AMS is really great stuff for a quick green up. 👍🏼
You got it!
Do you sprinkle it on or make it water soluble?
Can you use the granules now at a soil temp of 40 degrees or is it better to apply with pump sprayer and should it be watered in?
Do not apply this without watering it in. If you have 40 degree soil temps around your parts and they aren’t going up anytime soon, as in winter, your lawn is most likely done growing and applying fert isn’t a great idea right now
If you already have low ph, you can run into issues using AMS. It’s great if your ph is high.
Great video. Easy to understand. My lawn has a high PH and is very low on nitrogen, so I was going to use ammonium sulfate. My lawn is also very low on phosphorus. Can I mix the ammonium sulfate with some sort of phosphorus fertilizer?
Yes you can! Thanks for the comment!
Top dress your lawn with 1/2 inch of manure compost or more. Compost adds Phosphorus. Also Fertilize with Ammonium Sulfate. The microorganisms in the compost will eat the Sulfur in the Ammonium Sulfate and excrete acid, lowering your PH. The Nitrogen in AS will raise the N. Do this now or in the fall, then do it again in the Spring. If you want to increase the affect, core aerate before top spreading the compost.
@@dondiegodelevega2092 Awesome! Thanks for the help!

sir
ok
Wow...didn't know how cheap that is. Is there an option if I need to make my soil a lower PH?
This will lower your ph over time. You mean something you push it lower? Usually people go elemental sulfur and citric acid
Man, I'm having a heck of a time finding AMS here in the Mankato area of Minnesota. Farm Coop only have bulk, and none of the big box stores have it (H. Depot, Menards).
How much is bulk?
Not sure, but I think it comes by the truck load for farming. Actually found some 50 lb bags at a farming co-op in a neigboring town, so I'll head over monday and stock up. =-)@@TheLawnMentor
@@Chris-pj1os score!
I'm having trouble as well. My local coop will only sell it by the Ton. 50 pound bags are going anywhere from $50.00- $100.00 and nothing near me.
And how often should this be applied? Is it safe to do through the summer months?
AMS safe to apply all year. Frequency is all up to you
Great Video. I am trying to determine if I need it or not? My PH is 5.9 would AMS help my lawn? I am trying to fully understand if this is something i would need or can use on my lawn.
You can use AMS if you want to. It may lower your pH, but you can apply the appropriate amount and type of lime to raise your pH to your desired range. If you have a sulfur deficiency, AMS would also be helpful for you.
Your not going to want to lower a 5.9 pH so forget the AMS
& you lessen the chance of damage.
You should be around 6.5 to 6.8 but no matter what you do
the pH will probably keep coming back to what it is & the neighbors
are probably the same even if they have a crappy yard & do nothing.
Before you put down lime look at your soil test (Ca) Calcium.
If Calcium is high don't add lime.
If your Sulphur is low also, as was said, keep putting down the Potassium
Sulfate it has Sulphur.
@@pczapp827 thanks man. After my comment I looked into it and figured it wasn’t for me.
You aren’t going to move the needle on pH enough with the amount of AMS you put down in a year. It takes way more sulfur than that to acidify the lawn versus the 1 lbs per 1k you might add a year. Just because your pH is not in line DOESNT mean you can’t use AMS
@@pczapp827using AMS on a 5.9 pH soil would have pretty much zero effect on the pH. This is straight from the MSU turf grass website
"you’d need to spread three 50 lb bags of ammonium sulfate over an 11 yd x 11 yd area to reduce the pH of a loam soil by 2 pH"
That's no where near the amount you'd apply to a lawn.
I just went and picked some up at my local co op but when I got home the bag says 99.5%. Can I still use this or is it to strong and burn everything up?
What’s the other 0.5%? It probably means that there’s other carrier in the bag but the AMS in the bag should still have a 21-0-0 analysis
Do you have to mix it in water or can you spread it as a granular?
The stuff I bought is specifically made for dissolving and spraying
Great video. Can i mix this with Seaweed?
Oh yeah, I mix it with Sea-K all the time
@@TheLawnMentor Thank you!
Whats a good rate for spoon feeding every 2 weeks?
Depends on the time of year but maybe somewhere around 0.25lbs of N
Do you think you’ll get a darker green from using this or would you get a darker green from like a 25-0-6 with 5% iron what do you think and do you think it’s better if you put it in water and spray it or just throw it down with the spreader
I personally got a darker green from AMS than just liquid iron. I was sulfur deficient and that was addressed with this product. I think the king of combos is liquid iron sulfate and AMS together. Called Ferrous Ammonium Sulfate - I’ll be doing a video on that soon
@@TheLawnMentor If you spray ammonium sulfate how many pounds per gallon of water do you add or I should say mix
@@robsolo4024 I weigh out however much AMS for however much nitrogen I want to apply in the yard and then I mix it with the proper amount of water it takes to cover my yard - in my case it’s 3.5 gallons of water
Maybe tell people how to use this and what ratios for spraying?
Most people don’t care about those details but if enough people want to know a How To on applications, I will consider it
I just purchased a 51 lb bag of the same brand you used in this video. I am getting ready to spoon feed the lawn. Unfortunately, I don’t know how much product to put into the water and mix it. I have a 25 gallon sprayer and 80,000 sq ft to spray. I can’t find the breakdown or formula to put the correct amount into the sprayer. Can you assist with this? Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide!
Can the granules be applied directly to the lawn?
Yea I have done that without burning the lawn. Just be sure to water it in ASAP to prevent burn
@@TheLawnMentor I wouldn't want to try AMS without mixing in hot water
& spraying, then water in.
I tried putting down Potassium Sulfate (which is Water Soluble) with a spreader a couple years ago & did lots of damage.
A few weeks ago I weighted it out & mixed in hot water & sprayed it & so
far no issues.
how long does it take for ammonium sulfate to reduce ph level.say from 7 to 6 or 5.5? if i add gypsum would it help to reduce ph level furthr? plz advisd
LONG time. You need full elemental sulfur for that. And even at that, it takes a long time
@@TheLawnMentor heard aluminum sulfate works better..how often do u need to apply and how long are we talkin for seeing any affect..
@@RH-zc5dq never used aluminum sulfate? I use this stuff about biweekly and it keeps everything dark green. First time I used it it made the lawn dark green within a couple days
@@TheLawnMentor aluminum sulfate i heard gives u result in weeks but u need alot more than elemntal to make it work n alot of aluminum is toxic to the plants ..for amending my poor alkaline soil , im thinking of mixing organic compost with cow manure, elemntal sulfur, gypsum, vitamin c, iron, regular applications of compost tea..and when its time to plant a nursry tree, adding yeast, cinamon would help boost n protect root growth..
@@RH-zc5dq that’s a whole lotta stuff.
So I only put ammonium sulfate on my lawn I apply it dry. I can get my pellets and soak it in water? How do I know how much to put? Also I want to know what else I should mix it with? Thanks
If it’s straight up AMS you can dissolve it in water. The amount you use is totally up to how much nitrogen you want to apply
@@TheLawnMentor yea it’s straight ammonium sulfate 21-0-0. I just apply it every six weeks throughout the year and it looks amazing that’s the only thing I put on my lawn(tall fescue)
What else can I add while applying the ams?
That’s awesome!!!
Can I use this on my flowers and vegetable plants?
You can but I’d recommend also amending your garden soil with any other nutrients that are best for your plants like phosphorus or potassium
@@TheLawnMentor Ah!
So this really is just for grass then?
@@twistedara it’s a nitrogen only fertilizer and I would hate to give you a green light on something that doesn’t meet all the needs of your crop
@@TheLawnMentor true that. Thanks for responding. 🤘
@@twistedara my pleasure!!!
What if you're pH is all ready too low, should you use it?
You can, in conjunction with lime
@@TheLawnMentor 👍
If you mix AMS in the backpack sprayer, does it need to be watered in or can it be absorbed by the leaf blades? Wondering if I need to plan it around a rain event or not since I don’t have irrigation.
To make sure you don’t get “tip burn”, I’d water it in or do it the night before it rains.
Where did you get it for that price what I see is about 100 dollars
My local Rural King!
what is the rate for this bag sprayable AS? I have one without the "21-0-0" is a 98% and 05%, how much should I dilute per 1000Sqf?
There is no bag rate. You need to calculate how much nitrogen you want to apply and then measure it out per the size of your yard. As far as dilution, everybody has their own recommendations but I’ve easily put out 7lbs of AMS mixed in 4 gallons of water through a backpack sprayer
@@TheLawnMentor yes I understand, but I don't see the actual amount or % of nitrogen/ammonium sulfate in it. or how to calculate from the 99.5%?
@@jrfun4647 most Ammonium Sulfate is a 21-0-0. The rates you want to use all vary based on how much nitrogen you want to apply. I don’t know a set dilution rate for ensuring you get a homogenous solution
@@TheLawnMentor Got it, thank you for your help!
Anytime
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm in a mood for some cake all of a sudden 🤔
😂😂😂😂
I have a guy come once a month to kill the weeds in my lawn & uses a fertilizer for my lawn! I just planted hybrid Bermuda sod 3 months ago! Lawn was green but I didn’t mow it for 2 weeks & now the lawn has brown spots! Need to mow the lawn once a week! Can I still use ammonium sulfate or would I be using too much fertilizer for the sod?
You can back the rate down so you don’t push growth
How much do I mix per 1 k sq feet?
All depends how much nitrogen you want to put down
What would be a good spoon feeding rate application? Thanks for the quick response!
I forgot to add that a few weeks ago I saw a video of applying and once a month and 20-20-20 once a month, basically every two weeks doing an application, would doing the application form your video and spoon feeding the ams once a month b to much ams?
@@danalmeida5380 I personally, during the spring and fall, like to spoon feed around 0.25lbs of N (EQ. To about 1lbs AMS per 1ksqft.) - during the summer months I back that down to whatever minimum the lawn needs or switch to a urea based liquid fert. It’s fun to play around 😃
I cant find this stuff at a cheap price anywhere.
Check local feed stores, “elevators”, rural king, etc…
@@TheLawnMentor I can't find this bag anywhere.

Lucky you can still buy. It's banned here. No big box stores. And Amazon won't ship it to this area. STUPID GOVERNMENT.

@@TheLawnMentor Yes, I heard that it was banned in the UK. To my surprise I saw ome in a garden centre so I immediately bought some.
