Yup! Being raised by a WWII vet, all of us four kids (the three who are still alive, now) have this point of view. My husband's family is the same. We love all of our kids a LOT, but sometimes it's hard, because...well...you know...sigh. David, by the way, was born and raised in Porterville, CA...a very short distance from Bakersfield. ;-) Thanks for sharing one of my very favorite songs ever. Great review!!!
I remember hearing this song on the radio when I was a kid ,it still gets to me... It doesn't take much for southerners to fight for what we believe to be right...
enjoyed hearin that song as it reminds me of my own band days - it was one of the songs we did - I did harmonies and was super for us -you are pickin so great songs pal and I agree with your review and reaction on his classic = cheers x
Please don't be apologetic about this song! It is more important today than ever before! My husband is a Veteran. I am not. However, I can tell you, I will NOT stand for anyone tearing down this country! "If you don't love it, leave it! Let this song that I'm singing be a warning!" Thank you Merle. R.I.P.!
I heard a story appeared on a variety show in the late 60's or early 70's. The host of that show was making fun of Merle while he was introducing him. I think this is the song he sang that night. I remember seeing the clip years ago but I can't find it now.
Scott Finch*: "Reading your comment a year later,..This being 03/ 16/2021 and the song is still 100% right on the mark" ‼️👈😉👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 "It should be the Anthem " ‼️👈🤨👌🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks Southern Gyrl!! That was my thinking when i started the channel--lots of folks reacting to rock and rap, but nobody came close to touching country on a regular basis. So here we are, and I can't wait to see how far it goes. There are so many country fans out there who need representing!
Well I just learned something new and useful. I thought it was a generic line aimed at people who enjoy freedom but won't fight if necessary, but it was at a specific person. Good stuff, Michael.
President Ronald Reagan saw a future in this young man a pardon him from prison a the rest is history. One great singer a song writer. I believe he made it right w Jesus Christ before going home. Just like George Jones a Elvis presley did,,,they all wanted to be reunited w their mom s.
Why don't you tell the way it was? Ronald Regan (yes that Ronald Regan) when He was the Governor of California, pardoned Merle after hearing him singing at San Quinton prison....
My husband was a retired Navy man who had spent several tours overseas, some of them in Vietnam. When he would hear someone running down this country he would say it just showed their ignorance. He said if they would spend a little time living in some other country they would realize how good they have things here in America and MAYBE they would shut their mouths and stop complaining about everything. Merle said it best when he said, "They love our milk and honey (our standard of living as a result of that evil old Capitalism) but they preach about some other way of living." I am thinking of the young people who are pushing for America to be Socialist or Communist. I can only conclude they have no idea what life is really like under these forms of government. I am old enough that I remember when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev came to this country and someone took him to a supermarket. When he saw how well stocked the store was he thought it was a staged venue where all the food from numerous stores were brought together under one roof just to trick him and make him think Capitalism was superior to Communism. They had to take him from store to store (allowing HIM to pick the stops) before he would believe that ALL the stores in America were well stocked. It was way back in the late 50's or early 60's when Khrushchev made that trip to America. More recently, like NOW there is a Cuban lady named Mari and she has a YT channel called Yoel and Mari and apparently Yoel is somehow related to her (I'm not sure what the connection is) and he has come to America for the first time and she is showing him around this country. She has videos named "Cuban sees I Love Lucy for the first time", and "Cuban goes to Costco for the first time" and "Cuban goes to new car dealership for the first time" and "Cuban goes to Home Depot for the first time" and "Cuban goes to Foodtown for the first time." Yoel is amazed at what he sees in this country and he is also saddened when he sees the vast disparity between the way of life here in America and what he is accustomed to in Cuba. In fact, he can hardly take it in when he sees Home Depot and Costco and Walmart and Foodtown, etc. When Mari takes him to Home Depot he is astonished that anything that is necessary to repair or remodel a home is available and all you have to do is walk in and purchase it. He said that in Cuba I believe it was his mother's house had a leaky roof and it could not be repaired because he couldn't find any materials with which to repair it. When Mari takes him to a grocery store he is in awe of the well stocked shelves and when he sees numerous cartons of eggs he nearly cries because he has just talked to his family back in Cuba and his little daughter is not going to have a birthday cake because no eggs are available to make her a cake. If it were in my power I would compel every little pipsqueak who is running around spouting the evils of Capitalism and saying they want this country to be Socialist/Communist to watch the videos of Yoel discovering life in America and hear him compare it to his life in Cuba and see if that would help them understand that they truly are living in the land of "milk and honey" as Merle said. I would bet my bottom dollar that those who gripe the loudest and the longest about life here under Capitalism have at least one computer and a smart phone and a car and a nice apartment or house and a good job (if they want one) and all the food they need to eat. So if they think Capitalism is such an evil why don't they get rid of all those trappings of Capitalism and do without eggs and milk and bread and live like the people in the great Socialist/Communist country of Cuba are currently living. Yeah, when I hear them running down my country they're walking on the fightin' side of ME too!
Today our military is down, the Army, Navy, and Air Force are only getting 60% of the recruits we need. The Marine Corps is getting 121% of what they need and that’s without bonuses.
'...our way of life our fighting men have fought and died to keep..." You mean the right to express views about what you think is wrong with the country? Obviously not. Great tune. Head-up-ass lyrics.
Would love it if you did Merle Haggard's impressions of our Canadian singer Hank Snow ruclips.net/video/u6JSfp6Az3k/видео.html , Marty Robbins ruclips.net/video/3qJRxrmH-po/видео.html , Johnny Cash and Buck Owens, ruclips.net/video/t4V3S7kGNjY/видео.html He's amazing. I think it was President Reagan who gave Merle his pardon.
@James May Good timing for the request, as I've got a different song of his coming up in two days--"It Damn Sure Ain't Merle." I recorded the reaction three weeks ago and it goes up this Friday.
@Dr. Doors I was a rock fan and country moved too slowly for me as a kid. I regarded country in the same way I regarded jazz or hip hop-it didn’t resonate with me. When I hit my thirties I was more open to other music, but in my forties it was country that grabbed me.
This Songs still relevant today
Right? Every time I listen to it I get the same vibe.
Yes sir
Good music is always relevant.
I always loved this song. Merle tells it like it is. this was one of Elvis Presley favorite songs by Merle Haggard.
Sandra Miller I didn’t know Elvis liked this song. Makes sense. Elvis was a patriot.
Merle is my mom's favorite. She has seen him in concert many times, and I was once lucky enough to be her guest. Great memory we have!
I was blessed to see Merle live in 2013, he got standing ovation for this one, and many others.
Another one of the greats that I grew up listening too...Merle is always on my playlist
What an appropriate song for today!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
It has been said many times that Merle is the poet of the working man. Of this I have no doubt.
Legend. Icon. THE great Merle
This song has just as much meaning today with the way things are going as it did back then

Thanks for sharing one of my very favorite songs ever. Great review!!!
Glad you liked it, G3! Merle is an American treasure.
If you apply this song to the current social climate... it's eerily relevant
Probably always will be.
Merle and Willie are great. Listen to their latest posts. The best of the best
I remember hearing this song on the radio when I was a kid ,it still gets to me... It doesn't take much for southerners to fight for what we believe to be right...
The year I was born. Grew up to him and love him and so many others
Old Hag is a legend, as is this song
enjoyed hearin that song as it reminds me of my own band days - it was one of the songs we did - I did harmonies and was super for us -you are pickin so great songs pal and I agree with your review and reaction on his classic = cheers x

@Frank Scarborough Welcome back. Things going alright?
My ALL TIME favorite singer/songwriter!!!!
Watching again. I love Merle Haggard
One of my favorite Haggard songs - brought back memories of when I was a young man, Thanks!!
And some things never change, we’re under attack again. Tell em Merle!
He started off with Okie From Muskogee. Same thought process.
thanks to your husband had an older brother who was a Nam vet
Love ❤this song of Merle's!!
Good choice to review. Haven't heard in a long time.
His sons are great musicians as well. I can sing that one word for word. Lol 💖💖💖
Mel Tillis , Marty Robbins, and Merle Haggard, are all great singers of that time period.
My brother was in Vietnam War and had many flashbacks! It was a hard war for young boys drafted and then treated badly when they returned home! 😢
Love this song.
I wish everyone could hear is son Marty talk about his daddy and how he came about writing his song Sing Me Back Home.
The G.O.A.T.

This song should be our national anthem.
An Anthem for today! Love it or leave it!

I love the live version from the 60s, all America song. Should be one of our national anthems.
You'd get a lot of support for that if it came to a vote.
I loved this song the first time I heard it yrs ago theres not a song he sings I dont like. Love you Merle. Rip
A greater American and greater patriot never lived
It can.go for today too!
Merle and Willie forever. They know knew whats up. Keep track 👣
I don't know where I heard it, or who said it, but they equated this song to the "silent majority" of the 60's. Called it the "anti-anti-war song"
FINALLY ... I can actually say thank you RUclips recommendations! New sub. Rock/Metal to Country. My kinda channel. #LaFamilia
@Big Tim I'm glad RUclips set you up, and welcome aboard the channel!
The “squirrelly guy” line is a shot at Muhammad Ali. This was around the time Ali protested the Vietnam War.
Well I just learned something new and useful. I thought it was a generic line aimed at people who enjoy freedom but won't fight if necessary, but it was at a specific person. Good stuff, Michael.
Once again on to Facebook
My Dad was born the same year old Merle was.
This could’ve been written last week

I caught a public intoxication charge at the Walmart in Pasadena Texas the day Merle Haggard died. HashtagBoxwineandyoutube
@sixteen numbeRthree LOL!! I'm sure most folks would forgive you for that, and even offer to drive you home. :-)
Today our military is down, the Army, Navy, and Air Force are only getting 60% of the recruits we need. The Marine Corps is getting 121% of what they need and that’s without bonuses.
*IF YOU DON'T LOVE IT, LEAVE IT!!!*
I'm pretty sure that Merles momma tried to make him better 🤔 🤷 however her pleading 🥺 he denied. He turned out OK 👍 in the end.
Beer drinking music
The best that ever was.
'...our way of life our fighting men have fought and died to keep..." You mean the right to express views about what you think is wrong with the country? Obviously not. Great tune. Head-up-ass lyrics.

Check out Scott H Biram he opened for hank 3 back in the early 2000s.
The song was on CAPITOL records DUH
I think you misspoke in your review. I'm pretty sure you wanted to say 8.5 + 10 😁
@James DeMarco I have no defense, my friend!! This is an American classic, just as Merle is/was.
@@RockN2Country You had it right the first time. Merle and this song definitely are American classics. ☺
If you don’t like it you must be of one of those squirrely guys who don’t believe in fighting.
8.5
joe biden should use this song in his campaign
Why Did you not like it at first
@Dr. Doors I was a rock fan and country moved too slowly for me as a kid. I regarded country in the same way I regarded jazz or hip hop-it didn’t resonate with me. When I hit my thirties I was more open to other music, but in my forties it was country that grabbed me.
