns or PA is just dumb. So i dunno maybe someone can help me. Anyway have a good day/night!
Check out my latest video, where I revisit the Chieftain. Personally, I think its much better than the FAS
Does anyone know if this ship can be bought on the regular version of the game? or only in the beta version. If so where can i purchase it from?
Right now, only on Beta. But once beta has finished it will appear live in the game.
What size is this thing again? Will it replace the python?
Medium Sized.. And no.. This is a combat specific ship, the python is multirole
Vindicator Jones well I'm going to try anyway 😃 I would hate to find out that it just fits in between two other ships that I already have.
How in the hell do you get 2 Billion credits wtf..!
Could you be kind enough to give me your UI Scheme?
With all due respect to you and the content / is the music absolutely necessary?
Why does he let the ship scan him? I just start shooting.
Because it is much more preferable to shoot at a target from behind than head on.. For many reasons.
Ok cool. Then again after engineers I have been killing things in PvE too fast to notice while having Ridiculous shields.
Karl Barbosa my hope is that they're saving some new explorer design's for when they revamp exploration later this year.
Karl Barbosa from old elite the krait was a lightspeed fighter. Idk if that'll change much.
Karl Barbosa you must be new here, the Krait is an old girl in the world of elite and will definitely be a combat oriented ship.
Gimpy fdl why do I want this.
FLIGHT ASSIST OFF
I think it ranks below the vulture tbh
That ship seems mediocre at best to me. I'd rather get a FDL or a FAS instead.
"In the end I cant win either way" - Yeah I guess there is truth in that :p thanks for the video regardless!
