Seeing old footage of the early days of Bjj fills me with nostalgia. There’s something about those days that stands in stark contrast to todays Bjj, but I don’t know what it is.
I had the pleasure of being introduced to BJJ and train for a few years in Marcelo's academy in NYC. At the time I did not realize how different this place was from anything that I will experience elsewhere later on in life. What Marcelo has achieved with his academy is nothing short of exemplary for the bjj community. Everyone there is so welcoming, so humble so crazy good at this craft! The energy is unlike anything I have seen in other places I have trained since then. Credit to him for being so influential and having thousands of people fall in love with the sports thanks to him.
What a phenomenal guy. He's definitely my favorite grappler of all time. I would love to spend some time with him on the mats and learn how to defeat larger stronger opponents

You gotta have the desire to be on the mat every day. You gotta keep the evolution of your game, and improve every day. But don't look for a recipe, I think people should really enjoy to be on the mat because I think that's the main thing you're going to need to win a world title one day. I received my black belt from Marcelo Garcia in 2018 and I can tell you first hand that nobody loves Brazilian Jiu Jitsu more than that man.
