No, I think most players hate it because of its terrible bosses, shit hitboxes, unfair enemy placements(SOTFS makes this issue even more apparent) and convoluted and unintresting lore. The whole feel of DS2 is like the devs thought "Cant make it interesting? MAKE IT HARD".
tbh the hate from the playerbase is not because they bad at this game its just simply because it felt not like Dark Souls. The Lore was shit, had not rly a connection to anything and then Dark Souls 3 connect the Lore again. Dark Souls 2 is simply hated for the thing the Team done with the game. Even the graphics downgrade ... I mean cmon u cant say the players who hate ds2 are bad as fuck. No its just a shitty Dark Souls game, but a great game overall. But Lorewise a total desaster.
yeh some of DS2 mechanics are wonky. a big one is your SL is based off of souls you have gained, not spent on lvl's. makes sense as far as people not having op weapons vs a low lvl person.... but they can just have people drop those for them and negate that. it gets really jacked when trying to play co op and your friend, or in my case my cousin.... is bad and dies a lot, so their respective power is trash compared to yours and they cant go grind or they out lvl you and cant find your sign then lol. he had a bad time trying to use me to help him in co op because he was constantly losing souls and having to stay weak to not out SL me, or trying to make me grind souls.... ugh

Yeah his left arm was pretty messed up in DKS1, I always assumed it got crushed fighting Manus so he had to give his shield to Sif and switch hands. And besides if the item description says he was left handed, then he was left handed. Lets give it a meh and move on.
