Firewatch not having any jumpscares makes it even more terrifying. Youre kinda expecting the figure to jump out and scare you the entire game, but he doesnt. Ned is just trying to hide, likr henry and Delilah are. In a way, they needed to meet ned so they didnt end up like him
Yeah good point, the whole game is like its building up to a jumpscare that never happens yet you are always expecting it and I think that is an interesting take that if they didn't discover Ned they would end up the way he did, I never though about it that way
What I love so much about Firewatch is the fact that you choose your dialogue while you’re walking. It feels like you’re having a conversation in realtime, feels more realistic. Can you imagine a new Bethesda game where there’s no awkward standing and staring to each other? Whenever there’s a dialogue, you have to respond within 5 seconds, otherwise the other character will remember that and bring that up in the future?
100% agree, Firewatch absolutely perfected the dialogue system and it heavily carries the game, with most games where dialogue is boring and something you skip through, I intentionally try to get as many dialogue interactions as possible because its so well written and really nicely designed and it feels really human unlike other speech systems in games especially Bethesda games which you also mentioned. Any future story driven game should definitely take inspiration from Firewatch
Fun fact: I ended up playing Firewatch because of all the play throughs I watched for Fears To Fathom. It gave me that tiny little itch for playing a game that puts you in the middle of a forest. Firewatch has a sad but sorta bittersweet ending
While watching this i was expecting this to be created by a guy with thousands of subs but found it to be one with only 500. Seriously tho this is a great video that deserves more attention
Both Ironbark look out and Firewatch are amazing games but I’ve always personally found Ironbark to be more realistic when it comes to the actual job of a firewatch
Fair enough, Ironbark is more grounded in reality as its a horror game and has you actually doing the job like filling out the weather reports each day and the log fire, cooking etc while Firewatch is more focused on the story with the actual job taking more of a background role but both are amazing in what they do and take the same concept in 2 totally amazing directions
This is very good video, thanks man! The best thing that Fears to Fathom does is not knowing when or what will happen to you. Because everything we do is daily work. When some games tell you to do this, you know that something will happen to you when you go there. But even while peeing in F2F, something can happen to you. F2F uses human emotions very well.
Yes it really keeps you on your toes and every little interaction in the game is 10x scarier than it actually is because of how much your brain tricks you into being scared, only the last 1/3 of the game contains any of the main jumpscares/horror stuff etc and the other 2/3 is just incredible atmosphere and amazing build up
I want another firewatch game that’s an actual “horror” game. It doesn’t need to follow Henry again I just want a really scary firewatch game. Great video though, I checked out your other content and it convinced me to subscribe.
Yes the developers are very talented at making something scary so even just something like a DLC to Firewatch that played more into the horror elements, maybe from the perspective of people camping out in the nature reserve, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for subscribing! I've got alot more videos just like this coming out soon so I hope you enjoy :D
Firewatch is a lot scarrier but in a special way honestly. Firewatch seems cool at first, but then the pressure comes. I started feeling weird since spotting ned in the forest.
Yeah and I hope that feeling was captured in the video, that's probably the most interesting part of the game is how scary you trick yourself into thinking the game is because of the fear of the unknown and that was one of the most memorable parts of the game (at least for me)
Yeah I knew it existed when making this video but thought it would be too bloated comparing 3 games, however I might look into it and see if I can turn it into a video essay in the future :)
@@RafaelAhlert Well stay tuned, I've put that on my list of stuff to cover for a video essay, it wont be my next but in a month or so time keep a lookout, however the stuff ive got coming out in the meantime is still the same quality of stuff but on different horror games, infact ive got a brand new video essay coming out this friday that is double as long as the firewatch video so I hope you check it out :)
Literally my only problem with Fears To Fathom is, that its full of pointlessly loud sound effects at jumpscares, and when someone is chasing you, its like a cheap way to make something scary, and i don't think the game actually needs it, since the atmosphere is already so scary, you think twice before doing anything. I think hearing footsteps rapidly aproaching you would be actually scarier, than using cheap loud sound effects, just to make you scared.
I think the main reason so a lot of people didn't like how firewatch ended is because they didn't replay it after the first go around. When you're first playing and you have no idea where the story is going, it feels as though the story drops into nothing, but on the second playthrough, you realize just how clever the misdirection is. The game always provides a second explanation for what could be happening whenever henry encounters something. It's henry and delilah who insist and double down on the conspiracy theories. The game does a lot to hint that this is all in their heads. It's such a cool take that looks into how our minds can make stories for themselves when in isolation. But like I said, it's only really obvious on a second playthrough, so a lot of people don't get to see that and feel a bit disappointed with the big twist being "and none of it was real!!!" Which I can understand, seeing as that's a trope that is so rarely executed well.
Yeah a second playthrough is really interesting as it feels like a different game even though the story is the same, and it is interesting how the mind plays tricks and makes stories and it makes you wonder whether real life fire lookouts experience similar things maybe not as extreme as in firewatch though
@@OnePerDay yeah from what I understand being a firewatcher is a very very very boring job, but you're also usually doing other small tasks while there like painting the tower or stuff like that
Yeah I can imagine how boring it is in reality but its really down to the person, if they enjoy nature and want to catch up on some reading and be cutoff from the outside world with no technology I think they would get alot out of it, I'd love to try it at some point, although not long enough to go insane
@@OnePerDay No no please understand that isn't my opinion on the matter, that was a description from an actual firewatcher I read in an article once. So that's like...straight from the horse's mouth
ahhh i have so many thoughts! firstly, very interesting comparison! we need more games about fire watch. secondly, it’s relatable to me about first play through of firewatch. i was scared of everything, although the game showed its comfort with all appearance. it has one important to me thing in common with fears to fathom- fear of being alone. alone on the tower, alone with suspicious things that people don’t believe in. plus fear of the unknown. your own thoughts either scare you more, or don’t know what to assume. sooo, love this atmosphere! also sorry for my english, it’s my second language
Glad you feel the same about Firewatch, it really is a unique experience and yes the loneliness is both Firewatch and Fears to Fathom is extremely scary and a point I probably should've focused more on in the video, glad you enjoyed! :D Also your English was amazing I didn't know it was your second language till the end of the comment so nice job!
I’m just gonna say, I watched the whole thing thinking you were just another analyst who knows what they’re doing, but to end the video and then I see 660 subscribers - wow, bravo caught me off guard that you aren’t already bigger than that. Keep at it and I think you’ll hit 1K in no time
Never really cared for Firewatch, just didn't look like my cup of tea, but i do find the FtF series interesting, since they're presumably based on "real stories", so the title sounded interesting, and it most definitely was. Great video mate, keep it up! 🤙
If you enjoy story games then I strongly recommend Firewatch but if you have watched all of this video then there isn't as much of a point since you know everything that will happen. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video :D
Fears to fathom 4 was my favorite part, but when i played it i havent discovered firewatch yet. So when i was playing firewatch i kept comparing the two during my playthrough lol
I like what you said about the ending. I've been through disasters and wild stuff IRL. However, I'm still here. I, along with others, made it through in the end. Things only stay crazy for so long. Not to ramble too much... I really like how REAL the story is. The characters feel unmistakably human. And the overall "this isn't that important/doesn't change the world much" is VERY true for practically all of us. We all play little parts in this massive play.
Yeah exactly not every moment in life is going to be this big impactful thing that changes the whole course of your life a lot of stuff that happens is just stuff and things stay mostly the same and Firewatch is no different
These two games are absolutely phenomenal. I love the scenery, both stories are absolutely amazing, and even though firewatch gets flack for its ending, it think its the only ending that actually works; can you imagine finding your deary beloved and seeing them, talking to them, leaving both spouses behind in an old life, and turning a new leaf? No, they have lives outside of this job. They have people to get back to, you can not leave them.
NGL I loved to hear Delilah when playing, her voice was so comfy to hear, I'm a lonely person in general but playing firewatch for some reason hearing Delilah made me feel like she was real I had to remember it was just a game lol.
I watched Joe Bartolozzi play Firewatch a couple days ago and it's one of the best story games I personally have ever witnessed. There's something about stories that take place in the wild, particularly the northwest, that fascinate me.
"The fear all disappears on the second playthrough". What I would give for an immersive sim forest ranger game, with procedurally driven animals, people, and cryptids/supernatural effects. You can play out over and over, never knowing if those missing people are just lost, attacked by some crazy person, or take by a cryptid. You won't know if the signs of a creature attack was because people left food out, a rabid animal, or a creature not meant for our world. Would keep you on your toes.
Honestly I think the ending is pretty good and even if Henry did meet Delilah the events would still be the same as in they both have a conversation about the future and then decide to change up their lives but instead of this being over the radio it'd be in person
Oh wow that's crazy it worked out like that, I hope it goes well making your game definitely let me know how it goes and I'm glad this video could help even if it was in a really small way :)

i'm inclined to disagree. the creator said somewhere it says that for the immersion aspect, it's like a reddit nosleep story.
By "real story" they mean something off of reddit or sent in by some random. So I doubt its true

@@OnePerDay cloud climber was a nice once i got for free on steam when i was bored and dear Esther
idk maybe later i can think of more
eventually i wanna make video essays like this myself cuz it seems fun and stuff
edit-1 last day of june i remember was very nice and sad

Yeah… so is Delilah
I would argue Delilah is just as paranoid as Henry and may be responsible for making it look like there is a big conspiracy
@@OnePerDay that’s part of why I like this game, you expect something to happen, and it doesn’t. You can come up with a perfect story but it will never make sense when you ask yourself why. There’s lots of dialogue and things she does that doesn’t make sense and would make sense if she was helping ned. But when I think about it idk why she would
Yeah the game does make you really paranoid
Damn nice essay!
Thank you!
I like fears to fathom, the vibe of the game is memorable in addition to the SICK OST's!
I actually just released a new video essay on Fears to Fathom covering every game and its about an hour long so if you like fears to fathom you might also like that newest video :)
really good video bro
Appreciate it, thank you so much! :D
This video is 1 day ago and this channel's name is 1 day , coincidence? I THINK NOT!
Maybe I have secret time-travel powers, who knows?
FTF if you want aesthetic ambience while FW for artstyle. I only played FTF. I might try FW.
If you like FTF then you will love my newest almost hour long video essay covering every fears to fathom game! :D

Fair enough, everyone has different opinions on Firewatch and I think that's another reason to love it
