Making a chair has been one of my goals for a long time and now I've completed my first one!
I thoroughly enjoyed making it, I learned heaps and will definitely make more in the future. It was a challenge to make it out of scrapwood certainly not as nice to use for this project as more suited wood with a straighter grain but I managed.
I couldn’t have done it without the excellent ‘Chairmaker’s Notebook’ by Peter Galbert a great read with excellent instruction and illustrations. You can find it here lostartpress.com/collections/...
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

As an amateur with woodworker, i typically feel overpowered with the entire arrangement ruclips.net/user/postUgkxrYREG3-7f1Aqk9ams3ZESRNzGnfdUtyQ . Be that as it may, this arrangements drove me through with much clarity and effortlessness woodplans. Works i now work like a genius. That is great!
The author does like to from scratch, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
"I have no idea how to make a chair"
Goes on to make one of the finest hand-crafted chairs I've seen. 😂
I mean, it’s still rustic. It’s not Chippendale.
No music. Just the sound of a craftsman at work. Bliss. Thank you.
except the jarring intro ofc
My thought exactly.
And that perfect video editing
Tortinwall the sounds of a craftsman at work in his videos are so soothing. And getting to see the progress Of the wood become a chair.
Yeah, fuck music on youtube vids. Especially the same free youtube tracks over and over and over again ...
Great use of rubber bands. I learned something here today. Thanks
I like everything made of wood because it makes me feel healthy.👍
Thoroughly enjoyable . It can be irritating when people get off the subject , but the kangaroos were a nice touch . I'll be watching this multiple times .
Quick summary of all scrap wood challenges, Pask says he has no idea what he's doing but he'll give it a go anyway, and it turns out great.
Man! I love the contrast of the humility and result in your videos. Inspiring!
I really like that your videos are modern but still have traditional wood skills thanks
Mate, you are one clever bugger. Well done.
First chair you say? Damn sir, very impressive.
Also, loved the use of spanners as diameter gauges on the lathe :D
Spanners as gauges is an old, time proven method of checking when vernier calipers and the like were expensive bits of kit.
and the rubber bands as gauges. Very quick thinking.
Rubber band trick for center was awesome
The rubber band trick was utterly brilliant !
The trick with the two mirrors is very clever and for the first chair, it is a much impressive work.
First time over seen the mirror trick. I really appreciate the simplicity of it.
Very nice! Love the mirror tricks - seems like its really accurate too!
Thanks! It really is very accurate! :)
So much work involved in this build. This is why a set of 4 chairs costs more then the much larger table that goes with it.
Fantastic job on your first chair, scrap wood challange is something every woodworker should do
I love watching you use your hand tools. I don't know if it is because they are inherently slower than power tools or it is just because you are a conscientious craftsman, but I am always surprised by some detail in your work which, when I give it a thought, is generally something that needs to be done but I never thought about it. This time it was how you rounded off the edges of the legs of chair and the back of the seat. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you! Even though I use both power tools and hand tools I do enjoy the hand tools more! :)
Damn nice chair for a first go. I bet your great grandchildren will enjoy it.
I was looking for videos on how to make tapered cuts on. table saw; I then come across this video and was mesmerised for 15 minutes by the amazing skill and technique.
Love the idea of using mirrors! Was great to see so many different techniques being used too!
It's a small thing, but I really appreciate how you made sure to mention the book and the author more than once. There are so many RUclipsrs that make it seem like they either just know everything already or were smart enough to figure it out on their own. Obviously this isn't a project for beginners, but even those more advanced in woodworking will be discouraged if they think they should be able to do something without a guidebook or advice from a professional. Great video, beautiful result! (Not to mention it's all scrapwood!!)
U r my favourite woodworker iv ever seen. Your videos r insping. Thank u so much.
You sir, are truly a wood magician! That chair is beautiful and the fact that it's made out of scrap wood is simply amazing!
The ‘Chairmakers Notebook’ is probably be of the best woodworking books so far this century. It has had a positive effect on every facet of my woodworking; not just chairs.
Thanks for the content, I really like the scrap wood challenges
Best scrapwood challenge yet.
Now that's a fine looking piece of furniture! First chair shows how good your woodworking skills are honed.
For someone who’s never made a chair before, you’ve built a chair even I wood be proud to sit in!! ❤️ your editing great job on the wooden chair!!
This man does in a day with scrap what I couldn't do in months with precut pieces
I am sure making this chair needs some hours of work but decades of experience like yours! Great craftsmanship!
You're brilliant. I look for a Pask video every day.
You are ‘The Man’.
Amazing what you can.
I would be very happy to achieve 10% of your skills.
Willy from Belgium.
Very very nice first chair.
Marvelous work Neil!
I sound like a broken record on your videos. Your talent and patience is off the charts.
Thanks very much! :)
Love the spanner sizing guide 👍
I don't care that it's your first chair, it looks great! Love seeing how you put your thought process into your work.
First encounter with such tools, high precision craftsmanship 👍🏼
Neil Paskin, the perfect Australian carpenter ever!
Looks amazing Neil!!!! 😁🌲
That's awesome for your first time making this chair. I really like watching these types of videos and thank you.👍
Scrapwood chair.
Nice job.
Great craftsmanship. Your explanations of the process are very informative. Thank you.
Lovely chair,I just love your movies. Hope to see many more, thanks.
I wish I lived next door to you! You are truly one of the most creative RUclipsrs out there.
The use of wrenches as diameter gauges was brilliant. I'm going to use that.
Wow! What a great looking chair. Didn't realize the process was so complex. Think I'll stick to making boxes.
Really beautiful work...Awesome result..
Dude i mean you are amazing... God gives you hands of creative powers... Really enjoy watching your video,,, Keep it up Dude,,, Love your projects,
pretty sure he gave himself the experience he needed to create this.
I'm always impressed by your ingenuity Neil. Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to the next project.
a class seat for your first you can be proud of this. So you see that if you make enough things, you will naturally improve step by step in making things ....
That's a nice looking chair from scarp! May God Bess you and your family Greatly
You make it look so easy. Making a stable, comfortable chair is one of the most challenging woodworking projects. Kudos for a beautiful result.
Wanderful...! I am an old lady of 66 and you let me long for my dad as I always help him and sit and look what he was doing... beautiful chair...!!
And now, you are also a master chairmaker ! Congrats for this superb chair.
I've got to say, using a wrench to turn the right diameter is brilliant....and thinking outside the box... or inside the tool box. I'd have never thought to do that.
amazing ideas for Scrapwood. we have very very Scrapwood....
The use of mirrors to get the angles right and the rubber bands to measure the length for the leg supports was simply BRILLIANT. I love your videos, I learn something new every time. Keep it up and cheers from the USA.
I never get enough of these
I appreciate you showing how you leveled the chair (cutting the legs). I've seen several which just skip that step (maybe they're just that good, who knows) but the thought of getting it perfect is rather intimidating! Your projects are great! Keep em coming.
Beautiful result for the man who never made a chair before!! Great job!
Very nice work Neil, I wish I had access to a supply of scrap camphor laurel like you do! For a first chair, bloody good, sure there will be many more-to come!
lostartpress.com you say... well there's my next few Christmas lists sorted
Yes there's plenty there on my list too! :)
I am, once again, very impressed. Congratulations Neil you must be so happy with yourself.
My friend You never cease to impress me!
You’re very humble to say that you’re not one to teach how to make a chair.
My humble opinion is that you, as always did a fenomenal job!
The chair is beautiful you’ve done a great job.
Congratulations. And thanx for sharing.
Wow, I really learned a lot of useful tricks from this! The mirror trick, the self-made tapering jig, the crossed rubber bands, leveling the feet, determining the length of the spokes...
Great stuff!
Yet another great video and a joy to watch.
Skippy Lives! good chair!
thumbs up just for the rubber band trick alone
I made two matching chairs and while it was a ton of work it was very satisfying as well. I wish the design I came up with wasn't so difficult because everyone who saw them wanted them. If I did make more and sell them they wouldn't be cheap!!
Good Job down under Carpenter and just in 16 minutes
Cheers from Luxembourg 🇱🇺
👍😎🇱🇺🍺
That trick with the mirrors and the angle finders was freaking awesome. You truly are a genius!
Terrific build. I can't believe it is only your first chair. But I have come to expect only the best from you. Keep it up
What a beautiful little chair. You did an amazing job. Thanks for sharing
You don't need to make a chair with power tools - you're a true craftsman, Neil. I have buckets and piles of old off cuts that I should probably throw out, but once I watch one of your Scrapwood Challenges I decide to keep it all!
That was a pleasure to watch. Good pace with the speeded up footage too, you can see what's happening but you don't feel like you're waiting! Really nice project. And all from 'scrap'!
Glad you enjoyed it Jason and good to hear your thoughts on the videos pace! :)
Nice! And I loved the stop-motion varnishing!
Gorgeous chair
Love these challenges. I totally need to make a chair someday, thanks for taking this challenge on!
Glad you enjoyed it Phillip! You should definitely make a chair if you have any interest in it at all. It was such an enjoyable project! :)
Incroyablement beau. Une maîtrise technique et une patience que j'admire. Merci
That was an absolute joy to watch. Congratulations on a beautiful chair!
looks awesome ! and light probably

Love all your videos. Keep up the great work and craftsmanship.
Another winner. Love all aspects of your work and videos.
Awesome work Neil! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
congratulations for the work, the chair was beautiful, with techniques and tips like the one you used with the mirror
Beautiful work. Thanks.
Your layout lines look like some kind of medieval magic spell.
Well done, Neil. Great design and execution.
I'll tell ya what Pask. I admire the fact u can build a chair so well this way with mostly hand tools. I woulda used a grinder with one of those funny looking shaper cutter thi9ngs u can get now but u did it completely by hand. Fair play to ya mate. I respect ya big time for doing it this way.. Keep up the great content..
You're a legend mate! Beautiful chair, top notch!
Beautiful chair!
